Sofia Coppola's directorial debut has no shortage of music. She commissioned the French band Air to record an entire album's worth of material (sold separately) and enlisted the help of former Redd Kross drummer Brian Reitzell to pick other music to support the film. Aside from "Playground Love" and "Ce Matin La" by Air and "Everything You've Done Wrong" by Nova Scotia's fine Sloan (who add horns and backdate by three decades to the 1970s), the soundtrack resembles an anonymous day of 1970s AM radio. Al Green delivers a little bit o' soul with "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?", Todd Rundgren balances progressive rock with a strong power-pop backing ("Hello, It's Me" and "A Dream Goes On Forever") as do 10cc with "I'm Not in Love." Heart nail down the hard-rock end with two of their trademarks from the Dreamboat Annie album. Thankfully, Styx is programmed last, so you can skip the overwrought strains of "Come Sail Away" without difficulty. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars As Much A 70's Soundtrack As A Film Soundtrack.......2006-03-07

The use of the phrase "Music from the Motion Picture" gives this the feel of a soundtrack, but what it really amounts to is a 70's mix CD, and a darn good one. In addition to "Hello It's Me," one of Todd Rundgren's biggest hits, the CD also includes the rarely-collected ballad "Alone Again (Naturally)" by Gilbert O'Sullivan, the full-length version of "I'm Not In Love" by 10cc (not the edited mix that seems to be on every other 70's collection), and also the version of "Crazy On You" by Heart WITH the acoustic guitar intro. This CD also introduced me to Sloan ("Everything You've Done Wrong"), who sound right at home with a bunch of 70's hits but are actually a modern group. Also included are the two best 'soundtrack' pieces that Air recorded for the movie; "Ce Matin La" (which will sound familiar from the scene where Cecilia ghost-reads her diary) and "Playground Love," the recurring musical motif of the film. Great stuff to pop into the CD player while driving or working on the computer.

Air's debut, Moon Safari, solidified the French duo's position among fickle electronica music fans and earned them critical accolades throughout the press. Yet one of their most important fans turned out to be Sofia Coppola (daughter of Francis Ford), who, inspired by their moody ambiance, asked them to write the soundtrack for her directorial debut. The Virgin Suicides--adapted from the novel by Jeffrey Eugenides about the Lisbon sisters and their quest for answers in a turbulent American adolescence--includes stars such as Kirsten Dunst and Kathleen Turner, and Air make a deeply impressionistic subliminal appearance as well. Gordon Tracks sings the lush and romantic "Playground Love"; the rest is a throbbing score of somber synths and thick washes of modest psychedelic touches that recall the tranquil buzz that comes from too much staring at the lava lamp. The only complaint is that this 13-track album is only 40 minutes long; some of the cuts should have been longer. The meditative quality practically demands it. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack album, nice and pleasant.......2007-02-10

Air is generally thought of as an electronic pop group, but on this 2000 release, The Virgin Suicides, which is a soundtrack to a Sofia Coppola film (yes, the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola), it sounds much closer to progressive rock than you usually expect this group to do. Many fans of Moon Safari were obviously put off by the dark nature of The Virgin Suicides, but it makes sense, given the context of the film. The album does tend to have more in common with prog rock than you usually expect from Air, as a prog rock fan myself, there are a lot of elements here that are at home with me. For one thing, the heavy use of Mellotron throughout most of these cuts (something way too many people overlook). Many themes are something that wouldn't be out of place on many of my prog rock albums I own, like "Bathroom Girl". And then their use of other analog keyboards, aside from the Mellotron, such as Moogs, Solina string synth and so on. "Playground Love" is the only cut with singing, courtesy of Gordon Tracks. This has a strong Pink Floyd feel, with Gordon's voice sounding a lot like Roger Waters. Many themes recur throughout this album, which only makes sense, given its a soundtrack album. "The Word 'Hurricane'" features some nice ethereal voices complete with such a great theme that I wished it was much longer, but then it quickly ends and then a narrator describing how a hurricane happens, which is pretty educational and factual too. "Highschool Lover" is basically an instrumental version of "Playground Love". That last cut, "Suicide Underground" features some really sinister narration about how all five of the Lisbon girls took their lives. Drums aren't used all that much, but when they do, I found them rather creative, especially on "Dead Bodies". Most of these cuts don't go above the 3 minute mark, which also makes sense given its a soundtrack. The whole CD is just 40 minutes long, which many feel is too short, but back in the 1970s, your typical LP was just 40 minutes long, so it really isn't any shorter than your typical 1970s LP, but quite short by year 2000 standard.

Maybe not to everyone's taste, but I think this is a great collection of music.

2 out of 5 stars Not a good listening CD.......2007-01-28

I bought this CD after thoroughly liking Moon Safari and Talkie Walkie. This CD would probably make a really good soundtrack as background music for the movie, but it wasn't a good CD. Most of the songs are boring and repetitive, with just different variations on the same theme.

4 out of 5 stars Playground Love.......2007-01-04

I was in my local record store when I heard the track "Highschool Lover" playing. I stopped and listened to the whole thing. I then immediately proceeded to the counter to ask what was playing. After they told me what it was, I felt like an idiot since I had just seen the movie a few weeks previous to this. But I wasn't familiar with the band Air. So a while later I finally bought it.

The first track really hooks you in and manages to effortlessly carry you through the rest of the album. There's a very mellow mood present. In fact, be careful when listening to this CD. I had it on in my car and it was beginning to lull me to sleep.

My only complaint is, as mentioned, it runs short. Certain tracks should definitely be longer. But besides that, it was a great introduction to Air.

5 out of 5 stars mandy.......2006-08-17

It was in excellent condition no scratches, and the plastic wasn't torn. It was just like brand new.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Imagery.......2005-12-01

This album beautifully weaves the Virgin Suicides tale without even watching the movie. The music is dark, melodic, harmonic, trippy, chill, 70's-esque and all around wonderful. It is really too bad that Air no longer makes music, they are extremely talented.

If you like GOOD music then you will love this album, if you like Air, you will love this album, if you like a 70's twang added to your electronica, you will love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD........2007-04-12

I purchased this music CD after watching the movie and falling in love with all of the great classic 70's music that was included in the movie. I was truly hoping that they had put out a soundtrack of some sort and was thrilled at finding this CD. Gilbert O'Sullivan, 10cc, Todd Rundgren, it doesn't get any better than that. It was a great era for music, as the movie showcased. Thank you, Amazon!

4 out of 5 stars Good 70's Soundtrack.......2004-04-18

This is a very solid Soundtrack. I was looking for I'm not in love by 10CC. I'm not a huge 10CC fan, infact, that is the only song I like by them, so I wanted to find a Disc that had that track. I did a search for it and found this remarkable disc. As I read through the track listing, I got more pumped as I read on, great Disc. CD Quality is great, I have never heard these songs sound as great as they appear on here. If you want to own a great mixture of music, this soundtrack will not let you down.

My Top 5 tracks:
Hello it's me - Tood Rundgren
Come Sail away - Styx
I'm not in Love - 10cc
Magic Man - Heart
Alone again - Gilbert O'Sullivan

5 out of 5 stars Retro-Magical.......2003-05-09

A beautiful soundtrack of a beautiful pazzling film.
The Retro sounds by Heart, Todd Rundgren, Sloan and more get you back to the magical 70's,
and project the music onto thoughts of the five mysterious sisters in Virgin Suicides.
Air, which made the score also, makes retro-french sounds which gets you even more into a nostalgic mood.
Just sit back and dream of the times you once had, or wish u had.
For me it is a shaft of light in a stormy day.

5 out of 5 stars Best Soundtrack ever.......2003-02-23

People think that the youth of America doesn't appreciate old classic rock songs...but they are wrong. I am proud to say I am 14 years old and love this soundtrack filled with music from the 70's. I love every song on here...and it even got me interested further in these artists. This is the best soundtrack i have ever listened to and it is also a great movie..you should pick them both up..along with the book to!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2002-06-14

First to whoever said you had to live in the 70s and love 70s music to like this CD- you're wrong! I'm 14 and I've never really liked "oldies" music but after watching this movie I've fallen in love with all the songs on the soundtrack.

I have to say my top 3 songs on here are" Magic Man by Heart, Crazy on You by Heart, and Playground Love by Air.

This is truly a wonderful CD and if you liked the movie, you will NOT be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Air-y and pretty.......2005-02-23

Air is one of those downtempo electronica bands who specialize in exquisitely pretty music. And two of their most beloved albums are their debut "Moon Safari," and the musical score for Sofia Coppola's debut "The Virgin Suicides," compiled together in a boxed set.

Their debut "Moon Safari" is the stuff of electronic legend -- pretty, fragile and airy, but with pop sensibilities and jazzy rhythms woven in. Listening to it is a bit like floating on a cloud. They include a few dancey fun numbers like "Sexy Boy," but Air seems to be solidly sitting in the clouds with their soothing, soft music.

"Virgin Suicides" was apparently crafted specifically for the movie, at the director's request. Like the film, it's incredibly pretty and haunting, yet has dark undertones that give the whole thing a brooding sound. A couple songs like "Clouds Up" sound trippy, but the rest of it sounds tragic and ethereal. In other words, perfect for the movie.

If you had to put together two albums from Air's discography, then probably these two are the best choices -- "Moon Safari" is what people think of when they think of Air, and "Virgin Suicides" is similar, but just different enough to be intriguing and engaging.

Their styles are actually quite different -- what the two albums have in common is ethereality, and the space-pop edges and ambient prettiness. "Moon Safari" is sexier and spacier, with a jazzy twist in some of its songs. It's not exactly spacey, but it feels like an extended trip up into the clouds.

On the other hand, "Suicides" veers closer to the ambient pop edge, with the occasional slow edge of dark keyboard. Adding to the otherworldly sound is soft female harmonies rising over it all, as if the girls of the title are singing on their way to the hereafter. Not a single song could be called dancey or even midtempo.

The two-pack of "Moon Safari" and "The Virgin Suicides" is a great place to start with this band, and two of their best full-length albums. Airy, trippy and ethereal.

4 out of 5 stars "Talkie" about "Suicides".......2005-02-24

Air is one of those downtempo electronica bands who specialize in exquisitely pretty music, whether it's trippy and jazzy, or eerie ambient pop. Compiled here is their latest album "Talkie Walkie," and the beloved soundtrack to Sofi Coppola's "Virgin Suicides" movie.

"Talkie Walkie" takes many of its cues from the French duo's debut album, "Moon Safari," meaning that it's made of mellow, dreamy, smooth trip-hop. It dips into darker places in songs with haunted synths and sexy vocals, but most of it is catchy, dreamy, and often entrancingly pretty.

"Talkie Walkie" and "The Virgin Suicides" are the most rewarding pieces of Air's recent work. In fact, it's easy to forget the less engaging "10,000 Hertz Legend" and think that Air went straight from "Suicides" to "Walkie"; these albums have them playing on their strengths alone, whether it's synth-heavy trip-hop or powerful, anguished pop.

Their styles are actually quite different -- what the two albums have in common is ethereality, and the space-pop edges and ambient prettiness. "Moon Safari" is dreamier and spacier, with poppy hooks woven into the glimmery melodies. It's not exactly ambient music per se, but it feels like an extended trip up into the clouds.

"Talkie Walkie" and "Virgin Suicides" offer a look at some of Air's greatest strengths, whether it's angsty, airy pop or dreamy trip-hop.
