With a film as wildly, intelligently entertaining as Chicken Run, the score needs to be something special just to keep pace. Not a problem, then, for John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams, a pair who have worked (together and separately) on other animated films (The Tigger Movie, Antz) and action films (Enemy of the State, Face/Off)--which has prepared them well for a film in which a gaggle of chickens re-enact The Great Escape. Powell and Gregson-Williams's score is perfectly suited to the action on screen: classic instrumentation and serious themes, but with the occasional nod and wink. This is a score that, like the film itself, takes itself just seriously enough. Never bombastic, the cues pay tribute to the music of classic war and action movies--there's a hint of The Dirty Dozen, a nod to Indiana Jones, even a Star Wars-esque bit toward the end. --Randy Silver

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Awesome Soundtrack from Powell and Gregson-Williams.......2004-02-19

I do not ususally write reviews on Amazon, but anyone who likes soundtrack scores should know about this CD. I recently started collecting soundtrack scores and I came across this one just recently. I was a little skeptical at first because I thought there was no way a CD from a movie that was basically a cartoon could be any good. I was WRONG!

I have learned that some of the best soundtrack scores come from cartoons. I also discovered this IS THE BEST OF THEM ALL! I am proud to recommend this CD to anyone who likes upbeat, fun and exciting music. John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams have done an excellent job with this CD and I highly recommend it. I look forward to future collaborations between these two very talented composers. As a side note, I also recommend their other collaborative work, ANTZ.

5 out of 5 stars "The music is as good as the movie!".......2004-01-17

I am a big fan of the "Chicken Run" movie, and now of the soundtrack as well! John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams have a talent for fitting the music to the story and characters of Nick Park and Peter Lord's animated feature film. The most interesting thing about the soundtrack is that John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams use kazoos in a lot of their tracks, but it's actually pretty good and fit's well with the movie. Though I like almost every single track on the album, my favorites are: "Opening Escape", "Main Titles", "Flight Training", "Up on the Roof", "Into the Pie Machine", "Rocky, a Fake All Along", "Building the Crate", "The Chickens Are Revolting" and "Escape to Paradise".

If you do not have the Cd, then my professional opinion is...BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Score.......2003-05-10

This is a near masterpiece. I only have about 300 film scores in my collection, but this is definately one of the very best.

5 out of 5 stars Run to get this one - don't be a chicken.......2002-12-31

Chicken Run is the best score to come from Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell teaming up. This is also one of the best scores for an animated film as well. There is lots of different kinds of music found in this soundtrack such as jazz, comedy, knockout action, and even country western. The main theme is a knockout heroic full orchestra delight, with plenty of brass and drum machines overpowering. This theme is also played wonderfully with a lighter, more romantic touch in some of the tracks on strings and woodwinds. Many unusual instruments are used throughout, such as the kazoo, which has a unique effect to the music, harmonicas, a bagpipe, and several drum machines. A powerful male choir that Hans Zimmer used to a great effect in Crimson Tide is featured in some of the tracks also, which adds a big testosterone sound to the music. The first 2 tracks simply blow you away with the main theme exploding in your face. "Flight Training" is another good cue with plenty of kazoos and choir with a jazz related combo (how often do you get that combination). "Building the Crate" is another knockout cue with a full blown orchestral performance to close it off. "Chickens Are Not Organized" contains a harmonica played over snare drums which actually sounds cool. "A Really Big Truck Arrives" utilizes the male choir along with big orchestral sounds. I could go on all day on how good this score is. Every score track is phenomenal and always leaves you wanting plenty more. 2 songs are on this album as well. "Flip Flop and Fly" by Ellis Hall sounds almost identical to "Jump Jive an' Wail", which I think was the idea there. "The Wanderer" by Dion is an oldie that along with the other song, should have been left off even though both songs are not bad. This is one of the best scores out there and you would be a fool to pass this one up. Run to get it!!

5 out of 5 stars good value for your money.......2002-12-21

I've started collecting soundtracks about two years ago, so I cannot say I'm a real expert on this topic, but from the 35 soundtracks I own right now, this one is my favourite. I have all three soundtracks of this composer duo (I found Shrek somewhat dissappointing, but Antz is another soundtrack I can recommend) and this one is their best in my eyes. They use different kinds of styles throughout the album whith three or so main themes. I like full orchestrations best, and fortunately, this album contains a lot of that alternated with some light music with solos in the clarinet. Powell and Williams are good in using different kinds of instruments and on this particular album they use one I don't know the name of, but it sounds like a lot of buzzing bees, and surprisingly it sounds very well. My favourite track of the album would be "building the crate" to which I can listen over and over. I also suggest that, after buying this record, you take a look at "The Rock", another soundtrack partly composed by Harry Gregson Williams, with gorgeous percussion and drums in it.
