Dances With Wolves: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews

John Barry's Academy Award-winning score for actor/director Kevin Costner's nouveau western, Dances with Wolves, is nothing short of a modern classic by a film scoring master. Utilizing Wagnerian structure, Barry's three main themes recur in magisterial symphonic form. The memorable "John Dunbar" theme alone has become an almost subconscious part of modern life, utilized as Muzak and underscore for public events great and small. Barry's skills as an arranger color his themes in subtly shifting orchestral hues, giving even the most repeated melodic passages new emotional weight. Barry's rich music is living proof that the art of orchestral film scoring is still alive and surprisingly vital in the '90s. --Jerry McCulley

An everyday affair..........2007-05-15
Many years ago, while I was going through some very difficult times, I listened to this CD EVERY NIGHT for a solid year. I never tired of it; quite the contrary, the more that I listened, the more I heard and felt. It became a meditative and steadfast element in my daily diet of recovery. My point is that the collective composition, arrangement and performance of each piece is without peer, in my estimation; and that covers all genres. I listen to everything that my two older brothers - both professional musicians - throw at me, and I consider this to be the "Sergeant Peppers" of contemporary orchestral music. Truly one for the ages. Buy it, and enjoy it for a lifetime.
Good, but not what I expected........2005-10-08
I bought this thinking it would be the John Williams stuff... but it's some other guy, John Barry. :( This soundtrack is really good, but not quite as good as WIlliams's stuff. I am mildly disappointed to see that there isn't another version of this with the ORIGINAL film score.
One hell of a score.......2005-09-16
I am a John Williams fan. Nothing, in my opinion, beats John Williams. That is, until I heard the soundtrack from this movie. For the first time, my complete faith in John Williams was shaken. There WERE other people out there that could outdo him!
John Barry's haunting "John Dunbar's Theme" and majestic "Buffalo Hunt" are the main reasons for purchasing this soundtrack alone. The spirit of the frontier comes magically to life in this wonderful, wonderful piece of work.
When this was nominated for an Academy Award, I reluctantly turned away from John Williams' "Home Alone" and rooted for John Barry...and came away a wiser person. Though Williams is still at the top of my list, I'll always remember the day that "John Dunbar" made me think twice.
Great Score And Sound!.......2005-09-14
This is one of the best movie scores (as opposed to "soundtracks") ever done, and the Gold CD version has great sound. As with many other great movie scores (and soundtracks), it raises the movie from "very good" to "great" status. The Gold CD has 3 extra tracks not found on the regular release. If you're an audiophile, John Barry fan, or just a fan of great movies (and music) this is a must-have.
My favorite CD.......2004-09-29
I have quite a few soundtracks in my collection, but this one is my absolute favorite. I suffer with bipolar and in order to relax, I like to listen to something soothing and uplifting. When I have this CD playing, I no longer feel depressed or anxious...I just feel good. This is a great score to escape from the world. Some other soundtracks I recommend, AFTER you purchase this one, are: Superman(John Williams), Stealing Home, Willow, The Blue Lagoon, Gladiator, Titanic, and Field of Dreams, and The Natural, just to name a few. If you go through your whole life without listening to this CD atleast once, than you'll have really missed out.

The movie it ain't!.......2007-06-21
I purchased this SACD after reading the glowing reviews and was disappointed when I listened to the recording. Despite being the soundtrack to a VERY LONG film, there was very little contrast in the 18 offerings on the disc. Unlike numerous classical SACDs that have greatly moved me, "Dances With Wolves" merely lulled me to sleep.
Dances With Wolves.......2006-03-03
this wonderfull score is the bast score of all time. You must have this score in your movie music collection.
Dances With Wolves Soundtrack.......2005-09-23
This is beautiful haunting music. One of the best all-time movie scores.
not all SACD are surround.......2005-05-05
I just wanted to let everyone know who read that review that he doesnt know what he is talking about. Yes this is a STEREO only SACD. SACD was first made only in stereo. There was no surround or hybrid SACD. And if you listen to SACD dont buy the regular CD this will blow it away.Im not trying to be mean just stating the facts. Ive been listining to SACD since 1999 when sony released this format and when I heard Billy Joel I was hooked. Have fun and buy them all because Sony is thinking of not doing SACD anymore and that would be awful.
SACD, but NO surround sound.......2005-02-13
Very nice music - nothing wrong with that.
But.... this is a stereo CD. It has SACD written all over it and my new Denon DVD-3910 DVD player does recognise this as an SACD, but it only has 2 channels, instead of 5.1. I do own several other SACD's and these DO play 5.1 channel. Very strange....
So perhaps it's smarter to order the Stereo CD, the one with the special bonus tracks (Dances with Wolves (Special Extended Edition).
