Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The divergent marketing concerns of many a modern Hollywood film have increasingly led to the issuing of individual song-scores and traditional orchestral soundtracks for the same film, releases that sometimes seem completely at artistic cross-purposes. John Debney's effervescent score for Jon Favreau's loopy Christmas fantasy is a happy exception. Perfectly complementing a song-score that leans on Favreau's decidedly hipster retro-lounge affections, Debney has concocted playful orchestral cues that careen with the same buoyant sense of innocent abandon as Will Ferrell's star-crossed title character. The composer's swinging "Christmas Medley" here wouldn't seem at all out of place on its song-score companion piece, while his musical portrayal of the Elves and their magic holiday world is dominated by a whistling chorus that's just ever so-slightly off. It's instrumental holiday music fueled by a refreshing sense of fun - and a little contemporary, ironic sass. --Jerry McCulley

It takes a pretty deft touch to make us believe towering Will Ferrell as a displaced human cum Santa's elf, Ed Asner as St. Nick and make a Christmas movie that's as loopy/sassy as it is seasonally sentimental. Yet that's what director Jon Favreau has done with this unlikely little holiday gem, and his hand-picked song score underscores its warm heart and comedic smarts with charm to burn. Suffused with a New York sense of traditional cool, Favreau turns his soundtrack into an upbeat secular Christmas classic, a sort of Swingers-Meet-Santa collection that convinces us that performances as diverse as Louis Prima's rousing take on "Pennies From Heaven" and the pumping soul of Billy Preston's "Nothing From Nothing" are as season-friendly as the performances of more traditional Christmas pop fare by Ella Fitzgerald, Jim Reeves, Eartha Kitt and Eddy Arnold they bookend. The edited Ferrante & Teicher/Les Baxter medley is a lounge-y inspiration, while a trio of laconic Leon Redbone crooners anchor the film's dizzy, if often bittersweet emotional foundations. Co-star Zooey Deschanel duets with Redbone on "Baby It's Cold Outside," her bluesy performance a welcome surprise that recalls nothing less than a young Peggy Lee. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Best soundtrack ever!.......2007-01-18

I loved this album! All the songs are great and take you back to scenes from the movie. It was certainly a change from the normal Christmas Carols in our house over the holiday season.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants something a bit different for Christmas.

1 out of 5 stars very disappointing.......2005-08-02

Promo says recorded by "Big Movie Orchestra" but it sounds more like a couple of synthesizers. The "strings" are OK but anything on brass or wind sounds AWFUL. Some tracks are not even on pitch. Seller would not refund, either - adding insult to injury! Now it's a handsome coaster for my desk!

Don't buy this one by mistake, why they even released this one...i don't know. It is a bilious condition that causes all hollywood movie scores to sound so blandly offensive, some more watered down classical tripe, from the john williams school of psuedo classical music, oh well, you still have Zooey to help keep you warm, buy the other one.

          5 out of 5 stars Absolutely enchanting!.......2003-12-09

The moment I heard this during the movie's opening credits I knew I had to have the soundtrack's score. The composition for the opening credits instantly brought tears to my eyes.

ELF is a must-own for anyone with a heart and an ear for lovely music. It's a wonderfully sweet score that's light as a feather, cheering and never cloying. And while it's guaranteed to move you in the Christmas spirit, it's also a CD guaranteed to bring tears of joy all year round. Highly recommended for anyone who loves the lighthearted style of a musical fairy tale!

2 out of 5 stars Boring score - Buy the soundtrack record instead!.......2003-11-18

There's nothing original whatsoever about this score. Buy the soundtrack and feast your ears on zooey deschanel's "Baby, its cold outside". Its the best holiday music compilation in years.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie - great soundtrack!.......2003-11-12

The highlight of this album is the Leon Redbone & Zooey Deschanel duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside"... heck, I'd buy a whole album of Christmas tunes if Zooey would do one. Gorgeous girl, sexy voice reminiscent of crooners of the 40s and 50s.
A few of the other Christmas tunes can be easily found elsewhere, so if you're a Holiday music afficionado like me you're only getting this for a handful of songs, but for everyone out there this is a fantastic mix.
Also has two non-Christmas tunes - Louis Prima's "Pennies from Heaven" and Louis Prima's "Nothing From Nothing". While I could do without the latter, after seeing "Elf" I think "Pennies from Heaven" will remind me of the Holiday as well.
