5 out of 5 stars Legendary Film Score.......2007-07-03

This is must have film music for any serious collector of scores. What Goldsmith did with this score is amazing. Capturing the essence of John Rambo's lonely walk in "Home Coming" immediately let's the audience know that this is no fairytale happy-ending story. There are a number of great themes throughout the album including "Escape Route" and "Over The Cliff". Rounding things out is "It's A Long Road" sung by Dan Hill in what has to be one of the finest "end credit" songs that I've ever heard. The lyrics fit the film perfectly and Dan Hill does a great job with the vocals.

In fact, the only complaint that I have about this album is the horrible arrangement of the tracks. The cues are mixed and matched in a random fashion that has little to do with the chronological order of the film. Other than that, this is still some of the best film music that you can get your hands on.

5 out of 5 stars Espectacular y emotiva........2006-05-06

Ser? breve. It's a Long Road, en sus versiones instrumentales y en la versi?n cantada de Dan Hill, hacen que merezca la pena comprar este disco.Una Joyita.

5 out of 5 stars One of Jerry's best soundtracks.......2004-12-13

This soundtrack rates as one of Jerry Goldsmith's all-time best. Jerry really outdid himself in this soundtrack. It's too bad in the sequels the music was boring and nothing special.

What is so magical about this music is that Goldsmith has always been a MASTER at chase scenes. Basically, this whole movie is running, running, running (from the cops) and the score makes it suspenseful and exciting. The music transforms a movie that was somewhat ordinary into something extraordinary.

Particularly notable tracks are The Razor and Over the Cliff. Arthur Morton's orchestration is superb. He and Goldsmith collaberated on lots of films and they were a good team. Unfortunately, Morton has recently passed away.

This is one of Goldsmith's top 3 soundtracks. The others I would recommend are Poltergeist and Coma. Unfortunately, Coma is long out of print, and even had a re-issue that went out of print almost immediately after it was released. Coma is interesting because it ALSO has wonderful chase scenes in the music. Poltergeist, of course, has a beautiful and inspiring soundtrack all the way thru the movie.

It is actually a shame that although Goldsmith has done music for 100s of movies, most of his soundtrack music is "blah" and very very boring. These 3 are his best and the only Goldsmith soundtracks I own. I wish more of his movie music were more interesting like these 3.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Goldsmith.......2004-10-27

Arguabley one of Jerry Goldsmith's best, if not, most recognizable scores.

The score to "First Blood" is an inspiration that has classic status written all over it, & every time hear the haunting opening theme to "First Blood", I can't help but think of all the veterans that have fallen in combat.

The best tracks are the opening credits (Rambo finds out about his fallen comrade), the escape (the sequence in the film where Rambo busts out of jail. David Morrell, the author of the book, states in the audio commentary of the DVD release to "First Blood" that the music cue where Rambo comes busting out of the door to the Sheriff's Dept. is one of his personal favorites in the film. I agree).

My only small gripe with the score is, it isn't consistent with the film, in the respects that, the score doesn't go through from beginning to end, but is sporadic with pieces of music put together to make one overall track (i.e. some small pieces of music that is at the beginning of the film is interspersed or blends into another piece of the score that is at the end of the film & vice versa).

The score is rounded out with the great Dan Hill track "It's A Long Road". I still can't figure out why this wasn't released as a single, it has so much potential (maybe somebody can do a remake of it?).
If your curious about great film composer's Jerry Goldsmith is not to be overlooked. This is a must score to have.

5 out of 5 stars One of Goldsmith's Best!.......2004-10-18

This soundtrack took action music to a new level. Goldsmith has created some of the best suspense music ever. From the soundtracks that I have heard, First Blood is Goldsmith's crowning achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Unique fusion of classical and satanic rock, evil vocals, chanting.......2007-04-02

The soundtrack is like the movie. In the movie, a space ship disappears and returns 7 years later. But it is not the same. It now has a personality: PURE EVIL. The music is a big part of the the mood. It is a fusion of classical and satanic hard rock. There are vocals that sound like creepy chanting. The feeling is like a nightmare. The music slows down and speeds up, changes and is explosive toward the end of each track. There are four tracks about 12 minutes each. This is NOT a light CD! You will not be bored!!

4 out of 5 stars Wickedly warped, just like the film........2003-10-25

Excellent mix of techno and classical orchestration. The mood of this disc almost beats out the film in the gloom catagory. A great recording to listen to when the lights are out, it's just plain scary music. MICHAEL KAMEN's best work (next to BAND OF BROTHERS), and when mixed with ORBITAL's electro-drums and a slew of haunting voices, tics, and beeps; makes for a rich, eerie sound environment for fans of the film and not. A great cd for those who really like scary stuff and cool, creeping tempos, EVENT HORIZON is a great soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars Above average for a dance mix style soundtrack........2003-03-04

Someone took the polar opposite contributions of Michael Kamen and Orbital and mixed them together. The result is a album that tries the recreate the feel of the movie, but is a mish-mash of cues that is hard to place in the mind's eye. The techno stuff does get the heart racing and, while I never have been a huge admirer of Michael Kamen (his stuff just sounds a bit bland to me), composing for this horror/sci-fi hybrid brought something interesting out of him. He should do projects like this more often. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A Movie Soundtrack Worth Buying.......2002-04-09

I have bought many CDs based from movies, usually only to be disappointed. This one, however, does not. The mix of techno-beats, classical music and chilling chants will certainly give you goosebumps, if not freak you out. However, there is a problem. The CD is made up of four tracks in total, leaving you to fast forward a fair amount if you want to reach a certain part. Other than that, this is pretty solid. Even if you were only slightly interested in the film I would still recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars exciting mix of orchestra and dance music.......2001-08-28

This is a very different soundtrack. I rate Michael Kamen's work as some of the best, and Orbital is a producers who's been around for years and knows his stuff inside out. The disc is made up of four tracks ranging between 4 mins and 13 mins in length. It is quite spooky in parts, mainly when Orbital's heavily effected drum loops break into the mix. It does add a new dimension to the whol thing, one minute your listening to a nice string section, the next these 909 kick drums and dance loops are interwoven into it. Very classy. My only gripe with this soundtrack is that by the time you reach the last track, its all starting to sound the same. The last (and shortest) track seems to sound more like an edited version of the first track as well. Apart from that, its an excellent and innovative soundtrack. It's a blend of two musical style that sit well with each other when done right, and is something that more composers should incorporate into the scores.

5 out of 5 stars What a score!.......2002-03-05

Rambo: First Blood Part II, although a less than brilliant movie, is blessed with what is arguably one of the greatest action film scores of all time. It's a beautiful blending of orchestra and electronic music, one that sizzles with energy from start to finish. Thankfully Goldsmith does bring back some of the softer, melancholic military themes from First Blood for some of this sequel's brief quiet times. An essential for Goldsmith fans and action film score buffs.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT CHOICE!!!.......1999-02-09

This is an excellent choice for any soundtrack collector or just the average joe. Some of the songs combine both the Rambo theme and an oriental flavor which gives you the feeling of being in that dense jungle alongside John Rambo. Most of these songs are not for the faint of heart! If you like listening to music while you are working out like me then this is definately a soundtrack for you!

I`m a 24 year old guy in Sweden who own 12 soundtrack cd`s. 5 of them Mr. Goldsmith has composed, and i think this one is one of the best. I can go to sleep listening to these tracks. I also own "First blood part 1" witch is really good too.

5 out of 5 stars One Of My Personal Sedimental Favorites.......2005-07-26

I bought this soundtrack on cassette from a second hand records store quite a few years ago now, the music makes me feel i am watching the movie when i am listening to it. I have the Australian version on cassette, but the listing is different, "It's A Long Road" is the opening song, while some of the other instrumental tracks are not in order, but that's not taking anything away from the sheer power & sweeping, beautiful sounds of Jerry Goldsmith's unforgettable score.

5 out of 5 stars Goldsmith is a God!.......2001-10-17

This soundtrack (although too short) is too cool for words. I was so much in love with this when I first bought it that I never thot about buying the score to the sequel because I was too busy listening to this over and over.

The main theme is empathic and patriotic and makes us feel what Rambo is feeling, which is sadness and despair. The action tracks are red hot. "The Razor" is amazing and builds up to a powerful and pressurized explosion of fury as Rambo lays waste to the cops. Other notable tracks are "Over the Cliff" and "Hanging On". This is a CD filled (but not full enough) of action and adventure that will surely excite you. This is very much deserving of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith is da Man!!!!.......2000-09-30

Jerry Goldsmith is argueibly the best movie composer there is!He made First Blood perfect! The movie was very good but Jerry Goldsmith made it even better with this outstanding score!Every single song is amazingly beautiful and the Long Road song by Dan Hill is a true classic! In MY opinion this is one of Goldsmith`s best of all time soundtracks! This cd is pricesless! There is nothing else like this!

5 out of 5 stars Goldsmith Blasts Away With Magnificent Soundtrack.......1999-04-11

Jerry Goldsmith reached his apex in scoring with the music for First Blood, the first of the Rambo films. Goldsmith uses a very large orchestra to capture the ever-chaning moods of the film, and does so with a superb mix of bombast and tenderness.

The main theme is rendered in the opening and closing numbers, Homecoming and It's A Long Road. The open captures Rambo's sense of hope at meeting a long-lost comrade. The close summarizes the final purge of bitterness from Rambo.

In between are many stellar numbers. Goldsmith exacts tremendous virtuoso playing, at times mixing glissandi, multinote intervals, and every other classification of music one can think off to extract the maximum power. It can be breathtaking listening to such cues as the musical chaos of The Tunnel, the savagery of The Razor, and the sheer terror of Hanging On and Over The Cliff.

And then there is tenderness, drawn from the opening half of Mountain Hunt, and from My Town - capturing the sense of failure of Rambo having found that his close friend has died.

Soundtracks don't get better than First Blood. It is a true musical classic.
