Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

The vinyl version is better.......2006-02-19

This is the film version, and it is inferior to the original album release. Often times, soundtrack releases differed from their film versions because composers could tweak passages here and there and get a relaxex, dedicated recording, away from the harsh deadlines of film making. The result was often glorious, as was the case for Jerry Goldsmith's Patton.

Add the famous George C. Scott speeches as prologue and epilogue and you have a classic. But only on vinyl. The vinyl version has better audio quality and is a better performance. It is a shame we are stuck with this dubbed version, which ironically is available on the Patton DVD as well.

Do some research!.......2006-01-14

This is a great CD for collectors. This is the ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK to the film. These arrangements are the ones that were ACTUALLY USED in the film, NOT the ones that were on the album with the speeches. So, if you are looking for the opening and closing speeches, you won't find them here.
Why?
Because there are actually THREE different versions of the score for this FANTASTIC film.
There was another version conducted by Jerry Goldsmith in 1997.
And.... there was ANOTHER one that was recorded in 1970. THAT is the one with the speeches. As far as I know, it has NEVER been released on CD. Hopefully, at some point, someone will see fit to release that version. Personally, I feel those are the best arrangements of the music used in the film. Or, better yet, make a special edition using all 3 versions.
So, you should be HAPPY to have THIS version as well.
By the way, I believe this info is in the liner notes of this CD.

Missed oportunity!.......2006-01-06

While I can appreciate that this release is a very competent recreation of the musical content of the original vinyl, I too was totally dismayed at the absence of Patton's speeches(as delivered by George C Scott) which are virtually inseparable from the music for anyone who owned the original vinyl release.All of which subsequently leaves this release a rather hollow experience.

Two classic scores!.......2005-11-22

This cd includes Frank DeVol's score for the Robert Aldrich classic, "Flight of the Phoenix"; an exciting score for an equally exciting movie. Goldsmith's justifiably famous score for Patton features the original recordings, including the haunting "echoplexed" trumpets. Also, the previous reviewer's one-star rating is rather inexplicable considering this is FILM SCORE release. Why would soundbites from the film be included? Bizarre. All-in-all a great package and a limited edition (only 3,000 copies). Get yours while you can - you won't be disappointed!

Missing the Best .......2005-06-25

This album does not have Patton's opening speech or the closing "All Glory is Fleeting" speech. It misses the two most important segments of the original soundtrack.

In the movie there was a song played when they were working on the plane. I was disappointed to find out it is not on the soundtrack. I am trying to find out what the song is titled.

Where's Gimme Some Lovin?.......2006-08-08

As bizzare as it is where's Steve Winwood's/ Spencer Davis Group Gimme Some Lovin remix that runs at the beginning of the credits. Somebody must have loved that tracks becuase it is soooo out of place. Great version... this one song is it's better than this emotionally overdone movie.

okay...i have come that those of you really listening in this movie will know what you are listening to.
For those of you who were sonically intrigued by the scene where Dennis Quaid, Tyrese and others go to find out the real motives of the "nomads". The scene is all blue and "Ian" is trying to speak the language of these men. There is a tantalizing song playing in the background.

IT IS NOT ON THE SCORE.
IT IS BY A GROUP CALLED MASSIVE ATTACK and the song is called ANGEL.
you won't regret this purchase if you liked the way it was used in the movie.

Varese Records and Twentieth Century Fox brings another Marco Beltrami film score to the forefront "Flight of the Phoenix", featuring 19 short cues with aggressive arrangements loaded with action sequences laced with percussion galore ~ director John Moore shows us just what we thought was going on with The Phoenix, his cast for the film is right up there with Dennis Quaid, Giovanni Ribisi, Tyrese Gibson, Miranda Otto and Hugh Laurie take their characters to the limit and beyond.

Composer Beltrami who has given us top notch film scores from the past...I ROBOT, JOY RIDE, SCREAM, SCREAM 2, SCREAM 3, HELLBOY, TERMINATOR 3 and BLADE II...as a "film-score-buff"...I am more impressed by this composer's musical capabilities with each score he puts out...his new score is very rhythmic with quite a lot of percussion, it could very well rival anything in film music today...brilliant mix of musicians with Beltrami and Pete Anthony conducting The Hollywood Studio Symphony...orchestrations are totally up there, ethnic vocal solos by Petra Haden, ethnic wind solos by Phil Ayling...let the fur fly with forceful biting and moving themes, perfect score for this film ~ opening "ELLIOT", with fast percussion mixed with echoing strings and brass, shifting to the next track "APPROACHING STORM", very large array of orchestration ethnic instruments and vocal sets the mood and the rest fall into place ~ give a listen to "HEAT STROKE", electric guitars and vocals from the desert breakthrough...from one extreme to the other an enjoyable film score.

The bottom line, this is a very good soundtrack...the last track "HOMEWARD", clearly spells out the defeats and triumphs encountered through the storyline and plot...hats off to Robert Townson, Robert Kraft, Michael Knobloch and of course our composer Marco Beltrami for a film scores dream come true with all the frills...just the way we like 'em.
