If nothing else, this is easily the sweetest film ever made about life in the DDR after the Berlin Wall came down. Katarin Sass is the heartily loyal party member in 1980's East Germany. A premature grandmother, she rules a family of premature adults - her brood left fatherless by a patriarch who fled to the West and hasn't been heard since. There are signs of tension between children and mom, but her loyalty to the state provides a safety valve - they can attack her through devotion to the state and obviate more direct lines of assault. As the 80's draw to a close, the GDR's governing regime is already out of steam. Seeing one of her kids assaulted during a crackdown on pro-democracy protesters, Mom has a stroke and falls into a coma.

When she awakes, the Wall has fallen - a secret kept from her by kids desperate to avoid precipitating another stroke. Instead, with the help of friends, her family manufactures a fantasy in which the GDR is not only still around but (to explain all the reunification hype) the victor of the cold war. (The conspirators create phony news reports using footage of people streaming across the wall - apparently *from* the west, rather than desperately lunging towards it as we'd been led to believe; the formula for Coca-Cola was apparently developed in East Germany.) The effects are actually quite funny - especially when one realizes that the kids have to enlist an ever wider circle to maintain their illusion, making the fantasy GDR more of people's revolution than the one it succeeded. However as the mirage is prolonged - against all odds - the family finds that it must confront the inner demons that GDR deprivation and oppression had bottled up.

"Goodbye Lenin" isn't apologia for the East any more than a praise for the triumph of the west. It's a bitingly funny and bittersweet exploration of how common people use political dogma to keep from constructing real lives and, in this case, have to create fake lives when their dogmas prove illusory.

Brilliant music, but DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY on this shortened American version. It is the same as the original German version and is missing five tracks from the vastly superior second European release, which has the complete score. (Except for one track that was taken from Tiersen's Amelie)

Why they stupidly chose the incomplete album for the American CD is beyond me, but you can find the 23 track complete European version for only a few dollars more in most stores, or find it here at Amazon.

On the cover, instead of the photo of the mother and son, the good version that you want will have just the title, in white and black text, on a red background.

If you've not seen Good Bye Lenin! the score is still beautiful. The piano is very light and very touching, but then the score gets more complex with a woodwind quartet(?) and continues gaining complexity with the addition of strings to the quartet. It helps to know why the music is so sad in places, of course, you get a clue as to what's going on in the movie with track titles like "Mother will die."

All in all, it's an amazing movie with an equally amazing filmscore.

While in Europe this pass summer, I saw a gem of a movie being GOODBYE LENIN. Finally it is coming to North America. Already enjoying the work of Yann Tiersen from the French Hit Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain, you will love the music to this movie!

I ordered the 23-track version from Amazon.co.uk two days before Christmas and received it in less than two weeks. It costs a little less than 23 USD after shipping.

I also saw some sellers from the States trying to sell their 23-track version on the UK site, which I find to be a bit strange since no one is selling it through the US Amazon site.

i received the wrong cd (same problem as Paul in NJ "Paul") and have become very frustrated. i have been tempted to just keep this one, although i don't think there is a way for me to get the price difference back. ah well...

I've tried to order the 23-track Good Bye Lenin soundtrack twice now, but Amazon sent me the 18-track (copy-protected) version each time. It's especially frustrating because they have separate pages for each of these two versions. I order it from this page - the one that displays the plain red CD cover and the 23 tracks, but I've had no luck yet. I'll just keep ordering it until they send the right one - and when they do, I'll post that here.

UPDATE: As promised, this is my long-overdue follow-up review, documenting my ultimately failed attempt to get the CD that they show in the photo. Although the CD that they'll ship you isn't exactly the one that's advertised herein (hence, only 2 stars), do consider it for the lovely music that it does, in fact, contain. Not a bad consolation prize, in all.

Yann Tiersen produces some truely amazing music. Get Good Bye Lenin, and also check out Amelie and Rue De Cascades.

But, as stated by another reviewer, be aware that this disc will not work in many CD players, and especially computer CD rom drives.

Apparently this is because the 'copy protection' on the disc breaks the CD standard.

I would suggest buying the music on-line.

Didn't anyone else notice in the film that Yann Tiersen has used the exact track from Amelie entitled "La Valse d'amelie (piano version)" for the scene in Goodbye, Lenin when they are driving through the countryside after the mother has cofessed the truth about how the father left?? it's the exact same track!

Why has Tiersen stolen from his own music? Did he really have so little time/energy/creativity??

Besides this fact, his music is usually beautiful.
