Customer Reviews:
Hamlet sound track - Patrick Doyle.......2006-03-10
I spent a lot of time trying to get hold of this CD but I must say I am mildly disappointed. I thought Patrick Doyle's music for Branagh's Henry V was brilliant and that was why I was determined to obtain this sound track as well. Henry V is not Hamlet in terms of theme and plot but I think the music here tends to be too low key and lacking in drive, unlike Henry V. It is still very good in places and clearly the work of an excellent composer, but not quite up to Doyle's previous standard.
Beautiful masterpiece!!.......2002-02-22
Patrick Doyle has truly composed an awesome piece of work. The score is so well done that you can feel the emotion coming through the music alone. This is by far my favorite soundtrack and I listen to it quite often.
Fantastic collaborations.......2001-06-12
Doyle fans are aware that he collaborates regularly with actor/director, Kenneth Brannagh. With the Hamlet score, he again writes powerful complementary music which also stands alone as worthy to be performed in concert. I would be interested to hear lengthier tracks such as accompanied the lengthy, but indeed beautiful and patient, movie. (The only mistake was Billy Crystal in the movie. I thought Robin Williams did fine work.) Although, I confess, this is my least listened to in my soundtrack collection, I do enjoy it, and believe it deserves accolades.
Patrick Doyle's finest score.......2000-06-26
This is certainly one of my top 3 Patrick Doyle scores and a towering achievement. The score unfolds like a great romantic symphony encompassing several moods from serenity and inner peace ("In Pace"), to violence and lush gothic undertones ("The Ghost", "Now, could I drink hot blood"), and a finaly sense of joyous celebration ("Fanfare", "What Players are they?"). After listening constantly to Mr. Doyle's scores for "Henry V", "Much ado about nothing" and "Frankenstein", I thought he could never top such achievements and somehow he did: "Hamlet" is a masterpiece of thematic inventiveness and dramatic power. The playing is wonderful and the engineering is very clear, taking full advantage of Air Lyndhurst's glorious acoustics. If you are a fan of british classical music or a Shakespeare fan (or even better, a fan of Patrick Doyle), don't pass up this CD. Great film music. No: great music. Period!

Hamlet may have wrestled with "To Be or Not to Be," but he never had to worry about how to tell his story in song. It's a tall order, and it will be interesting to see how Morcheeba fits in this modern adaptation of Shakespeare's classic tale of indecision. The 10 tracks collected here do not fall together in any linear sense. Instead, they create sudden shifts in mood that make for the feeling of a particularly inspired--and hip--mixed tape. Primal Scream begin things with their 1991 cosmopolitan and modernly psychedelic adaptation of legendary Texas acid rocker Roky Erickson's "Slip Inside this House." Morcheeba also takes the psychedelic tack with the paranoiac and ominous "Big Calm," which sounds like what happens when you mix hip-hop with Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd. Newcomer Josh Rouse serves up his impressive piano-driven musings, while Nick Cave, in classic 1982 form with his original band, the Birthday Party, provides the climactic title track. --Rob O'Connor

Good but not Great.......2004-09-27
I like this soundtrack, I really do. The problem is this: I normally buy a movie soundtrack when I hear 1 or 2 musical performances in the movie that are too cool for me to live without. In Hamlet, it was the cool techo-beat you hear in the first opening shots (right before Hamlet speaks his first lines) and the orchestral music heard when the opening movie title, "Hamlet", flashes on the screen - stark white letters on a red background. And this soundtrack CD has...neither of these! But I do still enjoy what it does have. Mostly dark, grunge techno with some good alternative as well.
This is the soundtrack to get.......2002-12-07
This is music for the person who loves music. If you have an appreciation of Shakespeare, and creative and well-made modern reproductions, then you will completely enjoy this soundtrack and how well it not only complements the film, but carries itself as an independent piece of art. This is completely modern -- not classical -- and certainly not pop. You will want to see the film if you have not done so already. The moods will swing you if you let them and you will get lost in this music. I can listen to it over and it will not get old. I rented this DVD and then I bought it and then I bought the music. It is the single-best soundtrack I have ever heard.
Had to Buy It for Senior Lit.......2001-05-18
This CD was something that my group had to buy in order to be able to teach the class about "Hamlet" the play. This CD has some amazing songs and lyrics that helped us to describe some of the characters' emotions in the movie (mainly track number 2). Great for needed literature about "Hamlet."
Hypnotic rythms.......2000-07-16
This collection of hypnotic rythms and passionate beats allows a hip and modern mood to float about the room. The second track, "Big Calm" is my favorite because it's soulful, eerie, and sexy. Other great songs include the jazzy, smooth sound of track # 5, "Sublime" and the hypnotic, mellow sound of track #7. The overall tone of this album is mellow, ecclectic, and moody. I would recommend playing it in the car while driving at night under the stars just to get away...
hamlet (soundtrack) takes another bow.......2000-07-15
I havent had a chance to see the film yet, but if its anything like its soundtrack, I will own it, and probably will have to replace it within a month, as it shall be so used and worn. From the moment I sampled it, it had a deep, residual tone, very unlike most soundtracks ( you tend to find more depth in scores) The sound is fresh, inviting, and non-repetative. More so, the music is new, and non-top 40. I am very impressed with the music on this soundtrack, and I feel anyone with a keen Ear for an excellent musical experience, should pick this up. And use Amazon, cause gosh darnit, they rock.

Interesting electro-acoustic approach.......2005-03-09
I liked the combination of electronics with traditional acoustic intrumentation. This seemed to echo the way the film takes Shakespeare and transposes him into an glossy but existential New York locale.
To buy or not to buy, there is no question. Buy it!.......2002-08-15
Carter Burwell fans will not be dissapointed with this one. This score will take the listener deep into the mind of the obsessed Hamlet, and oh what a dark road it is.
As is the case with many of the great film composers, we get to see what the characters are feeling through the music, and Burwell creates a tremendous feeling of dread, obsession, and revenge within the audience. It's a masterful job and one not easily done.
But buyer beware, this is not for the constant fan of upbeat musical scores. This cd will take you to a realm of dark melodies and a deep feeling of hopelessness. On a brighter note, though, this score is great to write by, especially for dark and gloomy subjects.
To sum it all up, this cd is for the music fan of not only cheery and pleasant music, but also for those who tend to wander into the dark regions of the other spectrum. Good luck to you on this one. The melodies are brilliant and are somewhat hard to forget, stirring emotion deep within the listener. Enjoy and get ready to hear some serious music.
Burwell gets a chance to develop.......2000-08-10
While this album may not be any longer than his others, the cues are, and many of the themes that have been dancing around in his mind, particularly for _Fargo_ and _Gods and Monsters_ went into this. He scored eight other films and got married last year, so developing previous themes is hardly anything to complain about. Most of the tracks on this album are over two minutes, and many longer still. This isn't characteristic of Burwell scores, though I think that's something the film dictates, although it has the same brooding nature and quirky sense of humor that marks those other films. It does contain a descending triad featured in _Being John Malkovich_, but that doesn't automatically make this album a rehash. If you like Burwell, this is an album to get. You'll hear some familiar sounds come to the fore and receive a lot of care.
Unfortunately, there is a problem with this album's sound. Something across between the sound of tape hiss and a high-pitched ring is in the back of every track. It tapers off a bit as the album progresses, but never quite goes away, except where the tracks break. It is a bit irritating, particularly if your player goes automatically goes back to the beginning and starts playing, then you can really notice it. I've heard it on three different systems, and the amount this distortion can be heard varies a great deal, but always seems to be there, intrinisic to this recording.
"each theme underplayed is the power of this score".......2000-08-02
Varese Sarabande presents Carter Burwell's latest score - "HAMLET", many mood swings in this soundtrack, which draws the listener into a music trance. An example of this is track four - "DARKROOM", inner themes that go seemingly into counter melodies and back again. Much of this score is dark and brooding - "TO BE OR NOT TO BE" goes deep into the subconscious - "WIRING OPHEILA" simple and moving effective track - "THE END" which is the final track, very classical sounding to the very last note, with a resounding strike of percussion.
Burwell who gave us such wonderful scores - "MILLER'S CROSSING" (1990) - "ROB ROY" (1995) - "FARGO" (1996) - "THE CONSPIRACY THEORY" (1997) - "GODS AND MONSTERS" (1998) - "THE CORRUPTOR" (1999) - "THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER" (1999), once again proves his talent as a composer knows no boundaries.
This score with each theme underplayed and orchestrated is the power of the entire album, almost what Bernard Herrmann strived for in his film music. The first time you hear this score you dismiss it, but give it another listener and then another, and see if you don't agree. Believe Carter Burwell has given us a classic score, for a very classic title - "HAMLET!"
Total Time: 39:14 on 13 Tracks/ Varese Sarabande - 302 066 125 2 (2000)
Another Burwell triumph.......2000-07-30
this CD is another triumph for Burwell. He wrote and arranged this score for a very small ensemble, and is similar in tone to his previous underrated work for "Gods and Monsters." The music is not overtly beautiful, but still goes a long way in defining the genius of Burwellian darkness. A triumph of small ensemble orchestration. If you need a comparison, steer clear of Doyle's bright and happy (although excellent) score, and look toward Ennio Morricone's version of "Hamlet."
