If you were in New York when Taboo was in previews, you would have thought that all the show's drama took place backstage instead of on it--reports of clashes between producer Rosie O'Donnell, director Mark Renshaw and various members of the cast (including author-actor Boy George) appeared almost daily. But guess what: The show turned out to be a lot better than its reputation, and based on its two cast albums, the Broadway version even improved on the London one. The book was spruced up by playwright Charles Busch and Boy George tweaked his score, adding for instance the opening number "Freaks/Ode to Attention Seekers." This welcome recording confirms that Taboo is an underestimated show. Pop and theatrical at the same time, it even delivers show-stopping power ballads (Liz McCartney's "Talk Amongst Yourselves," Cary Shields's "I See Through You") that could have a second life on cabaret stage or even American Idol. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars The Exotic And Enchanting Sounds Of Arthur Lyman!.......2006-12-19

This is one of the earliest albums that I can recall from my youth. Arthur Lyman was definetly a fixture in my house, and listening to his music always transports me back to my youth. This album is highly recommended; the sounds are very lovely, and beautiful to the ears. I have actually fallen asleep putting this album on the stereo. If you like to be mentally transported to a distant land, then this album will do the trick. The gentle melodies of Arthur Lyman's music are soothing and will put you in a state of total relaxation.

Arthur Lyman started out as a vibraphonist in Martin Denny's band in Hawaii back in the 1950s. [Martin Denny was also great]. When Lyman left the band to form his own, he created a very unique musical style which would result in several albums. [I have them all, thanks to my Mom]. Lyman combined different sounds in his music through the use of a tropical style infused with a jazz sound. The recording of his music was done in the late Henry Kaiser's Shell Bar in Honolulu, which created a unique sound due to the fact that the auditorium was aluminum. This is a highly recommended CD, enjoy the beautiful sound of one of the great instrumentalists of his time.

4 out of 5 stars Bring on the drums and hot dancing natives........2006-11-28

This music has exotic campiness and I enjoyed this blast from the past. I like the Matin Denny stuff a little better, but this is still an entertaining album. A Hollywood/white guy's version of the exotic tropics, but it's fun. Play it for the luau with the neighbors and bring me a Mai Tai.

5 out of 5 stars Taboo. The Exotic Sounds of Arthur Lyman.......2006-11-03

Both Arthur Lyman and Martin Denny led similar sounding groups that specialised in what was then called "Exotica". It sounds pretty corny today but it's good fun and well done. Beneath all the wild bird and animal calls there are very good musicians who play some pretty good music. The original labels, Hi-Fi for Lyman and Liberty for Denny must have done well out of these guys.

5 out of 5 stars Another trip into ther Jungle of Mai Tais, roast pig, and suburban chic!.......2006-09-18

Along with Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman created a luscious, sensual, and totally FAKE tropical soundscape..... But so what? The music is enchanting, and all you need is a tequila sunrise, (OK so its not a Mai Tai, but hey I'm Chicano!) you hammock, and a glorious Saturday summer afternoon, next to your significant other.... and voila!

YOU are "lost" in your own tropical eden. Not to bad for the price of a CD.....

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing and Romantic .......2006-03-10

I remember this music from the 60's, but I'd forgotten how relaxing and romantic it is. Put on the CD, close your eyes and be transported to a tropical island.

5 out of 5 stars I never saw the show on Broadway, but..........2006-02-18

I never saw the show on broadway, but the music is awesome, I wish I had! It ran for such a short time, I never had the chance to see it. The only day I was in NYC during it's run the show was dark :-(. But, Euan Morton, Cary Shields, how can you go wrong?

5 out of 5 stars Great Pop CD !.......2005-06-18

Despite this being a theatrical score, "Taboo" doubles as a terrific pop cd, filled with many great melodies & messages. Best tracks include:

Stranger In This World
Everything Taboo [great dance song!]
Talk Amongst Yourselves
Out Of Fashion [the voices blend beautifully together]
Il Adore [gut-wrenching song]

It's really too bad the show didn't hang around a bit longer ... maybe it was just ill-timed. I also wish the U.S. version had contained "Touched By The Hand Of Cool", but it was dropped for some reason.

Thanks Rosie for introducing this music to us!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing show, amazing music!.......2005-01-08

Taboo has a great score and a great cast to perform it. I saw the show once, not knowing what to expect, but by the first number "Freak/Ode To Attention Seekers" I fell in love with it, and the rest was just as good. The songs are great and the cast is very talented. Someone who would be put off by the visuals of the show should still give the music a try (I got some friends in school to listen who I know would never have seen the show, and they liked the music).
I was disappointed that Boy George's score did not win a Tony, nor did the two actors nominated for their roles, Euan Morton and Raul Esparza, who were fantastic. Sadly, it is too late to see the show anymore, but the music still lives on. This album is a great addition to a CD collection and I reccommend buying it if you have not already done so!

4 out of 5 stars There is still humor in Art.......2005-01-02

A really great cast album. I saw the play twice and loved it. I laugh every time I play the CD remembering the wit in a very fond look back at the 80's. Boy George was almost as over the top as Leigh Bowery and his musical numbers are quite a treat. Euan Morton's voice on "Stranger in this World" is moving and seemingly heartfelt. And I just cannot say enough of Jeffrey Carlson's rendition of "Genocide Peroxide" Fabulous!

For the life of me I could not understand why the play was not so well received but after the recent Presidential election I realize that there are not as many open minded people out there as I thought.

The way that "Out of Fashion" uses a line from each previous song I thought was unique and shapes a very interesting song. But the whole CD is really, really worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-12-22

I absolutely LOVE this soundtrack!!!!! I got it on Saturday, August 21st at Circuit City and is my all time favorite CD right now. I know most of the songs, but I'll learn other songs like ''The Fame Game (aka Fame is What She Wanted),'' ''Talk Amongst Yourselves,'' ''Come On In From the Outside'' and ''Petrified.'' The songs I know are: ''Freak/Ode to Attention Seekers,'' ''Stranger in This World,'' ''Safe in the City,'' ''Dressed to Kill,'' ''Genocide Peroxide (aka Evil),'' ''I'll Have You All,'' ''Sexual Confusion,'' ''Guttersnipe (aka Stars From the Gutter),'' ''Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,'' ''Church of the Poison Mind/Karma Chameleon,'' ''Everything Taboo,'' ''Out of Fashion,'' ''Il Adore,'' and...........

OF COURSE, THE NUMBER 1 TABOO SONG THAT YOU CAN'T HAVE A TABOO CD WITHOUT..........

''ICH BIN KUNST''!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love that song so much! In fact, it's my favorite Boy George song!

I will also learn ''Love is a Question Mark.'' I love to sing these songs in the car or to my friends in recess at school.

To say that the Kronos Quartet's Nuevo is their most adventurous outing to date is hardly an understatement. This diverse collection of Mexican compositions and traditional tunes brims with an unpredictable energy and a dazzling array of Latin American guest performers, and, yes, Kronos keeps up throughout. A cocktail pop tune from Esquivel gets covered, there's a chamber arrangement of Revueltas's sprawling orchestral work Sensemaya, and Nortec Collective member Plankton Man remixes Kronos's interpretation of "El Sinaloense" into a sizzling dance music track, which closes the disc. The playing is spirited, to say the least (just check out "El Llorar," with guest vocalists Alejandro Flores and Efren Vargas). But this is foremost a party record. A bevy of reverb effects and instrumentation (including a squeaky musical leaf solo on "Perfidia") ensures that things stay unpredictable. Production work by Rock en Espanol producer Gustavo Santaolalla infuses this disc with an edgy modernism. The bulk of these compositions have been arranged by composer Osvaldo Golijov, who seemingly brings a manic energy and a playfulness to everything he touches. Chamber music purists may scoff, but the rest of us will be busy dancing and thrilling to this exciting, genre-blurring Kronos project. --Jason Verlinde

Album Description

With 'Nuevo' - a project based entirely around Mexican composers, musical traditions and influences - the Kronos Quartet have delivered one of the most striking group odysseys to date. Produced by Gustavo Santaolalla, both an authority on Latin American art music as well as the most in-demand producers of rock en espanol, the album also features a host of guest artists from both the concert hall as well as the streets of Mexico. Housed in a slipcase. 2002.

3 out of 5 stars screeching mariachi's.......2007-01-09

I bought it for the one-armed grass-leaf player. It's worth it just for that, but the first track is enough to put you off the rest of the album. It gets better once the rhytms overtake the sound.

3 out of 5 stars Good music, disappointing liner notes.......2005-12-07

At about 66 minutes, this recording is a better value than some of their CDs. But one almost constant complaint that I have with Kronos Quartet releases is their poor or non-existent liner notes. This release is especially guilty. There is a big, thick booklet of worthless photography--mediocre pictures reproduced poorly on cheap paper. Were they trying to throw some some photgraphers a bone? There is nothing about the composers (except their birth dates) or their music, or the musician's perspective, etc. And, since some of the composers are deceased, an opportunity was lost to discuss their music and their lives.

Very, very poor production decisions.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2005-11-05

If you by chance still don't know what Kronos`s is about remember that there are two types of chamber music ensembles: Kronos and the rest. So if you have in your mind the traditional sound, aesthetic of a string quartet, go for the rest (Alban Berg, Ittaliano, Melos, Emerson...) and forget Kronos. For if I had only one chance to apply the title- word "avant-garde", I would do it concerning Kronos. They are irreverent. Forget traditional repertoire (and Bartok is traditional for them). As far as I know they play modern music (Glass, Reich, Scnittke) or new repertoire like World Music. They play with amazing virtuosism and richness of textures. If you try to explore Kronos world, open your mind to a new, non conventional type of sounds.
So what is "Nuevo"? A diverse, impressive, multilayered (that is, there are several strata, several kind od compositions) portrait of Mexican music. A comprehensive landscape of Mexican music. But ... not exactly mexican music is what you hear in most of the tracks, but the Kronos' POINT OF VIEW, that is, Mexico through Kronos' glasses. For I don`t find a truly traditional Mexican track (perhaps only "Son Huasteca" and that before 12/12 are those which most resemble to a truly traditional "Mexican" sound). Almost everything in this rich album is a new way of listening to mexican music.
Why? Arrangements are varied and colourfull. Every track shows novelty and spontaneity, even in well known pieces like "Perfidia" or "Sensemaya". All in this CD is "Nuevo (New)": music that you have not listened before, no matter your knowledge on Mexican music!!
The type of music is quite diverse: classical (Sensemaya), TV music (Chavosuite), bolero (Perfidia), local music (Sinaloense), processional music (12/12), even dance music!!
The sound is also quite strange sometimes: the editor distorts some tracks in order to show the quartet as if they were listened through an old radio player. This is quite amazing!!! or listen to 12/12: quartet strings combined with recording of a traditional "ritual" music and fireworks. Also there are includede street noises between the tracks, thus creating a kind of "leitmotive", like a "Concept Album".
Let me say this: I don't care of mexican music. I don't know too much of it. Nor it is something I love. What I like of this CD is not Mexican music legacy but WHAT KRONOS DOES WITH IT. I think they could do the same with every (rich) music culture in the world. The reason why Mexico is chosen perhaps is a personal experience of Kronos' members (as I have red in an interview).
Booklet contains track details, a lot of credits but not a single word of commentary about the music (a pity).
More than great Mexican music, this is a great Kronos show. If you like Kronos or want to investigate what Kronos truly is and /or If you like mexican music, buy it!
If you don't like mexican music, buy it too!! You will think, as I do, that this Kronos release is essential.

5 out of 5 stars f-u-n ........2004-05-27

this is a great album to listen to on a hot summer day at the beach,or any sunny activity in general.I must admit that I do enjoy the darker side of kronos' music more, but one truly can't help but grin when on the third or fourth track the music pauses for a sudden "yelp"!yes,it may sound a bit goofy and the more stern folks are certain to frown upon such playfulness in the "sophistocated"world of classical music, but this is a good thing.as another reviewer stated, the music really isn't very complex but that should be no obstacle for any kronos-loving individual.oh,yes-if you have children be prepared for them to go absolutly BONKERS when you play this!(finally veggietales can be given a rest!)

3 out of 5 stars Mexican music performed by Kronos Quartet ??.......2003-07-26

I had to listen to it !

Well, first I must say that it is very rewarding to find such a talented international ensemble to interpret our music. Some of the tracks are really outstanding. Particularly 12/12 and the Chavosuite.

But, in the other hand, the purposely out of tune interpretation of El Sinaloense is deceiving (do our Mariachis sound so terrible ?) and the solo wistle in "Perfida" really destroyed the sesibility and charm of this melody. I mean, why on earth did't they play it with a violin instead ?

For the rest, it is a very original album, and it shurely reflects the impression that causes our culture. The inclusion of live sounds in a marketplace and of the "carretonero" buying old shoes and clothes, makes a specially beautiful ambiance.

It is also an album with a very humorous approach. (Some of the tracks sound like if they had been arranged by P.D.Q. Bach !) Get it if you are looking for something original and different, but please buy something else if you really want to know what mexican music is.

Don Tiki's new collection of exotic and danceable tiki tunes is brimming with haunting melodies and sultry undulating rhythms on 11 hypnotic tracks. Top DJs from around the globe remixed the tracks from their original releases, "The Forbidden Sounds of Don Tiki" and "Skinny Dip with Don Tiki" which included special guest artists Martin Denny, Lopaka Colon, and ukelele wizard, Jake Shimabukuro. The new album features the hit, "The Other Side of the Moon," remixed by Ursula 1000 of NYC as heard on the Samsung Electronic worldwide TV campaign. A review in Time Out/NY states, "Don Tiki have a sexy allure along with flair and a good sense of humor." The Honolulu Advertiser says, "Don Tiki captures exotic sounds, party spirit...this is Martin Denny for the Millenium!" This sensuous, flowing piece of work is an instant classic.

3 out of 5 stars not what i expected.......2005-01-10

Its my own fault really, I didn't listen to the music samples provided. This was suggested by amazon as a "Best Value" added to my purchse of a Pink Martini album. I assumed they would be similar. This album is nothing at all similar to Pink Martini. I wouldn't recommend it as an addition to one of those albums as Amazon is suggesting. its probably a really good album if you like this kind of music, just not my cup o tea.

5 out of 5 stars Exotica for the Now Generation.......2004-08-31

As implied by the title, this is a remix of classic Don Tiki sounds, which pay homage to Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman and all the forefathers of exotica. Even repertory tracks have been mixed, reshaped, refined and re-invented by a coterie of top deejays - call it Martin Denny for the millennium - and the tunes take on new sass. Among the delights: "The Other Side of the Moon" by Ursula 1000 of New York, "An Occasional Man" by Keith Kandell of Los Angeles, "Bwana Banana" by Br Cleve's Bongo Congo Mix of Boston, "Polyamore" by Poi Dog Pondering of Chicago and "All Quiet Flows the Don" by 8FatFat8 of Chicago. There's a mix of sultry, intermittent vocals with inventive instrumentals. This is party music that collates a myriad of styles, from exotic jazz to ska, from funk to pop. Light the tiki torches, turn on the lava lamps, haul out the tiki mask and start groovin!'

5 out of 5 stars Unique but tasty recipe.......2004-07-22

Every couple of years we are treated to a new neo-Exotica treasure from Honolulu's Don Tiki. The new album, Adulterated, is a remix project featuring 11 tunes from their first two albums.

Now I'm sure some of you are thinking this is a recipe for disaster (we are all too aware of failed "lounge" remix projects, right?). In this case, Don Tiki have done it the right way.

For the most part, the remixes stay true to the vibe of the original songs, so things are mellow and relaxing and not hyper and kinetic. Some good tracks in this mode are All Quiet Flows the Don, remixed by 8FatFat8, and Close Your Eyes, remixed by A Certain Frank.

Adulterated features three standout tracks, starting with DJ Jimmy B's remix of The Natives Are Restless. Now, we're big fans of the original song but Jimmy B's remix takes it up a notch. Extremely effective remix effects and nice spoken word pieces highlight this mix, along with chanting to die for. Br Cleve contributes a HiNRG "Bongo Congo" mix of Bwana Banana that somehow fits in even though this has a much higher BPM than the rest of the album. Lastly, Clutch Cargo Cult gets a great remix from 8FatFat8 that includes a nice rap by Julio Davis.

Now, things aren't all Mai Tai's for Adulterated. An Occasional Man has a syncopated remix style that I found annoying (honestly, I'm not a fan of the original version either) with several grating effects.

Overall, though, Adulterated delivers a unique brand of Exotica that could be featured in many discos without much notice. Don Tiki have done it again!

3 out of 5 stars Not up to par with the old masters.......2006-07-04

I bought this album on the strength of the reviews here and brief samples available for download. I love Exotica music, but once you've got some Denny, Lyman, and Baxter, it's tough to find anything contemporary that comes close. Well, this does come close, but it's just not quite there. There are a couple things in particular that got in the way of my enjoying this album. The first and biggest complaint is the over-reliance on synthesized instruments, which you don't totally get the feel of in the Amazon samples. A bongo drum track and synthesized vibes make me think of a recording studio, not a tropical paradise. Also, some of the vocals sounded a little tinny and grating to me. From now on I'll stick to the work of the past masters. If you are considering buying, I'd recommend going to the Don Tiki website and listening to some of the samples there. They are longer than the Amazon samples and will give you a better feeling for what the music really sounds like.

If you like music by Les Baxter and Martin Denny, then you will enjoy this CD also.

5 out of 5 stars the real deal.......2003-02-21

ive been a fan of denny and baxter for years, and thought i would never see the day when a combo would capture the vibe of these archtypes. So i put off buying this record with the fear of being let down, what a mistake!!! this record is brilliant!!!
all the elements are there including the production, and it can be safely said that don tiki is of the caliber of his influences.
if a hammock in the sun or the smell of the sea are your ideas of pleasure, this record will transport you where you want to go.

5 out of 5 stars Pure lounge.......2002-12-18

How i love this album! Listening to it is like sliding into a luscious dream where beautifull people sip martini's by the pool, skies are blue and all worries seem distant. It has this great cinematic feel to it, taking you back to the late
fifties/early sixties. It reminded me allot of the early Bond movies. Apart from the beautifull atmosphere this music airs, it's also brilliantly composed and produced.

5 out of 5 stars Lazy day acid-jazz..........2002-01-06

UFO's creatively bizarre mixing of styles produced some of the best mid 90's funky, acid-jazz and "No Sounds too Taboo" is arguably their best album. Despite the typically odd arrangements that permeate most of its tracks - a mixture of off-the-wall vocals, weird instrumentation and "lounge-lizard" backbeats - there's nothing too challenging here other than a set of ingenious, well produced workouts that are ideally suited for a lazy afternoon's listening. Sounds negative?... well making genuinely interesting laid-back music is no easy task and on "Stolen Moments", "Mistress of Dance" and most of the other tracks on this album UFO hit the button perfectly. Arty, clever and fun... the cover says it all !

5 out of 5 stars funky acid jazz.......2000-05-26

In my opinion, there are only two bands who make excellent acid jazz music: the brand new heavies (who are from england) and UFO (who are from japan). This album is simply excellent. It's funky, groovy and quite sophisticated. You can't prevent from dancing around when you hear it and at the same time, it's enough elaborated to be appealing for a demanding audience... As I was saying, also check out the brand new heavies' releases (especially shelter and brother sister or the best of, "trunk funk")

3 out of 5 stars Very mellow..........2000-03-30

I bought this after all I heard about UFO and definately wasn't disapointed. UFO has a sound that is pretty unplaceable although I would say if you are into this then listen to Manu Chau, some of the less weird stuff by Sukia ('Dream machine' being quite close), Coldcut, and The Herbaliser. I especially reccomend the last two. UFO's album, while at times a tad mediocre, is uplifting and cool all the way through. Stand out tracks are 'United Future Airlines' and 'Doopsyllolic' which is veeery funky. They are a group to watch out for, they are destined for big things. However, if you are new to UFO then I would reccomend their eponymous debut album, very funky with fantastic samples.

5 out of 5 stars bravo, United Future organization is what it all about........1999-01-02

I liked many of the songs on this album. But The Track I lked most was "Kissing your Father". It created such joy in my soul while i listened to the bliss of trumpets that made my heart pound.

5 out of 5 stars One of Zorn's best, and probably a great place to start........2005-03-17

Even for John Zorn, this one manages remarkable diversity-- essentially, I've likened "Taboo & Exile" to Naked City, only with moods held. Rather than jumping from one mood to the next to the next to the next in the course of a two and a half minute song, Zorn sustains feels and moods for the entire length of a piece. The result of Zorn's compositions, when combined with the stunning array of talented musicians contributing, is amazing. Somehow, this may be the best place to start looking at Zorn's work-- it certainly encompasses his many interests, but because ideas are allowed to develop, it presents them in an easier to digest fashion.

While the album is set up to provide a story (or perhaps to serve as a soundtrack without a movie?), I'm going to discuss the pieces instead with respect to the ensembles that play them-- there are several groups that perform on the various tracks.

The Masada String Trio (Mark Feldman on violin, Erik Friedlander on cello, and Greg Cohen on bass) are very prevelent in this music, either performing by themselves or with others. This is really always a good thing, as these three gentlemen are masters of their instrument and have a virtually psychic bond. The pieces they perform on alone ("Mayim" and "Makkot") both sound like they could have been lifted from the Masada songbook-- they've both got that sort of Eastern European meets jazz played by chamber musicians feel that the string trio has. "Mayim" is somewhat unique in that the improv section contains a rather drastic and powerful arco attack by Feldman and Friedlander that is among the best they've recorded, and "Makkot" features some of the trademark pizzicato work the trio does so well.

The trio also appears on two songs with keyboardist Jamie Saft and percussionist Cyro Baptista. The album's opener, "In the Temple of Hadjirim", uses the trio and organ as a drone over percussion whilst a simple melody is stated on piano. The effect of this near-ambient statement is startling, especially given the expectation of Zorn as a noisemaker (the good news is, the second track on the record gets us to our expectations, see "Sacrifist", below). The breezy "Zeraim", a great little tune by the same ensemble, conforms more to the string trio's sound, but is enhanced nicely by soft percussion and piano line, its actually one of the nicest pieces on "Taboo & Exile", really superb.

Another group we see a couple of times on this one consists of guitarists Fred Frith and Marc Ribot, bassist Bill Laswell, and drummer Dave Lombardo. As one would expect with a former Slayer drummer and two muscular guitarists, the two tracks they feature on ("Sacrifist" and "Chaalapalassi") are more rock-oriented, but actually more in the vein of King Crimson-esque improvs. One piece is droning metal, the other is a bubbling improv that eventually boils into a structured improv over the course of ten and a half minutes. The same group, minus Ribot, but with Zorn's sax, plays a much more structured Zorn wailing over rock rhythm section piece that could have fit in easily among the Naked City material.

The final group appearing on more than one track is Cyro Baptista and drummer Joey Baron, playing the circular, funky, percussion piece "Oryojang" in two parts-- this one for me actually screams for a lead which it lacks. Its a great piece with a nice groove, but I'd love to hear a guitar or horn over it. Then again, I suspect mood was the point, rather than coherency.

A couple more tracks associate together not by the musicians that play on them, but by their style. "Bulls-eye" is a punky, surfish piece, with a shouted lead vocal and Beach Boysesque harmony lines courtesy of Mike Patton, punky surf guitar from Robert Quine (lead) and Marc Ribot (rhythm), and anchored by Chris Wood and Sim Cain. This is actually another favorite of mine of this record, its a lot of fun and punk energy. The other surf piece, "A Tiki For Blue", featuring Ribot on guitar, Saft on organ, Greg Cohen on bass, and Robert Rodriguez on percussion, has a cooled out, laid back, churning feel. Another great piece, Ribot really was born to play Zorn's music.

The only other piece, "Oracle", features a wordless, half sung vocal by Miho Halori, featuring Saft, Friedlander and Baptista as accompaniment, it has the feeling of a wind-down and is almost trancelike in its arrangement.

I realize this review told you very little about the quality of the music, but rest assure, the material is all incredible. Its diversity and stellar performance is what leads one to this impression-- like Naked City, every time you think you know what to expect on the record, Zorn throws another curve ball at you. One thing about John Zorn that lets him do this is that he really excels at moving between styles, and he brings with him an array of musicians that really is without compare.

If you're unfamiliar with John Zorn's work, this or "Naked City" is a good place to start. If you know Zorn and don't have this, you should get it if either Naked City or the Masada work is of interest to you. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars stolen song........2003-08-11

This is the second volume in John Zorn's Music Romance series. The first album, _Music for Children_, was a diverse work expressing the dark aspects of childhood. Naked-City-style pieces, music box themes, eerie chamber music, wind machines, and more were featured, all musically exploring the album themes. Despite the musical diversity, it fit together quite nicely. _Taboo & Exile_ seems to have a theme presented by the packaging that may or may not be reflected in the music, I have no idea at this point. Beneath the dark album jacket is a bizarrely sexualized photo of a little Japanese girl, even though if you stop and think about it it's not actually sexual in any way in and of itself. So it's a rather striking way of distinguishing between innocence and maturity-adulthood-experience. Actually, reading that Jazziz review Amazon gives us on this page informed me about the "image of Saveur St. Cyr's temple skull tied to a small chair with whip" and I will have to look into that. In any case I haven't made any connection between the package and the music yet. Musically, the album is exotic, darkly sensual, and sad (hmmm). Some of the songs highlight a sense of contrast. For example, "Zeraim" is a remarkable Mediterranean-esque piece for piano, percussion, and strings. Here Zorn shows an ability to hide great complexity and rhythmic variation in melodies that remain pleasant and catchy. "In the Temple of Hadjarim", with mellow free piano and primitivist percussion, is like the integration of intersubjectively foreign Jazz concepts, East meets West. There is "The Possessed" also, a slow, assaultive which conveys great aggression despite its often-minimalist, rapid melodic fragments. The build-up on this one is very intense, and it is the only song Zorn himself plays on, and he contributes some vicious sax. On "Sacrifist", Lombardo's thrash-metal speed comes in handy for an urgent percussion backdrop for the roaring, monster guitars of Fred Frith and Marc Ribot and thick bass feedback from Bill Laswell. This song is quite noisy and frightening yet completely enslaves your attention because it is AWESOME. "Thaalapalassi", with the same lineup as "Sacrifist", is an eerie, primal buildup from pointillism to beastly screeching. It then retreats into the Hellish realm from which it came. Another reviewer on this page described it as "ambient heavy metal" and I wholeheartedly agree with that. "Makkot" and "Mayim" are scored for Eric Friedlander on cello, Mark Feldman on violin, and Greg Cohen on bass -- they are very twisty Masada-esque pieces and they are very good. "Oracle" is a strange, mellow track with a Cyro Baptista percussion loop being run under plucked cello, feather-light organ, and childlike Japanese vocals from Miho Hatori. "Koryojang", a hypnotic percussion duet between Cyro Baptista and Joey Baron, appears twice -- once in its full six-minute form and once as a short reprise with the added tag "end credits" for the final track. End credits for WHAT, I have no idea. From these descriptions (assuming they are coherent), you would be right in thinking this album is very diverse. However, it hangs together _very_ well, much like _Music for Children_ did. But maybe it's more of a metaphysical link than a musical one. "Bulls-Eye", with Mike Patton screaming over a catchy rock groove, doesn't seem to fit but I still like it. Oh, and for anyone who has _Music for Children_ and thinks "Cycles du Nord" was the worst thing ever, you will be happy to know there are no sound sculptures or other whack avant-garde compositions on this album. (Hey, I actually *like* "Cycles du Nord", but anyway you cut it, it IS a song made of wind.) Okay, bad enough that this review is all one paragraph, it probably doesn't even make SENSE. But really, For Zorn newbies and the hardcore fan, this is beautiful, excellent stuff. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

5 out of 5 stars Start right here.......2002-08-06

John Zorn is a guy I've been known to slag off from time to time as a bit of a dabbler, a dilletante, a charlatan, a shaman, a jack of all trades and master of none - you name it. But there's no denying that the little ultra-independent musical world he's set up for himself is something to be admired, and occasionally the musical results are also stunning. For my two cents, "Taboo and Exile" is one of his best.

Firstly, it features almost everything in his ouvre - avant-garde classical, klezmer, lounge, free jazz, noise, hardcore/grind and much more - but more importantly the selection of material is choice. Unlike other Zorn albums, the disparity of styles doesn't work against it, the jarring differences smoothing over into what actually sounds like a proper, thematic album; and also, the tracks are allowed a certain length of time to develop the material, unlike some of Zorn's 30-second blasts that litter a few of his lesser albums (that schtick was pretty cool in '91, but wore its welcome out long ago, I say).

So anyway, you get free-jazz squawks, hardcore blasts, percussive workouts and chamber pieces all complemented by the ace musicianship of folks like Bob Quine, Fred Frith, Marc Ribot, Dave Lombardo, Cyro Baptista and others, and all wrapped up in the ultra-fancy packaging you've come to expect from Tzadik. Mr. Zorn has been on a bit of a winning streak the last few years with his releases, and "Taboo & Exile" is definitely an excellent place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for Zorn lovers.......2002-06-06

This is a truly eclectic collection of Zorn compositions with different combos of musicians who've often worked with him providing a cornucopia of sounds. Some of the players are Fred Frith, Bill Laswell, Joey Baron, Marc Ribot, Mark Feldman, Greg Cohen, Robert Quine, Mike Patton, and Eric Friedlander, to mention only those with whom I was already familiar. The stark contrasts between the combos and the compositions may bother some listeners who are fans of only a limited segment of Zorn's oevre, but to me, this is a wonderful sampler that belongs in the collections of true Zorn fans of which I am most certainly one.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic, and positively so.......2000-07-05

John Zorn often has a tendency to produce rather scatalogical works with little rhyme or reason to their (lack of) flow. Taboo and Exile reflects this to some extent, but it sound less like a saxophonist suffering from ADD and rather has a pleasant continuity amongst its varied compositions. Being the second in the "New Romance Series," this release has a certain flare about it, occasionally capturing the same tenderness of Antonio Carlos Jobim ("In the Temple of Hadjarim," "Zeraim"). Other tracks are more in the math-rock vein of Ruins or perhaps Naked City, while others are more in the string-quartet approach of the Masada catalogue or Kristallnacht. Zorn himself only performs on one piece, while the lineup revolves on each track otherwise. All of these things considered, Taboo and Exile works surprisingly well as an album rather than a disparate collection of moodswings. Perhaps the best Zorn release I've heard in the last few years, with the exception of the live Masada releases.

Islands exotic, bird calls, mambo, excellent music with class and dignity. Great for party mix with mad professor and Arabian groove and how about a little Perez Prado thrown in there.

4 out of 5 stars excellent.......2003-11-06

if you like lounge music and exotica, this is a great CD, lots of lush melody and percussion.

5 out of 5 stars Great exotica music.......2003-08-22

Someone once wrote that Arthur Lyman never made a bad LP... and they were right. Everything he did was done from the heart and was just plain "good stuff". On this album in particular, give a listen to Taboo Tu (which he & his pianist wrote when they discovered they needed another cut to fill the session). Good stuff! Beautiful Kahana and Moon of Manakoora take you to paradise in a heartbeat. And his rendition of Ebb Tide is fabulous. Arthur Lyman was the King of Exotica!!

4 out of 5 stars Mello Tiki Lounge Music.......2001-07-12

The CD is good mellow atmosphere music that makes you feel lke your on the islands in a jungle tiki lounge, it is not that brassy intrusive sound like Martin Denny's music. You even have jungle sounds mixed in to add to the atmosphere.

3 out of 5 stars The cover is better than the music.......2001-06-12

Although I am a fan of Lyman's music, as well as that of Martin Denny, this album leaves something to be desired. First of all, the music is quite uneven. In addition, a few of the songs get really loud in volume compared to the rest of the disc. The cover of the CD however is classic. It reminds me of the shrunken heads they used to sell at Disneyland.

4 out of 5 stars Well done--again! ... However..........2006-04-10

If you love Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, and similar exotica---then you will probably enjoy "Skinny Dip" as well. However, you will only love the CD if you also dig jazz greats such as Flora Purim, Yma Sumac, and Chick Corea. The only reason I rated this 4-stars instead of five-stars, is because I just didn't think this CD offers the consistent level of originality associated with other Don Tiki albums. Don't get me wrong, it's hands down a great CD... but aside from a couple of very original gems like "The Hypnotizing Man" and "All Quiet Flows the Don", you may be better off buying CDs from the originals masters.

5 out of 5 stars ATOMIC Magazine Review.......2003-07-16

Don Tiki's second CD, "Skinny Dip with Don Tiki" has a more lush, suave sound that tries to bring the exotica vibe into the 21st century. The hard-driving rhythms in songs like "Pinakbet" and "Heat" show off their Latin jazz influences, while their slow seductive arrangements of "All Quiet Flows the Don" and "Wet Cave" transport you far away from civilization. In the midst of the CD's sincere instrumentals, the band still finds time for tongue-in-cheek vocal numbers, like the inviting "The Other Side of the Moon," sung by Hai Jung, the velvety "The Natives are Restless," crooned by Delmar de Wilde, and the eerie yet intoxicating "Axoltl," which is their tribute to multi-octave exotica singer Yma Sumac.

The seamless flow of their second release is mesmerizing. Their live show is not to be missed, but if you can't catch them in person in Honolulu, check out their website for QuickTime videos of the band performing with their troupe of gorgeous Polynesian dancers.

4 out of 5 stars Different Than the First.......2002-08-14

I need to disagree with a few of the posts below. Don Tiki's new effort is not that similar to their first album.
- There are far more vocal pieces on this album
- The instrumentals aren't as hot or lush

Where the first album was like Les Baxter or Martin Denny, this one is more like Don Ho (although, admittedly with one Yma Sumac-like number). This isn't a bad thing, just a different thing than I was expecting.

This album is far more coolly produced as well, never reaching the true fiery energy that permeated The Forbidden Sound on tunes like Hot Like Lava, Barbi in Bali, Itchy Palms or even the luscious Maidenhair Fern.

It's a good time though, and certainly better than most of the garbage being produced today. Slap it on at your next luau or barbecue, with a mai-tai in one hand and your hula honey in the other, and see if it doesn't keep the party going.

5 out of 5 stars Don Tiki does it again with more modern Exotica.......2002-03-17

The follow-up to Forbidden Sounds, Don Tiki's new album again combines sweeping range of exotic, mellow, upbeat, and loungy tunes, moving the art of Exotica forward into the new millennium. The album features 15 tracks, with a sound consistent with their previous release. The vocals are more native/island sounding that your typical mainland-produced track from the 60's, but here it only adds to the atmosphere. The liner notes are written by none other than Sven Kirsten, author of the Book Of Tiki.

This is a disc that any Exotica collector must add to their collection. Pick this album up and listen to it, now. It's another glimpse into the almost non-existant genre of Modern Exotica.

5 out of 5 stars DJJimmyBee on Don Tiki.......2002-02-09

Having seen Don Tiki perform at the legendary closing of the 50's Polynesian-styled Kahiki Lounge in Colombus, Ohio in 2000, it is a pleasure to see the Hawaii-based bearers of the musical Tiki Torch return to the studio to represent again on record the Spirit of Exotica. Performing under the baton of Fluid Floyd and keyboardist Perry Coma, this versatile combo represents the century 21 version of paradise envisioned by pioneer Martin Denny the 1950's. To insure Denny's legacy a cover of his "Primitiva" is included here on an album brimming with provocative titles like "El Producto", "Bwana Banana", and "Wet Cave". Fans of the band's first album "The Forbidden Sounds of Don Tiki" will be pleased to note the growth of their sound as well as a remarkably well recorded product from Taboo Records. This album pickes up where the first one ended and showcases maturation of the group who despite adding new musical ideas, keep the sound true. Mix a Stardust, slip into something scant, and prepare to take an exotic Skinny Dip with Don Tiki.

5 out of 5 stars Loudness shine - Breaking the Taboo.......2007-05-10

I completely agree with the other reviewer. There is a distinct difference in the Loudness sound at times. But their song writing and musical ability still amazes me! The musicianship is incredible and some songs have that (Lightning Strikes)sound. Sick World and Risk taker are incredible songs. Loudness are progressing in their own imaginative way. The music Rocks! They were great at the BB king club in NY. If you want to hear the old stuff buy - Rock Shocks 2006. Loudness almost live with no audience. Akira still has it, as does the rest of the band.

5 out of 5 stars Loudness got heavier and more darker.......2007-03-10

I wanted to point out that if you were Loudness fans from 80s, you may not find this album very pleasing. The band sounds (tuned down) and it's more heavier and actually some of the songs are very fast and catchy with the full original members again. I gave 5 stars because if you step back and listen to this album you can actually appreciate what they can still offer nowadays in their mid 40s ...still pursuing their music, but with newer approach. My good old time favorites are from 80s when the vocals were Minoru Nihara and Mike Vescera. Those days the guitar tuning for example were all "natural tuning", and Akira shredds (tapping, legato, harmonics, etc.). I spoke to alot of my friends who bought this album (also been a fan since early 80s)and they all liked it despite styles/sounds are very different from their good old days... hope this helps.
