The Thomas Crown Affair is a caper story with a new (well, retread) twist: Pierce Brosnan plays a guy who can afford virtually anything, so he attempts to get something he can't, a Monet. It's a movie fitting of a polished, well-produced soundtrack, which is exactly what this disc delivers. Sting's previously unreleased version of the famous theme song "Windmills of Your Mind" lacks the suave psychedelic flair of Noel Harrison's original version (he won an Oscar for the song on the original Thomas Crown soundtrack), but should please his fans. Nina Simone's classic "Sinnerman" is a welcome contribution, and Wasis Diop's "Caban La Ka Kratchie" is a steamy world fusion tune. Bill Conti's score--varying from pulsating piano compositions to smooth jazz--rounds out the rest of this short soundtrack. For most, the real attraction here is the Sting cut. --Jason Verlinde

The Sinnerman or the whole affair?.......2007-05-20
I wanted to get The Thomas Crown Affair Soundtrack for one reason only: The Sinnerman by Nina Simone, because I was not able to find this particular version anywhere else. And yet this song...it is simply great. When I first heard it, I could feel shivers down my spine, and have felt the same ever since. But to be completely honest, I do like the rest of the CD. Unfortunately, there is not much left. The soundtrack is rather short (31' approximately), and...well...jazzy, which is not exactly my cup of tea, but still, it was worth getting it. It is a nice, relaxing listening. Apart from The Sinnerman, of course. That one makes me feel exhilirated and strong and...well, happy.
Excellent CD representing most of the movie's music.......2007-03-11
This is a great CD containing most of the melodies and songs from the movie except for the Latin dance during the black and white party. I especially enjoyed Sting's Windmills Of Your Mind which is not released on any other CD (I believe) and Nina Simone's "clapping" song. One of the rare soundtracks that has all great songs and melodies in one!
Thomas Crown Affair Soundtract.......2007-01-20
The CD was brand new, and I love the songs, it came in the mail extremley fast, even though it was a week before Christmas.
Just as Smooth as the Movie.......2006-09-25
This is a fantastic score and I highly recommend it. While Sting does not do the best ever recording of "Windmills of Your Mind," it's still very good, relaxing, and sets up the rest of the CD well.
Simone's "Sinnerman" is either something you do or do not like. Personally the vocals get to be repetitive and irritating after a while, but the piano and hand-clapping are definitely something to be heard, especially since they bring back the enjoyed memory of Brosnan and the other men clad in their "business suits and bowler cap" shuffle game for the film's final climax. I tend to skip the vocals, but still listen to the track.
"Everything is Never Quite Enough" is one of my favorite songs on this CD, even though there are so many different languages in the lyrics. The sounds and beat are incredible, stirring all the right emotions, while the lyrics are sultry and perfectly placed together. As said before, there are different languages sung in the song (the woman sings English, but the male sings French, his native African dialect, and some various others), but they all compliment each other and it is not at all annoying. It is excellent.
"Kaban a la Kratchie" is another track that you like or you don't...it depends on one's mood. Overall it is enjoyable and nostalgic of the Caribbean and the stunning photography of the scenes filmed in the tropics, but you need to be in a light-hearted mood and "enjoying the day" attitude to fully appreciate the song.
The rest of the songs are all Bill Conti's music and his score - no lyrics. The basic theme is reheard in the music, but the pace and background instruments are certainly different so you can listen to the entire CD without getting bored and can feel your pulse quicken with the music. The score certainly brings back the movie and the entire attitude of sophistication, intelligence, and smoothness. A great CD to listen to while driving, working, reading, basic background music, or for just plain listening to.
I highly recommend it and you will most certainly not have any buyer's remorse.
Thomas Crown Affair music from the movie.......2006-09-05
I found the music very uplifting and fun to listen to and it reminds me of the movie. I can listen during exercise and get my heart going for the day. The artists on the CD are great and I have searched for more CD's related.Sinnerman is one of my favorite songs/soundtrack.

A Beautiful Re-Creation of Over-Exposed Legrand Material.......2006-02-10
Michel Legrand is one the biggest artists of music entertainment, a sensitive composer and arranger.
Here you'll find a correct selection of Legrand's material with unnecessarily new arrangements though with an impeccable performance.
Many of the songs in the repertoire are still available in CDs you can find here @Amazon and the best Legrand is the original Legrand.
This album stands only for those who doesn't care about original takes and wishes just for a selection of the best Legrand.
"one of the greatest film composers of the 20th Century ~ Michel Legrand".......2005-10-26
Silva Screen has released a collection that will set you on your ear "The Essential Michel Legrand Film Music Collection"...Legrand's score sets the tone and mood you experience a sense of power and freedom, so exhilarating...Legrand's genius in composition and orchestration, puts the listener smack dab in the middle of each film he scores as it serves up a generous helping of heaven for all "film-score-buff" collectors
Michel Legrand was born in Paris on February 24th, 1932...attended the Paris Conservatory Progressing...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s with "THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG" (1964)..."THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR" (1968)..."THE GO-BETWEEN" (1970)..."SUMMER OF '42" (1971)..."THE THREE MUSKETEERS" (1973)...and three Oscars from the Academy Awards for "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" for best music and original song in 1969 , "SUMMER OF '42" for best original song and original dramatic score in 1972... "YENTL for best music and original song score in 1984...then in 2003 nominated for Broadway's Tony Awards for Best Original Music Score for the Musical "Amour", there's no letting up for this hard working composer.
The Flemish Radio Orchestra featuring conductor composer Michel Legrand on piano and harpsichord, Philippe Chayeb on bass, Thierry Chauvet on drums and Bruno Caviglia on guitar...all in all did a magnificent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for a multitude of films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which is long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand.
This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Legrand's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is Reynold da Silva [executive producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

Contemporary 60s yet Contemplative and Important.......2004-07-25
The THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR soundtrack was another great CD release from Ryko and many thanks go to them for issuing that wonderful compact disc. The THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR soundtrack is available once again on Varese Records. This score composed by Michel Legrand is the epitome of that sophisticated and ultra cool era of the 1960's. It was an era stylized by high fashion and chic aplomb that was quickly coming to an end, giving way to a grittier vision of our base inquisitiveness as general filmgoers. Michel Legrand's approach to film scoring was perfectly matched to this brief and fleeting time of that dying era of the chic and urbane 1960's. The film however, has as much substance as it does style. Closing your eyes, the main title song The Windmills of your Mind sung by Noel Harrison brings many images to mind. It is a beautiful song on its own, yet it reflects the inner struggle of Steve McQueen's character of a man who has everything yet still needs high-stake risks and excitement just to survive and make some meaning out of his life. His pastime full of transgressions will ultimately remain insatiable and will never relief his boredom. Michel Legrand's music perfectly underscores the tale of this man in a rather overt style. The music, which is gaudy and hip actually demonstrates the banality of McQueen's world. A good example of this is the way Legrand scores track 4: The Chess Game that McQueen plays or toys with Faye Dunaway. In retrospect this is a great soundtrack. It is not Herrmann, Bernstein, Newman or many other composers that are too numerous to mention. It is Legrand and makes this modern film a classic as much as any of the contributions from the other filmmakers.
One of cinema's milestone scores.............2004-06-07
Anybody who owns the Ryko version of this OST will gain nothing from acquiring this re-issue of Michel Legrand's fabulous score to one of Steve McQueen's coolest movies. If you don't own the Ryko version, you'll still be rewarded by getting this worthwhile re-issue. If the movie was a triumph of style over substance, that can hardly be said of this truly original and breathtaking score. Opening with the Oscar nominated 'Windmills of Your Mind' from a young Noel Harrison , the score takes us on a journey that swings from moody romantic tension to full blown caper, as Steve McQueen slips his way through the traps set by elegant and sexy Faye Dunaway.
Michel Legrand's remarkable work embraces his jazz upbringing, providing the perfect catalyst for this ultra cool blend of couture crime and doomed attraction shared by the leading characters. Legrand's own vocal interpretation of the beautiful 'His Eyes, Her Eyes' has to be about as good as it gets. The other jazz cues fare just as well away from the split screen frames that characterised Norman Jewison's memorable film. 'The Thomas Crown Affair'is one of the sublime M.Legrand's musical milestones, in partnership with the most stylish of 1960's American filmmaking.

Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended.......2002-08-20
This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

One of the tricks in utilizing a contemporary form like jazz in scoring a film is to avoid the idiom's passing fads and clichés, which have severely dated many lesser projects. Paris-born composer Michel Legrand was classically trained in Europe and worked as an arranger and film scorer there, but also had the good fortune to work with jazz greats such as John Coltrane and Miles Davis in America.
This background helped elevate his "symphonic jazz" score to director Norman Jewison's romantic caper The Thomas Crown Affair beyond the excesses of much late '60s "contemporary" film music--with the exception of Noel Harrison's Rod McKuenesque rendering "The Windmills of Your Mind." Harrison may have gotten the Oscar for it, but Dusty Springfield made the song a classic.
One minor fault: Ryko's generous interspersing of film dialogue between the cuts of its reissues occasionally distracts from Legrand's symphonic intent, but these cuts can easily be programmed out. --Jerry McCulley

A Classic.......2005-05-22
Putting Michel LeGrand together with phenomenal lyrics by Marilyn and Alan Bergman creates an unfogettable soundtrack. I have been playing this soundtrack on one media form or another for years. The clever instrumentation and lush orchestrations make it all the better.
For me, this soundtrack helped make the original movie so incredibly entertaining. LeGrand helps to make Faye Dunaway even more beautiful and enhanced McQueen's unreachable detachment.
One of my all time favorite CD's
See the movie after you have listened to the music.
Contemporary yet Contemplative Score.......2002-01-27
This is a great late 1960's score from composer Michel Legrand. The main title song "The Windmills of your Mind" sung by Noel Harrison and composed by Michel Legrand and Hal David is a classic. Closing your eyes it brings many images to mind. It is a beautiful song on its own yet still reflects the inner struggle of McQueen a man who has everything yet needs danger and excitement just to survive and make some meaning out of his life. His pastime full of transgressions will ultimately remain insatiable and will never relief his boredom. Michel Legrand's music perfectly underscores the tale of this man in a rather overt style. The music which is gaudy and "in" actually demonstrates the banality of McQueen's world. A good example of this is the way Legrand scores track 7: "The Chess Game" that McQueen plays or toys with Faye Dunaway. This is another great soundtrack album CD from Ryko.
The sublime Monsieur Legrand at his very best!.......2000-08-25
It's incredible to think that a whole generation of moviegoers think that 'Windmills Of Your Mind' was written for Sting's contribution to the 1999 hit remake of 'Thomas Crown'. Some 32 years earlier the young Noel Harrison was whispering his way through this captivating melody, with lyrics from the incomparable Alan & Marilyn Bergman, as Steve McQueen slipped his way through the traps set by the elegant and sexy Faye Dunaway. Michel Legrand's remarkable score embraces his jazz upbringing, providing the perfect catalyst for an ultra cool blend of high romance and 60's 'caper' action. As love songs go, Michel Legrand's own vocal interpretation of the beautiful 'His Eyes, Her Eyes' also has to be about as good as it gets. The other jazz cues fare just as well away from the split screen frames that characterised Norman Jewison's memorable film. 'The Thomas Crown Affair'is one of the sublime M.Legrand's musical milestones, in partnership with the best of 1960's American filmmaking.
However good the remake, the original retains it's sparkle........2000-04-20
Comparing the soundtrack of the remake to this the original is like comparing the two films. They are both good for different reasons. This soundtrack stands as interesting on it's own, without the film. It has two main theme's... (the two feature songs "Windmills of your mind" and "His Eyes, Her Eyes" and these are used in the composer's exploration of the jazz idiom. While I say that it stands on it's own as interesting..... it won't appeal to everyone, but whatever you do make sure you see the film! It's one you can't miss :-)
Older is Better.......2000-04-07
To anyone who saw the recent attempt to re-write the script and music to this classic, is like trying to re-write Bach for the Moog. It will have little staying power. The LeGrand score is beyond wonderful, and the music is as steamy as the original scenes! You ain't seen or heard nothing til you've heard THIS one!
