In the mid to late '70s, director Francis Ford Coppola put his career on the line to complete Apocalypse Now, his quixotic attempt to variously document, deconstruct, and mythologize America's military involvement in Vietnam. The end result was a troubling masterpiece and technical tour de force whose use of sound and music influenced films for decades. As originally released, the soundtrack album was equally groundbreaking: an intriguing, dreamlike collage of dialogue, sound effects, and music that both evoked the film's artistic sensibility and underscored the innovative, Academy Award®-winning efforts of sound designer Walter Murch.

Two decades later, Coppola revisited the project, adding nearly an hour of previously unseen footage and revamping its soundtrack release as well. But while the film may have taken on fresh new dimensions, the new soundtrack album seems stripped of virtually all of Murch's key contributions. What remains is primarily music--and a telling argument for the notion that the whole is considerably more than the sum of its parts. Inspired by synthesist Isao Tomita's '70s classical adaptations, Coppola hired father Carmine to write an orchestra score, and then set about synthesizing it. The Doors' "The End" remains an iconic touchstone, but removed from the context of the film (and its original album release), much of the Coppola music all too clearly reveals its inspirations (Tomita, Holst, Wagner, Stravinsky) and the technical limitations of the relatively primitive synth technology involved (mirrored in a pair of newly recorded tracks as well). --Jerry McCulley

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

5 out of 5 stars One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

Movie composer Elmer Bernstein (The Magnificent Seven) wrote his only Broadway score, How Now, Dow Jones, in 1967 in collaboration with the brilliant lyricist Carolyn Leigh, director George Abbott, producer David Merrick, and choreographer Gillian Lynne. The show about two people (Anthony Roberts, who by 1972's Sugar was known as Tony, and Marlyn Mason) attempting a romance while working on Wall Street only lasted 220 performances, but did produce a lively toe-tapper, "Step to the Rear," that saw some life past the show. Brassy Brenda Vaccaro plays Mason's friend Kate, Hiram Sherman won a Tony as a Wall Street whiz, and a young Tommy Tune plays a waiter in only his third Broadway appearance. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars How now great score.......2005-10-29

Don't believe the nay-sayers about this score. Indeed the script and idea were poor but this is the only existing Broadway score by the talented Elmer Bernstein and one of the few sets of lyrics by Carolyn Leigh. "How Now Dow Jones" falls somewhere between "How to Succeed" and "Promises, Promises." Neither of these shows have an outstanding score, but then how do you write musical comedy for the office set? And Carolyn Leigh was a superb lyricist. She worked with Cy Coleman on "Little Me" and should have worked with him on "Sweet Charity," because the latter show's score is another dreg up of hip 1960's New York and Broadway. What Elmer Bernstein brought to "How Now Dow Jones" was savvy and class. Here are some of the best songs for theatre written in that period. "Walk Away" is a luscious ballad and "He's Here" is a great comedy song. For a show stopper there's "Step To the Rear" and the chorale-like "Richer is Better." In fact, there are lots of fugal choral composition, two good duets for the leads "Live a Little" and "Touch and Go." They both are cock-eyed love duets of the late 60's. The theatre was about to experience a great upheaval with rock and the experimentation of Sondheim and Prince, and Bernstein and Leigh were really reaching for something new, something rather neo-classical on the Broadway stage.

1 out of 5 stars Little to enjoy.......2004-02-07

HOW NOW DOW JONES was a flop when it played Broadway and with good reason: Every element is decidedly second rate. Apart from the catchy "Step to the Rear" there is little to enjoy in this score. RCA Victor deserves top marks for trying to get every single original cast album out on CD... but instead of this turkey we would have preferred HAZEL FLAGG or SAY DARLING or NEW FACES OF 1952 / 1956.

2 out of 5 stars We need more B-shows.......2000-11-26

Look folks..this is a long dead item called the B-Show....Subways Are For Sleeping.....Skyscraper....Walking Happy.....I will think of more as I go on......

There was a time when B'way didn't deliver Dolly...Mame..La Mancha...Cabaret....Chorus Line....Les Miz..Phantom...Lion King...techno-trash TV star remakes of Grease......everytime at the plate...

B'way actually accomodated average shows.....OK shows...good, except for xyz.....shows....

That ain't the case now....

Dow Jones is not trash....it is slick...and totally unaudacious...if that word exists.....and it is clear that Abbott just ordered the troops to get in line...and deliver the mail.... some lovely tunes..Walk Away....some predictable rousers....Step to The Rear...some good comic lyircs by C.Leigh...some nice work by Elmer Bernstein....(but listen to his score for The Great Escape...so fine...but I am the kid of a WW II vet..and grew up on those films)...

I have seen the show done...by Tony Randall as Tony Roberts...it did not clarify the tale for me...and the book is a cut and paste affair....

BUT.....we don't have the luxury of seeing B'way just be B'way...as it was ...for so many years....until the 80s...so listen to the average out-put of highly accomplished folks...and enjoy what you can....it ain't awful...it is just...a B-show...enjoy an arcane item...you won't find it anywhere on B'way now....just completely guaranteeed crap...not average crap....enjoy it..it is gone now...if you want to argue...email me at: justact@earthlink.net....best, Michael Rothhaar

PS....If you want to learn about B'way as it was...then..during this time....read The Season ..by William Goldman...such a fine book

3 out of 5 stars Dismissable Show, But Lyrics Not to be Missed.......2000-05-29

This silly, frivolous show will never rank as more than mediocre, but don't miss some choice lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, one of only a few women to write Broadway musicals ("Wildcat" and "Little Me" were her other contributions, and she memorably wrote pop songs "Witchcraft," "The Best is Yet to Come" and "You Fascinate Me So" with Cy Coleman). She is frisky, smart and alert in "How Now" and recalls Lorenz Hart and Yip Harburg with her wordplay and her penchant for bending the language. When city women yearn for brutish men of yore instead of stock brokers in "They Don't Make 'Em Like That Anymore," they sing: "Where's my Henry? Where's Atilla? Where's that trusty ol' lusty gorilla? Where's that lovely Greek god among civilized men who'd come on now and then like Godzilla?" If Broadway lyricists interest you, this is a tiny treasure.

2 out of 5 stars Hilarious bit of camp history.......2000-04-16

This is probably one of the stupidist shows ever conceived. The plot - well, I won't even bother explaining it, its just too ridiculous. Suffice to say, it's about the stock market; anything else I say will create premature prejudice. The score swings wildly from very good to embarassingly bad; the opening "A-B-C", the duet "Live a little," and especially the ballad "Walk Away" are quite strong (Walk Away is actually a great song,) and "Step to the Rear" is a dopey but catchy number. Brenda Vaccaro forces "they dont make them like that" and "He's here" into fun songs. Everything else is just bad . . . and not like cheesy or campy bad, just bad. Vaccaro is highly amusing, and Marlyn Mason is quite good, but Tony (i mean, Anthony) Roberts is remarkably bland and dour. All in all, this album is only worth buying if you are interested in kitschy 60's relics that depended on brand name products and celebrity name dropping to fill in for jokes and actual plot points. Oh, and the cover art is pretty cool.

4 out of 5 stars Sammy Davis Jr. is awesome.......2007-01-10

I have been converting my old LP's into CD's then putting them on my Ipod. I am picky about what I put on my Ipod, selecting only certain tracks from each CD. This CD, however, I put all tracks onto my Ipod except the overture. While I find Shirley MacLaine's voice a bit weak, the songs overcome any such problems with their energy. And one of the main reasons I wanted the movie rather than broadway CD was because of Sammy Davis Jr. His contributions to this album are worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Great Memories (better than current 2005 Broadway Revival).......2005-08-06

I saw the movie version for the first time a couple of years ago and continue with fond memories. I saw the 2005 Broadway Revival in June. Trust me, stick with the movie cast recording. Paula Kelly, Chita Rivera, and even Shirley MacLaine have a magic and zeal that is lost in the current revival. My main disappointment is that the movie soundtrack's version of The Rich Man's Frug is too short and doesn't have the best parts of the full number from the movie. That aside, who could ever top Sammy Davis' performance in Rythm of Life. Chita and Paula are beyond comparison in Something Better Than This.

This cast recording makes me wish I was old enough to have seen them during the original Broadway run.

Consider buying the DVD to the movie to accompany this DVD. That way, you'll also get to see Ben Vereen at his best. I will warn you that the movie was a bit indulgent with extended scenes whose length is not justified by their contribution to the overall film. It's about 20-30 minutes too long. But the musical and dance numbers are really great. Who doesn't love Fosse?

4 out of 5 stars long-overdue reissue of the classic soundtrack.......2003-10-09

SWEET CHARITY was turned into a not-so-successful film in 1969, starring Shirley MacLaine. Originally appearing on Broadway in 1966 starring Gwen Verdon, the musical is based on the classic Fellini film "Nights of Cabiria".

The score was heavily revised for the move to celluloid. "You Should See Yourself" was replaced by "My Personal Property", "I'm the Bravest Individual" was replaced by "It's a Nice Face". The melody for "Sweet Charity" was re-jigged for a more uptempo feel. Songs cut from the score altogether included "Baby Dream Your Dream", "Too Many Tomorrows" and "Charity's Soliloquy".

Shirley MacLaine was joined by a cast including veteran Broadway talents Paula Kelly and Chita Rivera, John McMartin (recreating the role he originated on Broadway opposite Gwen Verdon) as Oscar Linquist, Sammy Davis Jr. as Daddy Brubeck, Stubby Kaye as Herman and Ricardo Montalban.

Shirley MacLaine sings her numbers with her sweet pixie-esque voice, gliding through showstoppers like "I'm a Brass Band" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now" with great ease.

Another fantastic package from Decca Broadway. Peter Filichia, as always, offers comprehensive liner notes, and sound quality is quite good. In addition to this CD I also recommend the still-superb 1966 original Broadway cast album with Gwen Verdon.

3 out of 5 stars Sweet Charity.......2003-09-14

I've been waiting for this version of Sweet Charity to come out for years. My parents use to listen to the Decca LP many years ago and the tunes grew on me. From hey Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now, I'm A Brass Band, etc, etc Great music all around with not one bad track. Before this version I had brought the Broadway Show versions and to me they were all kind of flat. Maybe because I grew up on the film version I couldn't appreciate the show versions as much. The vocals and the scoring are great. Shirley MacClaine doesn't have the greatest voice in the world but she's still great.
My biggest complaint about this CD release is that it is not complete. You think that Decca Records would do a complete Cd release as previous musical soundtracks have done. This is a direct copy of the Lp released so many years ago. There is so much more music in this film that I was disapointed when I found it it was only a Cd of the original album. With Cd's fitting up the 80 minutes of music it is very surprising that this truncated version was released. Maybe because it's not considered a classic. This is am underrated film as far as I am concerned and in my opinion a far better score than Chicago (with all due respect to Bob Fosse who directed this film) This would be a great CD if only it wasn't abbreviated.

Though it's based on the 1978 X-rated movie of the same name, Debbie Does Dallas may be one of the most wholesome pieces of entertainment to ever hit Off Broadway. Played by Sherie Rene Scott (Aida), the title character has to do unsavory things in order to raise money and travel to Dallas, where she'll fulfill her destiny as a Texas Cowgirl cheerleader. But as "Where I Need to Go (Debbie's Theme)" makes clear (it's influenced by "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic), this musical actually fits comfortably in the mainstream, emphasizing such classic American values as following your dream and using a bloated ballad to get there. But "Where I Need to Go" is one of only a few songs on this cast recording. The CD is more akin to a book on tape, relying heavily on the play's dialogues to fill the track listing. It might be fun to listen to it on a long cross-country drive, but in the comfort of your home, the appeal fades somewhat. If you're looking for songs that explore the world of adult entertainment, the soundtrack to Bruce Kimmel's 1976 movie, The First Nudie Musical, remains the one to top. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I am looking for the sheet music for debbie does dallas, does anybody know where i can find it?

5 out of 5 stars This is utterly Precious!.......2003-05-25

I bought this because I enjoy Sherie Renee Scott's performances in "Aida" and "The Last Five Years." This is one of the funniest recordings I've heard. Don't be mislead, I think this could hardly be considered a musical, aside from the few songs that are actually sung, I would think of it more as a play with music - and the occasional sung song. This is part of the charm, however. The cliche cheerleaders and football players are hillarious to listen to. Be advised, it is based on a porn movie, so there is a lot of things that could make it uncomfortable to listen to in mixed company, but it's humor and naive charm, make it worth while.

3 out of 5 stars Not many songs but still funny........2003-03-23

Majority of the songs have no actual substance, but besides the few gorgeous melodies Sherie Rene Scott sings with such oomph, this cd is jampacked with dirty jokes and nothing but. ...

5 out of 5 stars A Rolling Ride - Tongue in Cheek - Visual INTENDED!!!.......2003-01-30

This recording is fantastic. I've a collection of over 300 Theatre Cast Albums. And this, by far, is very original. Definitly not something for children, while not explicit, the references to sexual acts are pretty thinly veiled.
There are a total of maybe 4 actual songs on here. But, the spoken word is fantastic, and the visuals you create with your mind are even more amusing.
The girls, which are totally believable as a group of not too bright, but sexually charges adolescents speak in a group voice, with a Valley accent, that's just too funny. You can't help but laugh.
And the men, which are never the focus in the type of movie this is based on, come through as unimportant bystanders that just help to move the action along, but still show some small glimmers of personality that make you laugh at the genre of adult movies.
All in all, this CD is a humurous romp through the sexual discovery of an 18 year old girl pursuing her dreams. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys hearing something new, different, and that will certainly make you SMILE, if not LAUGH OUT LOUD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very Funny and totally original.......2003-01-16

I saw the show and loved it but I couldn't imagine how they were going to turn it into a CD because there isn't enough music to make a full CD. So what they did was to create a very very funny comedy album full of scenes, songs, sex and karaoke (if you can believe it) The CD is 74 minutes and is a complete listening experience. There is also a surprise bonus track called The orgasm medley that has to be heard to be believed. It is hilarious. The songs are better on the CD than in the show. They have a South Park feel to them and they are very funny. Sherie Rene Scott has one of my favorite voices anywhere and she gets the opportunity to show off all she can do and she does it great. I would reccomend anyone getting this CD if you want to giggle and blush and have a really great time. Oh, and the artwork has a centerfold of Sherie as Debbie it is worth the price of the CD (if you know what I mean)

This show is a blast! It's a very funny story about some comics trying to make it in the big leagues. The music is so entertaining and the guys are hilarious. If you like comedy, you'll love Three Guys.

    3 out of 5 stars I Didn't Not Like It.......2007-01-16

This Musical is pretty good. I didn't hate the lyrics, singers, or orchestrations, but the CD as a whole wasn't the most impressive thing I've ever listened to. I got bored and there wasn't anything that snapped me from the boredom and that's never good. I think the themes in this show are great, anti-war, pro-independence; and the characters and lyrics do a great job of bringing that out. But if you hunting for a musical that will make you want to listen to it over and over... this isn't it. I would probably only suggest this CD for collectors, and fans of early musicals. Favorite Song: "A Star on the Monument"

5 out of 5 stars A glorious musical comedy score!.......2003-10-25

Presented in 1967 at the Theatre de Lys, NOW IS THE TIME FOR ALL GOOD MEN was an anti-war musical very much of its time. There were many "anti-war" musicals in the late 60s and early 70s and invariably featured a rock score that was not inherently theatrical. But this score, written by two women in their early 30s, had a glorious musical comedy score with songs good enough to be standards. None other than Barbra Streisand recorded "He Could Show Me" as a single (but it was curiously never included on any of her albums). Other A+ ballads are the lush and romantic "Rain Your Love on Me," and "All Alone." "My Holiday" is a gorgeous Christmas song. There are some funny satirical numbers like "Keep `Em Busy, Keep `Em Quiet" (which is sung by a high school principal as advice to the new teachers) and "A Star on the Monument" (sung by a pro-War father as he tells how proud he would be of a son who died a hero). The show's story centers on a young teacher, David Cryer (Gretchen's then-husband) and his attempts to expand the intellectual horizons of the inhabitants of a small town in Indiana. The townspeople like him, but wish he wouldn't say such controversial things. Mr. Cryer has a glorious voice and shines on the aforementioned two big ballads as well as "What's in the Air" and "See Everything New." (He later starred in several Broadway shows and TV soap operas.) Ingenue Anne Kaye has a sprightly clear soprano and scores on "Down Through History." I also enjoy Judy Frank as a white trash seductress on "Stuck Up." As a result of having to step into the role a week before opening when the original actress landed a lucrative TV job in Hollywood, author/lyricist Gretchen Cryer (under the pseudonym "Sally Niven") sings the female lead. She's delightful. Ms. Cryer was fighting the flu when this album was recorded and she sounds a little adenoidal in places, but on the whole she sings quite well. Ms. Cryer and her composer partner Nancy Ford two seasons later wrote the off-Broadway smash THE LAST SWEET DAYS OF ISAAC and two years later became the first female composer-lyricist team to have a show produced on Broadway with SHELTER. A few years later, they hit paydirt with the long-running I'M GETTING MY ACT TOGETHER AND I'M TAKING IT ON THE ROAD. I love all the Cryer-Ford scores, but this one will always be my favorite. I was crazy about this show and saw it several times during its 6-month run. I have virtually worn out my vinyl copy. This is a wonderful score and it's great to have it on CD. In my opinion, it's a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection of show tunes ........1998-12-06

Lost in Boston II is the second group of songs that have been put on an album that were cut from well known musicals. It is better than the first Lost in Boston- only because the songs collected here have nary a loser(okay,"It Was Always You" from Applause sounds like a theme from a 70's Tv show- but it's still tuneful and endearing). Some listeners may be familair with some of these songs from the Ben Bagley compilations, but for me many were complete revelations. For example, I had heard only negative things about the score to Grand Hotel- then I played the showstopper cut from the show called" Flaemmchen the Flame Girl" - and I now would like to hear what was not cut! The same applies to the team of Jones and Schmidt. When I heard the gorgeous song, "Thousands of Flowers" I immediately went to buy the final score of "I Do I Do"... The first two Lost in Bostons confirmed how underrated this song team truly is. The liner notes are informative and to the point but as with all good stuff, they leave you wanting more.Don't miss this CD. It is better than many complete Broadway musical scores!
