Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

2 out of 5 stars A lot of 70's Music.......2005-09-20

If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.

5 out of 5 stars Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

5 out of 5 stars Varèse Sarabande à son meilleur!.......2003-04-17

5 out of 5 stars A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09

This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".

5 out of 5 stars A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06

Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).

5 out of 5 stars "the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06

The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.

For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.

This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.

A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

Finally, Film Score Monthly did what no one else could do: release one of John Barry's most brilliant scores, one that won him not one but two Oscars. If you like this score or Barry, snatch this up fast as it's a limited edition!

I must point out that the track listing on Amazon includes the actual 12 tracks that appear on the CD, but include five more that are definietely NOT on the CD (they're from a rerecording on Varese Sarabande). So, is what's being sold the actual Film Score Monthly release or a bootleg that includes the extra tracks? You should check that out before making your purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Born Free.......2006-02-23

Perhaps one of John Barry's best known compositions, Born Free soundtrack best describes the movie and its setting in Africa very well. The music is very moving, and evokes all emotions from the playful to the tearful. I was pleased to find this original recording on CD after years of searching. The recording quality is very good and surpasses the LP.

    2 out of 5 stars "Original" Score?.......2004-03-19

What a disappointment, receiving my eagerly awaited Born Free "Original Score" and seeing the 1999 re-recording date on the back - and indeed, this is a rather passionless, soulless thing. Musicians simply going through the motions. And no Matt Munro! Somebody deserves a punch in the mouth for this.

    2 out of 5 stars A distant 2nd to the original.......2001-08-10

This re-recording of John Barry's original score from the movie Born Free falls well short of the original soundtrack. Its been many years since I last heard the original on LP but one thing became clear after listening to this newest effort. The re-recording comes across as being bland and sterile compared to the original and the choice of drums used as an accompaniment in some of the songs just doesn't work at all while in the original the drums blended perfectly with the orchestra as well as the culture. On the good side the new version does include some additional material not in the original. Overall this re-recording is a mildly enjoyable album despite its failings but hopefully someone in the powers that be will remaster the original soundtrack which I consider to be the very best work of John Barry not to mention among the finest movie soundtracks past or present.

4 out of 5 stars Not the original soundtrack!.......2001-05-09

My earlier review neglected to note that this is not the original soundtrack but a rerecording of the music from the movie. The original score is breathtaking and the rerecording faithful, but there is something missing from the rerecording, and that is more than the Matt Monroe vocal. I still await reissue of the original soundtrack.

    3 out of 5 stars It'll have to do........2000-08-19

Imagine you own the rights to one of the best selling soundtracks in history, recipient of not just one, but two Oscars for the music, and you have YET to release it on CD (no names, but the initials are CAPITOL RECORDS). This new recording at least rates for being there on the shelves. It also presents music not on the original LP (but leaves off one of the best action pieces where Elsa chases the Hog). Barry is a meticulous producer and uses close-micing to make solo instruments stand out. I believe a Decca mic arrangement was used on this new recording, which gives an overall lush sound, but also one that can be muddy. Thus, some string passages are too quiet while some brass fanfares are unequally loud! And yes, the conducting tempos get sluggish here and there, especially toward the end. And that tentative percussion playing on the skins, not good.

This is music which is far more elaborate than you might be used to, when Barry didn't mind writing tons of music even though much of it wouldn't be used or would be sliced and diced beyond recognition. And I don't recommend you don't get it, but it's primarily because this is all there is. Not bad. But not as good as the original.

1 out of 5 stars NOT the original recording, and disappointingly dull........2000-06-02

This is not the original soundtrack recording from the movie Born Free. It is a new recording of John Barry's music, by Frederic Talgorn conducting the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Unfortunately, none of the exhuberance of the original soundtrack performances make it into Mr. Talgorn's conducting. In the main title, the drums are subdued and the final statement of the main motif (BORN FREE!) just sort of lolls out the speakers, nothing like the stirring rendition in the movie. "Elsa at Play" sounds more like sleepy elephants at play. And "Reunion/Born Free (end title) utterly failed to bring tears to my eyes--there is no tension, no resolution, it's just another lazy afternoon in the sun. I really can't imagine ever playing this CD again.

5 out of 5 stars Endearing Collection from John Barry's Early Films.......2006-09-28

This is a very good collection of John Barry's film music from the 1960's. Besides the various James Bond film themes, impressive selections such as THE IPCRESS FILE, KING RAT and THE CHASE are included. "Wednesday's Child" from the QUILLER MEMORANDUM is very good. There is not a bad cut in the bunch.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC BY A GREAT COMPOSER.......2003-11-10

IF THIS CD ONLY HAD "WE HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD", IT WOULD BE WORTH THE PRICE AND THEN SOME. I FIRST HEARD THIS ARRANGEMENT IN 1981 ON AN EASY LISTENING RADIO STATION IN CHICAGO AND FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. THERE ARE OTHER GOOD SONGS AS WELL ON THIS CD LIKE "FUN CITY", "WEDNESDAY'S CHILD", AND "NEXT TIME".

5 out of 5 stars INVENTIVENESS FOR ORCHESTRAL COLORS, INFLECTIONS, RHYTHMS.......1998-06-25

After searching my music collection for my very favorite albums, I tried to locate the same artists at [Amazon.Com]. I really liked "The Living Daylights" a 007 James Bond thriller produced by John Barry (Warner Brothers 1987). Has anyone heard of John Barry? Evidently he is a quiet and secluded man but he has composed music for quite a few box office film hits, some in the James Bond series. All the tracks on this album are good but I especially liked Thunderball (Track 11) and Goldfinger (Track 17). John Barry is very versatile in his music style but several have that "suspense" feel and bold, base, brass leads. The insert describes his music as "inventiveness for orchestral colors and infectious rhythms; his gift for melody majestically sweeping or deceptively simple". I agree. You'll like this album - most likely all of the 17 tracks with 53 minutes of play.

5 out of 5 stars John Barry revisits his classic themes circa 1968.......1998-05-20

This collection is culled from John Barry's brief association with Columbia records in the sixties. Dull cover art betrays the fact that this is the best John Barry compilation for your money. "The James Bond Theme" has never sounded better, and Barry turns his rather stoic theme for "The Lion in Winter" into a intensive workout for jazz organ. Other hard to find anywhere else themes include "The Ipcress File," "The Quiller Memorandum," and "The Wrong Box." The sixties really did swing!
