Dirty Harry [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Flush with popular successes that spanned film (the Oscar nominated score for Cool Hand Luke Bullitt ) and TV (the Grammy-winning Mission: Impossible, Mannix) Argentine-born composer Lalo Schifrin infused director Don Siegel's original, epochal Dirty Harry with one of the 70's most riveting, consistently original jazz-fusion scores. It was also one that, until now, was only available in mono-mixed snippets on obscure compilations; this release marks the full-score's first, three-decade-overdue release (remixed in stereo for the first time and including alternate takes). The 1971 score folds Schifrin's classical training and years as jazzman into a context that's undeniably charged by the contemporary electric excursions (Bitches Brew, A Tribute to Jack Johnson, Live at the Fillmore East) of Miles Davis. Its cues for renegade San Francisco detective Harry Callahan are variously driven by restless, propulsive electric bass, a small string ensemble, East-Asian percussion and spare Fender Rhodes lines, a musical tack that would be revived a quarter-century later and hailed as "acid jazz." But in portraying the serial killer Scorpio, Schifrin fuses the anxiety of 20th century classical modernism with electric psych-rock, then overlays it with an eerie, wordless soprano that beats Morricone at his own game. Also included here are smatterings of Schifrin's various source music (mostly disposable jazz and r&b kitsch) that colored the film's various San Francisco diners and dives, a context that only underscores the stunning, electric cool of his dramatic cues. --Jerry McCulley

EASTWOOD IS ALSO A GREAT SONGWRITER.......2007-06-11
This is a "semi" career spanning CD (and the only decent one in existence) of the movie themes from some great Eastwood movies. The earlier pieces are from his days in TV and transition to movies. The more mature work with Lennie Niehaus displays Clint's artistry, no not only as an actor, award winning director, but great composer. My only complaint is the disc is missing the off-beat and totally original jazzy "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" from THE GAUNTLET.
The disc does contain his wonderful A PERFECT WORLD and THE UNFORGIVEN. Why Eastwood never won an Oscar for some of his original scores is a mystery to me. He is more celebrated as a director than as an actor only because he won more awards in that category and his acting style was known for it's low-keyed and reactionary style. But the Clint Eastwood the musician cannot be dismissed and here is that more than proves his versatility. A known jazz lover, for fans of that genre, give a listen to WHY SHOULD I CARE from "True Crime", another great Eastwood composition.
The remainder of the disc is a salute to Eastwood and his work with a heavy emphasis on the jazz.
First rate. I've been a fan since his directoral debut in PLAY MISTY FOR ME. Little did I realize what a great composer he would turn out to be.
A must for any fans as there are no single soundtacks available from his movies featuring his work.
Play Misty For Me.......2005-12-20
Nearly an hour and 20 minutes of "Music For the Movies of Clint Eastwood". What fan wouldn't be happy with this CD? 23 Tracks, and a great compilation. From the early TV days, the "Theme from Rawhide"(this was about the time I fell in love with Clint, I think I was about 8)performed by Frankie Lane, and Spaghetti Western, the "The, Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"(does anyone REALLY know the words to this one, and does it really matter?)to the romantic Doe Eyes"(the love theme from "Bridges of Madison County", the music will have you reliving the great moments from great films that just say Clint!
The first half of the album features both Clint's own works and the fabulous talented composers he has worked with. Ennio Moricone's oh so recognizable style("The Good, The Bad and the Ugly"), the moving music of Lennie Niehaus("Pale Rider"), the haunting sounds from Lalo Schfrin("Dirty Harry Theme", where you will relive Clint doing the, "Do you feel lucky punk?" speech), and some other wonderful musicians including the great Civil War and Western sounding "Theme from Outlaw Josey Wales", by Jerry Fielding, and Erroll Garner's"Play Misty For Me", a gorgeous piano rendition. Some of Clint's own works, included are "Claudia's Theme" from "Unforgiven" "Kate's Theme" from "Absolute Power", "Big Fran's Baby" from "A Perfect World", and of course the mesmerizing and above mentioned "Doe Eyes".
Second half is a 10 part instrumental suite, "Clint Eastwood, An American Filmmaker Suite". This is music composed and conducted by Lennie Niehaus for the PBS "American Masters" documentary " Eastwood: Out of the Shadows" The music tells Clint's story musically, and it flows beautifully and emotionally. It has a little of everyting, including some great jazzy numbers. The orchestration and the musicians capture the journey wonderfully. For list of all 23 track titles, see buying info. You can also listen to samples from there.
The quality of the CD is excellent. A pamphlet with some production notes, and the tracks is included. There are some great pix of Clint as well. It doesn't have ALL his films included. Hopefully the music form "Kelly's Heroes"("Burning Bridges) and "The Beguiled"(more from Lalo Schifrin) will make the sequel album!
Take it in your car and listen to it when you are stuck in traffic, and it will take you somewhere else for a while.Just say "Play Misty For Me" and hit track 8. Highly recommended for the Eastwood fan. And for those that can't get enough, I would also recommend the soundtrack to "Bridges of Madison County". One of the most romantic albums I ever heard.
"Head 'Em Up, Move 'Em On....Keep Them Doggies Rollin...Rawhide!"
Enjoy....Laurie
"Go ahead, make your day!".......2004-06-21
There's really not too much to say about this, except that any big fan of "Clint Eastwood", or at least the majority of these movies should like this. What I enjoy most are the tracks from his westerns, as they all set a nice mood, but the rest are very good as well. I can't help but think this would have been twice as good had it contained dialogue from each of these films too. Overall a great collection for the fan. After all, if there's one thing "Clint" knows about as much as his acting, it's his music.

Reexperiencing the movie through music.......2007-05-07
With every track of this cd it provides a mental image of that particular scene in the movie (for those of us who have a good memory). I highly recommend this cd for any Dirty Harry fan.
The real movie music........2005-08-29
This is the actual music from the Dirty Harry movie. I must admit that this means the album contains a lot of material that I now never listen to. Small incidental pieces that work in the context of the movie, but do not make good general listening material in my opinion.
Having said that, there are about six tracks that I absolutely love that make the purchase worthwhile for me. Expensive ? Yes, but you can't get this music any other way. I started learning the drums as a young teenager after falling in love with the main theme. I'm now 45 and still drumming.
Another odd little tip for parents with young kids. If you ever organize giant family games of "hide and seek" in the house, or run around snipeing each other with plastic toy guns, then this CD provides a great backdrop. Just programme in the half dozen really good tracks and set it on repeat. The tension and excitement in the music makes a boring old game quite exciting for the kids (and the parents).
The last score on my list of "holy grail" OST albums.......2005-03-14
Like many others of you out there, I've waited an absurdly long period of time for the complete OST album of Lalo Shifrin's Dirty Harry score to be reissued on CD. Collecting OST's can be exasperating because record labels tend to keep them in print for relatively short periods of time compared to other albums, and even classic scores can take years--or even decades--to be reissued. Over the past few years, I've watched the last few of my favorite "lost" scores to be reissued on CD--including Leonard Rosenman's Fantastic Voyage and Beneath the Planet of the Apes; and Komeda's Rosemary's Baby (although the latter is absurdly overpriced)--and, since Dirty Harry is one of my all-time favorites, I suppose it is fitting that is the last one to "fall" from my list.
I'm not going to pretend that Dirty Harry is "high art," but imo it is the best "cop flick" ever; and it has elements of a good psychological thriller to boot...then there's the atmospherically creepy night scenes, perfectly accented by Shifrin's eerie score.
It has been menioned by reviewers of this album, and the less-than-satisfactory Dirty Harry Anthology, that some of the best moments have been left off of previous albums bearing excerpts of this score: the crucial "Dawn Discovery" and End Title music have not previously appeared on CD, and the Main Title music only appeared as a "bleeding chunk" excerpt. This album is not missing any of the essential cues, and anyone who is a Dirty Harry buff, or just a movie score/OST album buff will find everything they've been waiting for right here.
Complete package here, folks..........2004-10-20
I've never written a review on here, but I had to say something about this Dirty Harry album... After searching for the complete soundtrack to this film and buying other albums that came up short, I was very pleased when I accidentally stumbled over this one. After listening to it, it's obvious to me that this is THE album to get. All the tracks sound like they've been remastered. the music and the vocals sound crisp and like they were recorded yesterday. Every song for every scene is in here... This isn't one to pass up!
Whatever happened to good score soundtrack music?.......2004-07-20
Acid jazz is the best way to describe Harry Callahan soundtrack music. The Enforcer and Magnum Force on CD would complete the package. This is the essential Dirty Harry music CD for your collection, but tracks 3,4 and 13 are not worth listening to. Hurry, turn that one down too!

dirty harry anthology.......2005-09-09
Lalo Schifrin is a top shelf composer.I have enjoyed his work since my teens. There is one song missing on this collection which was on the vinyl album. It's the closing theme to "Sudden Impact".It's called "THIS SIDE OF FOREVER"by a fabulous lady named Roberta Flack. No "Dirty Harry" theme collection would be complete without it.I'm a huge Clint Eastwood fan since his days on the western series "RAWHIDE".How would one find that song?Nonetheless, this album is a must have for any theme collection buff.Buy it!
CLUMSY BUTCHERY OF MAIN THEME.......2001-05-20
I bought this CD for one reason only -- the main "Dirty Harry" theme, titled "Dirty Harry's Creed" on this disc. I have the theme on an old vinyl collection of Warner Brothers film music titled "Soundtrack!" where the cue is simply named "Dirty Harry." I was thrilled to replace my scratchy old LP version with a pristine CD master. But -- STUPEFYINGLY -- 22 seconds of the original theme have been chopped out!!
What you're not hearing is a darkly taut piano solo that, for my money, gave this music a sophisticated emotional texture. Adding insult to injury, the edit is obvious and one of the most inept hatchet jobs I have ever heard on a professional record. Somebody's head should roll. Save your money until someone competent produces the correct UNABRIDGED version of the Dirty Harry theme.
must-have for Dirty Harry fans!!!!!!!.......2001-03-12
Lalo Schifrin's pulse thumping cues conjure the excitement of the 3 harry films featured on here.I hated THE DEAD POOL,so I'm happy it ain't here! This is timeless music to a great 3 movies!
Dirty Harry Anthology.......2001-02-13
A lot of thought has gone into producing a superb set of music. It really is a mixed bag of funk, rock and pure weirdness!
The music is technical, with thunderous bass lines, great guitar and drums. I think Dirty Harry has the best music, in particular Scorpio's music. Track 8 'Another Victim', brilliantly epitomises Scorpio's quest for carnage as he sets out to plunder the fruits of the bottle shop and its owner!
WORTH THE WAIT FOR 'HARRY' BUFFS.......2000-11-06
My brother and I have a c.d. buying policy-don't buy it until you know that there are at least 2 tracks you really like on it. This soundtrack compilation has more than enough to recommended it-and plenty of tracks to make it worth picking up. The selections from 'Dirty Harry' are reason enough for me-cool, 70's jazz-funk composed by a master film scorer. 'Magnum Force' comes in second place-good but not as good. The other selections merely pad out the disc as far as I'm concerned. If you love the first (and best) film in the series, and you love it's score, pick this up.

Dirty Harry anthology.......2002-12-08
As the title says soundtracks from three of the dirty harry films, the music tracks to the first 2 films is excellent bluesy jazzy sounds and a fuzz guitar sound and keyboards all featured and blended well.Sadly the third film soundtrack is the weakest so is the film what I can remember of it.Cd comes with a wealth of information and an interview with the composer the sound quality is excellent remastered well,I was pleasently surprised.
