4.75 stars........2005-02-16
Excellent album. The ochestrated version of FFVIII sure is good! All tracks have the ability to bring back memories from the game, yet you can listen them for their very own artistic qualities. The only problem is, one very important battle theme is missing.
The dramatic music used in both "Lapin Beach Landing" and "Galbadia Garden vs. Balamb Garden Aerial Battle" opening scenes should have been included in this album. With the exception of "Liberi Fatali" and "Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec" themes, this music was probably the most moving throughout the whole FFVIII game. It kicks your senses in high gear instantly and keeps you on the edge throughout the battle. Too bad it's not on this album. Otherwise I say go for it! This album is a must have for FFVIII fans. It's almost 5 stars but not yet...
Sorry if I made any language related or grammatical mistakes in this review. After all, I am a genuine French Canadian, so I don't have much opportunities to test my writing skills in foreign languages (foreign to me, that is).
OUT OF THIS WORLD! buy it!!!! NOW!!!!.......2005-01-05
When I first bought this CD, I honestly didn't expect much out of it at all! BOY was I in for a great surprise!!! This CD just blew me away - and actually reduced me to tears!!! the game FFVIII was to me, a game like no other and it is still my favourite game of all time. one of the reasons for this was because of the wonderful music that Nobuo Uematsu composed for it. Hearing the FFVIII OST brought me back to the wonderful things i'd experienced through that game. But hearing this CD brought back all of the emotions I'd felt while playng it, as I'd never imagined that I could have heard so many of my favourite tracks played so beautifully! Even "Fragments of Memories", a track from the OST that I had not really liked all that much, was amazing! It was beautiful! Every track on this has some new twist to it - like "The Man With The Machine Gun" which has been given a wonderful orchestrated feel to it; or "Fithos Lusec Vevos Venosec" which is so different from anything i have heard before, with its strangely beautiful melody and instruments!
Only 3 out of 13 tracks on this CD are taken directly from the OST - compared with only 3 out of 13 tracks on FFVII: Reunion Tracks NOT being taken from the OST!!!
I love every track on this CD and I'm sure that you will too! Whether you are a FF music fanatic, or just someone who likes FF music just do one thing - BUY THIS CD!!!
Absolutely wonderful!.......2003-12-30
Uematsu fans, brace yourself! You all have heard his in-game music, no doubt, but wait until you hear it taken to the real thing. I'm talking orchestrated, and slightly re arranged for playability. And, Uematsu fan or not, if you like any classical, you'll LOVE. It brings back memories from the games, and sets you in a mood only Uematsu can. It's inspired me in my own music and art, and hopefully it will help you, too. BUY!
Excellent orchestral arrangement.......2003-12-07
I'm a big fan of rearranged video game music, and this cd is one of my new favorites. Every song is played by a professional orchestra, and it just sounds excellent.
A few things worth mentioning. The first track, Liberi Fatali, is the music played in the opening movie to ff8. The melody hasn't changed(though the sound effects from the Squall/Seifer battle arent there), but somehow it just sounds clearer and sharper than what was in the original game. It's an excellent piece that doesnt need any rearrangement.
The next two tracks(Blue Fields, which is the overworld theme, and Dont Be Afraid, the basic battle theme), had pretty lackluster original melodies to begin with, but this arrangement manages to play them both pretty well. They aren't spectacular, but they are still a lot better than the originals.
Track 6, Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec, is also excellent, until you get to the last part of the song. This weird wailing female's voice comes in and I think it completely ruins what would have otherwise been one of the highlights of the cd. The first time I heard it, I thought someone had come up behind me and started making fun of the song. It's just so off-key and doesn't at all.
"The Man With the Machine Gun" is another excellent piece. It isn't a rocking battle theme like its original, but its still an upbeat, light-hearted piece that accurately reflects the original. Very well done.
"Eyes on Me" is the same as it was in the game. I was never a fan of lyrics in video game music, and even though I can agree that it is a pretty song, I just dont like lyrics(the chanting voices and the Fithos Lusec is ok with me though).
I think they could have taken out one of the slower songs and replaced it with a faster-paced piece, like the "Attack on Dollet" theme, but thats just me.
Every piece on this cd is orchestrated excellently. My college roomate, who is getting a minor in music, loves this cd(even though he never played any video games in his entire life). He points out to me all the "cool" parts of the music like how they do a "major 7th" chord or something like that :). A tad expensive, but its an excellent cd, enjoyable by both gamers and non-gamers.
Simply amazing........2003-06-02
As a connoisseur of both classical music and video game music, I can safely say that this disc is a masterpiece. Uematsu takes the score for Final Fantasy VIII, strong enough on its own, and works his characteristic magic. Emotion shines through his work, from the childlike wonder in Balamb Garden to the majesty of The Oath to the pure love in Eyes on Me. This CD is worth every cent.
