1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

3 out of 5 stars Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24

For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.

5 out of 5 stars We really enjoyed hearing all of the old movie themes.......2005-09-30

we put this CD in on a long road trip. We played a guessing game as to which one knew the movie. The music was excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Film Music.......2005-09-10

This is an outstanding collection of film music. The sound is qulity is very good. The selections cover a good range from various film genres and time periods. I like this CD.

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 1.......2005-08-22

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' interpretation of film scores on this first tribute to Hollywood is somewhat a mixed bag. A SUMMER PLACE was beautifully executed and true to the nature of this sensitive film that was made during a time of innocence. The BEN HUR, CAPTAIN BLOOD and OUT OF AFRICA selections were good. The interpretation of GOLDFINGER was a rather bizarre and blatantly bombastic exercise in overkill. This is a good CD for me because of the A SUMMER PLACE selection.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection of movie music.......2001-02-13

Erich Kunzel and The Cincinnati Pops never fail to disappoint. This is a rousing stirring collection of overtures and themes from some of Hollywood's biggest films. And what better piece to start off the album than the "20th Century Fox Fanfare". A lot, if not all, of these pieces will be familiar to movie lovers. Who can resist the beautiful "Love Theme from Romeo & Juliet" or the "Theme from Love Story". Then there's the heart pumping "Theme from Jaws" and the "Theme from Rocky". This is a terrific album, and belongs, not just in a music fans collection, but also a movie lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Best Horror Soundtrack ever!.......2007-02-05

This soundtrack is the best ever! I have a different version, the original this is some aniversary, but Jonh Williams is a genius! The Jaws Theme is just amazing and the other themes are just OUTSTANDING! This is the most known Spielberg soundtrack ever! I love this music, classical isn't my favorite genre of music, but this soundtrack is amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Jaws - Collector's Edition.......2006-11-21

For those who have watched the movie Jaws (ask yourself, who hasn't) will know that one of many key elements that made the movie a huge success was the fantastic score John Williams did for it. This cd captures all the music from the movie perfectly, with some new elements thrown in that are not found in the film.

The linear notes are bright and colourful and provide some interesting information, which gives the overall package a nice touch. The overall cd package is certainly not a rushed effort and is worth every cent. A highly recommended purchase for those who love their soundtracks or anyone who wants to relive the film through the music.

5 out of 5 stars What "Uncle Sparky" doesn't seem to realize..........2005-09-28

...is that this IS the original soundtrack recording. This is the same recording used in the actual film. The old soundtrack released was a re-recording, done by John Williams especially for the soundtrack release, hence variations in track lengths and tempos when compared to this release.

Jaws is a fantastic score - one of John Williams' best, and certainly one of the best scores ever composed. And it is wonderful to finally hear the music as it is heard in the film. The old release had its points, but the sound was muffled and full of tape hiss. This new release has better sound and more music. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Jaws.......2005-09-21

With the exception of the Shark Cage Fugue being placed out of order (placed near the beginning rather than near the end) it was very satisfying to find this. John Williams is always a worthy buy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent ,haunting and mellifulous.......2005-06-14

i have purchased this CD from amazon .com being a fan for the movie. The moment i played it in my system , i imagined myself being in the sea with the great white right in front of me.The score by John Williams is a masterpiece and i would recommend this product to any one who likes melody and suspense in listening.Great work Mr.Williams.

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Amazon.com essential recording

John Williams's second collaboration with then-wunderkind director Steven Spielberg not only gave Hollywood one of its most indelible musical motifs--the rampaging shark's rhythmic, swelling two-note figure that's long since become a sonic archetype for terror--it won the composer his first scoring Oscar (he'd previously won for adapting Fiddler on the Roof) and arguably made him a film music superstar. Williams's oft-brooding score is one of the key elements of the film's gut-wrenching success, a shrewdly manipulative orchestral underpinning that evokes the idyll of a beach resort one bar, the horrors of being eaten alive the next. There are more motifs than melodies here, but as with Bernard Herrmann they evoke almost subliminal emotional responses, creating a masterfully menacing, brass-heavy concerto of surprising depth. Music for fly-fishing it isn't! --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Get Them BOTH!!!.......2006-04-29

I've been reading a lot of people's displeasure at this version of the seminal soundtrack, and I just wanted to leap to its defense. Those who don't recognize this as the "real" soundtrack have a point; especially if you have heard the new 25th Anniversary version, which does contain the music actually used in the movie.

But those people probably weren't around for the original release of the movie, and this version of the soundtrack in conjunction with it. I was, and I can tell you as someone who (like everyone else at the time) ran out and bought this...I don't feel like this re-recording blunted or distorted the effect of the music one bit. The memories of the film that it helped me recall each time I listened to it were just as bone-chilling and terrifying when they were supposed to be.

In fact, because the earlier version was more an evocation of the film's essence, rather than the music that actually enhanced the visuals, a lot more nuances and a lot of the primal essence was brought out here than with the "true" soundtrack.

I'm not one to fall victim to the obvious calculation of marketing tactics, but in this case I would strongly recommend that the die-hard movie soundtrack lover purchase BOTH versions. Think of this one as the "concert" version, and the new one as the "true" soundtrack. Either way, hey, how can you go wrong? It's JAWS, and it's John Williams, for cripes' sake! Either way, just enjoy...and appreciate the fact that you can listen to this music while having a snack...instead of BEING one...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Horror Score.......2006-04-07

This soundtrack is a perfect blend of happy/classical music, and downright disturbing attack music. Just when you think things are sounding brighter, the frightening music begins. The stark contrast is quite shocking, and is a plus in this score. I highly reccomend this.

Ah, the classic JAWS score. An extreme favorite in my film score collection. Nothing will ever replace this famous score. Buy it now before it is too late!

5 out of 5 stars This is the original record version from 1975.......2004-11-28

Not the fragmented cue-track version. And I share bossrock's preference for this version. My favorite passage is the second part of PREPARING THE CAGE. It sounds like the musical equivalent of suspended animation.

There's a recurrent string chord that runs thru JAWS. A single sustained chord. With an off-kilter feel. Due to the presence of the dissonant violas. It sounds like the violas are playing a descending second to the tonic violins. Or something like that. Well in any case, PREPARING THE CAGE contains the best use of that chord.

Bram Janssen said: "Could one compare it with STAR WARS or RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK? I think one would better compare it with THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS and THE COWBOYS."

This is a profound truth. Williams wrote JAWS shortly before his soul got possessed by the malevolent ghost of Richard Strauss.

1 out of 5 stars Not Good.......2004-09-09

This is a huge disappointment. There are so many errors like the first track. It says main title and first victim but this is not the first victim music at all. And you can barely hear the the melody in the music. If you want a better cd get the Jaws Anniversary collectors edition. It is well worth it.

3 out of 5 stars mediocre mess, nonetheless worth having for some.......2005-07-07

If you've never purchased one of these Silva Screen best-of score CDs, let me first say this: unless you're a true film-score nut (like me), don't do it. Just don't. They really aren't terribly good. This one, like most, is played by The city of Prague Philharmonic, and it's not a terribly talented orchestra. They play very flatly, they miss notes, their orchestrator makes odd changes to composers' music. The end result of all this is that if you're familiar with the film versions of the pieces of music they're playing, it can be, frankly, a bit difficult to listen to.

That said, there is one decent -- decent, mind you -- reason to buy this CD. That's for the five-minute track of music from Spielberg's "Duel." It isn't great music, by any means, but if you're a Spielberg fanatic, this is the only release there has ever been (to my knowledge, at least) of music from that movie.

To be fair, not all of the tracks here are poorly done. "Hymn to the Fallen" comes off fairly well, and so does the music from "A.I." and "The Terminal" -- and the "Minority Report" theme is actually quite good. But much of the rest just doesn't sound right, so if you're looking for a quick way to assemble a quality overview of Spielberg music, this isn't the way to go.

That brings me to my final complaint, which is that "The Lost World" is omitted entirely! There were several good themes done for that movie; it was no mere rehash of "Jurassic Park."

For the seriously devoted only.

5 out of 5 stars Varèse Sarabande à son meilleur!.......2003-04-17

This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".

Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).

5 out of 5 stars "the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06

The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.

For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.

This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.

A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

SO IF UR LOOKIN KEEP TRYING ONE WILL POP UP SOONER OR LATER BUT PLEASE BE PREPAIRED TO PAY A LOT OF MONEY FOT IT A SITS VERY RARE AND COLLECTABLE.

5 out of 5 stars Superior to 'Jaws'.......2005-07-31

This very hard-to-find soundtrack is a gem! Far superior to the original 'Jaws' soundtrack in almost every way, it builds on the original 2-tone theme that signalled trouble - the arrival of the shark. Whereas the first film's score was somewhat limited & moody, this one involves more action music, not unlike 'Superman' (released the same year) and 'Star Wars' (the year before). Williams seems to have a formula he followed closely for the film scores he wrote between '77 and '89, and this one was no exception. Even as a predominantly action score, he manages to weave creepy, suspenseful elements into it in tracks such as 'Attack on the Water Skier', 'Fire Aboard & Eddie's Death', and 'Finding the Orca', which hinted a little at Quint's theme from the first one. I was lucky enough to find this CD about 5 years ago, and for the sake of movie score lovers, I hope Varese Sarabande will re-release it!

5 out of 5 stars Jaws has a Close Encounter with Superman and Indiana Jones..........2005-06-28

I have always felt that the great John Williams was on a roll from 1975 through 1984. From Jaws to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, you ABSOLUTELY could not find a film composer with a greater talent for motifs than good ol' Johnny Williams. Jaws 2's soundtrack is right smack in the middle of this awesome run of heavily-thematic scores, and is a fine example of Williams' talent.

What is most interesting to me regarding "Jaws 2" is that the score, unlike the film, surpasses the original score, much like "The Empire Strikes Back" surpassed "Star Wars." When listening, you get the feeling that he was genuinely enjoying himself. Once that surprise settles in, you'll begin to catch tidbits of phrases that had just appeared in Close Encounters, and the brassy bits hint at what is to come with the Indiana Jones scores. It's all here; a sort of cross-section of Williams' prime era canon. The "Menu" theme occasionally sounds like Lex Luthor's Theme from the then-upcoming Superman film, and, strangest of all, for all of you diehard Williams fans (and I am one),the Main Theme from Jaws 2 sounds VERY much like Christian Bale's character's theme from "Empire of the Sun," which was released in 1987! Take a moment, think about it, it will click!

The one tragic thing about this score is that, for most fans, it is unaccessible. Having a limited release, if you weren't among the few who knew of its existence, then you were stuck in that unfortunate boat, the same one in which many listeners who search for Williams' "Dracula" score find themselves in: you're just floating out there, with a bunch of greedy, slimy collector scum who picked all of the copies up and are now charging RIDICULOUS prices for the cd. They circle the boat, with their little dorsal fins out, waiting for you to bite the bullet and give in to their outrageous demands. To illustrate this, I actually had to pick up an old LP version on Ebay in order to finally hear this nice score. I only spent three bucks.

What would be excellent is if a two-disc set could be released, disc one being Jaws, and disc two being Jaws 2. Unfortunately, since this film didn't have Spielberg's name plastered on it, it's always been the red-headed stepchild, and the soundtrack has been cajoled along with it. The score does not deserve to be forgotten; I tell you, Williams is in his prime here, on this soundtrack.

Good luck to all of you out there, in finding a copy for a decent price. I got lucky, with a bit of a compromise. But at least I got to enjoy the great music.

5 out of 5 stars Superior to the original Score!.......2003-06-20

The original JAWS music, while brilliantly effective in the film, was a somewhat empty listening experience. It was simple, moody music, with only one thing going on at any one time.

JAWS 2 is more of an action score, with more excitement and layered themes than the original. The moments before the attacks are not just suspenseful, the are actually creepy; dark and chilling, more like what Speilberg himself was expecting at first before Williams gave him the main theme. There are more attacks in this film, and they are more choreographed and spectacular, which works much better as far as music goes, giving the music more time to build, develope, and explode.

And as one reviewer mentioned, none of the tracks sound the same, which is true. While most of the attacks contain the main 2-note theme somewhere in them, they are rich in action and tension, with the horns and strings and percussion all doing their own thing but working beautifully together, much like the best of David Arnold's action music. And they are all remarkably different from one piece of music to the other.

So while JAWS 2 was an inferior movie, its more conventional, spectacular, action-driven approach makes for a far more exciting and reccommendable score.

5 out of 5 stars One of John Williams' Crowning Achievements.......2002-12-25

I believe Williams surpassed his score for "Jaws" with the original score for the 1978 sequel. I've heard few (if any) scores as musically evocative as this one. Williams flirts with brilliance again and again -- and occasionally misses altogether -- but with "Jaws 2" he absolutely could not have done better. This score should be at the top of any Williams collector or soundtrack aficianado.

5 out of 5 stars This JAWS Bites!.......2005-01-17

JAWS is one of the great adventure scores that has transcended its scope in both film and the public conscience. The ominous 2 note motif that develops into the JAWS theme is a shinning example of composer John Williams' unrivaled ingenuity and mastery over film music. It's not surprising that 25 years later at the onset of its anniversary the film and score have become an indelible part of public's subconscious. Just hum the 2 notes of the theme when you are near the sea and you will stir a sudden element of fear. That's because the Jaws theme has been so successfully conditioned in our minds that it has an almost clinical effect on us.

Around the time of the 25th anniversary of the film, Varèse Sarabande announced their plans to release their first expanded recording of John Williams' original 1975 Oscar wining score for JAWS. Previously the only album that existed was the Original 1975 re-recording which Williams had recorded as an abridged version of the score although he had graciously expanded on some of the set pieces and changed the orchestration and pace. There were also various Concert re-recordings of the Main Theme and other cues on Boston Pops recordings But, Varèse's Plans to release their re-recording of Williams Original score were cut short in anticipation when Decca beat them to it by issuing Williams' original 1975 recording session of the complete score in 2000. While there is nothing wrong with Williams original score nor his conducting, the album while conquering the market place only suffered in terms of a dated sound recording. The only disappointment here being that the demand for JAWS was already eclipsed by Decca's version leaving the release of the Varèse issue in the shadows.

So the question is, if one already owns the Decca issue, then is the Varèse re-recording with Joel McNeely leading the Royal Scottish National Orchestra worth a try? Of course it is, especially if you are die hard Williams fan. For this recording sheds a much different appeal to Jaws then its original predecessors. The wonderful 20 bit digital recording is an ear opening Tour de Force! The superb recording perfectly captures the spirit of the original recording with such depth and clarity that cannot be found elsewhere. The score sounds more brutal and ferocious than ever before. It does have the much criticized Concert acoustics but the scope of this score supports it entirely. Actually its one of their better recordings.

The score is presented in more or less chronological manner with a few deviations. From the opening Jaws theme which segues to the The First Victim which highlights a more vicious and violent presentation of the brass. The various Shark Attack cues are extremely brassy and more percussive. Specially notable is the percussive section in Man Against Beast which starts at the 2:35 mark and builds to a tremendous excitement over Williams' jaunty Sea chanty theme. The score on the outset wonderfully captures the sea faring adventure and helps to enrapture the listener in spirit throughout its narrative.

Ben Gardner's Boat showcases a wonderfully homage to Bernard Herrmann's Psycho murder motif and that's not surprising since Spielberg himself alluded to that when comparing Williams' contribution to the classic theme in the original 1975 album's Liner notes. The Great Shark Chase here is better represented by Williams' original film version and the best cue is the unreleased Quint Meets His Death: A jarring ostinato figure punctuated by brass and swirling piccolos which again pay tribute to Herrmann's Psycho. This rendition along with the score throws a different light to Williams' own interpretation of the cue (omitted in the film) as they are both marked different in annotation. Another example is Montage which is more classical in nature. It is interesting to note that Williams altered his original score during the recording sessions because of the limitations of 1975 recording technology. Luckily, McNeely conducts the score as it was originally written. The RSNO performs admirably without any noticeable errors and the tempos are just about perfect.

The packaging is skimpy with some of the most pretentious and non-linear liner notes ever. While, producer Robert Townson pays tribute in an interesting essay. The cover is by Varèse veterans Bob and Matthew Peak. I actually prefer the backside cover than the front cover which features a Tiger shark rather than the Great White.

Overall, this album gets more enjoyable and is a wonderful companion to its original counterpart(s). In comparison to previous recordings, this JAWS packs enough bite. So, pick this up and enjoy JAWS as it was meant to be heard and be blown away by the sound!

5 out of 5 stars THE version to get.......2003-07-13

There have been many releases of the Jaws score in the past. The first on LP and cassette and then a couple of releases on CD that only lasted about 30 minutes.

But this 2000 release from Varese Sarabande gives us 25 tracks, lasts 52 minutes and is a brand new digital recording (maxing out the excitement if you have big speakers) performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and conducted by Joel McNeely. It sounds great and is a more complete package than the other Jaws CDs, especially when you consider then extensive liner notes.

Even brilliant unused cues such as 'Quint Meets His End' are included. The Jaws music is way more than just DUM DUM DUM. There is a very good reason why John Williams took home that Academy Award and this CD is the best proof of that. Must buy.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Score!.......2002-08-26

Finally! The complete score from the classic movie, re-recorded by Joel McNeely and the Royal Scottish Orchestra. Every bit of John Williams' music is here, and the CD also comes with a very informative insert. This is a must-have for film-score fanatics; A vast improvement over the highly-truncated CD's that were previously available.

Being a BIG fan of JAWS, I felt I had to have the new soundtrack. I was very much pleased with the addition of the other cues. And its also nice to have them in the order they appear in the film. The soundtrack is a MUST for any fan of JAWS!
