Got this for an aria V'adoro Pupille. Was surprised to find tempo so different from other singers' versions, and she has many added florishes, but it is enjoyable. The recording is from a live performance so there are coughs, etc., as well as wild applause, but a nice addition.

Beverly Sills' trills..........2006-09-06

are fake. How can someone hear them and say that no other singer can match or surpass them? Love her all you wish, she used a false technique to produce the trills (as Bartoli does in her fioritura singing - exciting, but not technically accurate); Sutherland, Streich, Gruberova, and Hempel (Ponselle for that matter) executed TRUE, accurate (and quite pleasing to the ear) trills. Thank you.

Now Beverly Sills definitely ain't a pin-up Cleo like Leonor Varela in the movie disaster from the 90ties but she was a very beautiful woman and had the voice of a sirene in those days, perfect for Handel, as perfect as can be. Her "V'adoro pupille" has to be heard to be believed, it's bursting with seductive colours. Ruth Ann Swenson could learn a thing or two from Sills here when it comes to phrasing and colouring. The "Da tempeste" is flawless, I could listen to it over and over again. Yet, why are there only highlights? Treigle&Sills are so great, they deserve more!

Ignore the ignorant basher.......2003-08-04

This JJ fellow really has a lot of nerves. Lately there's been a diva war between Callas, Sills, and Sutherland and he/she hasn't let up since. To the basher: we have every right to say that Sills is the best singing actress of this century; this is a Sills site! And we do not believe Callas is in the same league. She was a great actress but she had an annoyingly dry, coarse voice, even in her prime.

This is a fabulous live performance, very much comparable to the 1967 recording on the RCA label. I do have to say though, that some of the tempi are very slow, but then again when you have incomparable singing from Sills, one cannot wish for more. ~bash review neutralizer

Supposedly a complete retrospective - 29 songs, and they leave out Something I'll Remember?

...but this is still a very worthwhile compilation. One warning: keep the CD out of direct sunlight, or the case will warp to the point of becoming worthless! I've never seen any other CD case do that. Interesting.

Close But No Cigar.......2004-10-15

This is a fairly inclusive set of songs, but I'm really surprised that they omitted one of Dennis Yost's best vocal achievements, "God Knows I Loved Her" from the "Song" album.
Strange I haven't seen that song anywhere, except on the original vinyl album.

Good & bad.......2004-01-25

Sure, lots of rare LP cuts on here, but the sound on this collection is kinda poor. I transferred & restored all of my LPs & singles off vinyl onto CD before these 2 new Classics IV collections came out, and it sounds as good as this. I love "Nobody Loves You But Me", but it is obvious that it is off vinyl...or sure sounds like it anyway. If you can live with the quality, it is worth adding to your collection.

I don't believe it! After thinking I'd never get the songs from their album "Song" on CD, that they excluded from their other excellent anthology...here they are on CD! I am so happy! My "Song" album is scratched to bits. Now, I can just hit the "repeat" button on the CD player, and listen to over and over again..."Nobody Loves You But Me..."

Traces Of Long,Long Ago !.......2005-11-03

If you are a baby boomer that remembers.....and liked, Dennis Yost And The Classics IV, and your music taste hasn't changed; you will love this CD and I will tell you why.
In a review about a CD I typed up prior to this one being, Come A Little Bit Closer: The Best Of Jay And The Americans, I spoke very highly of the sound quality on that Disc and I am saying the same thing about this, Dennis Yost And The Classics IV, CD. Both are, Legendary Masters Series, and both sound Phenomenal! I purchased these two CDs together from Amazon a few months ago ( May; I believe ) and to me the sound quality on these two discs are about as close to perfect as it can be. To tell you the truth, I never ever thought I would hear 60s music sound so clear again but here it is !.
Like, Bread, and, Lobo; The Classics IV had that soft rock sound on several of their songs and they are somewhat forgotten today but not by me. I guess I could call them Balladeers that had a great lead vocalist being Dennis. He had a very soulful voice and the band had several radio friendly tunes from that era that are here and some of them are, Soul Train, the romantic, Every Day With You Girl, the beautiful ballad, Change Of Heart, and the huge smash called, Spooky, but the main reason I purchased this CD was for the then very popular and still very beautiful classic ballad called, Traces. Being another radio friendly tune; it charted in February 1969 and peaked at # 2 and with good reason. Each to their own opinion; but for me, Traces, is THE ballad and/or THE song on this compilation. Turn the lights down low. Turn the volume up and listen to Dennis sing that Ballad!.....Now THAT is what I call a gifted voice!
Two other excellent songs on here are the very pleasant, Something I'll Remember, and, Waves, and although it's been awhile; I know I have heard both of them on the Radio too and as you listen to this disc you will hear, The Classics IV, play a few songs that resemble both, The Four Seasons, and, The Righteous Brothers, and they sound pretty darn good too.
Overall; there are a lot of good memories here for anyone even close to my age that are familiar with and like this band. I guess I could say "literally now" that the songs on this CD are, Traces Of Long Long Ago, and I don't believe they have ever sounded better !.....Highly Recommended !

Worth the wait........2004-01-25

I'm sure they could have put a few more tunes on, or a promo or 2 could have been the icing on the cake. Nonetheless, it took a STUPIDLY long time to get this collection out. I bought the budget releases, and Atmospherics, and the sound quality on this release is by far superior. Classics IV material could still use a good remixing to give it some low end thump, but all the common hiss & harsh sound of other collections is gone from this one. Gotta give 'em 5 for doing this!

Timeless Treasures.......2002-12-07

Dennis Yost has an excellent voice. Listening to these songs from the sixties is a strange experience. Here we have a group of songs that made it to the top forty in the sixties that are timeless. They are not time pieces. They are every bit as contemporary today as they were when they were recorded over 30 years ago. They didn't age. You don't hear a "60's sound" here. This isn't nostalgia. This is warm cozy fireside jazz, with Dennis Yost and his intimate smokey vocals, and the band with their air-tight smooth arrangements. Every song an original. Every song a winner. And a lead singer with a voice mature beyond his years.

One reviewer said this collection was overdue. "About time" is right!

Wonderful Music.......2007-07-05

I had enjoyed this album of piano music years ago on a cassette tape. I wondered where I might find a copy of the music on CD. Amazon came through with a used copy. It took a couple of weeks to get it, but I have really enjoyed having the music once again. Because it is a 22 year old CD, I had to tag it manually for album art and information, but that is to be expected. The music is great for late night relaxing and stress reduction.

I bought this after hearing a track played by Raul Campos on KCRW's Nocturna (a great show if there ever was one). I was happy to discover that it is in fact a mix. I am a huge electronica fan liking various styles. This album is just brilliant. I love it. It is so smooth and the sound is so good.

I was expecting some more of Kevin's JAZZ FUNK HOUSE, but instead got a regular, dime a dozen TECH HOUSE cd, and not a very good one at that. So who ever kidnapped Kevin Yost, bring him back so he can do what he does best. JAZZ FUNK HOUSE.

I should have taken the title of the CD a bit more into consideration before buying Yost's latest. Not mixed - feels like it's trying to prove something... Consistency might not be what ky is into right now, but that is what I was hoping for --- consistent deep, smooth, jazzed-out house...If that's what you are looking for, I'd stay away from this abstraction.
But i'll still pay to hear him when/if he comes back to Atlanta.

Way Abstract. Not Much Funk........2002-07-12

I can't say a whole lot of good things about this CD, so I'll keep it short and sweet. The songs aren't mixed, the songs make you wait for disappointingly anticlimactic breakdowns, compilations that include works of other artists sound much better mixed, and KY seems to have gotten lost in the land of Creative Exploration, forgetting the big picture in the process. Where is the trademark Yost smoothness that keeps me bumping Small Town Underground and Straight Out the Boon Dox each and every day? Nowhere to be seen.

Funky Pleasant!.......2002-06-26

Not as much of a dance record per se as was Small Town Underground, Mr Yost's very nice continous house-music mix. This is funky yet minimalist, reminding me of early purely electronic music at times, without that distinct "house sound." Mostly intrumental except for "close to my skin," where the voice is used as a repititious element. Not a continous mix. A very random, funky ambient feel. Lots of Bongo's and lively beats with a complexity of textures on top, nothing too slammin' though. Very Nice. Nothing to think about--just feel and respond to some fine, heady, chill-grooves.

Who is Michel Yost?.......2000-02-11

My studies of Yost's music and the concertos on this recording show he was no Mozart or Stamitz, but the music is delightful. It can also amaze us today how such virtuoso music was played on what was most likely a 5 keyed clarinet. Klocker's playing is nimble and has a nice tone. The only thing that makes me wonder is the sounds of a doubled solo part - you can hear two clarinets. It is certainly a tape dub of Klocker himself, but I can't think of a good reason for doing it.

A great dance floor jazzy house mix.......2003-04-22

I love Jazz and I love House. But there is so many boring "jazzy house" mix cds out there, it can be hard sifting through them to find the quality mixes.

This cd is quality. A dancefloor oriented house mix that does everything a good mix cd should. Great tunes, mixed well with a flow through the cd.

Highly reccomended!

Classic, unobtrusive, and smoother than a baby's bottom.......2002-02-27

I originally stumbled across this work when it was masquerading as part of Distance's 'In Motion' 3-CD set along with Paul Johnson and Luke Solomon, and have since proceeded to purchase Small Town Underground -- just to have two copies of the same masterpiece in my possession. If you are one to tire easily of vocal-heavy tracks and predictable melodies, this is the CD for you. Kevin's work in many ways encompasses the future of true house music, without heading too far off the continuum (read: progressive). He pays tribute to the roots of modern music by incorporating elements of jazz and spoken word...all the while successfully maintaining an aloof quality to his track selection. This is music that stimulates the thought process, music that invites you to search for a deeper meaning, rather than coercing you to find a shallow one. We all know that true art can be experienced an infinite number of times, and each time you can walk away with something new. Small Town Underground, in this sense, is truly a work of art.

JAZZ FUNK HOUSE.......2001-12-29

Yes, as the man himself (Kevin yost) describes it, "JAZZ FUNK HOUSE". This is a new sub-genre of house music as we know it and kevin yost is the mad scientist who cooked it up and put his love, sweat, and tears into every track. I love this cd, it has a sweet blend of smooth jazz, house beats, and souful basslines, all equaling up to to music that sets up a perfect atmosphere for a laid back get together for people who want to dance or people who just want to kick back and enjoy the scenery. I was a freinds party recently, I played this cd and every body loved it. Kevin obviously was born with funk, and just flat out good taste in music and he uses his creativity to lay down some sick tracks. Ever since I heard this cd of original music I have been in a mad rush to find more music like it. If you like this try david alvarado, kevin yost, harry the bastard, marques watt, dj garth or nude dimensions naked music. Listen and enjoy.

Beat Me!!!.......2001-06-09

Excellent mixes, soul-stirring deep beats, a certain elegance to it all - but the song selections aren't 5 star...

The CD starts off beautifully with "Set Me Free" and "Feel You" then wanders off a bit. Track 6, "Sturd-T-Strong Committed" has an annoying spoken word sample and tiresome beat - but track 7 "On My Way" brings back the joy with its latinesque movements.

David Alvarado's mix of Yost's "One Starry Night" is nicer than the one here...

Track 10, "Watercolors" is a simply amazing knock-down dance song.

But it's the way the disc finishes off - esp. track 11, with another annoying spoken word sample - that take the spirit of most of the rest of the disc down - takes it in another, edgier, noisier direction...kinda bone-jarring.

Still, this is a CD you can dance your butt off to...
