Red Planet (2000 Film) [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
It's not unusual for high-concept Hollywood projects to result in strange sets of cinema doppelgängers; in 2000, two studios released tales of astronauts stranded on Mars, first the so-bad-it-might-become-a-camp-classic Mission to Mars, then Red Planet. But if both movies shared a sense of Survivor bloated with extraterrestrial existentialism, their music couldn't be more dissimilar. In contrast to Mars's typically dignified Morricone orchestral score, Red Planet features a more adventurous fusion of composer Graeme Revell's synth-scapes coupled with a slate of electronica-infused songs by Peter Gabriel (the industrial "The Tower Ate People" and its remix), Sting (the moody "A Thousand Years"), and Strange Cargo ("Montauk Point," a brooding 1995 side project featuring William Orbit, Rico Conning, and spoken word artist Joe Frank). But the revelations here are Revell's genre-morphing collaborations with French opera star Emma Shapplin, tracks that fuse electronics, organic elements, and seemingly ageless liturgical music into an intriguing new whole. --Jerry McCulley

Sound Track .......2007-02-25
I loved the movie. I havea question, what is the track name of the music that Val Kilmer is listening to when the ship reaches mars?
Graeme's Best.......2003-12-17
Few musicians emerge onto the scene with such grace and background as Gaeme. Out of unusual places spring unusual people, and in Red Planet he demonstrates that unusual music has the same genesis. I dare to say that Red Planet is one of the best soundtracks to date for its unusual combination of styles. Although classical intonations for Sci-fi flicks are not unheard of (can you say 'Also sprach Zarathustra' from 2001:ASO?) Graeme managed to bring it to new heights with Emma Shapplin's voice and 17 century Italian lyrics underscoring space. He used a similar approach for the mini-series Dune and the underrated Pitch Black, although on a lesser budget. Other musicians have set their own marks in scores that they will forever be remembered for (John Williams `Star Wars' and `Indiana Jones', Eric Sierra `Le Gran Bleu' to name a few), and it is Red Planet that gives Graeme his place in music heaven.
IMHO the track that stands clearly above all the others is 'The Inferno', a classic-neoelectronic combination of time and space, heightened to near extasy by Emma's strikingly clear voice, something even unapproachable to S. Brightman. This score is heard as the lone star ship leaved Mars in its wake and transcendences over into deep space on its way back to earth, and its Graeme, not Kilmer, who holds most of these scenes, and its Emma, not Moss, who captivates us with infinite beauty. Gaeme has given us something to listen to every day, as well as introduced a vocalist (Emma) to the world that hopefully we will still hear much of (this said I recommend also Emma's own non-soundtrack singles, such as `Discovering Yourself').
Graeme Revell hits the mark.......2003-12-06
I haven't seen the film, and don't know who Emma Shapplin is: I only bought this due to my interest in GR's work (and getting it for $1.99 on Amazon didn't hurt). I was not disappointed, as he has written 7 tracks on this CD -- one of them co-written and co-performed by Melissa Kaplan (probably the best track). His work here proves his talent, especially his ability to convey a sense of the otherworldly, which I assume is the point here considering the theme of the film. As a bonus, I was introduced to Strange Cargo. [I'm not about to run out to the store and buy their albums, but their song on this CD was quirky.]
I hope that GR can keep it up for years to come. If you are interested in his audiosculptures, check out his CD "Zamia Lehmanni" from 1986, when he was in his prime [in the Industrial band SPK].
I am recommending Red Planet because it is a CD that you will likely still enjoy a year or more after purchase. Also, it simply doesn't sound like generic soundtrack muzak.
The one thing that bothers me is that it totals less than 1 hour.
Excellent all the way through.......2003-11-01
I originally sought this record for the alternate versions of Peter Gabriel's The Tower That Ate People (btw, it originally appeared on OVO The Millenium Show, a terrific record). Very happy with those remixes & also very excited about the quality of each & every other track ... Emma Shapplin, Graeme Revell, etc. A super disk.
A must by.......2003-09-26
This is a must-get CD if you like Emma Shapplin music. Sting did one song and it's a wonderful song! The album is a mix of rock, opera, and somewhat new age. It's worth a buy.

Rocking Red!!!.......2005-02-20
One of the same of Red's many great CD's....
Very great children's music, along with Hap Palmer,
I also thoroughly enjoy Greg and Steve---
There are so many great enchanting voices that relax
us, and Red is one of them!!!
This goes for Hap Palmer too!!
My favorite children's CD of all time.......2004-05-04
Red Grammer is my favorite musician for young children (and adults as well), and this is my favorite of all his albums. My preschool class love to sign "Hello World" and rock out to "Bueno Appetito" (and parents love to hear them using phrases in 4 different languages). But my two personal favorites for their beauty and message are "on the day you were born" and "Starlight, Starbright". Wonderful for parents, kids, and teachers alike.
Worth paying for.......2003-11-03
A friend of mine knew I was taking my two kids (ages 3.5 and 1.5 years) on a long car trip, and told me his uncle was a children's song musician. He dropped off a (burned) copy of this album to us to take in the car on the trip. We had never heard of Red Grammer before then. Well, we took the trip and everyone loved the album. It gets better and better each time we listen to it. My 3 1/2 year old just rocks out to it in the back of the car, singing and dancing along. It keeps him occupied the whole time it plays. We like it so much that I'm buying a legitimate copy of it, just to support this wonderful artist, and another copy to give to my son's school.
Best kids' music EVER!!.......2002-12-12
This is a wonderful, WONDERFUL collection of kids' songs! My daughters (ages 3 and 5) have been listening to it for more than 3 years -- this was the first tape my 5-year-old sang along with. They both LOVE it! We lost it over the summer and I was happy to replace it because we all missed it so much. The music is beautiful, fun, not annoying to parents, and expresses nothing but happiness. Red Grammer is a genius, and I'm glad (especially on long car trips) that we found him! Also, if you ever have a chance to see him live, do it! He does a great show!
Best children's CD we've ever bought.......2002-10-15
Red Grammer has a nice voice and plenty of musical talent, but the real stars on this CD are the songs themselves. Every one is a gem--singable, danceable, filled with messages of love and peace. I find myself humming them constantly. I'm buying multiple copies to give to my daughter's friends for Christmas.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome CD.......2007-04-25
This is by far one of the best CDs I've got in my collection. I loved their old stuff and was completely pleased to hear they were still making music--and that it sounds so much fuller and more mature than the collection of songs on Naive Art. As one of the other reviewers mentioned, there are a good 6+ songs on this CD that could/should be singles. Heck, the first 5 songs alone are outright wonderful. I find myself singing the songs throughout the day long after I've stopped listening to them. Probably the only song I don't like very much is "Fear of a Red Planet" which is humorous since that's the title of the CD.
If you like electronic music get this CD. You won't be disappointed! Also, if you are just getting back into Red Flag like I did, be sure you purchase this CD first. I would then recommend Bitter End and Code Breaker. I also purchased The Crypt but the production quality isn't as good and the songwriting and singing just isn't as mature as Red Planet.
dark and delicious.......2003-07-27
First of all, this is not the single! This is the full album! Amazon has it listed incorrectly. Anyway, on to my review... I have been on an enormous synthpop kick the past couple years, ordering almost every album of the genre possible from Amazon. I can't say why it took me so long to order a Red Flag album, but am I glad I finally did! I now have all their available albums other than the Lighthouse (which is shipping soon) and Fear of a Red Planet is my favorite. In fact, it's one of my favorite albums of all time. It's darker than some of their albums, but not quite as dark as The Crypt, The Bitter End, or Codebreaker T133. Half of the songs on here are single-worthy, my favorites being "On The Highway," "So Lie With Me," "I Love You To Death," "Cause and Consequence," and "Lullaby for a Restless Girl." Seriously, every album by Red Flag is worth checking out (except maybe The Crypt). If you are into synthpop at all, give these guys a listen. With so much variety among their albums, you're sure to find something to please you. Fear of a Red Planet is sort of the middle ground, combining all their sounds to date.
Wow!.......2002-08-24
Another fantastic album by the reynolds' brothers!! You gotta love 'em! Favs are I am the wind, cause and consequence, so lie with me!

This cd has a permanent place in my changer at home. From the first track, "Haunted World", the listener is taken on a fast and furious journey into a world where goa is god and sound is the only sense. The tracks are charged with trippy sound effects in all the right places which totally augments the experience. Definitely check it out!

Refreshing Portrait of the Musical Heart of AMC.......2004-10-03
I knew Dan when we were in our 20s, and I am very happy to say this CD captures the essence of who he is - without being self-conscious or pretentious about it - and the lack of guile is evident from the first note to the last.
The recording quality is superb, and the other musicians on this record provide competent support without stealing the spotlight. There's a lot of honest heart in Dan's playing, as well as his lyrics which he sings in a tenor voice that sounds like a blend between Sting and Don McLean. His influences have consistently straddled the fuzzy line between rock and country, and both blend into a nice amalgum in this collection.
Those who are well-acquainted with his work in American Music Club may be expecting something along the lines of "Engine" or "Everclear" - not quite. This is Dan Pearson on his own terms, free of the all-encompassing influence of Mark Eitzel's dark world. Those immersed in that world, and wanting nothing else, may not like this music (not at first, anyway).
Back in the late 70s, Dan was a good musician and a decent songwriter, and he's honed both crafts since then in the process of touring with AMC and various other bands. The essence of who he is, however, has not changed at all - he has remained true to his character throughout, never selling himself short. Even if you've never met him in your life, you can glean that from listening to what's here.
AMC meets Apalachia.......1999-05-07
Welcome to Red's Recovery Room and don't expect anyone to know your name. No-one is going to shout "Norm" as you enter the dark, atmospheric world of American Music Club alumnus Dan Pearson Pearson mines a rich vein of American music with his tales of love and loss, hope and regret. His songs run the gamut from Civil War fiddle tunes to raucous rockers. At times sad and soulful, at times playful and upbeat, always engaging, this is the best CD I've heard in years.
one of the best.......1999-04-18
simply one of the greatest cd's i have ever heard. isn't it incredible that such music will probably remain unheard by the vast majority? congratulations to all true music lovers who discover this absolute gem.
Alfalfa gets blue.......1999-04-16
Moody, roots banjo and angst. A plaintive wail of pure poetry floats over and, at times, collides with the instrumentation brooding and thrashing below it. One of the most listenable and addictive collections I've heard in a long time.
luminously beautiful.......1999-01-22
Led by ex-American Music Club bassist (and right-hand-man to Mark Eitzel) Danny Pearson, Clodhopper make luminously beautiful music inspired as much by Appalachian mountain ballads as the music of AMC - a melancholy but lovely combination. Pearson's plaintive tenor and solid banjo plucking also help this stand out from the pack of alt. country contenders. But don't be fooled by questions of genre - if you like your pretty music sad, or your sad music pretty, give Clodhopper a try.

Wow, I'm flashing man!.......2005-09-13
Hot Dawg! Here's one way cool release from Mr. Saxon & friends and a total flashback to a time when music was still good. Apart from the modern sound quality of the recording, it sounds like it was written & played in 1967. The trademark Seeds FUZZ & cheesy organ are all there --- in spades! Lyrics are great, check out "Fools on Capital Hill" and "Judge with a Bomb". Especially a hoot is "Violet Ray" -- any song with fuzz 'n' phasing about flying saucers & world peace is OK in my book.
Songs run from red-hot surf-style pounders with lotsa shouts, laid-back bluesy excursions, syrupy Doors-style crooners, and even a nice stoned country-rock ending. This is good stuff, course I still listen to all my old Seeds wax anyway. I'd rank this slab right behind their debut. These guys definitely don't need any formaldehyde to keep going.
