an excellent sampler of patriotic military music.......2003-02-17
I love this CD because it combines into one disc many outstanding and well recorded (Telarc DDD) performances of a variety of patriotic military tunes. For someone who doesn't want to break down and buy the entire "Victory at Sea" set, along with soundtracks to "Patton," "Casablanca" and more, this is a fine choice. My only complaint would be that conductor Kunzel has a habit of adding his own flourishes to pieces. But the outstanding clarity of the Telarc sound and the grandness of the Cincinnati Pops counters this.

EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14
WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.
Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15
This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.
The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!
Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!
"Epics featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra ~ 60 years of film scores".......2005-09-07

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come...this collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

What some whoppers of a tunes-dunes! Yaaaabbadabaaaadooooooooo!!!!.......2006-11-14
I have just bought this sound track. But I have watched the film several times and know the music very well. The highlight is the Prince Valiant Theme. Taa-daa-da-daa-da-taa-daa-taa-ba-baaaaa!!!!!!!!
The love theme love is also nice. The Tourney Theme is brazen and loud enough to sound like the toughie Hollywood knights. So this really has great pieces of music for a Prince Valiant fan, or somebody who loves 50's Movie Music.
I bought the CD for a Prince Valiant Party. I hope it will be fun!

A Must for Prince Valiant Fans.......2004-04-14
I love this cartoon series and had been toying with buying the CD for awhile now. I'm glad I finally caved and bought it because it made me appreciate the show's music even more. "Where the Truth Lies" is longer than what we've all heard on the cartoon, and "Love Called Out My Name" puts beautiful words to a love theme that is frequently played in the series. Some of the titles suprised me, particularly "Sir Bryant" and "Valiant and Rolf," because I don't necessarily associate that music piece with those characters. And a couple of the more distinctive music selections were missing that I wish had been included. But that's just me being an obsessive fan - the music that is here is excellent and varies in tone from triumphant to jubilant to suspenseful. Fans of the series and fans of instrumental music in general should all enjoy this CD.
The Singing Sword strikes back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-03-19
This is one of the greatest cds ever produced for a cartoon series, a friend of mine lent me this and after i heard i began looking for it, and now I'm glad I've found it. This cd has great arrangements, including medieval music, and the song "Where the Truth Lies" makes this cd unforgettable and an overall great listening cd, making some of the tv series fans remember some great moments of Valiant as well as the opening and ending songs. Just like travelling back to the splendour of Camelot and King Arthur's Court!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent Medieval Music.......2001-10-19
I was glad to find this cd, even thoguh it was a used one, it was in excellent status, overall this cd is great, it has a wonderful combination of medieval music and modern instruments, exchange really did a great job on this cd.
Where The Truth Lies + more.......2000-01-19
The song "Where the Truth Lies" has haunted me for years with its powerful melody and lyrics. The song alone is worth purchasing the CD. The sound bite up there hardly does it justice. If you remember this series, which was short-lived (a shame, I disliked the comic but loved the show), then this is for you. The instrumental pieces on here are also worth listening.
Who cares if it's a cartoon? BUY THIS!.......1999-12-08
This album ranges from a cheerful dance tune to the scariest piece of "evil background music" I have heard since The Exorcist. As a whole, the album is upbeat, light, and melodic. You need not watch the show to enjoy this album. This is NOT your typical Sat. AM Cartoon soundtrack! But then, Prince Valiant was never your typical Sunday Comic Strip, either! This album continues in that distinguished tradition.

waxman is the man!.......2007-05-10
i love waxman's music. i think of his work in the same way i think of kurt weill's music. the melodies are so rich, so complex and the harmonies stir the soul. the diversity of musical genres both covered was also wide and rich.
but as much as love the gerhardt/rca recordings, i am not fond of the selection of works chosen to respresent waxman. it is good to know that there are many other cds of waxman's work out on the market to be found and appreciated.
but i do like the 'elegy for strings' from old acquaintance, the ' a place in the sun' suite and 'sunset boulevard'.
Nostalgia and then some.......2006-02-20
Many times the score makes the movie. In this case Franz Waxman Film Scores contributed well. However as a stand alone collection this really does not have a place other than a once in a while listen to remember the particular movies.
Each piece is preformed well by the National Philharmonic Orchestra. However I do not see situation for listening to this album. It does not make good driving musing or reading music, or just sitting and listening to music. This does have a place if you are collecting various composers' works.
The list includes:
Prince Valiant (1954)
A Place in the Sun (1951)
The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Old Acquaintance (1943)
Rebecca (1940)
The Philadelphia Story (1940)
Taras Bulba (1962)
Many of the scores are used again in later movies. You can hear scores of Franz Waxman in about three hundred movies.
Franz Waxman Tribute.......2005-10-12
This CD sounds splendid. It is very rich and moving. A PLACE IN THE SUN is beautiful. REBECCA is very pensive and very much what you may expect in a Hitchcock film. However, the best cut on this CD is from TARAS BULBA. What a piece of music. It is both rousing and inspirational. Outstanding!
Wonderful compilation of vintage Waxman.......2003-04-12
Charles Gerhardt was just the right conductor to revive these classic scores from the prolific film composer, Franz Waxman: His lush, melodramatic interpretations of the music do not fit every genre, but he feels right at home here with the sweeping melodies of the silver screen.
A good selection of Waxman's film music can be found here, including his most acclaimed, Sunset Boulevard. (It certainly has a sparkle that Joel McNeeley's recent rerecording seemed to lack, even if the score is not present here in its entirety.) Other highlights are the stirring themes of Prince Valiant and the eerie and sinister tones of his score for The Bride of Frankenstein. A particular favourite of mine is Rear Window, sadly absent here, though to my knowledge only one recording exists (Lalo Schifrin and the San Diego Pops, Hitchcock: Master of Mayhem): Fans can take solace in the fact that one of the Rear Window tunes appears here in its earlier form as we heard it in A Place in the Sun.
If you are a film music buff, this is definitely worth a place in your collection. Gerhardt captures the essence of Waxman perfectly.
Franz Waxman's Music is Magic.......2001-10-02
This CD is a wonderful place to start your collection of Franz Waxman film music.
Waxman's sense of melodic line and tasteful harmonies are masterful. Of particular note are his suites from Prince Valiant, and The Bride of Frankenstein (also used in the old Flash Gordon serials). Charles Gerhardt does a fine job conducting this wonderful collection of jems.

Fun in a cartoonish sort of way.......2003-03-23
Scoring a live action/animation film can be a difficult thing. Do you mickey mouse every scene or play it straight? Silvestri does both, but mainly in a comic fashion. Lots of jazz musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra, as well as the orchestra itself provide the music and the result is a good one. For the jazz parts, Silvestri throws in a solo trumpet, saxophone, piano, bass, and drums. "Maroon Logo" and "Maroon Cartoon" are 2 mickey-moused tracks, meaning that every action on screen is reflected in the music. I can't help but think back to the old Warner Bros. cartoons here. "Valiant and Valiant" and "Eddie's Theme" are 2 tracks on the slightly somber side, employing the use of the wonderful jazz musicians. "The Weasels" is amusing, while "Hungarian Rhapsody" contains the scene where Donald and Daffy Duck duel with each other on the pianos. "Judge Doom" is the most ominous track on the album, sensing evil is right around the corner. "Why Don't You Do Right" and "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down" are 2 songs from the film, the former one a sultry and swinging song sung by Jessica Rabbit in the film and the latter a comically entertaining one sung by Roger Rabbit. "Jessica's Theme" is sultry, with a slightly suspect feel to it. "The Gag Factory" is one of the highlights of the album, with the orchestra shining at its best with racing brass rhythms and strings. "The Will" is a great finale track, while "Smile Darn Ya Smile/That's All Folks!" is somewhat of a goofy song with Porky Pig quoting his famous line at the end. The best track is "End Title", which brings together all of the themes in the film into a 5 minute suite. A great effort on Silvestri's part and a wonderful recording, as well as a great orchestral performance.
I have the original CD..........2002-06-05
...and it is absolutely wonderful. Alan Silvestri is an incredible composer. I have several soundtracks from him and I'm a huge WFRR fan to boot! This soundtrack is a must have for any fan of this movie.

One of the most engaging, entertaining and fun scores of the year 2005. Composer George Fenton does a splendid job on creating the "real" athmosphere for this wanna-be-war CG-animated flick. Fanfares, marches, humor, action, love - all in one. Highly recommended!!!

This was released in 2001, but dont worry it is still available at amazon.co.uk or Silva Screen's own website, silvascreen.co.uk
What you have here is all of Silva Screen's Miklos Rozsa tracks ranging back to 1993 up through the (then-current) release of 2001.
In 93, the Spellbound Concerto was included on an Alfred Hitchcock compilation.
The bulk of these tracks fare from the 1996 "Epic Film Music of Miklos Rozsa" with the City of Prague Philharmonic conducted by Kenneth Alwyn.
The remaining tracks originate from as follows:
-Providence from 1998's Arthouse Cafe Vol. 2, Silva Screen's first series of European Film Music
-The Theif of Bagdad from 1997's incredibly popular Warriors of the Silver Screen.
- Julius Caesar from 2001's 'Shakespeare at the Movies'.
There was no track newly recorded for this release, just a collection of the previous Rozsa CD with other tracks in Silva's back catalog/library.
A good collection, much better than the oddly still in print 1996 compilation.
Recommended.
"The Heavy-Weight of setting standards...Miklos Rozsa".......2002-01-08
A leader among composers in the "World of Cinema Scoring"...Miklos Rozsa is a name that sets the standards high in his music endeavours...his compositions reek with rhythm, melody, themes, originality...Rozsa's scoring style has always been one step ahead of other composers...romantic passages of love themes, thrillers and historical counterpoints tend to lend themselves with the pen of this brilliant human being who feels the heart of what the director and screenplay is trying to express...music becomes another character in this triangle of a media known as the CINEMA.
Who better to present the illustrious works of our composer than The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra...led by Kenneth Alwyn...Paul Bateman...Nic Raine...and the Crouch End Festival Chorus...Musical Director:David Temple...Silva Screen Records released "The Epic Film Music Of Miklos Rozsa"(SSD-1056) in 1996, a collection to be reckoned with...now with this 2-CD-Set, more complete with additional scores and some hard-to-find cues.
Let's look at the additional scores ~ "PROVIDENCE"(1927)..."THIEF OF BAGDAD"(1940)..."JULIUS CAESAR"(1953)..."BEAU BRUMMELL"(1954)..."SPELLBOUND"(1945)...the last selection was an Alfred Hitchcock project and Rozsa's romantic dark theme with overtones of a dreamlike mood that overtakes each passage, this became a classic and is still as fresh today as it was when originally released in the '40s.
If you don't own both releases from Silva Screen...you're missing what "film-score-buff" collectors crave, film scoring on the highest plain...not to mention the latest in recording technology "HDCD" and DOLBY SURROUND...just like sitting in the theater and watching your favorite classic from the past...one can only hope this Silva Screen Digital Film Scores Series will continue now and in the coming years, gotta love it!

New wine in old bottles.......2001-12-02
Silva's 2-CD set of "The Essential Miklos Rozsa" treads no new ground, loaded up, as it is, with the old warhorses such as selections from "BEN-HUR," "JULIUS CAESAR" and "KING OF KINGS."
Silva's primary activity in recent years seems to have been repackaging old sountrack albums, throwing in a withheld track or two to make it seem "new" or to force the hand of completists (such as myself, I must admit, when it comes to the music of Miklos Rozsa) who absolutely must have every recording from their favorites, whether it deserves purchase on purely artistic merit or not.
This set is merely an expansion of Silva's "Epic Film Music of Miklos Rozsa" CD issued about three years ago. That disc had the virtue of including a selection from the composer's "GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD", properly instrumented for the fisrt time (unlike the original soundtrack), and one from the Main Title, and exceptionally moving Finale, from "BEAU BRUMMELL" (music Rozsa characteristically "ghost-wrote"to replace rejected parts of the score by the original composer, Richard Addinsell), previously unavailable commercially. They are included on this 2-disc set, though most of the other selections are available elsewhere, and in superior performances.
As always, Nic Raine and Kenneth Alwyn, with the City of Prague Philharmonic, deliver adequate but uninspired performances of Rozsa's music which, admittedly, is among the more difficult to perform among the works of major film composers.
In the final analysis, potential buyers or long-time afficianoados would be advised to spend their money on the splendid 2-CD set "Miklos Rozsa at M-G-M (Rhino), or the forthcoming 2-CD "KING OF KINGS," due this Easter from Rhino." Each is more expensive, but the former contains extended suites edited from the films' original soundtracks, many never before released commercially, all under the spirited baton of the maestro, himself, Miklos Rozsa, while the latter is a long-awaited definitive version of one of the composer's most challenging assignments and uplifting scores.

Bl**dy Good Show and Rule Britannia!.......2007-01-10
Good show, Ol' boy! The Valiant soundtrack is a bow to the spirit of the great war film soundtracks like Battle of Britain, The Great Escape, and A Bridge too Far. One can feel the heroics of the RAF - or the RHPS, The Royal Homing Pidgeon Service (yes, it DID exist!) - through this soundtrack. It even has the Band of the Royal Air Force playing the RHPS March! Even the villianous German Hawks have a great theme. A fine musical nod to the Britain's victory in World War II.
A must to your War Film Collection.
