a life less ordinary (1997 film) [soundtrack]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
While not as audacious as the Trainspotting soundtrack (which effectively introduced the general public to electronica), this disc quite au courant also has strong marquee value. Beck's "Deadweight" is loungy, nicely juiced and very cool. REM's low-key, quasi-ambient "Leave" is an intriguing detour for Stipe & Co. All this plus exceptional cuts by Folk Implosion, Luscious Jackson, Sneaker Pimps, The Cardigans, and the Cheez Whiz splendor of Elvis Presley's "Always on My Mind." --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......2007-02-23

Mindi has done it again - I love this CD just as much as I love her first!

3 out of 5 stars It's a nice album with repeats of her first album in most of her songs........2007-02-19

I'm a big Mindi Abair fan. The first time I heard her was when I was in my car waiting for my day to start at work. I changed the station to the jazz station and I was blown away. I didn't know the artist. And...yet I loved her sax playing so much that I was almost late for work trying to get the artist name. The announcer came on after the song was done and said Mindi Abair. I jotted her name on a piece of paper. Later that night when I got home, I order her first album and her third because I thought the sound was on either one of them. Besides I wanted to see what else she could do. I got those CDs and I popped the 1st CD in the CD player, and it blew me away. The CD itself was excellent! This last week, I popped the other CD in, her latest one....I heard the songs. It didn't impress me that much. Like all artist now pop and Jazz, their songs sound alike from one song to album over and over again. I did like a lot of the songs though. Her voice is nice. It doesn't impress me when she puts her voice as a sound bite. I like it when she sings the song though. It was still fun, but I hope the next one she gets out of the same routine over and over again. Be a little more like Kenny G than let's say some pop princess like Christina Aguilerra.

4 out of 5 stars Life Less Ordinary - Mindi Abair.......2006-12-13

This is the second purchase I have made of the music of this artist. As before, there is quite a bit of energy expressed in the music. Some how this recording seems a bit more forward and I have always wondered why the studios seem to do this to a female artist. This is an excellent artist and I really do enjoy her presentation.

5 out of 5 stars Another Hit!.......2006-11-13

Great CD, a must have for the sax lover. With her vocals and unique style, much more then just a sax CD.

5 out of 5 stars Three Cheers for Mindi.......2006-11-10

Each succeeding CD released by Ms. Abair gets incresingly better and better. Just when I thought smooth jazz had reached its peak, Mindi comes along and releases another CD to exceed all expectations. Buy a copy of this CD, throw it into your player, and I guarantee you won't let it stop spinning until you have heard each song at least 5-6 times. Each and every song is peppy and upbeat, conveying that essential groove to it that Mindi expresses so well. You will not be disappointed with this latest release!

4 out of 5 stars Gee...........2002-12-12

I wonder why it doesn't include Beck. Maybe because its an ASH single. And, its one of Ash's best songs in my opinion. Definitely a more complete sound now that Charlotte is in the band and this song is an excellent example.

3 out of 5 stars A nice selection from the album!.......2000-06-15

This CD is a great appetizer for those who don't want to hear the whole album. The only bad thing, is that it doesn't include Beck's "Deadweight". With that song on, it would have make an excellent choice.

        4 out of 5 stars a life less ordinary.......2007-05-16

i really like the plot development. starting out with the downtrodden character of ewan mcgregor, who, after certain circumstances has been forced to confront his boss, and kidnap the boss' daughter (cameron diaz). the mix of angels who try to get the two main characters to fall in love, seemingly make matters worse for them at the start, with the constant meddling. all in all, it turns out to be an entertaining and romantic story

5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining film!.......2007-03-10

I don't even remember how I first saw this film, but I know since I did I've been addicted. Cameron Diaz and Ewan McGregor are awesome together in this crazy love story. There is also Ian Holm, Dan Heyada, Holly Hunter and Delroy Lindo, as well as tond of other supporting actors and actresses that all add their own spin to their characters to make this film hilariously good. It's a laugh and a tearjerker all in the same wrapping. Tons of crazy twists and turns that make this film entertaining to watch over and over again. I absolutely love it!

        5 out of 5 stars I liked it, a lot.......2006-10-24

I couldn't take my eyes off of it. If you do, you'll miss something. I actually got into it in the middle and couldn't figure out why Holly Hunter didn't die when smashed by a car against a rock. A few scenes later, I got it. It's a fun ride. I can't wait to buy it and watch it over and over. I think it'll be one of those movies that's fresh everytime and that end up using quotes from. (drives my co-workers crazy!)
Love Holly Hunter in everything I've seen her in expecially Little Black Book. Ewan was cute, and cute/funny in a odd sort of way.
Don't take my word for it, watch it for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars Calling this movie odd is understating it quite a bit.......2006-07-15

While I enjoyed watching every actor in this movie, I have to admit that this whole thing is a mess. The plot is completely unnecessary and has the texture of something they made up as they went along and then added just a bit more confusion in the editing. However, in some odd way, I wanted to keep watching in spite of the frustrating nonsense of the story.

Robert Lewis (Ewan McGregor) is a janitor who is pushed over the edge by a powerful and sadistically cruel boss (Ian Holm). In an act of criminal stupidity, he threatens the boss with a gun in order to get his job back (yeah, right) and then ends up kidnapping his daughter, Celine (Cameron Diaz). Tied into this are two, well, angels, who are assigned to get Robert and Celine to fall in love. Two more unlikely characters for a love story have seldom been put on screen, but the plot needs it, so we go with it, kinda. The angels are somehow made mortal, kinda, and are played by Holly Hunter and Delroy Lindo. These feckless but devoted angels are so odd that they become almost the centerpiece of the movie.

There are a great many oddballs in this movie and some wonderful little bits as Robert proves how incompetent he is as a kidnapper. Celine is better at it because she was kidnapped when she was twelve. She calls on this experience to help Robert try and extract money from Daddy.

You know that Robert and Celine will end up together in the end, but you cannot fathom the strange plot devices and twists, totally unnecessary, they take to get there.

Is it a necessary movie? Absolutely not. Is it a good movie? Not really. Is it fun? Kinda. Once you start watching it, do you want to see what happens next? Yes.

        Enjoy it if you can.

        4 out of 5 stars Serendipity.......2006-03-29

One of the most pleasant experiences in life, if you are a fan of movies, is to run across a film you cannot categorize, yet enjoy immensely, in fact all the more, for this quirk. Such a flick is "A Life Less Ordinary." The first time I saw it, I couldn't decide if I loved it or hated it. The second time I fell in love with it. The more times I see it, the more head over heels I become. Like the film itself, I would have to term this serendipity. Oh, that Hollywood, and everywhere films are made, would make more films that leave a smile on my face and wonderment at the serendipitousness (how's that for a word?) of life itself. How clever is God and His angels in their execution of imagination. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars life less ordinary song not included.......2006-05-17

i really love this film! its one of my favorites, and the album i have owned for the past 7 years. my favorite track by sneaker pimps "velvet divorce" is what got my attention. but i was dissappointed about that song not being on the soundtrack where Robert gets fired, then dumped and gets drunk and passes out in his bed...I really wish it was on there and if I knew who sang it or the name of it at least! If anyone out there knows, please email me to idontcarewherejustfar@gmail.com. thanks so much!

          4 out of 5 stars surprisingly good.......2004-05-24

For a movie as notoriously lousy as A Life Less Ordinary, it bodes well for the continuing talent of director Danny Boyle that the music on here is so solid. It's definitely not all good - the stripped down version of REM's "Leave" and Prodigy's "Full Throttle" are nothing special. But the new ones that really work - the cuts by Sneaker Pimps, Beck, Luscious Jackson, Ash, and especially Folk Implosion's sleak "Kingdom of Lies" work great with the random Bobby Darin and Elvis inclusions. This compilation's a good time.

3 out of 5 stars Starting to sound dated.......2004-05-11

This used to be a 4-star album back when it first came out, but unlike other albums that seem to be built to withstand the test of time, the soundtrack to "A Life Less Ordinary" now sounds dated. Unfortunate indeed, considering how strong the opening is, with Beck's classic "Dead Weight", but in this case it is understandable why the used copies are flooding the Amazon marketplace.

          5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2003-11-27

I don't think there is one bad track on the entire CD. I never saw the movie, but LOVE this soundtrack. From ELVIS to Bobby DARIN, to Sneaker Pimps, this CD has it all. I loved it, very eclectic and just plain great music. BECK too!

4 out of 5 stars Missing One of My Favourites!.......2002-08-24

I was pleased to see that most songs from the movie were included in the soundtrack, but the Oasis song, 'Around Are Way' that Ewan McGregor sang a few bars of in the movie was missing, and I would really have liked it if they had included the version of 'Beyond the Sea' that Ewan McGregor and Cameron Diaz sang together. That was one of my favourite scenes in the movie, and since Ewan has such a beautiful voice, I would have liked it if that version had made it onto the soundtrack.
