5 out of 5 stars Fellini + Rota = Magic.......2006-10-31

Orchestrated and conducted by Derek Wadsworth and performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the scores on the CD "Fellini Rota: Music from the Classic Films of Federico Fellini" are marvelous and unforgettable and I am never tired of listening to them. The CD is one of the favorites in my collection.

Rota's melodies have everything in them: Italy's shining sun, her blue sky, the sound of her sea. They've got ancient wisdom of Rome and eternal innocence of a child. They are in Cabiria's smile, Gradisca's walk, Anita's fountain, Juliet's quiet loneliness, it the songs of Gelsomina's trumpet, in La Saraghina's lurid dance on the beach. Rota filled his tunes with beauty, poetry, romance, longing, regrets and dreams that may never come true but they are beautiful dreams anyway. Sweet and melodical, gentle and rhythmical, kind and lovely, they keep playing after the films are over, all characters disappear from the screen and what is left behind is "a little orchestra of Hope with Love as its conductor". The last that we hear in is the magic music of Rota, bringing affirmation, hope and love.

5 out of 5 stars "two legends of film & music ~ Fellini - Rota!".......2005-06-26

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (The Czech Symphony Orchestra) performs the gems by composer Nino Rota for the films of Federico Fellini...scores are orchestrated and conducted by Derek Wadsworth and recorded at FHS studios, Prague on February 1993...Silva Screens latest reissue release "SYMPHONIC: FELLINI-ROTA", has all the romantic and poetic scores from the classic films of Fellini...as Rota's music remains in your mind with haunting and forbidding themes that will stay with you the rest of your days.

1969 - FELLINI - SATYRICON (Martin Potter/Hiram Keller/Max Born/Salvo Randone)

Nino Rota's tapestry is fine and the weave is just right...one only has to close your eyes and visualize the characters that came to life on the big screen...Rota's music was a large part of the picture...as you sit back and soak up each passage and counterparts that prevail...you know right then and there why music is so important for any film.

Silva Screen Records Ltd., Nic Raine(producer), Reynold da Silva(executive producers) James Fitzpatrick(project director), Yusuf Gandhi and Cherie Mathisen(album co-ordinators)...please stand up and take a bow for the rare gems you've given us...heads up for all "film-score-buffs" worth their salt, this is a keeper...and a big thank you to NINO ROTA (1911-1979)for sharing the legacy of his music with the world.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars essence of Fellini..........2007-05-09

As evocative as any perfume, this CD brings forth clear images of the films for which this music was written. Makes a charming background for any party, seemingly brainless fun, yet sophisticated and delightful. Also good to cook to...

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-04-22

For this release, Silva Screen released their previous disc of Music from Fellini films, along with the best tracks from Nic Raine's 1998 recording of the complete score of Romeo and Juliet, as well as Paul Bateman's 2001 Godfather Trilogy disc, along with a few new tracks and other tracks from Silva's back catalog of music.

The last two tracks of the first disc, and the entire second disc is devoted to Fellini Films. All of the Fellini tracks are from 1993's "Music From Fellini Films", with Derek Wadsworth conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic (then credited as the Czech Symphony), with the exception of "Toby Dammit" which was recorded for this disc with Mario Klemens conducted.

"The Taming of the Shrew" is from Silva Screen's successful 2001 "Shakespeare at the Movies" set, while Death On The Nile and the Glass Mountain have been newly recorded for this set.

In conclusion, if you had the first disc of Rota/Fellini music then perhaps this would not be worth it, but overall this is a superb collection with that previous release in its entirely (remastered in HDCD surround sound, I might add), along with the best tracks from the Godfather Trilogy and Romeo and Juliet, with some more films sprinkled about, its a must-have, for anyone who wants a taste of Rota for less than $25.

5 out of 5 stars "premier composer of Italy (1911-1979) ~ Nino Rota".......2003-08-26

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra performs the gems by composer Nino Rota, conducted by Derek Wadsworth, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Mario Klemens. This latest release "The Essential Nino Rota Film Music Collection", has all the romantic and poetic scores ever conceived. Rota's music remains in your mind with haunting and forbiding themes that will stay with you the rest of your days.

Rota has the ability to capture the moments from each cue in his scores with "THE TAMING OF THE SHREW", "THE GLASS MOUNTAIN", "LA DOLCE VITA" and "ROMEO & JULIET, the tapestry is fine and the weave is just right. That's just for starters, listen and recall the score from "THE GODFATHER" and "THE GODFATHER II", one only has to close your eyes and visualize the characters that came to life on the big screen, the music from Rota was a large part of this. And Disc Two with "THE NIGHTS OF CABIRIA", "AMARCORD" and "LA STRADA", can sit back and soak up each passage and counterparts that prevail.

Silva Screen Records and James Fitzpatrick (producer), please stand up and take a bow for the well deserved rare gems you've given us. This can only be one of the most sought after collections complete in every detail for any "film-score-buff" worth his salt. As you listen to this CD, you can visualize each scene the cue is recalling. And speaking for one and all movie music collectors----this is a keeper!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Maestro Rota's last film score".......2001-07-20

This is Italian composer, Nino Rota's last, and probably most unusual film score.

It's unique percussive sections [the wonderous, brittle, repetitive mechanical bird sequence] aptly demonstrate Rota's vast range. {He won the Academy award for "Godfather II"}. This is an elegant final work, not often heard, aptly befitting to the period, it marries Fellini's images with perfection.

THE SOUND QUALITY in DOLBY is excellent in surround mode - "Yes" a "must" for the serious collector.

[Pity that the movie is not available on DVD.]

    3 out of 5 stars A different Nino Rota..........2000-06-29

Nino Rota's score for "Il Casanova di Fellini" is really hard to describe. Through the use of unusual instruments (vibraphone, harp and harpsichord, among others) he creates an exotic score, unlike his other, more famous works for Federico Fellini, but very interesting nevertheless. Not for all tastes, and perhaps more enjoyable by those who have seen the movie, this CD is highly recommended for Nino Rota collectors.

The first of producer Hal Willner's splendid anthology series. Each outing allows an eclectic array of modern, vaguely avant-garde musicians to explore the work of a single composer. Here Bill Frisell, Sharon Freeman, Deborah Harry, Wynton Marsalis, and Carla Bley, among others, take on the haunting circus atmosphere of Nino Rota's scores for the films of Federico Fellini. The emphasis is on the jazzy, with Frisell's shimmering, ethereal take on Juliet of the Spirits, Jaki Bayard's solo piano version of Amarcord, and Freeman's lively suite from La Dolce Vita among the highlights. Although beginners might prefer Rota in the original soundtrack recordings, this is a welcome addition for the adventurous or those already on board. --Heidi MacDonald

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential Listening, but hard to find.......2002-02-19

This is the best of Wilner's compliations. These jazz artists -- the best in the buinsess at the time (unfortunatley Bayard is no longer with us)-- obviously love the music, and the affection and respect are apparent in every track. It's a mixed bag illuminating the different faces of Rota from the jaunty circus themes to the lonliness of lost love. This is truly one of my favorite jazz records and it's also a great anthology of lesser-known great artists.

5 out of 5 stars Jazzy covers of the Nino Rota classics - a must have!.......1999-07-16

The album is comprised completely of cover versions of the Nino Rota Classics (and those are anything but kitschy). I love the originals but I must say that I almost love these, for the most part, jazzy covers even more! The covers are much more moody, often slower and more melodic. This is an album to have!

4 out of 5 stars Modern take on kitschy originals.......1998-05-27

For those of you thinking you'll get the origional scores from the Fellini movies, this isn't it. This is, however, an elegant modern take on Rota's compositions by talented contemporary jazz artists such as Bill Frisell, Jackie Byard and Dave Samuels. Brings the Italian Riviera to life, but not the Italian Riviera of Fellini's 1950's and 60's. Still, this is a nice addition to any jazz collection.

4 out of 5 stars A Day at the Circus.......2001-01-19

Rota mixes in themes from other Fellini films on this circus band score. The album is a single suite of music, circus sounds, audience reactions & ringmaster introductions. The Fratalini Brothers are announced. Pistols are fired. There's a charming dog act. Suspenseful moments are duly accompanied by drum rolls & cymbal crashes. I really like it. But then, I'm hooked on every Fellini - Rota collaboration. Really, Henry Mancini's popular concert arrangement does it honor but little justice. Someday you might want to slide this lovely little TV show soundtrack into your collection, next to Roma, 8 1/2, Juliet of the Spirits, & La Dolce Vita.

        5 out of 5 stars A Gem -- A Must Own.......2003-11-16

This album is among the most enjoyable in my entire disc collection of classical music, opera, song, popular, etc. It's definitely not highbrow, just top artistry (4 string musicians and pianist) applied to accessible beautiful music in several genres, best characterized as "parlor music". However, this phrase doesn't begin to express the beauty of this album. Unfortunately, it's virtually impossible to find for sale. Perhaps the highlight is an almost 13 minute cut from the film music of Nino Rota who wrote music for a number of Fellini's movies. I have another of "I Solisti"'s discs "And the Band Played On", also superb and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy the genius of Rota besides the genius of Fellinni!.......2004-11-01

In the story of the cinema the only sublime exceptions in which the artistic alliance between filmmaker and composer worked out so well was in the case of Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Hermann , Prokoviev Eisenstein , Howard Hawks and Dimitri Tionkin , david Lean and Maurice Jarre but in the special case Federico Fellinni and Nino Rota , we have the most celebrated of all the previous couples.
The fertile and creative imagination of Fellinni seemed to have in Rota the ideal counterpart . Every one of his films is supported for this outstanding idiomatic character ; Rota gave the essential sound who worked out as an invisible actor in the Fellinni films .
And the life worked out as the right link among them . Rota was born nine years before (1911) than FeFe .
Rota was gifted of a precious musical talent , and his studies in Milan Conservatory and the Academia of Santa Cecilia augmented by lessons with Scalero and a journey for instruction in conducting from Fritz Reiner . His style was absolutely free of harmonic complexities , his music was delightful, spontaneous and direct .
Besides , he was the notable composer of films such The Godfather , The leopard , Riomeo and Juliet , Waterloo and War and Peace among the most remarkable .
You need to have more than inspiration ; you have to be provided of a huge scope and fertile gaze to catch the mood of that idiosyncratic filmmaker .
This winner team allowed us to enjoy of unforgettable melodies such La Srada , La Dolce Vita ,Bocaccio 70 , Otto e mezzo , Roma , I clowns , Amarcord (my top choice) , Giulietta degli Spiriti and Prova dórchestra
The Czech Symphony also deserves a worthy recognizance , in which virtuosism and above all adequate orchestral balance and sense of the nuance and élan .
The final words of the same composer will give you a more appropriate idea about this admirable work :
I am ver pleased with the care and respect shown for the music by Derek Wadsworth and the Czech Symphony Orchestra . And in a word of of wildly differing standards of sound quality , it is a great pleasure to listen to this new recording.
But this fact should not surprise us due this orchestra has been always one of the most respected European orchestras , and when you make an account of the top twelve European Orchestras , the Czech is a must in any list even of the most exigent melomaniac.
Acquire this work , and you will convince by yourself this was a wise decision .

        4 out of 5 stars Pull Up a Campari.......2002-09-02

Those "wild and crazy guys" - the Czech Symphony Orchestra conducted by Derek Wadsworth - forgo the schmaltz and acquit themselves nicely performing Rota's timeless scores. There's plenty of joie de vivre and pathos to go around in these readings. (the glissando in "Amarcord" is just right).

A terrific companion piece to this CD is the biography, "The Cinema of Federico Fellini", also available from Amazon, which chronicles the Master's artistic roots; his hot-cold relationship with the Church; obsession with studio recreation vs. on-location shooting; and whether or not Fellini can rightly be called "an intellectual".

        Solid music, solid reading.

5 out of 5 stars Rota brings life to film, and to the imagination.......2002-04-05

I was hoping I could find the soundtrack to Giulietta Degli Spiriti (Juliet of the Spirits) but it is apparently unavailable so I bought this CD. I'm so glad I did. Although the Czech Symphony, performing here, doesn't sound the same as the musicians in Guilietta, the music transcends the delivery--which isn't so bad anyway.

This is a great introduction to the wonderful, magnificent music of Nino Rota. He paints a mood like no one else. Whether it be the circus-like sounds of La Strada or the poignant refrains in The Nights of Cabiria, this music elevates and brings life to the imagination. I'm not sure how Fellini's films would fare without Rota but it seems they were a magic combination.

I'm also pleased to hear music from films I've not seen. The intro to I Vitelloni, for example, is fabulous; I wish I could hear more of its theme as well as further length treatments of others.

Lovers of movie theme music, especially that prior to, say, the 70s, can't go wrong with this one.

My favorite is the quirky, sparkling music of Giulietta.

        4 out of 5 stars Nino! Fellini!.......2001-11-26

I guess they don't make 'em like they used to? This disc is a great introduction to the collaborative effort of Federico Fellini & Nino Rota. The music moves from the exuberant, care-free joy of La Dolce Vita, to the sadness of La Strada, to the strangely moving pieces from Satyricon & Roma - well, each track contains all those moments and more. I'd give this thing five stars - if only they'd have selected longer tracks of music from each film! As it stands, some are mere fragments, and sadly understated. But all in all, worth a listen - if you end up seeking out the complete, original soundtracks - it will definitely be worth the trip.

4 out of 5 stars My life is a Fellini movie!.......1999-01-21

The whimsical, emotive music of such favorites as The Nights of Cabiria and La Dolce Vita jumps from this CD--you'll scan your room for bizarre characters shouting in Itallian! Listening to these works brings home the power of music in film, and the lack of such force in today's cinematic scores. Thank you Nino Rota for a taste of music far from the beaten path.
