Rock School [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
The soundtrack to the much-anticipated documentary "Rock School" will be released on May 31, 2005, through Trillion Records.
In this new documentary released by Newmarket Films, director Don Argott follows the ups and downs of the founder and students of a unique music school, where children ages nine to seventeen learn the ins and outs of rock and roll. Paul Green, self-proclaimed "|berlord," leads his students from practice to performance with not a delicate hand or subtle tone, but with the hard-edged screaming sounds of rock and roll itself. Students of all skill levels try to overcome their musical challenges, outside influences, and more importantly, the wrath of Paul, to achieve musical greatness.
Produced by Grammy Award-winning Phil Nicolo (Lauryn Hill, The Roots, Train), the "Rock School" soundtrack features Paul's students ripping through rock and roll classics alongside music legends: Alice Cooper; Deep Purple's Ian Gillan; Yes' Jon Anderson; The Police's Stewart Copeland; The Ramones' Marky Ramone; Heart's Ann Wilson; Megadeth's Dave Mustaine; and Billy Idol.

Let's get ROCKIN' !.......2006-08-26
Woo Hoo! This cd rocks! It is a great collection of classic rock...the Who, Cream, Led Zepplin, etc. I love Jack Black in the two original tracks! What style! The movie was great, and I'm so glad I have the soundtrack to keep it rockin' all day long!
First rate old school music for young generations.......2006-08-22
Although I do not own this album, I know several of the classic songs included in it. Kudos to the creative minds behind the movie and its soundtrack, for they're introducing young generations to the great world of first rate, old school rock (a territory I'm pretty familiar with).
I've seen this movie several times simply because I love the way these kids rock. However, my heart ultimately goes to Maryam Hassan, who plays the character of ultra shy Tomika, for two reasons:
1) Her incredible, mind blowing, vintage Rhythm & Blues voice reminded me that there's a widely rich, varied and rather idiosyncratic universe called old school African American music, a territory I'm eager to explore after hearing her. And, as far as I know, she was only ten years old when the movie was made!.
2) I also have extra pounds.
In the words of the late soul giant Marvin Gaye, right on Maryam. If you ever get to read this review, please be so kind as to keep up the good work. I believe you might be the next Aretha Franklin, and, given the dismal quality of the majority of popular music being made today, the world badly needs another "Lady Soul".
But let's not forget that this movie is about Rock & Roll, so I would like to give the following advices to the rest of the kids: keep rocking hard, with total frenzy and abandon, and try to find "your own voice". If you're so great at the age of ten, you might take rock to the next level in the future. That's exactly what four Brits known as Led Zeppelin did. Once again, the world badly needs a generation of gifted, groundbreaking rock musicians.
Finally, here's my recommendation to everyone who wishes to be introduced to the wonderful world of truly great Rock & Roll: buy this Soundtrack, pick up your favorite artist(s), and start your own Rock CD collection. Yes, you read it right: CD collection. Chances are that, at least the classic albums by the artists included in this record have been remastered and reissued in "Deluxe" packages with nice booklets that include comprehensive liner notes and many photographs.

There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03
The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.
Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26
Well here we are with a great piece of history.
This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.
Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06
I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.
Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.
This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.
The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.
If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15
Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.
Grease CD Reveiw.......2004-04-26
This Grease CD is the best! I listen to it every week. I just love Your The One That I Want.:) Amazon.com has everything!Olivia Newton-John and the boy singer have the best voices. Now thatnks to Amazon.com I can listen to it! The Grease CD is the best!:)

Where's Paul?.......2006-12-30
Just curious if anyone knows why the Wings song is left off of all these soundtracks? Is that song available anywhere? Thx.
I got mine autographed by P.J. Soles!.......2004-06-16
This is the soundtrack to the cult movie where P.J. Soles plays the Ramones #1 fan. It features two great original songs by the Ramones, plus an 11 minute live performance by the Ramones. The Ramones also back up The Paley Brothers on a cover of Ritchie Valens classic "Come On Let's Go". (Incidentally, Andy Paley later became a well respected producer.) The only other song recorded especially for this album is a cute version of "Rock 'n' Roll High School" by P.J. Soles herself. The rest of the album consists of tracks licensed from other record companies. Most of them are very good, although I don't care much for the weird instrumental by Brian Eno. Several of the songs have a "school" theme, appropriately enough. I should mention that "School Days" by Chuck Berry is not the original version, it's a rerecording that sounds almost identical to the original (it's even in mono). In short, this is a terrific soundtrack. Highly recommended.

Rock n Roll HS.......2001-01-26
This is a great CD and a great movie! I hadn't seen the movie in years and when I came across the sound track it brought back so many good memories. If you grew up in the early 80's and were into the "punk" scene this is the CD for you.

Customer Reviews:
A pleasant surprise - a great movie soundtrack.......2005-12-10
Note: this is an excellent album from a movie about a real 'school of rock'. The students actually rehearse and perform real rock songs with 'real' stars -- songd that the rock stars made into hits. It should not be confused with the soundtrack from a similarly titeld movie featuring Jack Black. IN the other movie, Jack black plays an obnoxiously useless lay-bout who fronts a no-talent band, but somehow lands a teaching job. That movie, and the soundtrack, are both atrocious.
This CD featuers a mix of well-known, and obscure songs, which are in many cases done better than the originals.
BETTER THAN THE ORIGINALS:
-------------
Barracuda (HEART's Ann Wilson);
Don't Stand So Close To Me (THE POLICE's Stewart Copeland)
Hocus Pocus (by Focus -- all students on this one)
Peace Sells (MEGADETH's Dave Mustaine)
AS GOOD AS THE THE ORIGINALS:
----------------
Iron Man (by Black Sabbath -- all students on this one)
Highway Star (DEEP PURPLE's Ian Gillan)
L.A. Woman (by The Doors -- vocals are dead-on Jim Morrison)
Rebel Yell (BILLY IDOL reprises his hit)
Heart of The Sunrise (YES's Jon Anderson)
Black Magic Woman (SANTANA's Greg Rollie -- later in JOURNEY). This song was originally written and performed by Fleetwood Mac, but it was the Santana guitar sound that eventually turned this blues number into a classic.
I Wanna Be Sedated (THE RAMONES' 'Marky', with Ty Ritter from the ALL AMERICAN REJECTS). Great effort but The Ramones' original hits are deceptive: easy to play, but extremely hard to do better.
All of the musicians here are incredibly good, and one hopes that they can one day write their own hits to perform. Unlike most "tribute" albums, the songs here don't just sound like throw-away or "B-side" songs. If these had been more obscure songs, then it's possible that at least one of the cover versions could have become a hit on its own.
Smashing!.......2005-06-04
This is my first Amazon review and I only ventured onto the site to see if others had anything to say about this CD. I am doing it as a favour to the wonderful group I saw perform at CBGB's Wednesday night. I did not see the movie but was invited by my mates to the after party and bought the CD solely based on the music I heard. I've been a drummer with what many say is the world's greatest rock and roll band for several decades and I have to tell you, any one of those kids could fill in for my mates in the band. I understand the little lad, C.J., is the star of the movie and he is just wonderful but for me, there were three heroes that night...the singer, Maddie, the bare chested lad Jeremy, and the drummer, Eric. Maddie has the voice of an old time rocker. No stony faced, spaced out monotones for her. She roared, she was the music. Jeremy Blessing (and is that a name!) is the stuff of the Mississippi Delta combined with Jimmy Page; in fact, I'd like Jimmy to see him live the next time he's in town. I intend to write to the School of Rock for his contact information. There was soul in every note and he owned the stage. But as a drummer, for me the main attraction was Eric Slick. This is a young lad who has obviously studied the masters. He has listened to people like Buddy Rich and Max Roach I am certain, and while I am loathe to say it, I believe he has also listened to me. This kid has no peers in terms of innovation; he has a deeply personal sound and approach. He had a fixed pulse on his cymbals as well as his bass drum; and while many of the young guitar lads would falter from time to time due to what I trust was a problem with the monitors, Mr. Slick never lost a beat and was the driving force that evening. He brought tears to this old man's eyes and he is another I intend to keep my eye on for future projects. He could fill my shoes any time.
I insist you people in the States buy this CD. Don't buy it for the old geezers; buy it for the kids and learn something from them.
These are kids?.......2005-06-02
I had heard a buzz about this CD and since it contains some of my favorite classic rock performers, I bought it yesterday.
Can I tell you that the kids are better than the "stars"?
Track one - Black Magic Woman - is incredible. Besides the incredible Santana-like guitar work of C.J. Tywoniak, it contains some of the best drumming I've ever heard anywhere by Rock School student Eric Slick. The steady bass of Matt Rothstein and keyboards of Steve Roberts make this track just about perfect.
Track two - I Wanna Be Sedated. I dunno, I'm a Ramones fan and I think these kids have Johnny smiling up in heaven.
Track three - School's Out. These are kids? Sounds just like the original, but better.
Track four - Barracuda. Now this is the keeper of the album. Who is Louis Graff and why haven't we heard of him? He rules! Jalea Cooner? Another guitar god! Amazing! I see Eric Slick on drums again. This kid is going to be a major star, and there's a Julie Slick on bass who is equally wonderful. Sister/brother act? Watch out White Stripes!
Track five - Highway Star. Two kids named Jeremy Blessing and Phillip Kingsford on guitar will rock your world. Nice bass work by Peter White and drummer Joseph Randazzo, III holds it together nicely.
Track six: Holy moly, Jim Morrison back from the dead? Chuck Flavor is his reincarnate!
Track seven: Okay, my all time favorite on the CD. Louis Graff and the Slick Kids again with Allie Hauptman on keyboards. Jon Anderson must have thought he died and went to heaven. These kids can stand up to Steve Howe and company any day.
Track 8 - Rebel Yell. Can't tell it from the original. That kid Slick on drums again. CJ Tywoniak and Madison Flego on guitars. They rule! Matt Rothstein of Black Magic Woman on bass. Amazing.
Remaining tracks: Don't Stand So Close to Me, Iron Man, Peace Sells, and Hocus Pocus. All better than the original. For sure.
So. Remember these names: Louis Graff. C.J. Tywoniak. Eric Slick. Julie Slick. Matt Rothstein. Madison Flego. Chuck Flavor. Jalea Cooner. They're all gonna be famous.

Great!!.......2005-01-16
Being that I went to High School during the era their reunion
took place..this CD HIT HOME to me..alot of my favorite
songs of the 80s.
Music had more meaning then and made more sense :)
still makes me laugh and smile.......2004-12-11
Okay so the movie isn't an epic tale, but, the music is still a quirky pick me up. So, pick it up!
Uhhhh..........2003-07-27
Well, first off I would like to say how totally awesome this movie is. And then I will continue to say how this soundtrack, was really good...but...of course there's a but...it could have been better. I would have really liked to have heard "Time After Time". That is the perfict song. I was bummed to learn that the cd didn't have that song, but all in all, it was a great cd. I give it 4 stars...
Everybody Wang Chung Tonight.......2003-06-17
This is one of the best CDs that has some of the most popular 80's songs on it. If you saw the movie and cherish the music of the 80's decade, then this is the CD for you. This CD features some of the greatest hits from groups such as, Bananarama, Tears for Fears, Wang Chung, Culture Club, and much more. My personal opinion of this soundtrack is that it is very upbeat, and will bring you back to the hip days of the 80's. If you enjoyed this CD, then check out Disc 2 of Romy and Michele's High School Reunion soundtrack.
um. . ........2003-06-03
the music on this cd is great and all, but i was highly disappointed that they didn't include 'time after time'! they only played it twice in the film. . .

Could Disney be hoping that contemporary kids and their keepers will bond together over this compilation of '60s AM hits disguised as a cartoon soundtrack? Perhaps they envision serious parent-child discussions about the relative merits of the album's two versions of "Dancing in the Streets"--the Martha Reeves & the Vandellas original versus the Britney-fied beats and Whitney-fied melisma of Myra's update. (Hint: Myra tries much harder but achieves much less.) Or maybe they just want to expose the world to Robert Goulet's clueless take on the Lemon Pipers' "Green Tambourine" (a Shatneresque cover that's conspicuously absent from Bob's "16 Most Requested Songs" album). With such good intentions, you can easily forgive them for trying to make a quick buck with this underinspired collection of overanthologized pop, rock, and soul hits. --Bill Forman

Recess: School's Out Reveiw.......2003-10-14
I'm a big fan of the hit t.v. series, Recess. It has mild violence (meaning little kindergardeners beating up ningas), and may want to keep children 3 yrs and younger away from the screen for a couple minuets (don't laugh at this paper if I spell MINUET wrong because I'm only 10 yrs old. I mean c'mon, can't a guy spell a word wrong....everybody does it) though they might keep laughing and maybe you might be laughing (I mean you don't see little kids beating on ningas every day)too.
A Fun CD From A Very Fun Movie.......2001-09-29
Disney's "Recess: School's Out" is the kind of movie you wish would come out more often. It may not be the most intellectually stimulating, thought provoking film to ever grace the movie screen, but then what would it be? What is it is a fantastic piece of entertainment, and the soundtrack follows well in the tradition of the film. Borrowing strongly from hits from the '60s, the soundtrack includes two versions of "Dancing In the Street": the original, and a new version by Disney's latest pop icon, Myra. The CD also has classics like "Born To Be Wild" and "Let the Sunshine In". Also notable is a new rendition of "Green Tambourine" sung by Robert Goulet which can be seen in the credits at the end of the film, and "Recess Suite", a five minute track combining all the different score variations from the movie.

This music is upbeat and great for kids to listen to.One of my personal favorites was "wipeout".If you are reading this opinion I suggest you listen to it if you didn't yet.I like this music alot, you probably would too.RECESS ROCKS!
This soundtrack does not whomp!.......2001-03-08
I thought that all the songs in this movie fit the story really well. It was a great movie especially if you watch the TV show. It was really cool to see a movie go back to 60s music instead of all pop. The new versions of some of the songs are not as good as the originals but they fit in the movie better and are not bad.
This review goes to the movie.......2001-03-05
This movie, is probably the third worst movie we saw on February of 2001, the movie tries to exactly do the same things that the Rugrats movie did, but it fails, for exapmple, in the animation, the jokes try to be funny, but they aren't they are used, they are exactly the same jokes we see on the cartoon, and altough they are new ones, none of them work, also it's a bit stupid, but the soundtrack is great, especially for the Martha and the Vandella's song.
