The Bride Of Frankenstein (1993 Rerecording Of 1935 Film Score) [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The sound era was barely seven years old (and the art of orchestral film scoring still evolving) when German-born composer Franz Waxman conjured up one of its first unlikely film-music masterpieces, this 1935 score for director James Whale's sequel to his hit Frankenstein. Indeed, Waxman created many of what have become the musical clichés of the horror genre, captured here in a spectacular new digital recording by Kenneth Alwyn and the Westminster Philharmonic; the exotic, lilting motif to "Female Monster Music" will even evoke Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Bali Ha'i," though it was written nearly 15 years earlier! Also included is a short suite from Waxman's score for another, less-heralded, '30s Universal horror film, the Karloff-starring The Invisible Ray; both are thoroughly annotated in a fashion that will please fans, musicians, and scholars alike. --Jerry McCulley

Brilliant...Full of color!.......2005-10-12
This is a magnificent score filled with melody and color. Exquisitely orchestrated, the score is very well balanced and conducted. It would make a great ballet. Please bring these forgotten and obscure film scores to life again. The composers, mostly late romantics, are so worthy of being heard! A major plus and welcome addition to any collection! If you like this, look for the Alfred Newman complete recording of the score to "The Song of Bernadette". Not great quality but wonderful music and so inspiring!
The best of Universal's monster music........2003-07-17
Max Steiner's King Kong of 1931 may have been a hallmark in the use of dissonant harmonics and large scale blocked chords, but it is Waxman's Bride score that set the benchmark for orchestral atmospherics. The first appearence of the Frankenstein monster has wonderful beginnings in the minimalistic, pulsating beat of muted timpani, leading directly into the ominous five note monster motif. Waxman definitely understands the importance of subtle nuance and complete character music motifs, over the oft used practice of large scale orchestration. The recording quality is impecable; with the defining track being the music accompaning the creation of the female monster. Waxman fans will also recognize his adept talent at beautiful string pastoral melodies (later to be seen in Rebecca, and other such scores); early on in the film. I highly recommend this cd; especially to film music fans, for its' historical significance as one of the few defining horror/sci-fi movie scores( along with Steiner's King Kong, Tiomkin's The Thing, and Herrmann's The Day the Earth Stood Still and Vertigo).
Great Rerecording Of A Classic Score.......2002-08-06
I have been looking for an original version of this 1935 classic, and one of the greatest films ever made, but I have yet to find it. I was in NY a few days ago, and picked up this version in the Virgin Records Mega Store. I decided, "what the hel, can't be that bad." And, as I suspected, it wasn't.
The reason that I only gave this rerecording 4 stars, is that Ieven though it is a great updated version of the score, it just lacked something. Something that the original Waxman score has. Its still a great buy, and with Halloween approaching, it is a must have for any horror film buff, like myself. Until the original film score is rereleased, this will be more than adadquate to hold me over. Finally, I have something to play in the background when I enter the world of "gods and monsters."
"sound came to the screen...and with it music of Waxman".......2001-11-29
When we think of legendary composers, icons of music in the early days of film scoring...the name Franz Waxman comes to mind, recall his work and career with such classics as..."Captain Courageous"..."The Philadelphia Story"..."Rebecca"..."Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde"..."Woman Of The Year"..."Destination Tokyo"..."God Is My Co-Pilot"..."Sunset Boulevard" and "A Place In The Sun", both won Academy Awards for Waxman.
But in 1935 Boris Karloff was about to recreate his role of the monster, but this time there was to be a female creation, thus we have "THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN", the score was fresh and original, with tones of something supernatural that completely kept you glued to your seat...listen as The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Kenneth Alwyn perform the complete score...as an added bonus we have "THE INVISIBLE RAY SUITE", composed in 1936, this vehicle starred once again Karloff, and his acting rival Bela Lugosi, who portrayed Dracula in 1931 for Universal Studios.
Listening to this CD, brings back memories of "THE BRIDE", played by Elsa Lanchester, perfection was her performance, she even scared me more than the Frankenstein Monster...so my fellow "film-score-buffs", this is a SILVA SCREEN CLASSIC not be missed...music from the "Silver Screen", at their finest hour!
Total Time: 46:27 on 13 Tracks ~ Silva Screen Records SSD-1028 ~ (1993)
At long last the music for Flash Gordon.......2001-04-25
I grew up a great fan of Flash Gordon, seeing him on evening television shows, a serial chapter a week. I have long searched for the music from the serials. A number of years ago I heard someone perform part of the Bride of Frankenstein and bought a Waxman collection that contained it. I was happy that it contained some of the music but longed for the rest. I did an 'Amazon dot com', i.e. searched and discovered there was a CD of the entire movie score. The listing had a review by another customer who noted it contained Flash Gordon music. My quest of nearly forty years is now completed. Thank you Amazon. I must say that I was disappointed that the enclosed notes on the CD did not mention Flash Gordon. I now realize Waxman wrote the music first for the Bride and later used it for Flash Gordon, but, if I am not mistaken, this is the music that inspired John Williams many years later for his score of Star Wars.

Classic - Hold the Chills.......2006-06-25
This is a fine collection of mostly classical themes.
Some of them have nice creepy moments, but on the whole, it's just some solid music. Not something to buy if you want really "spooky" music, but worthwhile for some interesting listening.
Packed with creepy stuff.......2000-12-16
This is an awesome album. It starts off with thunder crashing, running footsteps, a gate creaking, the wind howling, a cat screeching, a door opening, a woman crying that she needs help....and then SCREAMING! And then straight into track 2, the overture to 'The Phantom of the Opera'. Wow! The rest of the cd also features 'creepy' music from various sources, such as Alfred Hitchcock films, like Psycho, various classic works like Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Night on Bald Mountain', and also some other creepy sound effects. A good album not only for Halloween but I dare you to listen to it during a dark night with a thunderstorm raging outside.
A real work-out for your system.............1999-12-11
I've owned the "Chiller" CD since it's release in '89. At the time, I was working for a local Audio/Video/Music dealer, and was looking for 'demo' CD's containing not necessarily heavy bass, but ones displaying incredible dynamic range, and sharp transient peaks. I already owned a copy of "Time Warp", also on Telarc, and was intrigued when I read about "Chiller. Needless to say, I was extremely pleased with this disc. Not only did I get a disc containing some great treatments of classics, but the re-make of the "Psycho" suite is wonderful (the shower sequence is very faithful to the original)! A word of warning.....the dynamic range of this disc is not to be underestimated.....I drove an older amplifier into thermal shutdown VERY quickly with track #1. I haven't tried it since I've upgraded my home system....hmmm....might have to scare the neighbors tonight (or at least rattle a few dental fillings)!
Great stuff!.......1999-10-09
This CD contains tons of great classic Halloween tunes. Even though the names might sound unfamiliar, you probably know most of the music on here through cultural osmosis. Heck, it's worth it just for "Funeral March of a Marionette" (the Alfred Hitchcock show theme.)

waxman is the man!.......2007-05-10
i love waxman's music. i think of his work in the same way i think of kurt weill's music. the melodies are so rich, so complex and the harmonies stir the soul. the diversity of musical genres both covered was also wide and rich.
but as much as love the gerhardt/rca recordings, i am not fond of the selection of works chosen to respresent waxman. it is good to know that there are many other cds of waxman's work out on the market to be found and appreciated.
but i do like the 'elegy for strings' from old acquaintance, the ' a place in the sun' suite and 'sunset boulevard'.
Nostalgia and then some.......2006-02-20
Many times the score makes the movie. In this case Franz Waxman Film Scores contributed well. However as a stand alone collection this really does not have a place other than a once in a while listen to remember the particular movies.
Each piece is preformed well by the National Philharmonic Orchestra. However I do not see situation for listening to this album. It does not make good driving musing or reading music, or just sitting and listening to music. This does have a place if you are collecting various composers' works.
The list includes:
Prince Valiant (1954)
A Place in the Sun (1951)
The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Old Acquaintance (1943)
Rebecca (1940)
The Philadelphia Story (1940)
Taras Bulba (1962)
Many of the scores are used again in later movies. You can hear scores of Franz Waxman in about three hundred movies.
Franz Waxman Tribute.......2005-10-12
This CD sounds splendid. It is very rich and moving. A PLACE IN THE SUN is beautiful. REBECCA is very pensive and very much what you may expect in a Hitchcock film. However, the best cut on this CD is from TARAS BULBA. What a piece of music. It is both rousing and inspirational. Outstanding!
Wonderful compilation of vintage Waxman.......2003-04-12
Charles Gerhardt was just the right conductor to revive these classic scores from the prolific film composer, Franz Waxman: His lush, melodramatic interpretations of the music do not fit every genre, but he feels right at home here with the sweeping melodies of the silver screen.
A good selection of Waxman's film music can be found here, including his most acclaimed, Sunset Boulevard. (It certainly has a sparkle that Joel McNeeley's recent rerecording seemed to lack, even if the score is not present here in its entirety.) Other highlights are the stirring themes of Prince Valiant and the eerie and sinister tones of his score for The Bride of Frankenstein. A particular favourite of mine is Rear Window, sadly absent here, though to my knowledge only one recording exists (Lalo Schifrin and the San Diego Pops, Hitchcock: Master of Mayhem): Fans can take solace in the fact that one of the Rear Window tunes appears here in its earlier form as we heard it in A Place in the Sun.
If you are a film music buff, this is definitely worth a place in your collection. Gerhardt captures the essence of Waxman perfectly.
Franz Waxman's Music is Magic.......2001-10-02
This CD is a wonderful place to start your collection of Franz Waxman film music.
Waxman's sense of melodic line and tasteful harmonies are masterful. Of particular note are his suites from Prince Valiant, and The Bride of Frankenstein (also used in the old Flash Gordon serials). Charles Gerhardt does a fine job conducting this wonderful collection of jems.

original soundtracks recordings from classic horror.......2007-05-01
If you are a classic horror film buff, like me, you'll love this CD containing ORIGINAL soundtrack recordings from the films. Taken from isolation tracks from the masters ( that means music and sound effects only, no dialogue), this is the only CD I know of that has the music directly from the films, NOT re-recorded! Ok, some tracks definitly show their age, but fascinating to listen to none the less. The wolf man is probably the strongest and most recognizable of the tracks, but once you start listening, all those dark, creepy Saturday nights watching Creature Features will come back to you...wonderful!

Waxman.......2007-05-22
I received the Franz Waxman Vol.1 in the mail and although the music is excellent, the tracks are all wrong. When I ordered Vol. #1 it clearly stated on the track list that track #1 is Anne of the Indies and track #7 is Possessed, but when I got the cd in the mail track #1 is Task Force and all the other tracks are different as well......what's going on here, can someone tell me? I would like to at least get the correct music on the cd I ordered.

OK if you don't mind music between the lines.......2002-02-13
Several months ago I bought this series' release of "The Third Man" soundtrack and was a little startled to find that I had bought a recording of that movie's music as it is heard in the movie--actors' dialogue and all. This is a product I suppose I could make for myself if I could figure out the white, red, and yellow plugs on the back of my VCR and audiotape decks. There is something to be said, however, for having somebody do it for you; and I do enjoy hearing the music as it was originally scored and performed, dramatic noise notwithstanding. And so, forewarned, I picked up this recording of "Frankenstein" and "Bride of Frankenstein." I think it's worth the money and great to listen to. The last cut is the Bride of Frankenstein "suite"--which from the sound of it was a contemporaneously recorded pastiche of the themes from the film's score, and as far as I know not available anywhere else. The cuts from "Frankenstein," of course, are heavily dialogue-ridden, as that 1931 movie contained no "soundtrack" or "score" per se, but only some cues from the Universal library, and very few of them at that. The "Bride of Frankenstein" cuts take up the lion's share of the album, including the aforementioned Suite. This is a very similar product to the Rob Zombie- produced "Words and Music of Frankenstein." It lacks the "Son of Frankenstein" music found on the Zombie disc, but contains a much more complete sampling of the "Bride of Frankenstein" score, as well as--again--that nifty Suite. If you're like me and just have to listen to Franz Waxman's original performances of his "Bride" score, this CD is well worth it. After a few listenings you'll no longer regard the dialogue as an interruption; you might even enjoy it (get the 1993 re-recording of Waxman's "Bride," though, so you have some recourse to pure music). The CD's packaging is nice, but the liner notes contain only basic information about the movies, and--strangely--not a word about the music.
