The Story of Us (1999 Film) [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
If you were scoring a romantic dramedy directed by Rob Reiner and starring Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer as a couple looking over 15 years of marriage, would you not think of Eric Clapton? Of course you would. Rob Reiner did. His pithy liner notes explain just why Clapton's laid-back, fashionably impeccable take on the modern blues matched with his smoky, everyman voice makes for the perfect backdrop as wine glasses clink and romance hangs in the balance. The instrumental work is carefully fingerpicked (and often very brief--most tracks are less than a minute), but the most eventful moment remains the opening cut, "(I) Get Lost/Main Title." A live edit of "Wonderful Tonight" from 1991 is added as a bonus, although it doesn't appear in the film. Things are rounded off by several other contributors, most notably Teddy Wilson's "The Sheik of Araby" and the Andrew Sisters' "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree," which add a sense of old-time romance to the modern situation. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Customer Reviews:
This is a very unusual cd, buy it and you will see why.............2000-09-20
This cd is a little different from most. Let me explain! This cd has a great mixture of several types of music. This cd features popular, classical, sacred, and wedding music. What a treat it is to have all these beautuful songs together on one cd.
The main concern I have for this cd is the fact that some of the arrangements were not up to par. As you will see, all songs are not ideal for harp arrangements. I liked about half of the songs performed on this cd. I feel like the song selection could have been a little bit better. If that had happened, I think this would have been an outstanding cd.
I Would Like To Recommend This Cd

FIVE STAR COLLECTION.......2005-06-22
Lee Perry has already been the source of an excellent three disk retrospective, Island's ARKOLOGY. One must wonder how much would be leftover for this four disk set. Lots. I AM THE UPSETTER provides a vivid portrail of the eccentric Reggae producer/artist/singer, that may even illuminate his work more than the already stellar ARKOLOGY collection. While ARKOLOGY provides most of the higher profile songs that Perry was involved with (JUNIOR MURVIN-POLICE AND THEIVES, MAX ROMEO-WAR INNA BABYLON, ETC), this set delves deeper into Perry's work, including more of his early solo work and numerous rare sides, as well as a number of his "hits" not included in the earlier set (THE WAILERS-SMALL AXE, I AM THE UPSETTER and PEOPLE FUNNY BOY by LEE PERRY, CURLY LOCKS, BEAT DOWN BABYLON-JUNIOR BYLES).
The set also seperates the dub tracks into an intoxicating single disk, that shoud please any Perry fan. This highlights the amazing sounds that Perry was able to get out of basic four track production. He weilded a low-fi studio like a true virtuoso. It also includes a taste of the fine work that Perry performed with the Wailers, just as the band was finding it's true voice (Check out AFRICAN HERBSMAN by the Wailers for the whole story).
I would not recommend this instead of ARKOLGY, but as an excellent companion piece that should create the cornerstone in any serious Reggae fans collection. Though there are a few overlaps in the two, they both are essential and I highly recommend them both.
* FOUR DISCS! ESSENTIAL!! BRILLIANT!!! *.......2005-06-16
Quality and quantity reign on this mind-blowing set. First of all, Lee "Scratch" Perry truly is a musical genius, and all the proof is here. This four disc set gives a comprehensive, compelling overview of Perry's golden years, displaying a wide range of artists and styles in a carefully organized manner. We are treated to many Scratch solo works, as well as plenty of wildly creative production for other artists. We see Scratch's production talents grow from brilliant to absolutely mind-blowing (check out the eight minute "City Too Hot," for example). There is an entire disc devoted to highlighting Perry's dub works, but there is even more great dub spread throughout the entire collection, and Perry's work is profoundly creative and engaging no matter what the medium. Here we have dub, roots reggae, soul, rocksteady/proto-reggae, grooving instrumentals, and all-around wild, unbridled sonic creativity.
The packaging here is beautiful, and the liner notes (really a small hardcover book) are thoroughly researched and enlightening. There is overall commentary on Perry's career, as well as information and commentary for each individual track, and also historical perspective for the musical styles and formats represented. Importantly, sonic quality is absolutely excellent, usually improving significantly upon tracks which are duplicated on existing releases. The price is almost ridiculously low.
I unreservedly and enthusiastically recommend this set to Perry beginners and experts alike. Long story short, this is absolutely essential Upsetter music. Thank you, Trojan Records.
Get it!

THE MSG STORY LIVE (MSG).......2006-11-26
What a great double CD just like it says MSG story live is exactly what you get it has a lot of great songs the audio & the video are great I know this came out on VHS before I got it from the MSG fan club when it was still active, but now is on DVD and available to get it,any MSG fan must get both the CD & DVD,there's allways gonna be a negative review here and there but the majority wins anyway,I recomend this CD & the DVD,the name of the DVD is MSG live in Tokyo 1997 tour and it has a bonus concert from the UNFORGIVEN tour 2000 check it out!
I expected more..........2006-05-12
Michael Schenker is much of the air that I breathe. I really appreciate his music in my life. So I own every stupid thing he has recorded, minus a few compilations because, let's face it, who really needs 6 copies of Rock Bottom or Armed and Ready?
I was surprised to find this on my store's shelves back when it came out and, of course, I jumped on it. But when I played it, it sounded to me like Michael assembled a band strictly for the purpose of playing one song from every album. And what he got was a band that is very technically proficient, but not very rockin.' Ridiculously, I can't even remember the singer's name because I got very tired of hearing him before the first CD was over. Then I watched the VHS that was released from this tiny tour and got tired of him even earlier. Now, if anyone deserves accolades for their career achievements, and an accompanying career retrospective,it's Michael Schenker. But this concert sounds lifeless. There's just no feeling in it. And it bothers me because I don't enjoy listening to it. You know what I like about it? The many tiny little pictures of Michael that span the years. If you're a Schenker fan you will buy it anyway. And this CD is a reflection of the video version, which is equally hard to watch. Again, I LOVE Schenker, so I'm sorry to say these things. But if it doesn't rock in your car, it won't rock anywhere. But, buy everything else he has put out! Umm, except maybe Arachnophobiac.
Best Live cd .......2005-12-23
For my money this is the best live cd for sound, performances and song selection that MSG has ever done.
Stunning, precise and surprising...........2005-07-30
Well, usually I don't like compilations at all, be them live or not. But I do LOVE Michael Schenker's playing. It's unique. It's magic. It has feeling, speed and precision, all in the same package.
So , naturally I picked up this album. I was astonished. I was surprised. It offers you THIRTY songs! It showcases Michael's great spam of different musical phases. Ok, we all know the guy made some incredibly stupid business decisions (or lack of decisions), that he changed band members like he was changing shirts, that he had a serious drinking problem, that he sometimes has a bad temper. But nothing of it can take away the merit of this recording, this breathtaking live album with a solid line up. Shane Gaalaas and Barry Sparks form a rhythm section that will astonish the listener, and Michael is as sharp as ever.
It's a great album, If you have ner listened Schenker, this is a good place to start. Oh, by the way, to reviewer Alexander T. Newport, you just showed how much prejudice you have against old people, how narrow minded you are, attacking Michael's age and playing, specifically in this album, when he sounds more fresh than ever.
A Noble Effort But A Mediocre Result.......2004-08-10
This package contains some good performances recorded in Japan in 1996. My favorites are: In Search Of Peace Of Mind, Another Piece Of Meat, and All The Way From Memphis. But, to be perfectly blunt, the performance quality of the 80's MSG & 70's UFO songs does not measure up to the bitchin & electrifying quality found on at least 5 other currently available albums & box sets that feature concerts from the 70's & 80's. This is not to say that Schenker sounds like crap; he plays quite well, he sounds well-rehearsed, but the youthful exuberance is gone. The hunger, the eye-of-the-tiger, it's gone, man. His fingers don't move as quickly as they used to. The intensity level during his solos is significantly less than it was in the 70's & 80's. And I figure it has everything to do with age. Afterall, hotshot, blistering, metal-licious guitar soloing is a young mans sport. The way Schenker played in his heyday is like listening to some incredible audio-acrobatics. I don't think most Hard Rock fans realize how amazing Schenker was. It wasn't just the fact that he could play fast & precisely, it was the fact that these beautiful, unique, gut-grabbing note-constructions sped from his mind to his fingertips, dig? His mind was lightning-fast and bursting with melody & Hard Rock sensibility. But not on this album.
Right, and now to the vocals: Most of them are sung by David Van Landing. He's a decent sounding vocalist with a strong voice and he does an admirable job of singing. But he ain't no Gary Barden or Phil Mogg and you're reminded of this with every word he sings.
As for the other vocalist, he isn't even worth mentioning by name. He sounds like someone who would sing in a band like Whitesnake. The dude ain't got no metal or edge to him whatsoever. He's just a poser.
I'll grant you that my tastes are perhaps too critical, but do yourself a favor and check out the following albums first before you buy this one: Strangers In The Night, One Night At Budokan, Rock Will Never Die, Back To Attack, and Reactivate Live. I don't mean to alarm you, but listen, your time is running out so you may as well hear the best stuff first.

I was very pleased with this product, my sister recently got married and I was responsible for the music.... I am happy that I made this selection, everyone was happy with the music chosen for the ceremony, I would recommend it to any one looking for wedding music
A wedding minister's review.......2000-01-16
I just love this album. I am a wedding minister and many couples ask me about music for their ceremony. I am happy to recommend they buy this album for a wonderful selection of wedding music both traditional and contemporary performed by orchestras, keyboardists, harpists and others including a lovely soprano. One disc is traditional wedding selections and the other is contemporary. The selections are arranged in the order of a ceremony with choices for each part of the ceremony. The CD would be appropriate to use in a wedding if live music is not planned. I plan to add a link to this site from my website just so couples can check this album out for themselves.

Album Description
The debut recording of the Nathaniel Dett Chorale features the most enduring songs of inspiration, hymns, and arrangements of spirituals by the choir's namesake, Canadian composer R. Nathaniel Dett. Brainerd Blyden-Taylor is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Nathaniel Dett Chorale.
Nathaniel Dett was born in Drummondville, Ontario in 1882 and died in October, 1943. Nathaniel Dett was dedicated to the cause of Black music, winning the Bowdoin and Frances Boott prizes in 1920 from Harvard University for his paper, "The Emancipation of Negro Music" and for his motet, "Don't Be Weary Traveller".
The Nathaniel Dett Chorale is Canada's first professional choral group dedicated to Afrocentric music of all styles including classical, spiritual, gospel, jazz, folk and blues. The Chorale is comprised of classically trained, multi-faceted vocalists whose work stretches beyond the traditional expectations of a classical chamber choir, and seeks to challenge us to broaden our vision to include all styles and genres of music as appropriate to the traditions of the African Diaspora.

Kick off your shoes and wind down..........2003-02-01
I'm such a sucker for a good soundtrack. This cd is slow and great for winding down... It's encourages reflection, I think... Great for relaxing and zoning out...
It's mostly instrumental by Eric Clapton... And the biggest plus for me is that it has "Classical Gas" on it, second to the end... Which I just LOVE!! I can watch the movie The Story of Us over and over, just to see the 'flashback' scene near the end of the movie which has "Classical Gas" playing in the background. I cry every time... In a good way...
I'm so impressed, and very glad I bought it. I think anyone who needs to relax as much as I do, could appreciate this cd.
Soft and Smooth.......2001-07-30
When I first saw the trailers of this movie some time back, I wasn't much interested in the film as much as the music that was playing during the preview. That song kept on haunting me. I knew what it was, but I just could not pin point out what it was exactly. That piece was Classical Gas by Mason Williams. I had heard the Asian violist Vanessa Mae play her version of the song in her debut album. The song itself worked on so many levels. I just wanted to buy the album just because of that very song.
Time passed by and I completely forgot about a movie called the Story of Us. I just knew it didn't do too well in the box office when it was released. Two years later, I had the chance of seeing it and experiencing the music of it all. Eric Clapton succeeds in creating the right temp to the movie's theme about love lost and break up and then the realization that feeling in love is not like being in love. You can never severe the connection between being in love. And Clapton captures that in the soundtrack of this movie.
The music is soft. It's heart warming. The highlight of it could very well be Clapton's two songs. The established "Wonderful Tonight" and the original version of "I Get Lost". The latter song means a great deal to me and it is the song that at times of wrong and anger with my loved one brings us back together again. Clapton sings it with such ease that anyone emulating him is able to do so. This is a personal song and can be sung out by anyone, anywhere to his loved one and still not sound cheesy. The last piece of music in the album is so sad and yet hopeful that you just want to listen to it again and again. Clapton truly knows the magic of playing the guitar just right to justify your emotions and that of the movie.
And what about Classical Gas? The song is really well done. A great many did not like it because it's of a different style. Though it is, you should bear in mind that the song is incorporated in a soundtrack and plays on the same level of the movie itself. It delves with the theme of lost love and heartache. In the end, it is the right piece to play when you think of your life and past moments. This is the song to play after 15 years of marriage. This is the song that defines the Story of Us.
An Eric Clapton CD with 2 songs that don't belong.......2000-09-24
This is a good CD--I read the other reviews before purchasing it. The "Classical Gas" track is not the same as the one used in the movie, but still enjoyable. I do not like the tracks that have somebody humming along with the instrumental--it is annoying. Also, the Teddy Wilson song & the Andrews sisters song I could do without. Basically the CD is comprised of the main track by Eric Clapton repeated in different length snippets. Since I like Eric Clapton, I liked the mellow guitar instrumentals. Except for skipping a couple of the tunes you can enjoy the whole thing straight through.
Awesome with a CAPITAL A.......2000-07-19
This soundtrack is great! My girlfriend had it and she thought I would like it. Being a guitar player, I really appreciated this album. There are lots of great songs from the movie that sound some what like whats on Eric Clapton's unplugged CD. There are lots of other great songs too. Truely a CD you can pop in and listen the whole way through!
I LOVED it. Others may not digest it so well however........2000-06-05
Some people have really slammed this CD but I love it. Being a guitarist myself, I was hoping the soundtrack had the song snippets from the movie. And it does! If you're expecting radio formatted 3 to 5 minute singles, you'll be disappointed. But if you truly loved the simple, beautiful guitar arrangements Clapton did in the movie, you'll like this CD. The only other warning is there are only 3 different guitar arrangements repeated throughout the CD with subtle differences. I can see where this would turn a lot of people off. But I REALLY loved those 3 arrangements so I was happy to hear them repeated throughout the CD.

Frost's strongest album.......2002-04-24
Okay, Frost must have, what, like seven albums by now? This is the hottest of all of them. That's not to say that he hasn't grown as an artist, because he has. But East Side Story gives you joint after joint, bam, firme rola tras firme rola, this record is no joke. The order of the songs makes a sort of a story--a lot of rappers try to make a movie or whatever, but Frost pulls it off. (Check the movie reference of the title and the little story he makes with the song titles on the back of the record jacket.) The only complaint I have about Frost is that he doesn't kick that many raps in Spanish, sino prefiere meter una suerte de Spanglish en la letra de todas sus canciones, pero hey, si así es como habla el vato, quién soy yo para quejarme. Pase lo que pase tiene skills. You're not likely to mix up his voice with that of some other rapper. Fuhgeddaboudit.
