Big Bad Love [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Based on the collection of short stories by Mississippi writer Larry Brown, actor Arliss Howard's directorial debut evokes a bittersweet Southern landscape of broken dreams, artistic ambitions haunted by alcoholic visions, and the toll they take on three generations of his character's family. Given the film's emotional and geographic landscape, it's hardly surprising to find its soundtrack deeply steeped in the blues. What distinguishes this collection is its compelling dichotomy, being as emotionally complex as it is musically spare. Though many of the coterie of late-discovered Mississippi Delta bluesmen at the soundtrack's core (R.L. Burnside and sideman/protégé Kenny Brown, Asie Payton, T-Model Ford, Robert Belfour, Junior Kimbrough) are 70-something, they're often showcased in raw-rhythmed live recordings whose gritty, evocative sense of humanity spans generations. That's especially true of Burnside's all-star take on Bob Dylan's "Everything Is Broken," which includes James Cotton, Buddy Guy, Teenie Hodges, and Kenny Brown. Equally gratifying is the way the album underscores the blues' deep influences on others, including Steve Earle's bleakly heartfelt original version of "Goodbye" and two tracks each by Tom Waits ("Long Way Home," "Jayne's Blue Wish") and Television's Tom Verlaine (the moody instrumentals "Sleepwalkin'" and "Spiritual," a stark, beautiful 2001 collaboration with the Kronos Quartet). --Jerry McCulley

Not My Style.......2007-05-11
This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!
Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28
For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.
Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16
This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.
Western Music.......2005-07-29
I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."
A great follow-up.......2003-08-29
This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Great Southern Blues.......2004-01-01
This soundtrack is definitely a recommendation for someone who hasn't fully come to appreciate the South's blues era. Although most of the tracks are modern blues, they still have the essence of what the Deep South is and was back in the early 20th century. This cd is great for young indie fans looking for something new and different, and also for middle-aged music lovers that want something new other than their John Mayell and Eric Claptom blues.
Nice lineup but there's one missing.......2003-09-10
It's a damn shame the one band that could have made this album a real classic was left off. Slobberbone's the band. How could it have happened? However, the soundtrack doesn't lack diversity; it could just use some strengthening.
Perfect Delta.......2003-07-02
This is what the blues is about. A combination of old and new voices contribute to a perfectly pitched record. I came to this through Tom Waits. I love his music and wanted to hear these two tracks. I thought I might pull them off and move on. Now I can't imagine braking up the beautiful dynamic the whole record holds. I always liked R.L. Burnside. Now I love him. R.L., Junior, Asie, T-Model Ford, the Toms all fit together like they were all born in the same southern town. This soundtrack will definately get passed on by word of my mouth to my friends and co-workers.
Outstanding Contemporary Blues.......2002-09-14
First of all, I would like to say that this is undoubtedly one of the finest soundtracks that I have ever heard. I would rank it with 'The last Tango in Paris' and Peter Gabriel's 'Birdy,.
It is also perhaps the finest collection of contemporary blues that I have ever heard ...... R.L.Burnside and Junior Kimbaugh. You have got to love it! In addition there is some fine work by Tom Verlaine .... someone who remains overlooked as a monumental musical talent. My hat is off to whoever is responsible for this highly satifying disc.
THE BLUES AND BIG BAD LOVE GO HAND IN HAND.......2002-04-10
One of my biggest pet peeves with motion picture soundtracks is the fact that there is never enough original music on it to capture the moods and themes of the movies particular plot and the characters personalities. The soundtrack to Big Bad Love however is a refreshing change. With original songs from the legendary Tom Waits, Tom Verlaine & Steve Earle this soundtrack easily makes me think of the southern back woods and how simplistic life should be.
You don't have to be a blues aficionado to appreciate the fluidity of this album and the craftsmanship of the songs these artists create. By combining different elements of the blues, whether it's Mr. Waits signature raspy voice or R.L. Burnside's storytelling this soundtrack will make road trippin all the worth while. The biggest surprise however is the collaboration of Tom Verlaine and the Kronos Quartet. The soupy feel it evokes makes the listener's mind wander and feel more at ease.
