Ridley Scott's quirky tale of a smalltime con-artist coming to terms with his rediscovered daughter sprawls across landscapes both internal and external, from the twitchy neuroses of Nicolas Cage's character Roy to the kitschy San Fernando Valley furnishings and architecture he insulates them with. Hans Zimmer's soundtrack deftly colors them both with retro-quirky, infectious charm, a welcome left turn from the moody dramaturgy that has been so often demanded of the composer. Roy's living-in-the-past ethos inspires some smart catalog choices, from Bobby Darin's breezy take on "The Good Life" and George Formby's ukulele romp "Leanin' On a Lamp Post" to prime 60's cuts by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass and Mantovani's cocktail lounge staple, "Swedish Rhapsody." Zimmer's jazz-exotica dominated score bobs and weaves its way merrily through those dizzy inspirations, throwing in a little accordion seasoning and several healthy dollops of Nino Rota's La Dolce Vita theme in the bargain, before throwing us back headlong into the jarring rhythms of the 21st century's digital cacophony. A fresh, loopy change of pace from one Hollywood's most successful -- if too often pigeonholed -- composers. -- Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Quirky, weird, unsually fun to listen too.......2005-07-26

Hans zimmer is one who likes to suprise the listeners. For example after doing big action movies he does As good as it gets, more action movies, some drama, animated etc... Spanglish.

Here with matchstick men he creates a quirky jazz score that it is not only fun to listen BUT FUN TO LISTEN TOO. He uses the traditional cliche with the accordion but doesn't overkill it. This score starts quirky (reflecting Roy's personality), involves more strings - emotional (reflects Roy's relationship with his daughter), then serious (reflects the con gone wrong).

The song by Bobby Darin is like Frank sinatra but better. The spanish tracks are fun to listen to.

Overall 4 and a half stars

3 out of 5 stars missing songs.......2005-04-18

I was missing the song that plays when ROY and ANGELA are at the bowling alley. For you guys, this is "More than this" from Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music.

There are other songs missing too...

But overall, it's good.

4 out of 5 stars A quirky hidden gem.......2005-04-05

Though reviews were decidedly mixed, I flat-out loved the movie matchstick men. I found it a refreshingly entertaining and intelligent break amid the waves of brainless summer movies. One aspect that really gave the movie an extra boost was the film's soundtrack. A wise selection of songs and instumental pieces, along with Hans Zimmer's delightful score gave the movie just the right feel. Oftentimes, Zimmer's score is played at a low volume in the film, so you're not able to notice what's going on. I fully expected the soundtrack album to focus on the movie's songs and forget about the score entirely. Delightfully, the release gave us nearly all of the score, as well as some of the best songs and instrumental pieces. Regarding the score, it's quite different from anything Zimmer's done, which is beginning to become a bit of an oxymoron these days, considering his resume in the past few years. He fully employs a wide variety of odd instruments (most notably the accordian) along with a small orchestral ensemble. Drawing heavily from the sound of Nino Rota (particularly his work on "The Godfather"), Zimmer creates a quirky, jazzy, romantic, and at times slightly dark atmosphere. The two songs and four instrumental pieces blend right in, the Bobby Darin number that opens up the album is a particular highlight. The only piece that sounds out of place is the techno score track near the end, but it's supposed to sound out of place. The piece represents Nicolas Cage's character being thrown out of his quaint little world of tics into a sudden scene of real-world intensity. Overal, the album is a very pleasant and enjoyable listening experience, highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Soundtrack.......2004-07-29

The only reason i'm writing this review is to ask, what's that music played during Roy's and his daughter's dance on the night club. I think it's an 80's music, but i can't remember the name of it. Well i dind't bought the soundtrack, so im not sure if it is on it. But for what i heard in hte movie, i'm sure i'm going to buy it.
