This is a dazzling recital, taped live at Carnegie Hall in November 2003--complete with applause. Lang Lang's virtuosity is almost frightening: the Liszt "Reminiscenses du Don Juan" is a showpiece when played "normally." Here, Lang plays it to its extremes, with soft passages amazingly soft and subtly delineated and the bigger moments heaven-thundering. And it is played so fast, and so accurately (a cascade of notes in mid-"La ci darem la mano" sounds like a waterfall), that it leaves the listener breathless--surely just what Liszt wanted. In a Haydn sonata, Lang's classical line is impeccable, but he's not afraid to shine through the music and embellish occasionally. The Schumann "Traumerei" is suitably dreamy and hushed; Schubert's "Wanderer" Fantasy, a real crowd-pleaser, is just that--beautifully played, familiar yet fresh sounding. And an encore, with Lang's father playing a two-string fiddle called the erhu, is a fascinating look into Eastern music. There's more (this is a 2-CD set), and it's stunning--and highly recommended for all admirers of great piano playing. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Worst Wanderer Fantasy EVER?.......2007-02-14
I can't believe the positive reviews this recording has gotten. Don't believe the hype folks; Lang Lang may have technique to burn, but most 1st-year conservatory students possess at least the same interpretive depth, if not more. When he isn't indulging himself in interpretive excess, then Lang Lang is playing as if he really doesn't care much at all.
His Schubert is garbage. Let him stick to playing Chinese compositions unknown to Western audiences, because virtually none of us will have any way of drawing comparisons between his interpretation and that of others. I can only assume that his interpretation of Dun Tan is the definitive version --- but I doubt it.
Pianistic Glory at its best!!!!.......2006-11-07
Wow!!
I have read several of the 'negative' reviews here and can only conclude (after viewing the DVD four times and counting) that what may be going on with these folks is something they themselves simply don't understand (about themselves!). They cannot or will not accept that here with Lang Lang, as with Evgeny Kissin (ever notice?) the world is being introduced to the next and even greater generation of pianistic virtuosos, young prodigies who can do everything that Horowitz and even Lizst ever did and more... I have no doubt those two would agree were they alive today. Karajan wept (for joy)when he heard the young Kissin perform Chopin's Fantasy in F# minor, Mehta was so taken with Kissin's performance under his baton that he could not refrain from hugging the young boy after a stellar performance... Andre Watts, not often praising his contemporaries, mused about finding the nearest bridge to jump off after hearing Kissin play realizing he was not in the same league and one other recent winner of an International Competition had to pull his car over to the side of the road, he was so taken with Kissin.... yes, I know it seems like I forgot we are talking about Lang Lang.... Lang Lang can do everything Kissin can and maybe more...Are we to believe that these aforementioned individuals are musical idiots prone to such actions?!!
Folks! accept it, embrace it and thank God for it!... just as he did when simultaneously brought Chopin and Liszt to our world in the early 1800's (they were the same age except for a year) He has now given us another Double Blast of Pianistic Glory in Kissin and Lang Lang! Pity those who can't get beyond their envy, jealously, general jadedness with life... or whatever ails them... they need help, lots of help!
As for me and many like me (BTW, it doesnt count for much but I am a pianist myself)... we are so grateful and blessed to have these 2 young men and the miracle of DVD technology to bring their concerts right into our living room!
An outstanding performance and story of a child prodigy.......2006-06-14
Lang Lang has the charm of an ebullient child as he plays the piano. I have never seen a pianists enjoy himself with such gay abandon, a delight that lured me into a space of complete attention. I sat with a smile on my face thoughout most of the performance. However, his wonderful performance air was only second to his pianism. You will gasp in awe during Reminiscenses de Don Juan. Lang Lang conveys powerful energy though the piano without losing the delicate touches and grace. The skill is a contradiction that few virtuosos have. Bravo!
Most Impressive!.......2006-05-18
When I first heard Lang Lang on the Internet, I thought he only played fast. When I heard him again (this time live), I thought, wow! He really is amazing! Lang Lang was born in 1982 in Shenyang, China. He started piano at the age of three, and played in his first public recital at age 5. He studied piano with many teachers. I love piano, too. Although I am not going to be like him, I must say that he is one of a kind. When he plays, he doesn't just play. He feels it, too, and uses his body to show his different emotions. And he's only 23!
Trust the peanut gallery? Or trust experts. Your choice ..........2006-01-05
o Lang Lang. German Echo Klassic 2004 Award Winner. Best Pianist.
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echo_Klassik
o About this Carnegie Hall recording? The one given some pretty bad reviews from the peanut gallery? Well, the recording won a 2005 Amadeus Austrian Music Award. And a DVD of this recital with documentary footage won the 2005 "Music DVD of the Year" Echo Klassik Award.
Music has always been interpretive and a vital mark of virtuosity is having your own voice - Lang has his own voice and he masterfully distinguishes himself with it. Lang is a refreshing draft of fresh air in a typically stagnant arena. Technically, the kid can flat out play. Period. Interpretively, he is bold, unafraid, and lets it all hang out.
Nuff said ...
Cheers!

The years 1975 and 1976 mark a hard turn in the life and career of George Jones. After an extraordinary commercial and artistic run, Jones's marriage to Tammy Wynette collapsed for good, his substance abuse verged on the deadly, and most of his singles charted poorly. At the same time, Jones collaborated with Billy Sherrill for two emotionally potent, incessantly graceful albums. Recorded in the immediate aftermath of Jones's divorce, Memories of Us is relentlessly dark, distinguished by the unbearably sad "A Goodbye Joke" and "What I Do Best," in which pathos becomes great art. Surrounded by Sherrill's often-breathtaking production, Jones's voice never sounded so plangent, so aching. The original album cover of The Battle is itself high theatre--a white bed, empty white boots, a framed portrait of Jones, spilled red roses--and the music inside is even more dramatic. "Love Coming Down" represents the perfect marriage of a grand confessional lyric and vocal genius, while David Allan Coe's "I Still Sing the Old Songs" seems to have been tailor-made for Jones's hard-country persona. Then there's the remarkable title track. The extended metaphor of "The Battle," in which satin gowns become armor and tears deadly weapons, would be absurd in most hands; yet the story of a marriage disintegrating into war, but somehow finding peace, becomes transcendent in the hands of Jones and Sherrill. That track, indeed the entire album, stands among the most moving and enduring work in the history of country music. --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
under-rated reissue collection.......2004-03-18
Koch Records released this double album CD in 1999. the albums should've been flip-flopped. "The Battle" came along in 1976, after "Memories of Us" in 1975 but on this CD the 1976 album is first. it's an under-rated reissue because i wouldn't have known about it if i hadn't been listening to an all-night AM trucker's show that was spotlighting it. it can't be found at your local record store...at least none around here. "The Battle" contains 7 songs ironically in a positive light, despite his personal relationship with Tammy going sour. only 3 songs, as described by the guy who wrote the liner notes, allow George to explore his personal problems, which were a staple in the Billy Sherrill era: "Wean Me", "I'll Come Back and Love You Again", and "Love Comin' Down". the album cover of the Battle is not your typical one either. but in 1975-1977, George couldn't seem to do anything right in the eyes of the industry and these two solo albums reveal 20 songs that the public has forgotten about since his duet career with Tammy and later, Johnny PayCheck, over-shadowed his solo efforts in the late '70s. what a shame! "I Just Don't Give a Damn", which is track 20, is one of my all-time favorites! some have said that the song is full of self-pity...but i think the song is a study of a man whose own defiance and pride doesn't allow him to give in and mend the relationship with the woman even though he wants to because in the song he sings "if you should ever want to call me, i'll be on my side of town" letting us know that he's willing to compromise but he re-states his stance by concluding "but don't call tonight 'cause i still don't give a damn" ...one of the best songs he's ever done in my opinion. the "Love Comin' Down" song on the other hand, i was introduced to by way of Conway Twitty who recorded it on his 1979 CROSS WINDS album on MCA...i grew up with Conway's version and love it but i also love George's version too! "Bring on the Clowns" is outstanding. "What I Do Best" is a classic to me, with the great lines: "they say that every man has given talent; but if hurtin' is a talent then i know that i've been blessed"; and "i've lost in love but in sadness i've been successful and i guess i finally found What I Do Best". "Baby, There's Nothing Like You", "You Always Look Your Best Here in My Arms", "A Touch of Wilderness", "The Night Time and My Baby", and "A Goodbye Joke" are all great. about the only weak song, if you want to call it that, is "She Once Made a Romeo Cry". George's performance of "I Can't Get Over What Lovin' You Has Done" is surprisingly romantic and gentle, like on "Love Comin' Down". "The Battle", his Top-20 hit from 1976 is of course a brilliant love song using military and war references. "Memories of Us" didn't do as well, peaking at #21 in 1975 {even though a #21 is a great peak position anyhow} but it's still a great song about a relationship gone bad. the album cover of "Memories of Us" was used for the 1994 box set "The Essential George Jones".
There's no one better than George Jones.......2001-10-29
This album really tells the true sadness George Jones went thru with his divorce and his drinking he was in a downward spril but I think his belief in himself and his music pulled him through and I'm sure Tammy was always there for him.
Two excellent George Jones albums.......1999-09-15
George Jones is always "good", often "very good" and sometimes "excellent". Memories Of Us (1975) and The Battle (1976) are both in the last category. George is at his vocal best all the way and the songs are strong. Especially the title tracks + "Love Coming Down" (also recorded by Elvis the same year; George is just as good) and "I Still Sing The Old Songs" (written by David Allen Coe). All of them should have been #1 hits. The albums are wonderfully produced by Billy Sherrill. He was a great producer for George.
nothing, but great.......1999-07-03
Anything Jones sings has got to be good. He's the greatest
Choices I've Made is going #1!.......1999-06-25
This song is one of the catchiest tunes we have heard in years. It would be played more often if a younger singer recorded it but, George proves he's not ready for the rocking chair yet! My wife hums that song all day long. Will buy the CD ASAP.

It has the sound of the original rather than the more modern versions. I relied on the reviews from other buyers before I purchased this and was not dissappointed.

Honky-Tonk Heaven.......2007-03-10
When Ray Price eventually shuffles off this mortal coil, he is a certainty to front heaven's Honky Tonk Angels. These two albums (Touch My Heart and Burning Memories) contain 23 superb expressions of broken hearts, broken dreams and tear-stained memories. I was suprised to find that Burning Memories was recorded before Touch My Heart as the former is more countrypolitan than the stripped-down, latter. I find the strings and backing vocals of "Memories" sometimes get in the way and overwhelm the essence of the songs. I much prefer the fiddles, steel, off-the-beat piano and tic-tac bass of "Heart". It makes the arrangements on "Heart" a bit samey but then too much of a good thing is never enough. Also, the nylon string guitar of Grady Martin on "Heart" is fantastic and the bass of the much under-rated Harold Bradley is the glue that holds many of these songs together. This is not to say that "Memories" is a bad album, it contains many beautiful moments but I cannot help but imagine what producer Roy Dea (of late, great Gary Stewart fame) would have done with these songs and the smooth voice of Mr Price. Overall, these two albums showcase one of the best voices in country music doing some of the best country songs with a host of great Nashville musicians. What more could you ask for? If the woman that you love has left you, you like country shuffles and enjoy a beer or two, then get this album, a box of beer to get that "done me wrong" feeling and a box of tissues to wipe away the ensuing tears. You'll soon be in heartbreak heaven.
Great - Great - Great - Just Great...!.......2007-03-05
Being a long time Ray Price fan, I can not tell you how overjoyed I am with this cd. All of my old time favs of his on one cd! If you love his oldies but goodies as much as me, then this is the one for you too. The seller shipped very quickly and my cd arrived in excellent condition. The only thing I would say about the shipping is the packaging envelope could be better. It is shipped in a cardboard wrapper that could end up damaged in the shipping/delivery process. I would recommend this company use the bubble wrap packaging.
Classic Ray Price - done two ways.......2006-07-14
I owned both of these albums back in the 60's (they're now long gone). After getting the re-release of Night Life awhile back, I could not resist purchasing this 2 album deal. It was well worth it. Being a singer and musician in Houston for 40 years now, I have always considered Ray Price my favorite country singer. He had the tremendous vocal range and vibrato with just enough "gravel" to show real emotion. Although most of his pop fame came in the 70's after "For the Good Times", I think his best vocal work was in the 60's. "Burning Memories" shows the predecessor to the 70's work, but the songs are so well performed that even "hard country shuffle finatics" cannot deny how good these songs are. "Touch my Heart" goes back to the typical shuffle tunes, but again, they are so well done that you have to marvel at his talent.
Burning Memories/Touch My Heart.......2005-09-30
It's a great CD and came along at the right time as I have played the long play records so many times they are about worn out.

Great Memories of Legion Stadium of the 50's.......2004-01-07
As someone who will soon turn 60 years old, I can totally relate to this CD. A friend gave me a copy of his CD and I now ordered 2 more as gifts. The friend who gave this to me is 71, he's more like a 17-year-old when this music plays. He was born and raised in East LA and I wasn't too far away.
These songs are great!
Bring Back The Memories.......2000-12-05
The El Monte Legion Stadium was located in a small suburb of Los Angeles and during its heyday of the fifties through 1960's was the venue for the best Rock & Roll shows in So. California. This disc features acts that have played El Monte during those years and some acts that simply sound like they should have headlined there. Most of these songs are taken from the record of the same name that was released in 1960 and produced by the legendary L.A. disc jockey Art Laboe. Laboe has also produced this CD with added tracks to give a feeling of spaning more years of El Monte stage shows. Art Laboe is also the originator of the "Oldies but Goodies" Lp's and probably the father of the phrase. This then is an "Oldies", recording in its truest form. Some of the acts were only known in the L. A. area, like Jim Balcom and Sonny Knight. Other acts were national Rock & Roll headliners like Billy Stewart and Earth Wind and Fire. If you remember "El Monte", or Art Laboe with his radio show from the drive-in where he played requests from teenagers as they sat in their cars after school eating hamburgers. If you are into "oldies", and are tired of the same old records on the radio, then pick this Cd for your collection.

Covers and highlights from a live album.......2005-03-30
Following the success of Gentleman Jim (a double CD containing all of Jim's big UK hits and many other classics), his British record company released this compilation. The first CD contains Jim's covers of songs made famous by others while the second CD is an edited version of his live album, On stage.
The covers show that, while Jim's roots were in country music, he recorded songs from a diverse range of sources. There are some country songs here, of course, including I fall to pieces (Patsy Cline), From a Jack to a king (Ned Killer) and Waiting for a train (Jimmie Rodgers). I can't stop loving you began as a Don Gibson country song though it is better known via the R+B cover by Ray Charles. Similarly, Fool such as I started as a Hank Snow country song but Elvis Presley made it into an international pop hit.
Goodnight Irene became an American top ten hit in 1950 for Jo Stafford, Frank Sinatra and the country super-duo of Ernest Tubb and Red Foley, but the Weavers and Gordon Jenkins had the biggest hit, spending three months at number one and selling over two million copies. Another song popular in 1950 was Mona Lisa, which also charted in America for several singers but Nat King Cole's version was the most popular.
Several songs here pre-date 1950 including Danny boy, Take my hand precious Lord, It is no secret, Have I told you lately that I love you, Moonlight and roses, Someday you'll want me to want you, over and It's only a paper moon. The continuing popularity of these songs is proof of their quality. Carolina moon also pre-dates 1950 (it dates from 1929) but will be forever associated with Connie Francis, who revived the song almost thirty years later.
Moon River became Andy Williams' theme song though it was never a hit for him. In the UK, the song was a number one hit for the unrelated Danny Williams. Memories are made of this (Dean Martin) and Roses are red (Bobby Vinton) are other covers of songs that were fairly new at the time Jim recorded them.
This is a fascinating and entertaining collection. If you already have a collection of Jim's hits (perhaps the double-CD I mentioned earlier) and want more of his music, you will surely enjoy this. If you haven't got such a collection, I recommend youstart with one of those before worrying about this.
The concert that vanished, great way to remember Jim Reeves........2004-07-22
This is an great double cd,a real treat for Jim Reeves lovers.Hear how great Jim was singing at concerts.
The bonus cd is the concert that was released on LP in 1968,here it is edited so there is little talking between songs.I gave it 4 stars out of 5,because the concert cd is edited.Main cd contains an unusal choice of songs, not the one you get on other cd`s.Buy it from the Amazon Uk division,it will be much cheaper that way.

5 plus stars for this great collection! I love love love it!.......2006-12-27
There are only 12 tracks on this cd, so it is kind of a short one for the Time Life Music "Classic Country" series, and the cover art on the cd doesn't match the others in the series, but "Country Memories" is one of my very favorites in the series. Every song is not just good, but great. Really great. I was surprised to find one of my all-time favorites, a very rare song "This Ole House" by Stuart Hamblen on this cd. This is truly an awesome old country song, and there is a fascinating story about how it was written on the leaflet inside, along with some really interesting country music history. "I Can't Stop Loving You" by Don Gibson, "He'll Have To Go" by Jim Reeves, "Detroit City" by Bobby Bare, "Green Green Grass of Home" by Porter Wagoner, "Make the World Go Away" by Eddy Arnold- what more can I say?

Good effort.......2001-08-25
Finally someone tries to offer hymns that are new to CD. Unfortunately, it suffers the tragic flaw of only having a small collection. This album is worth the buy for two reasons. Many of these songs are not located on the Gaither Collection. Secondly, the liner notes are written by the same man who wrote them Ernie's last album for Capitol, For the 83rd time. The notes provide a useful insight into the life and times, as well as the man itself.
Another great hymn CD from Ford.......2001-08-25
When the worst thing I can say about this CD is that it only has ten tracks, that is a good thing. On this CD, Tennessee Ernie Ford sings some of the most beautiful hymns ever written, and he does so as well as I have ever heard. For the person who loves these songs, the versions by Ford are absolutely not to be missed.
