Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25
First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.
It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23
Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."
His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.
For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.
Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.
He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.
Nostalgic.......2006-02-20
A great trip down memory lane. The selections sound just like I remember them from the movies and the radio. Enjoy
Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits.......2005-07-13
This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,
enjoy!!

Customer Reviews:
Lujon.......2006-05-23
Here is where the song "Lujon" (used last year to great effect) first appeared.
Mancini prided himself on his versatility and range. It is in full evidence here - and used as the soundtrack for a very forgettable TV series starring Ross Martin and John Vivyan (put those names in on Google and see what you get...).
Still, you gotta say that this was an amazing talent we had in Henry Mancini, and he is very much missed.
Mancini For Lucky Listeners..........2003-12-26
What we have here is a beautifully packaged French reissue of two classic Mancini LP's. The first, 'Mr. Lucky' is the brilliant and quirky music from the TV series of the same name. 'Goes Latin' only gives the 'Latin' treatment to the theme from 'Mr. Lucky', then goes off in it's own direction. In my opinion, the 'Latin' half is the real treasure, and the reason to buy this version instead of the plain 'Mr. Lucky' soundtrack (available elsewhere by itself.)
Of course, 'Mr. Lucky' has great cuts like the main theme, 'March Of The Cue Balls', and 'Chime Time', not to mention the eerie, beautiful and stunning 'Floating Pad' and the pointillistically insane 'Tipsy.' The 'Goes Latin' half really gets into some sonic gorgeousness, the kind that Mancini is known for and does best! 'Lujon', for instance, has a haunting sweeping string melody with some very cool downward chord changes. I think it's one of Mancini's classic cuts. 'Blue Mantilla' is another slow weeper, equally remarkable. And of course there's also Mancini's playful side, represented by cuts such as 'Rain Drops In Rio' or 'No-Cal Sugar Loaf'( ! )
Really. every cut on here is worthwhile for Mancini fans, lounge fans, or film music fans. These 'two-fer' reissues are worth what you pay, not only for the plethora of wonderful songs you get, but for the painstakingly reproduced liner notes, detailed lists of all the musicians, etc. Two lost treasures brought back to light!

HBO's pioneering series takes the dark carnival gambit of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes, drops it in the bleak heartland of Dust Bowl-era America and jolts it with a compelling undercurrent of Biblical apocalypse. That's no easy dramatic flux to musically evoke, but veteran TV composer Jeff Beal graces the show with cues that seamlessly fuse Appalachian folk traditions with a brooding, goth-inspired ambient gloom. The anxious solo fiddle of the show's theme is a repeating motif, one the composer uses to variously evoke melancholy ("Dora Mae's Funeral"), bittersweet romance ("Rita Sue and Jonesy") or supernatural wonders ("Ben Heals the Girl"). Beal's use of mournful solo horn (as on "Mark of the Beast") often heralds the show's undercurrent of Biblical doom, while his hesitant, haunting piano passages seem to hang in the air for eternity. The evocative cues here stand in stark contrast to the oft-quirky jazz cool of the composer's Emmy-winning work on Monk, ample tribute to Beal's masterful abilities to channel his musical instincts into even the most diverse dramatic material. --Jerry McCulley

HBO, you're idiots!.......2007-05-07
This was a great show, and the music is awesome. Haunting and wistful, it's great in the background when working or taking a bubble bath.
best part isn't even by jeff beal.......2007-03-04
the tone for the shows music was created by wendy melvoin & lisa coleman...the theme they created is the best part of this cd. too bad more of the original music from the first season wasn't included in this compilation. also, just a correction to a previous post; the people who designed the main titles won the emmy, the jeff beal.
"Carnivale" review.......2006-11-04

Solid Effort.......2007-02-08
Not his best album but is highly recommended - give a listen to "Circling Around the Moon", "Just Another Day", and "Large World Turning"
NOTE: Kenny Arnoff quit Mellencamp's band when Mellencamp and Junior Vasquez decided to remix over Kenny's original drum work when editing this album
A wonderfully different listening experience.......2005-12-06
Some albums sound like group of songs thrown together randomly. Some work together towards a story, like Tommy or Kilroy Was Here. But, this album is different than most. Mr. Happy Go Lucky is a collection of songs that have a sound that is different than what you hear with most modern rock, and they all hang together in a melodious way.
Overall, I found this to be a wonderfully different listening experience. The tunes are not toe-tapping pop music, but are enthralling, and make for a fascinating music session. I really enjoy this album, and give it my highest recommendations.
Totally underated.......2005-08-28
Persoanlly, I think this is the best Mellancamp album. Clearly John's brush with death (heart attack before this) left him focused and it shows in this album. Not your typical Mellancamp effort - many fans might be left somewhat confused and disappointed, but from a more objective perspective this might be his best album. Integrated and thematically consistent in a way that many of his others albums are not. One could think of this as his "Sgt. Pepper." Highly reccommended for anyone.
Happy Sound.......2005-07-28
On Mr. Happy Go Lucky, John Mellencamp teams up with producer Junior Vasquez for the most interesting sounding album of his career. By employing Mr. Vasquez, the songs have a hip-hop flavor and a dance floor beat. The album has a sonic resonance that adds a fuller sound to the songs. In that respect, the experiment works. The problem with the album is that the songs aren't up to Mr. Mellencamp's usual standards. There are a few excellent songs like "Just Another Day", "Jerry", "Jackamo Road" and "The Full Catastrophe". The rest of the songs are well produced, but they sound like he is more interested in the new sound than the songs themselves.

Disappointing followup to The Healer.......2003-03-13
John Lee Hooker provided some very basic but important music in his time. The Healer was a landmark album bringing John back to the fore with some good cuts which made up for his musical deficiencies. This album attempts to go down the same road but in general fails to achieve the same heights. The best tracks are 'Stripped me naked' with Carlos Santana and 'This is hip' with Ry Cooder. I prefer the original JLH cuts of the track on the album.
If you must have everything.......2001-07-11
Hooker's second album on the Pointblank label is a guest-heavy homage that doesn't have a great deal to do with John Lee Hooker as an artist and only occasionally plays to his strengths. Some cuts, such as the opening "I Want to Hug You" are just plain odd in their selection. This album is for the completist; sporadically enjoyable but unnecessary. The title cut is much better in its original version on "Urban Blues" (a somewhat chaotic but quite good album from the late '60s), while "Backstabbers" (actually "Backbiters and Syndicators", another remake from the same album) meanders too. The later cuts are better and, as usual, the fewer musicians playing with Hooker the less his sound gets mucked up. "Highway 13", "Father Was a Jockey" and yet another remake of "Crawlin' Kingsnake" are all quite nice. One wishes Hooker's late '80s and '90s producers more often had had the sense to leave him by himself or with minimal accompaniment. So, like all of Hooker's work on Pointblank, this is less about making a good album than honoring a lifetime of work. Still and all, worth having. His June 21st passing is greatly mourned.
All Star Cast.......2001-06-13
When one of the most revered blues guitarists asks for help on his album, there is no shortage of great talent to show up. The likes of Santana, Ry Cooder, Albert Collins, Johnny Winter, John Hammond, and Robert Cray (to name just a few) come out in support of "Mr. Lucky", the follow up guest album to "The Healing". But, John Lee Hooker doesn't need all of this talent to put out a great blues album.
Robert Cray shows up on the title cut of this album providing some great leads to Hooker's rhythm. A tune that makes Hooker "... feel a little better". Albert Collins steps in for "Backstabbers" providing a powerful presence that only he was capable of. All you have to hear is one note of Collins to know it's him. "I Cover the Waterfront" is a haunting tune with Van Morrison taking over the guitar work and Booker T. Jones on organ. Morrison's voice complements the low-boom of Hooker's. Another highlight is Santana's work on "Stripped Me Naked".
Hooker's Delta Blues sound is hypnotizing, and his deep voice is lazy and sweet. There are very few that have shaped the sound of music, especially the blues, as he has. This album, a tribute of sorts, is a must for blues lovers. To hear so much talent gathered in one place playing with a legend like Hooker gives me the chills.

Mr Lucky.......2007-05-13
Dave Grusins arrangements of Gershwin and his work with Lee Ritenour and Brasil artists is astounding. He makes everything so listenable! So here we have him arranging the great original works of Hank Mancini. The magic of both these great musicians is overwhelming. Henry wrote some great classics. Dave Grusin gives them a freshness that you will want to listen to over and over again.
Wife is happy now........2007-01-09
Wife had heard this CD on FM radio and secretly wrote it's name on slip of paper. I found it and got it for her for Christmas. "When mama is happy, everbody is happy."
Moonlight homage!.......2006-06-08
Dave Grusin made a very heartfelt homage in Henry Mancini `s memory with this striving album that deserves all your special attention.
If I had to find any motive of complaint around this invaluable CD is the few number of songs. Perhaps Moon river, Charade, and Sunflower could be arranged and included because these three themes were emblematic and definitive in the winning career of Mancini
The only hope I have is that Cruisin makes a second album. But this is fantastic entry to enjoy.
"Fresh, Interesting and Successful Music!".......2006-05-21
I remember collecting Mancini on vinyl when I was a kid. The phrase above was on one of the album covers.
I see Henry Mancini, in hindsight, as a classic example of how talent is consumer voraciously by the entertainment business. He enjoyed his success, to be sure, but it sucked everything out of him, too.
This album is distinguished by its final track though. First, I did not know that lyrics existed for "Soldier in the Rain," and wonder who wrote them. Second, to me, Grusin's choice of this track as the last depicted was no accident. Mancini was a devoted father and husband, and he wanted the best for his children, very much including his son. "That your someday child, never knows the rain."
Grusin's tribute to this great musician and composer is well-fitted and much welcomed.
Dave Grusin Plays Mancini . . . Two For The Road.......2006-01-17
Dave Grusin's greatest influence and inspiration in his musical career was Henry "Hank" Mancini, and he dedicated this album in memory of the legendary composer. When he was younger and trying to decide what road to take, he thought of the music of Henry Mancini and some other composers such as André Previn and Elmer Bernstein.
According to Dave Grusin, Hank Mancini was "as generous with advice and enthusiasm as anyone he had known in this arena, the whimsical good humor you hear in his music was there in real life as well."
Dave Grusin is joined by some of the finest studio musicians in creating one of the best Henry Mancini tributes: John Pattitucci (bass), Harvey Mason (drums), Russell Malone (guitar), Paulinho Da Costa (percussion), Tollak Ollestad (harmonica), Gary Grant (trumpet), Andrew Martin (trombone), Jerry Hey and the Hot Band, Dan Higgins, Tom Scott and Eric Marienthal (sax). Diana Krall did the vocals on "Dreamsville" and "Soldier In The Rain."
This is Henry Mancini music in smooth jazz, so typical of Dave Grusin's innovative and jazz-oriented arrangements and it presented not only his skills but also his dedication to piano playing.
It's an awesome CD to listen to and enjoy the music of Henry Mancini and the artistry of Dave Grusin. You'll be delighted with all the selections especially his terrific interpretations of "Moment To Moment," "Two For The Road," "Baby Elephant Walk" and "Days of Wine and Roses."
Very highly recommended.

Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Nothing in Randall Bramblett's resumé (Southern rockers Sea Level, sideman to Steve Winwood) will prepare you for the brilliance of No More Mr. Lucky. In the tradition of great Southern writers like Faulkner and Harry Crews, Bramblett melds God, Man, and Nature in a manner that is simultaneously laid-back and intense--only a Southern writer could write a song called "Sunflower" without making it effete. Too, it is unlikely that a Yankee would come up with such an obvious explanation of the Human Condition as: "First He made the mountains / Then He filled up the sea / He lost His concentration / Workin' on you and me." Bramblett tosses off such lines with wry sincerity but none of the precious self-consciousness often found in the singer-songwriter world. Add the 3-D production by John Keane that places the sound in front of your speakers rather than in them and you have a record that magnificently updates the soulful sound of the South. --Michael Ross

Most Underrated Songwriter in US delivers pure magic.......2007-04-06
Randall is without a doubt America's most underrated singer-songwriter. According to my humble opinion he's right up there with people like John Hiatt and James Tayor. And he's a respected multi-instrumentalist as well...playing with Sea Level from '77 till '80, Widespread Panic and Steve Winwood among others. But most important the man writes pure magic!!! Great lyrics (thoughtfull, at times spiritual words....food for the soul), great melodic songs that you keep singin' over and over again when you've heard them, great musicianship and his voice is a real treat too. All of his releases on New West Records: No More Mr. Lucky, Thin Places and Rich Someday are highly, highly recommended. People, give Randall Bramblett a chance, you won't regret it for a sec...
A killer recording.......2006-12-03
I have to say that I usually don't care for reviews that emphasize a CD's lyrics. Often that means that the singer is awful or there's no melody or imagination in the playing. And far too often the lyrics that are praised are in fact pedestrian, contrived, or else poetry that has nothing to do with the music. Well, in this case, I have to say that Randall Bramblett has hit it perfectly. His lyrics are as rich and true as his voice, and the music and lyrics are utterly inseparable. I think "God Was in the Water" may be the best rock lyric ever penned. It suggests more than it says and continues to sound fresh no matter how many times you listen to it. There's mystery and revelation in that song, and you're never sure where the line between them is. Not every song on the album is as strong--how could they be?--but "Get In, Get Out" is a close second. A little more deliberate and clever in the lyrics, which is not necessarily a good thing, but still a great song. Bramblett's voice is the perfect tool to deliver these songs, too, blending world-weariness and soul and suggesting simple truths arrived at by a long, tortuous (and torturous) path. I think the reviewer who suggested that this isn't for teens has the right idea. To really appreciate this music, you have to have made some bad mistakes in ugly places. But there is redemption here, not just pain, and there's peace and beauty, too. The whole affair is greatly helped by terrific production that underscores the songs' intent and adds its own interest without ever intruding. There's just enough strangeness in the sound to bring out the mystery in the lyrics. In some ways it reminds me of Dr. John's "Walk on Gilded Splinters," although the music and sound is quite different. There are a few songs that seem more like filler to me, at least in comparison to the better ones, but the good ones more than justify buying the record. All in all a singular recording.
This album is the best!.......2006-04-07
This album is in my top 3. It is so well-written and beautiful -- no mindless pop tunes here. Buy it. Now!
This Man Will Be Heard.......2005-12-14
A few months ago I heard a snippet of "Get In, Get Out" while surfing through XM. I was intrigued by the sound and the content of the lyric. I heard the artist's name, Randall Bramblett, and googled it to see if I could find out more about him. What a discovery. His 2001 CD for New West Records, No More Mr. Lucky is an absolute treasure trove of intelligent, artisan song writing, superb musicianship, and great recording--an all around tour de force of soulful, swamp laced, southern pop music that I thought had disappeared. Randall Bramblett has a unique "voice" (in the literary sense) that deserves a much wider audience. It's a given that his music is too sophisticated and textured for some of the tin ears in pop radio, but fortunately for him (and us) there are sources like satellite radio, the internet, touring, and old fashioned word of mouth proselytizing to spread the Randall Bramblett message. And with a sufficient groundswell of grassroots support, even the tin ears will eventually take notice.
But the topic here is No More Mr. Lucky and although the whole album is superb and tastefully paced, it's hard not to pick favorites. "Peace In Here" is an appeal for refuge from a media drenched world. "....kill the TV, shut off all the lights, I want some peace in here," he sings. Then, answered by what sounds like a divine reincarnation of Roger Hawkins and the Muscle Shoals rhythm section backed by the Memphis Horns and a B-3 sound right out of Malaco studios in Jackson, "Peace In Here" continues Bramblett's search for solace and a moment of Zen over the sounds of idle party chatter bubbling under the track. Great lyrics, memorable hook, outstanding playing...why is this not a hit you ask? So do I.
"God Was In The Water" is probably the best-known cut from this album. Bonnie Raitt covers it on her new CD and Bramblett will open for her on some tour dates in February and March of 2006. It starts out with an melodic, slightly funky bass signature, adding percussion, other instruments sparingly and eventually a wah-wah guitar before introducing an image filled, whimsical meditation on God's modus operandi. Interesting, innovative changes, catchy hook, Bramblett's sparse, pitch perfect delivery, thought provoking lyric...why is this not a hit you ask? So do I.
"Get In, Get Out," from which the album's title No More Mr. Lucky is taken, is a meditation on the Southern version of "looking out for number one," with the requisite Southern conscience pangs about abandoning family and home. And anyone who's grown up in the South relates to the image of a warm beer between the legs while driving with the AC blowing full blast. It seems as if all the players on this cut discovered the "and" of the beat simultaneously, making for some playful counterpoint to a solid rhythm track. And while Bramblett reveals his ecumenical set of influences throughout the album with references to Coltrane and a song about Chet Baker, here the band does an homage to the early be-bop groups with a close approximation of "trading fours" in the instrumental section. Confident, hard charging playing, rich musical references, thoughtful reflective lyrics, ...why is this not a hit you ask? So do I.
Every cut is of comparable high quality and flawless execution. This is the best, most fully realized album I've heard in a long time. It is timeless and evergreen and even though it was released in 2001 it is even more relevant and resonant now than it was then. Writing, production values, performance, musicianship, pace, soul...all delivered at the highest level. Download it, buy it, buy it for your friends, and talk about it. This man deserves to be heard. This man will be heard!
A Showcase for a Melodic Poet.......2005-10-02
Randall Bramblett is a beat poet with jazz arrangements flowing from his fingertips. The lyrics are deep and Bramblett has put thought into them, "You run, but where are your answers?; You cry but where are your tears?; When you're lost enough, you'll find them."
The music is typical Bramblett: tasty southern-fried jazz-blues fusion on a plate of rock & roll garnished with solid, funky bass. In other words, Bramblett is a talented songwriter with a knack for perfectly matching his lyrics with just the right music. And what music is is!
Contrast the smooth, mellow sounds of "Sunflower" - a song that isn't really about buying a sunflower -- with the stronger, driven angst of "Aching for a Dream: and you will hear a sonwriter/musician who is bending all of his considerable talents to convey clear, meaningful messages.
You may have heard Bramblett's considerable multi-instrumental talents from his Sea Level days or on other Capricorn label Recordings (Allman Brothers, Cowboy, etc.). "No More Mr. Lucky" may be even better than "Thin Places," though both are nothing short of amazing.

I've been waiting for this CD for years and it's finally here. Where else can you find a collection of Kalmar and Ruby songs? If you love the movie, you'll love the soundtrack. As with all Rhino soundtracks, both the audio, art work, and liner notes quality is great. Buy it before all 2500 copies are taken...
beautiful old time music.......2004-07-13
there are so many great songs sung by beautiful women-Gale robbins singing I love you so much, Arleen doll on All alone Monday, but the best is the enchanting unforgettable Thinking of you, sung by Vera Ellen, the best dancing lady ever on the screen. Sad we cant see Miss Ellen dance to the song but the wonderful scene will live in your memory. A very nice record,Also Miss Debby Reynolds does a very nice imitation of Hellen Kane on I wanna be loved by yo.

Customer Reviews:
A very mixed musical bag . . ........2004-05-14
This recording is a primarily a collection of themes, and music from British television programs, from the 60's and early 70's. These are not the original recordings, but updated versions recorded presumably just for this compilation. Most of the music is performed by various orchestras, including those led by Laurie Johnson, Barry Gray and Tony Hatch. Being from TV, the pieces are mostly short, and are taken from various kinds of programs including comedies, dramas, and adventure/action type shows. There is great variety in the sounds you hear, and there really isn't an overall "theme" to this collection of themes. The rather detailed CD notes provide informative background and some vintage photos.
Music from programs that made it to America, like The Avengers, The Saint, or Danger Man/Secret Agent Man, may be familiar to American listeners, but unless you have been exposed to British television, much of this music will be unfamiliar. There are also some themes from American TV, like Perry Mason, The Fugitive, Peyton Place and Ben Casey, which may be recognizable.
Taken for what they are, some pieces are well done. For those who favor upbeat, action type themes, there is High Wire from Danger Man, the twangy Maigret's theme, and the themes from Riviera Police and Department S. The version of the theme from the Avengers, performed by original composer Laurie Main's orchestra, is stirring, as you would expect. The same cannot be said for the disappointing version of the theme from The Saint. There are a few vocal tracks as well, such as the rousing Stingray, sung by Gary Miller. Many pleasant and easy to listen to tunes such as Roy Budd's Mr. Rose, and the themes from M. Somerset Maughham and Dr. Findlay's Casebook can be found.
Though there will probably be something here for everyone, such a mixed musical bag makes a general recommendation most difficult. For most, the purchase of this set is very much a roll of the dice. If the track list does not look familiar, you might want to look elsewhere.
