good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27
We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.
memories.......2007-02-22
This cd is excellent it has a lot of very good music and true to the original sound, Am getting a lot of enjoyment, highly recomended
TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13
This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.
TV themes.......2006-07-05
Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.
Deja Vu.......2006-02-17
Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10
If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.
Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19
Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.
And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.
I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.
More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30
There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.
It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).
This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.
There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.
Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25
This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.
Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27
This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.
I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.
Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.
Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11
I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

Setting the record straight..........2007-05-20
First, let me set the record straight. This CD contains *representations* of "the music ... you'd hear at the very moment a particular Addams Family character would appear on screen", NOT the actual music clip from the show because the actual songs had to be shortened, lengthened, sped-up or slowed-down to meet the timing needs of the video portion of that particular moment in the show. Vic Mizzy is the Original composer for the music for the TV show, as the first reviewer pointed-out as the "songsmith". This album contains full length songs that were developed from the "original incidental music" melodies that one heard during the TV show. If the first reviewer wanted ONLY the "incidental music" clips, he would have had a very short album. In fact, come to think of it, I can't recall any TV theme song lasting a full three minutes or longer on the TV screen. Granted the "The Addams Family: Main Theme 11/2/64" is NOT the same song used for the TV show. The 51 second opening "Main theme", complete with Vic Mizzy singing for the familiar opening number has been included on the re-mastered CD version of the 1965, RCA vinyl release. The TV Theme never appeared on the vinyl release by Vic Mizzy. I should know as I had the original album and now own the CD version. Now, to better explain these songs, I'll refer to the liner notes that appear in the CD booklet.
"Since its debut in the 60's, The Addams Family television series has been shown in reruns thousands of times all over the globe - nearly every day of the year the show appears on a TV screen somewhere. The key to its long-lived and worldwide popularity is a sophisticated blend of humor, camp horror, and of course, the music: the quirky Addams Family theme song, composed by Vic Mizzy, is easily one of the most instantly identifiable TV tunes ever recorded.
"The New York-born Mizzy has written hits for Doris Day and The Andrews Sisters, composed for numerous films, and has scored hundreds of TV shows, from "Green Acres" to "Quincy". It's his boundless creativity and sense of humor that earned him such credits, and these traits were very much in evidence on his Addams Family soundtrack work.
"Originally issued on the RCA Label in 1965, much of the music on this disc represents what you'd hear at the very moment a particular Addams Family character would appear on screen: "Uncle Fester's Blues," "Morticia's Theme," "Gomez," etc. Mizzy reflected recently, "While the show was being shot I told Carolyn Jones (who played Morticia) and John Astin (Gomez) to walk a certain way and I developed special music for their characters based on that. With Morticia it was a very smooth gait. You couldn't see her legs because of the long shroud she wore, so when she moved it looked like she was roller-skating... she just glided across the floor. And with Gomez, I suggested he walk like Groucho Marx!"
"Similarly, Thing (that mysterious hand-in-a-box) had a little ditty of its own, and when Lurch sat down to tickle the ivories, "The Anxiety Tango" was the tune he'd always play. In fact, it's Mizzy himself playing harpsichord on that one (the keyboard is his main instrument). Mizzy's creative stamp is all over the show in several not-so-typical ways as well. For example, it was his idea to show each of the stars snapping their fingers in time with the music during the opening sequence, which he wrote and directed. It's also a little known fact that the vocal version of the series' theme song which open each episode was sung by Mizzy himself, in his own very distinctive growl. "I overdubbed my voice four times for that one," he explained, adding with a laugh, "You know, I've always thought that most rock singers sound like Louis Armstrong with a cold. Well, my voice has natural distortion so I figure I'll have a big hit rock 'n' roll record one day!" Today Mizzy continues to compose for television and film. - Christopher Niccoli, 1991."
Songs Tracking Order and time:
The Addams Family: Main Theme (1:56)
Uncle Fester's Blues (2:13)
Gomez (2:00)
Morticia's Theme (2:38)
Lurch's Theme (2:12)
One Little, Two Little, Three Little Tombstones (2:24)
Thing (1:57)
Laugh? I thought I'd Die! (2:36)
On Shroud No. 9 (2:24)
The Addams House (1:35)
Hide And Shriek (2:38)
The Anxiety Tango (2:03)
The Addams Family: Main Theme (Vocal) (:51)
Unfortunately, due to copyright restrictions, Amazon does not have any samples for you to hear, which is a shame. As for the reviewer stating Vic Mizzy's music has a "decidedly Lawrence Welk tinge to them", a more accurate comparison would be the music styles of German born, composer, conductor, arranger and recording artist, Bert Kaempfert who was also using a treble booster on the bass guitar to give it a more pronounced, popping sound. I do take exception to the statement that Lurch *always* played "The Anxiety Tango" when he "sat down to tickle the ivories". MOST of the time he'd play that song but there were several occasions where he'd play something else. It's too bad "Lurch", actor, Ted Cassidy, died in the 70s. He did some excellent acting in other roles and movies back then. While you wait for the DVDs, this CD is a nice little investment for anyone wanting to recapture the sound of the 70s and music from The Addams Family.
I was immediately dissapointed in this soundtrack........2005-03-10
I first bought this soundrack as an LP record back in the 80's. I more recently purchased it on CD and I listen to it very seldem. I don't know what gets into the minds of soundrack producers that often encourages them to offer new arrangements to the music originally featured in a film or in this case a TV show. I was so looking forward to hearing the great music from the Addams Family TV series unaltered. While some of the music is very much like or actually is the same as in the TV show more of it has rather bizarre altered arrangements for unknown reasons. I know that Mr. Mizzy has the masters and I believe owns the rights to all the original music cues for the Addams Family and how I wish he would make them available to all of us who loved the music in this series. Let's all write to him and encourage such a release.
Good For A "Reformulated" Sountrack... But Not Great........2004-05-10
Don't be fooled. "The Addams Family T.V. Soundtrack" does NOT provide you with the original incidental music you hear during the broadcast version of the vintage 1964 television series. So, if you're a stickler for such things, you will be somewhat disappointed by this disc.
That's especially true when the very first cut you hear is some instrumental version of the famed theme, played at a slow swing place complete with finger snaps and vocal ahs! Not a good beginning.
But once you get past that first track, the disc rebounds nicely with the themes played for the various characters, which fans of the series will recognize immediately, despite not knowing the names of the tunes. "Uncle Fester's Blues" picks up the pace well. "Gomez" has an authentic sounding ring to it, if not for the female la-las added. "Morticia's Theme" is quite evocative and hypnotic. "Lurch's Theme" is fun, if not faster paced than you would expect.
Generally, it's not a bad collection of Jazz songs, that have a decidedly Lawrence Welk tinge to them. But then again, they are presented here by the songsmith himself: Vic Mizzy and his Orchestra, which adds to the authenticity of the collection.
The liner notes features a full color cover pic of the famed opening theme pose with the family in "snap" position, and small black and white production shots of each cast member and a forward by cartoonist Charles Addams.
Huge fans of the series might be interested in this disc, since there is no other material like it out there, and people planning a Halloween party wanting some friendly background music might find this suitable, but everyone else should just wait for the series to eventually appear on DVD.

Far from Creepy, but deliciously Kooky.......2003-09-25
A reimagining of The Addams Family directed by Barry Sonnenfeld for the big screen. Almost instantly one would think for sure that this would be prototypical Danny Elfman material. But alas for Elfman fans, the soundtrack scoring duties for this delightful Creep Fest of a flick went to composer Marc Shaiman, who is easily as gifted a melodist as Mr. Elfman, but in a more accessible manner. Mr. Shaiman himself, in the soundtrack's liner notes, makes mention of how hard pressed he was to understand how Danny Elfman DIDN'T end up scoring this movie. But when it comes right down to it, this is a wonderful soundtrack regardless of it's composer. It ranges from blissful operatic grandeur (think Gilbert and Sullivan by way of George Gershwin) to the unexpectedly romantic. Little treats for fans of the movie can be found in an extended version of the "Mamushka," the zany brother-brother duet from the film, and the screwball rendition of "Playmates" which will most certainly only be appreciated by those who can recall the point in the movie in which the song appears. But Mr. Shaiman's lyrical abilities are evident throughout the score tracks, and his ear for creative variations make the affair all the more listenable. The soaring Main Title theme is used several times in varying modes, but unlike some composers who live and die by one main theme, Mr. Shaiman incorperates two other prominent themes, and mixes them sumptuously together. This soundtrack is a feast for the ears. Those who've seen the movie will likely enjoy it more than a more casual listener, but much delight is to be derived from this wonderful soundtrack in either case. And fear not, finger snappers, the distinctive TV series theme is present as well, but in a way that is more for decoration than flavor. With all due respect to dear Mr. Elfman, I can't imagine this film without Marc Shaiman's graceful touch.

Missing tracks.......2002-08-07
This was a very good CD. The only problem, is that about 10 songs from the movie are missing from the CD. and a few songs had the singer changed from the movie version, and it sounds trerible
Marc Shaiman's work is excellent as always.......2000-11-23
The score of Addams Family Values (in fact a really good movie) is just super! If you like the film you will love the music! Mr. Shaiman used his themes from the first movie and of course the famous TV theme and completed it with new melodies, for example Pubert's theme, Debbie's theme (you hear a fantastic variation of it on "The Honeymoon Is Over" and at the end of "Escape from Debbie) and the Chippewa melodies. Unfortunately there are some missings for a die-hard-fan like me: "Wednesday's Revolt" (an ultimate highlight in movie and on cd) misses the end melodies played by violins. In the film you hear it after the TV theme (when Wednesday shocks Amanda whith making fire). But therefor we can listen to a melodic introduction on the very same sample unheard in the movie. I also miss the music which is played when Pugsley and Wednesday have to sit in the harmony hut and then try to escape. There are a few other nice variations of the music heard in the movie which did not make it on the CD. However it is real good stuff you get. The best of all, of course, is "The Tango"; really exciting!! I also love "The Big Scene" - it is something like a Finale in which the most melodies and themes come together... There is a CD of the first Addams-Family-Movie Soundtrack. If you have it, this one will complete Mr. Shaiman's fantastic work. If you don't have it, buy this one and you will love it even more.
If you liked the movie, you'll love the soundtrack........1998-12-18
Hey Addams Fans! I would totally reccomend this cd. Listening to the music without watching the movie is really different. True most of it IS instrumental, but its really cool and fun to listen to. I haven't been able find the original Addams Family movie soundtrack and I'm not sure if there is one...so this is as close as you get!!! Not only do you get the catchy (I mean ADDIVTIVE) instrumental music, but the "Eat me" song. What more could you ask?
