5 out of 5 stars an excellent sampler of patriotic military music.......2003-02-17

I love this CD because it combines into one disc many outstanding and well recorded (Telarc DDD) performances of a variety of patriotic military tunes. For someone who doesn't want to break down and buy the entire "Victory at Sea" set, along with soundtracks to "Patton," "Casablanca" and more, this is a fine choice. My only complaint would be that conductor Kunzel has a habit of adding his own flourishes to pieces. But the outstanding clarity of the Telarc sound and the grandness of the Cincinnati Pops counters this.

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

This is an outstanding soundtrack. Not only do you get Ron Goodwin music that was used in the movie but you also get William Walton's score that was not used. They are both good. Which is better? You decide. Great cover art.

5 out of 5 stars Got this rare CD! Love it and also love the DVD!.......2004-04-28

I was skeptical about ordering this cd since it is no longer released by an official record label. But I recieved it a a nice case and the quality is great considereing it was recorded in 1969!

5 out of 5 stars This is outstanding music.......2001-09-27

This is one of the most enjoyable CD's in my collection. Ron Goodwin composed fresh themes to weave throughout the soundtrack. As always,Goodwin's music is energetic and stirring. The music from William Walton is a surprising find and is an interesting, well-composed contrast.
This is a must-have CD, truly outstanding!

4 out of 5 stars Stirring stuff!.......2001-01-15

It's true, the movie contains some of the most spectacular air combat sequences filmed, but it also has some of the worst--mostly due simply to poor editing decisions. A re-edited version of this fine film would go a long way, for sure!

The "Battle of Britain" soundtrack cd has a lot to recommend. The extra score by Sir William Walton is a welcome bonus! There are many tunes by Ron Goodwin that are standouts as well: beside the main theme there's "Ace High March" which seems to weave elements from the best of proud wwII german and allied marches into a truly stirring yet pleasingly catchy melodic line. Goodwin meant this piece as a tribute to the participants on both sides. I like these kind of soundtrack marches and I think this one ranks right up there with the march from "Force Ten From Navarone" and the one from "Patton" in terms of sheer toe-tapping infectiousness. It's that good! From time to time I still hear it played at football games.

But for me, the jewel in the crown is Sir Walton's "Battle in the Air" (used in the film). Not only is this piece superbly matched to the film, but it even stirs the imgination apart from it. It's written from the POV of the british fighter pilots who must intercept the escorted nazi bombers before they reach their targets. In the music you can hear them jockeying for position, trying to get close enough to the bombers without getting jumped from behind. You can hear the confusion of a dog-fight; the close calls and near misses, the insistent machine gun fire, the ceaseless maneuverings, the brief lulls in the tension puctuated by moments of sheer panic and the feeling of needing to have your head mounted on a swivel as enemy and friendly planes cartwheel through the sky in all directions. It's all here and it all vividly comes together in a tense and adrenaline-charged set-piece that climaxes in kettledrums as a german bomber plunges into the english channel! There are many other good works on this cd but this one is my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Fiery Film Score.......2000-09-15

This is a "blinger" of a film score. It's powerful from start to finish, and easily conveys the emotion that gripped the participants in the Battle of Britain. This is a clear example of how a good score can significantly enhance a film's impact.

The music, however, is so tied to the film that it doesn't stand up on its own as well as other film scores do. But it's enough to make you want to see the film if you have not done so.

As an extra bonus, the theatrical trailer is encoded on the CD and can be played off a CD rom.

5 out of 5 stars Battle of Britain.......2007-01-23

Ron Goodwin is awesome. This Soundtrack again shows his genius of producing great stirring (military)music for an equally great film. His main title and "Aces High" march are great works of music and the other pieces are also great. Walton 's score is also really good(especially his Battle of Britain march and Battle in the Air). The two scores for the film are put together in this great Cd. A must buy for all film music lovers.

I remember watching this film at the flicks in 1970. How quaint it is now to see real aeroplanes! Wonderful film and a superb soundtrack, especially the foot tapping "Aces High" and the one William Walton composition retained for the film "Battle in the Air" The stirring "Battle of Britain March" brings it to a great conclusion.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Great War-Film Scores.......2004-06-11

Ron Goodwin is one of the most underrated film composers of his time. Single-handedly he made music for war films into something of an art form with "Where Eagles Dare," "Operation Crossbow," and especially "The Battle of Britain." His stirring main theme will always call to mind the soaring beauty of British Spitfires and Hurricanes, and the few courageous pilots who held the breach against the Nazi scourge in the summer of 1940. But equally worthy of note is his wonderful German march. Indeed, it ranks as one of the best in the genre. There was a controversy with the film that involved the music. Originally, Sir William Walton was to do the score and in fact he produced some very interesting music. In the end it was not quite what director Guy Hamilton and producer Harry Saltzman had in mind, however, and Goodwin was brought in. The current version of the film includes elements of both scores, oddly enough. Most of Goodwin's music is still there, but two elements of Walton's score are also evident ("Battle in the Air" and the "Finale"). The recent release by Varese is an updated version of the RKO CD of 1999 with new notes, artwork and updated sound. It is remarkable in that it includes both Goodwin's score (including his own "End Title" which is arguably the better ending)and the music written by Walton, as did the earlier version. This is a rare treat for film buffs. The new release is very nicely packaged with notable production values and a reasonable price.

      Perfect

I found this CD in chicago, where this brit now lives, and the tunes and themes are such a retrieval cue for sunday afternoons watching these old stiff upper lip black and white movies on tv. Just what I needed, although the addition of 4 weddings is slightly odd. Good quality recordings...:-)
