For Igby, a modern teen shackled with the type of jaded cynicism perfected by Holden Caulfield, truly dysfunctional relationships taint his life's riches. Igby's stellar songs, haunted by vague notions of discontent, soundtrack his angst. "We live in a beautiful world," Coldplay's "Don't Panic" asserts, but Chris Martin's chilly croon sounds uneasy; Travis' cover of the Band's "The Weight" also seems world-weary, burdened by a soft country shuffle. The Dandy Warhols' "Boys Better" churns menacingly with their trademark droning harmonies, while the Beta Band's psychedelica ends in a primal jungle celebration of steel drum and chaotic whistles. Even little-known cuts by Underwater Circus and Driftland, along with three melancholy score selections, take on rueful tones. Like About a Boy's Badly Drawn Boy-penned whimsy, however, Igby's pensive emotions are understated. Although a strong undercurrent of sadness trails through most tracks, their nuance inspires empathy rather than pity for Igby--ultimately creating an oddly comforting, even uplifting, album. --Annie Zaleski

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant movie with a brilliant cast!.......2005-09-28

Wish I had a profound and novel review to give about this movie. But simply put, it is one of my favorites. Great storyline, and stellar performances, especially by Kieran Culkin. Watch the ending scene with his mother and tell me you don't cry. A must have for any movie collection.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Showcase.......2005-09-07

This soundtrack perfectly compliments an inspiring movie. The artists compiled are peerless and this is a great opportunity to sample new music in order to increase a music collection.

Great item to have.

5 out of 5 stars 5 outta 5.......2003-09-25

this is a great soundtrack. it fits the movie perfectly, adds to the movie, and the artists are all excellent.

5 out of 5 stars IGBY- the european version.......2003-03-18

The soundtrack album is actualy a european version where the music in the movie is slightly different. It's an excellent compilation including Travis`version of "the weight" and europe's most recent rock breakout "underwater circus"! Higly recommendable.

4 out of 5 stars Nice indie mix.......2003-03-13

As one of the better soundtracks to come out in the recent past, the tracks fit well in the movie and they fit even better on a CD of their own. Established artists Travis, Coldplay, Beta Band, Dandy Warhols, and Badly Drawn Boy put in appearances with lesser-knowns and soon-to-be-knowns that are just as good. The collection of indie pop mixes upbeat and downer songs in just the right balance to fit any mood and any day. The Dandy Warhols Bohemian Like You rocks you and Beta Band shines in Broken Up A Ding Dong, my two favorite cuts. But all in all, a stable mix of excellent performances that perfectly compliments an excellent movie.
