Informed by a vintage Hollywood production sheen and flashback-fueled, identity-questioning melodramatics worthy of Hitchcock, Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar's sexually-charged film was quickly hailed as a mature masterpiece. The film's classic Hollywood conceits are deep-rooted, and Iberian composer Alberto Iglesias reinforces the film's often retro mood via a brooding, classically oriented score with an ear towards history. It may briefly excerpt Rossini's "Kyrie" to haunting effect, but the touchstone here is the Bernard Herrmann of Hitchcock's prime, with an emphasis on their epochal Vertigo and especially the tense, dark strings of Psycho (which "Escena Familiar" and "Cine Olimpo" echo with haunting grace). But while Iglesias capably evokes the color and spirit of those iconic touchstones, he crucially does it without sacrificing his own identity. Evocations of Spanish culture come mostly via vintage performances of "Quiza, Quiza, Quiza," "Cuoro Matta" and others, but on the expansive "Puerta Finale" the composer skillfully interweaves his Herrmann influences with touches of mournful jazz, flamenco and "Kyrie"'s choral echoes, creating a compelling, oft chilling post-modern new whole. -- Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Even better than the film.......2004-11-21
Alberto Iglesias did it again, a wonderful soundtrack!
His last collaboration with Pedro Almodovar, "Talk to her", is one of the best scores I've heard in recent years. In that movie, the scenes of the country villa, accompanying with the touching song of "Cucurrucucu Paloma" by Caetano Veloso, easily became one of the most beautiful five minuets I ever had in a theatre.
Before I went to see "Bad education", I can't help wondering, Could I have another enjoyable moment like "Cucurrucucu Paloma"? Luckily, I did have one, sort of. The Spanish rendition of "Moon River" is such a beautiful and haunting piece. But unluckily, the way the music delivered in the film is so disturbing. It started as a beautiful and innocent singing by a boy standing by the river while ended up with an innuendo of the ugly fact of sexual violations. However, if you didn't see the movie, the "moon river" will be a pure pleasant enjoyment.
Compared to the slightly weak movie, the music itself is powerful and flawless. From the beginning to the end, it doesn't have a single dull moment. In a word, buy this awesome CD!
The Starving Crocodiles... .......2004-11-17
The Starving Crocodiles
Almodovar's latest movie is undoubtedly his best, and a very inventive film-noir that absorbs and electrifies you from the very beginning. Alberto Iglesias' score serves "as a cradle where the movie rests" as the auteur himself said.
La Mala Educacion (Bad Education) is one of -if not- the best soundtrack composed this year, and its style is absolutely magnificent. Following the film-noir trend, Iglesias' score is a mixture of tunes a la Herrman ("Juan y el Sr. Berenguer", "Por mi grandisima culpa", "Escena Familiar"), poignant waltzes ("Foulard en seda", "La Carta", "Valsetto"), and vocalized cues that reflect the theme of the movie, and illustrate it fittingly ("Kyrie", "La piscina", "El cine como espejo"). "Cine Olympo", an exquisite theme for the movie-within-the-movie manifests itself disguisedly many times, in variations, as Iglesias' has done in previous scores where a parallel story is narrated - The Flower of my Secret, Live Flesh, Talk to Her, and All About my Mother- however the best track in the score is the "Overture". Other superb tracks are "Carta del mas alla", "Plato", and "Adagietto"... melodies that crave lust, but "Puerta Final" -the MAIN theme- is absolutely grand; probably the best potpourri of songs written in the last decade, that will grab you by the horns from the moment it opens to the last saxophone refrain, in an orgasm of eight minutes that you will want to experience over and over again.
The soundtrack also consists of key songs that in one way or another relate to the main characters and the story: "Maniqui Parisien", "Cuore Matto", "Moon River" (a very avant-garde arrangement), and "Jardinero".
Alberto Iglesias has composed a score so dark, rich, hunting, powerful, and mysterious... that proves to be irresistible.
Experience the Bad Education!!!

Description
The critically-acclaimed music from the long-awaited 'NOIR Original Soundtrack I' shows composer Yuki Kajiura (.hack//SIGN, Boogiepop Phantom) at the top of her game with an arsenal of immensely satisfying, lush instrumentals that are evocatively moody, deeply atmospheric and unevenly stirring all at once. This 18-track CD features the opening theme song, 'Coppelia's Casket' performed by ALI PROJECT and the closing song, 'Beautiful Emotions' sung by Akino Arai (Macross Plus, Outlaw Star, The Daichis, Tokyo Underground).
Customer Reviews:
Decent Soundtrack.......2007-06-10
Very enjoyable, containing most of the best music from the Noir Anime Series.
One of the Best Anime Sound Tracks Ever........2006-11-05
The music on this CD is excellent. Some of it has a unique mix of opera and techno that is very upbeat. The best tracks from the show are on this cd.
Jazzy Techno.......2006-01-17
When Noir hit the airwaves, it was an immediate success. The animation was gorgeous, the plot was engrossing, and the action was brutal, yet beautiful. Augmenting this anime was the breathtaking score by Yuki Kajiura. Her blend of techno, Latin chants, and opera rivaled some of the work by Enigma, Yasushi Ishii (Hellsing composer), and Techno/new wave auteur Susumu Hirasawa of "Paranoia Agent".
The Noir Original Soundtrack contains all the music that we came to know and love. The haunting opening theme "Coppella no Hitsugi" (Coppelia's Casket) by Ali Project, the operatic les soldats, and of course, the highly danceable "Salva nos", the background music that usually played when the girls were getting ready to kick some ass. Yuki Kajura effectively uses classical and modern musical styles to not only provide the right kind of energy for the scene, but creates an album that you can enjoy with out having the animation to augment it.
It's not all techno on this album. The music score also incorporates French, Italian, and even some Japanese influences. There are several piano solos, which further shows the diversity of composer Yuki Kajiura and her group of talented musicians. While the opening and closing are not part of Yuki Kajiura's compositions, they fit in very well with the overall vibe she was going for. She even incorporated several coda's from "Coppella no Hitsugi" into her own work. Truly, a collaborative effort.
BEST TRACK
While "Coppella no Hitsugi" is an excellent piece, my favorite is "salva nos". Sure it was one of the most overused tunes in the series, but the pulsing beat combined with the exciting blend of opera and techno is sublime. I can run to it, I can dance to it, and I can even....kill someone with it.
WORST TRACK
I would say "Chloe", simply because it's a little too up-tempo for our cold as ice killer. I think a harder techno edge would have been better.
Perfect for Fans of:
Enigma, Jane Alexander, Orbital, Hellsing Soundtrack
CONCLUSION:
The Noir Original Soundtrack is one of those great albums that you can enjoy whether you have seen the anime or not. Thanks to Yuki Kajiura's superb blend of techno, orchestral, and regional sounds, you will find yourself transported into the world of great composer delight.
The US version of the great anime soundtrack!!.......2005-08-17
This is the same soundtrack as the v.1 imported version. Only this CD is $30 cheaper because it's the US release. Get this one! My review is as follows:
This is a great soundtrack. It perfectly captures the ambient, mysterious, moody atmosphere of the anime Noir. The tracks are akin to music by new age artist Medhi and "meditation" type new age music. Very awe-inspiring music. Some tracks are more upbeat, but still flow well and transport the listener to another place. When I listen to "Ode of Power" I imagine a camel caravan in Egypt travelling across the desert. That's what's so neat about the soundtrack. With every song your imagination is piqued, and you find yourself falling into the same mood each song displays. This is a perfect soundtrack for relaxing.

Good fun music, keeps moving. Not as good as the first album.
Buy the US release for cheaper price.......2006-09-14
Geneon Anime Music has released the Noir OST 1 and OST 2 CD for domestic US market. The listprice is about $15, sometimes during sale as cheap as $10. Better, the included lyrics and essays are written in English. Try some credible online anime store (AnimeCornerStore, RightStuf, AnimeNation). The third soundtrack (blanc dans Noir) and the opening theme single are only available in Japan release.
Great CD, horribe price........2005-11-13
I friggen love this anime series and this CD. It has some of the best songs Ive ever heard on an anime, and everyone should hear it.
However $44.000 isnt worth it. There are way better deals online if you just search for it.
Blew me away.......2005-07-17
This is the first cd that I added to my anime cd list. Not knowig it was the seconed cd it thought it was going to lack the energy of the first.
How wrong I was.
The first song really puts you in a state of anticipated ease for the rest of the cd. The oprea, classical and the guitar solos are really something to admire. This girl is highly gifted as a composer. The songs she did this for are flawless to the subject and still being quite an ameture in the composing limelight to Yoko Kanno she really can hold herself down.
I can't wait to get the Hack serires because they to wuld be top notch.
Truly one of the best score from an anime show!.......2004-03-08
Yuki Kajiura is rapidly making her place as one of the best composer in the world of anime soundtracks and Noir is, in my opinion, her best work! Her style, that can be categorised as New-Age/World Fusion, is highly inspired by occidental/European music but her Japanese origin gives it a unique feeling (think of Enigma meets Kitaro). This Volume Two is softer and slower than Volume One but it certainly doesn't mean that it isn't as good! In fact, there are some truly amazing songs on this album (Le Grand Retour and Killing are among the best songs in the entire show!). Yoko Kanno, look behind you! Yuki is just there!

Customer Reviews:
Yuki remains one of my favorite composers.......2005-09-24
My first awareness of Ms Kajiura's talents came with .hack //sign. I was haunted by those snippets of song, continually found myself learning the words and singing them. I knew I wanted to hear more.
I keep collecting more and more of her work, and have never been disappointed. On this CD, I was particularly moved by Salva Nos and Canta Per Me. Never would I have dreamed that I would be moved emotionally by a Latin operatic work written by a Japanese woman.
I feel her strengths are in melody and expressive harmonies, particularly when the female voice is involved. She never fails to provide shivers of joy, and there's usually a gulp or choked-back tear in there somewhere as well.
As an import, this is a bit pricy, and probably isn't a novice's best introduction to her work. But its a fine CD, none the less. It's also left me wanting to see the anime, itself.
I think that if you like music, any of this woman's works will haunt you. But some ghosts are worth it.
Kajiura does it again.......2005-09-05
Kajirua's amazing music doesn't stop at .Hack or Aquarian Age. It goes all the way to Noir. I was a little iffy about first buying this CD. But, for $10 at Fry's, I couldn't resist.
The onpening song, Coppelia No Hitsugi by Ali Project is described as being the color Yellow, which fits it perfectly. Strong opening song for this CD & rated an "A" from me.
The middle songs by Kajiura are described as being the color Red which fits these. They include:
Les Soldats (Not one of my favs) D-
Snow (Beautiful) B+
Canta Per Me (Strong Lyrics) A
Corsican Corridor (Sounds a lot like .Hack//Sign) A
Ode to Power (Interesting in a good way) B
Solitude by the Window (Another beautiful song) B+
Romance (Definatly my fav) A+
Silent Pain (Odd, but good) C-
Lullaby (Beautiful everything with pretty lyrics) B-
Mélodie (Dramatic turn in song which my friend loves) A-
Chloe (Kajiura said this was her fav person & the song agrees) A
Whispering Hills (Mezmarizing. Also sounds like .Hack//Sign) B+
Zero Hour (Gentle) C+
Liar You Lie (Fun to listen to) B+
Sorrow (My Mother's Favorite because of the Cello) A+
Salva Nos (A lot better then the Fiction ver.) A+
And finally, there is Kireina Kanjo by Akino Arai described as the color blue, a relaxing color. Soft with a voice to match. All in all, I give this soundtrack a:
B+. A definate must have for any Kajiura fan
Very Unique.......2005-02-07

Great Music From A Great Anamie!.......2004-09-24
When I purchased this soundtrack, I had no idea what to expect. The music on the show is great, but with Japanese imports, you never can tell just exactly what you're getting into. Well, let me tell you that this CD is FANTASTIC. It contains all the best music from the NOIR series. The opening and closing themes are longer and uncut and are in Japanese. Two cuts are in Latin and are great (4&17). One song is in English, and the rest are musical only. I was so happy with this CD, that I just purchased Noir Soundtrack Vol.2 If you have no Idea what I'm talking about, do yourself a favor, and rent or buy the first NOIR DVD. After watching it, you'll be hooked. I was, and I know nothing at all about Anamie. Enjoy!
Amazing, Never gets old.......2004-08-05
This CD is amazing. I borrowed it from a friend after she played it at a skating rink. It is amazing. Although most all of the lyrics are japanese, if you know a little it gets you into the language. The songs are widely varied, from a real dance beat pop in Kopperia no Hitsugi (1) to a french acordion in Romance (8) to piano in Zero Hour (14). There are also two opera tracks that are like japanese opera amici-ized and bond-ized (4 & 17). The album is wonderful music that is clean and is very mysterious, yet still beautifully written. Im definitely going to get volume 2!

Product Description
An unique and original blend of Buddhist philosophy, vaudevillian comedy and surrealist art film from filmmaker Marc Rosenbush, the award-winning ZEN NOIR follows a nameless detective as he investigates a mysterious death in a Buddhist temple. But his logical, left-brained crime-solving skills are useless in the intuitive, non-linear world of Zen, and he finds himself drawn into a deeper, stranger, more personal mystery... the mystery of death itself. STEVEN CHESNE's brilliant and beautiful score blends the hip, jazzy sounds of traditional Film Noir with the exotic sounds and rhythms of the Far East to take us on an extraordinary musical journey. Like the film itself, the music of ZEN NOIR transcends any one style, creating a wholly original sound. Playful, mysterious, and hauntingly beautiful, the music penetrates deep into the psyche to take the listener on a powerful and emotionally satisfying journey of the spirit. STEVEN CHESNE's career has spanned symphonic, historical and world music, as well as music for film and television. He has composed the scores for over 300 episodes of primetime network television, and has scored 17 theatrical films, including "Debating Robert Lee," "The Trip" and "No Turning Back."

"film scores and themes ~ Ultra Noir".......2004-11-18
Milan Records and Warner Music present "Ultra Noir", featuring themes and suites from films about mystery, sex, drama and murder...music that lingers within the very fiber of entertainment in what has been called "film noir"...many actors started their careers playing the downtrodden hero like Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Alan Ladd, Robert Mitchum and Jack Nicholson...with some sexy leading ladies Lauren Bacall, Veronica Lake, Jane Russell, Eva Marie Saint and Elizabeth Scott...early in the '40s up to the present time, we've come to love the gumshoe whodunits.
With the likes of the following line up of composers Klaus Badelt, Elmer Bernstein, Carter Burwell, Pino Donaggio, Brad Fiedel, Charles Gerhardt, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann,Joe Hisaishi, Natale Massara, John Ottman, David Raksin, Miklos Rozsa, David Shire, Alan Silvestri and Christopher Young and Hans Zimmer...each giving the dark and sultry effect to each cue.
A list of film noir that will keep you planted squarely in your seat ~ "BLINK", "BLOOD SIMPLE", "BODY DOUBLE", "BROTHER", "COPYCAT", "DOUBLE INDEMNITY", "FAREWELL MY LOVELY", "GOODBYE LOVER","JENNIFER 8", "L.A.CONFIDENTIAL", "LAURA", "MULHOLLAND DRIVE", "NORTH BY NORTHWEST", "THE PLEDGE", "SHATTERED", "THE USUAL SUSPECTS" and the bonus track of "BLACK FLOWERS"...themes that will stay with you in your dreams and yes even your nightmares...just the way you like 'em!

Customer Reviews:
The best music in almost any anime..........2004-06-18
Noir, like Cowboy Bebop, is a anime that people either love or hate, but most people agree that the music is the best part of the anime and one of the best soundtracks of any anime. I have very few anime CDs out of the hundreds out there, among them is Robotech, Tenchi Muyo, Ranma 1/2 and a couple of the Cowboy Bebop CDs and now Noir has been added to the collection. For me, that says a lot. If you like Noir or just enjoy good music, get it.
Good Music for Bad Anime.......2004-06-07
Noir is the story of two assasins living in France. The anime itself is badly written, animated, and lacking in all aspects of quality for an anime of it's type. However, it's soundtrack is it's one (and only) redeming quality. I recomend the soundtrack to all fans (but not the anime itself).
Deep an profound music from an excellent series.......2002-01-23
The Soundtrack features everything from the fast paced opening theme to the haunting Requiem Salva Nos. For those who have seen the series, you know that the original compositions leave a lasting impression, and make Noir a Musical as well as Visual Masterpiece.
