Orfeu (1999 Film) [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Credited to Veloso and issued in the U.S. on the heels of his excellent Livro, Orfeu is actually the Veloso-supervised soundtrack of Brazilian director Carlos Diegues's version of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth. The music includes remakes of songs from the 1959 Black Orpheus and new tunes by Veloso and rapper Gabriel O Pensador, along with lovely score excerpts that fill about half the CD's playing time. Focusing heavily on life in the country's slums, the film's concept is a perfect vehicle for Veloso's passionate, hyper-intelligent mind; Orfeu the album is certain to whet listeners' appetites for the picture itself, due for American release later in 2000. Until then, stateside fans of Brazilian pop have another beautiful, challenging record to add to their collections. --Rickey Wright

This impressionistic score from Marcel Camus's 1958 cinematic retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus was most Americans' introduction to the Brazilian musical style called bossa nova. As it became a nationwide craze that featured both Brazilian samba and U.S. cool-jazz participants, the names of Black Orpheus composers Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa became familiar far beyond the hi-fi set. Along with the haunting theme song, "Manha de Carnaval," and several Jobim compositions are the vibrant street sounds of the pre-Lenten festival Carnaval, which provides the backdrop to the tragic love story of Orpheus and Eurydice. The score is awash with percussive samba rhythms and the laughter and chanting of the annual festival melee. This is a great disc to play when the day needs a parade. --Lois Maffeo
Customer Reviews:
The best and original........2007-01-29
I like Manha De Carnaval so much that I listened to Domingo, Nana Mouskouri, Carly Simon and Luis Miguel's versions borrowed from the libraries. I like the original song in track 6 by Luiz Bonfa. Track 8 guitar playing is also beautiful. Track 11 female vocal is wonderful, spontaneous and second to none. The sound quality is excellent.
wonderful.......2006-03-26
It's wonderful to have a new recording of the sound track from the movie Black Orpheus. The movie was one of my favorites but I played my old record of the sound track so many times (and put it through so many moves) it was scratched and no longer enjoyable to listen to. Now everytime I listen to my CD version I am transported to the time and space of the movie and the time and space of the early sixties when I first heard it. The little bonus addition at the end of the CD is fun too.
Buy the movie, not this soundtrack.......2006-03-09
Save your money. I love the movie very much, and to watch it and to listen it is an experience like none other. However, if you look for the music from this movie, do not look here. This is just the movie, except without video. I have great respect for Bonfa and Jobim's work on this music, but they do not get glorified truly since the tracks change so quickly and the movie sounds play such a large role in the soundtrack cd. Listen to Trio da Paz and their Black Orpheus album and see how it compares, and even though it is not the original Jobim or Bonfa, it pays more homage to them than this original soundtrack. Verve took the wrong route with this one. Yes the music is landmark in evolving Samba/Bossa Nova, but this cd does not depict truly how wonderful the music is.
Great Disc.......2006-01-15

Antonio Carlos Jobim is remembered as one Brazil's greatest composers. He spearheaded the creation of bossa nova nearly a half century ago; he was also a musician whose talents extended far beyond that of a composer. His training was in classical music and he'd been involved with large-scale orchestral collaborations for his work over the years. This posthumous effort, recorded live in 2002, highlights many of those large-scale works, offering lush arrangements by the maestro himself, Claus Ogerman, and Nelson Riddle, as well as new charts by son Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet. In addition to classical arrangements of such classics as "A Felicidade" and "Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Impanema"), previously unreleased pieces "Preludio" and "Lenda" make their debut on this double-disc collection. This large canvas of sound deftly illustrates the beauty of Jobim's melodies, but the composer's majestic sense of harmony is really highlighted, thus offering up the biggest revelation of the project. This is the best re-imagination of the composer's work since Morelenbaum/Sakamoto's Casa. --Tad Hendrickson

In Concert With The Sun, Moon, Stars And A Heavenly Choir, Everytime Someone Enjoys Symphonic Jobim, An Angel Gets His Wings!.......2007-06-21
Jobim loves people, and gets excited about all kinds of things, I'm sure there's certain pieces by Debussy and Ravel that made Jobim red in the face because they are so beautiful.
How does an Artist manage to be influenced and still a make a work of art their own?
Love and desire.
Symphonic Jobim strikes me as being very Nationalistic, a sort of Spiritual road map to the heart of the World, and what better way to celebrate one's roots by drawing on the panorama of Rio and Brazil, or, Brasil.
Frank Loyd Wright once said, Architecture is frozen Music. Jobim went on record, Music is frozen Architecture!
Thanks, Tom!
Historians say the height of Civilisation is the drawing in and taking out of water, music is like water, it comes in waves, when I listen to Symphonic Jobim all the public works are in place and working smoothly.
I was raised on Debussy and Ravel, but they're a little before my time, Symphonic Jobim puts life's panorama in perspective for me.
I don't have to be near a pretty picture window to drink in the scenery when I listen to Symphonic Jobim, the beautiful motifs conjure all kinds of pictures and feelings.
Every recording becomes a by product of the time period it was made, but Symphonic Jobim has a certain timelessness attached to it... it is a perfect piece of music beginning to end!
Symphonic Jobim, a Project by Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet, does much credit to it's Composer. Good Job!

For nearly 40 years, Ron Carter has been jazz's most in-demand and well-traveled bassist: from Miles Davis's Someday My Prince Will Come to A Tribe Called Quest's The Low End Theory. Along the way, Carter has recorded several projects featuring Brazilian music. On this recording, Carter, along with pianist Stephen Scott, tenor saxophonist Houston Person, guitarist Bill Frisell, drummer Payton Crossley, and percussionist Steve Kroon apply jazz forms to Afro-Brazilian samba rhythms. As a frequent visitor to Brazil and as a devoted student of that country's music traditions, Carter and his crew deliver a subtle, laid-back CD that combines the best of both worlds. Carter's "Saudade," which roughly translates from Portuguese as "longing," highlights the Iberian character with its mournful melody. His other tunes "Por-do-sol," "Samba De Orfeu," and "Obrigado" make the Rio De Janeiro/Bahia-born rhythms swing with their festival-parade soul intact. On Jobim's "Manha De Carnaval," from the motion picture Black Orpheus, Person's broad and breathy tenor solo echoes Stan Getz's floating melodies. Carter's "1:17 Special," dedicated to the African-American "underground railroad" and Dvorak's "Goin' Home," ring with the spirituals and the blues, peppered by the percussive percolations brewed by Carter's buttery bass tones and the rhythmic relations from Brazil. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
Bill Frisell saves the day!.......2003-08-20
This is an excellently recorded ensemble playing great tunes... The production is close to stellar and the addition of Bill Frisell makes a nice icing on the cake... This is a very relaxing, brazilian CD. Again, Frisell's guitar moves the music to intrigue with relaxed confidence.
My favorite night driving CD for three weeks.......1999-12-24
.. and although the jukebox has 5 other cds, this one keeps on playing! The music is in the best tradition of Carter's past recordings ('So What','The Bass and I'). Quiet, cool jazz, now with a touch of Latin culture. Certainly his bass is superb, his quiet hand is behind the band in every note, but it's not a 'bass plus five' band, it's a real sextet with carefully arranged solos for each instrument. Special thanks to Bill Frisell for excellent electric guitar solos. Also, the album is very carefully produced, so the bass sounds natural on any kind of equipment.
Excellent Cd.......1999-11-06
This is one beautiful cd every track is nice. If your into Brazilian music you can't go wrong with this title. Just get it!

Customer Reviews:
caetano in tradition film beyond.......2005-02-04
I am striving to own both, film and music, eu sou voce the most beautiful song in the world, this film puts the 1959 version in perspective, a little intense but considering the intense situation chages, not at all innacurate ... and thank god for the genius of the last of the great portuguese passion for music. Here is the last trace of the best in the world.
Where is the Hip-Hop and Rap?.......2003-02-10
I love this soundtrack, obrigadissimo Sir. Veloso!
But I also loved the hip hop and rap music in portuguese. Could anyone help me located those artists?
Caetano shines again, uma estrela brilhante!.......2000-08-29
This is an absolutely fantastic soundtrack, the perfect mixture of classics from Vinicius de Moraes' original play and the 1950's film, accompanied by great new material that captures the Brazil of today. In particular, Orfeu's "samba enredo"--the type of "story samba" that the carnival groups present each year in their parade--is a true work of genius. Shifting smoothly from the traditional rhythms of samba to rap and back again, Caetano and Gabriel O Pensador achieve a thoroughly modern, engaging, and DANCEABLE masterpiece. To me, this is no unnecessary remake. In general, Brazilians, though in love with the music from the first screen version, have never thought highly of the film itself, because of its fairy-tale misrepresentation of their reality. And for those who think that the rap is something "imported" just for the sake of appealing to an international audience, it's not so. That is the music listened to by many Brazilian youths, especially those in the favelas or shantytowns where Orfeu takes place. Just as in Carlos Diegues' TIETA, for which Veloso also composed the soundtrack, the music is an integral and deeply appealing part of the film...and enchanting on its own.
Unnecessary Re-Making of an Old Classic.......2000-07-01
Just for fans of Caetano Veloso though he does not sing or play on all tracks. Good work, just that. But not the same impact as the original. There is better and more honest Brazilian material to offer from the Amazon wide catalog.
History re-written.......2000-06-15
Who else but Caetano Veloso--the national treasure of Brazil--to record the soundtrack to the re-make of the film that introduced bossa nova to the world in 1959? Caetano's sense of phrasing, arrangement and placement is, as always, genius. Buy the new movie if you can, buy the original, buy this soundtrack, and buy the original soundtrack and own pieces of musical--and cinematic--history.

Awesome fitting tribute to Brazil's melody maestro.......2005-11-07
This fabulous concert comprises Brazilian melodies, both traditional and those composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, with the ample talents of Paulo Jobim, Mario Adnet, and many top Brazilian arrangers and musicians. I was lucky enough to witness a live rehearsal of this concert last spring in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Very impressive! Lush melodies, orchestral arrangements of depth and complexity, the vocal majesty of Milton Nascimento and many others; all of the above add up to a very satisfying musical experience to anyone who loves the rich tasty delight that is Brazilian music.
