Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01
I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Soundtrack Masterpiece by Jerry Goldsmith.......2007-07-06
The full soundtrack of Rambo 3, composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith. Some may think of some songs looking alike, but to the acurate listener and fan, it is, without error, a great deal. Excellent music!
Inside the CD enchart, there is an small text about the recording, musical features and techniques for songs or all the CD, that might prove useful for those that have musical education and apreciate it.
Most of the score in this CD was not used in the film. Actually, several sequences had tracked music from First Blood Part II, but nevertheless, it is still worth it!
Vastly entertaining.......2007-05-16
The late Jerry Goldsmith was a remarkable composer, and the score to Rambo III was one of his finest. It's easy to overlook these films as being silly Stallone action films (which indeed they are) but accompanying each of these films was a fantastic and captivating Goldsmith score. This one is a very enjoyable listen.
Rambo III is good.......2006-06-16
If you're a Rambo fan and like Rambo movies then this CD is worth buying. I enjoy listening to the instrumental songs from the movie which I also like. It's enjoyable listening to a digital audio CD that plays songs(in stereo sound) from movie scenes that I like. There's even some songs on this CD that's not in the movie. Jerry Goldsmith did a fantastic job on this CD.
Unbridled Goldsmith!.......2003-12-21
Offering over 76 minutes of music (most of which wasn't used in the film), RAMBO III is Goldsmith's exciting coda to the action hero trilogy. Weaving motifs such as "It's A Long Road" from FIRST BLOOD and "Escape From Torture" from RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II, the maestro completes the story of Vietnam veteran John Rambo, bringing the themes around "full circle," to quote Col. Trautman (Richard Crenna) in the film. Forever the innovator, Goldsmith introduces some new themes, which thread through the score in tracks including -- "Preparations," "The Game," "Night Fight" and "Final Battle." Avoid the inferior Scotti Brothers release -- which features only about one-forth of the composers score -- and replaces the score with dreary pop tunes. Like with the release of Goldsmith's A PATCH OF BLUE or ISLANDS IN THE STREAM, Intrada once again offers Jerry Goldsmith plenty of room to spread his musical wings -- allowing the listener to float in the wake.
Somewhat disappointing.......2003-03-01
After the action genius that was First Blood Part II this is kind of a dull entry. Goldsmith seems to be more interested in giving us sort of non-incidental music. The score on this CD is the complete score that went largely unused in the movie. In fact in the film they even re-used cues from Part II. I'm guessing that this is because what Goldsmith had wrote for III was well...dull, as I have already said.
There is no awesome action theme that will have you punching the air in excitement this time round, no action tracks that will get you pumped up with excitement or even any action tracks that sound cool. There are action tracks, but they're rubbish. It feels as tho Goldsmith couldn't be bothered finishing them.
However there ARE some cool cues on this CD. But they are 'nice/peaceful' cues. And for music on a Rambo soundtrack to be nice and peaceful you know something is not right. Goldsmith's theme for Afghanistan and Peshawar are seriously beautifully melodic tunes that are really the only reason to buy this CD. The repeat of these cues in the final track (along with a brilliant send-off of the 'It's A Long Road' theme) are mesmerizing and triumphant. But not in the way the previous scores were.
Plus the 'It's A Long Road' theme is so very seriously underused and almost forgotten. Which is a real shame considering the strength it has. And I cannot imagine why Goldsmith never re-used his Part II theme considering how amazing it was.
Now that this CD is OOP it's pretty hard to find but I would seriously only advise hunting down if you are either a Rambo or Goldsmith completist.

A rip-off of the complete score.......2000-09-04
This is another example of the music industry trying to get the consumer to invest in the purchase of multiple soundtrack albums of the same movie. I bought this album because of my curiousity in the track listing (of which there are 10 tracks listed). I already have another CD in my collection -- also titled "RAMBO III: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack", but it contains 23 tracks instead of 10 and has a different jacket cover. If you are a fan of the "Rambo" music or like the compositions of Jerry Goldsmith, you probably aren't going to be happy with this CD. Although Amazon doesn't list the 23 track "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" like I have, you might want to best spend your dollars at an auction site or "rare" web sites that offer the complete version.
Rambo III soundtrack.......2000-08-25
With only a few exceptions, this soundtrack fails to capture the spirit which was presented in Rambo "II", lacking the musical depth and intensity captured in previous Rambo soundtracks. In stark contrast, when listening to the soundtrack from II, you could almost see the movie and feel the energy from the visual by just listening to the tracks. While III is well done in it's own right, it doesn't convey the same stimulus to the imagination. It seems, however, to leave one with the same question that the viewer is left with after seeing the movie: "did we really need this last installment of the Rambo saga?"

Heroic, Powerful, Breathtaking.......2000-06-17
The above title sums it up wonderfully. This cd is a must own for any person interested in gaining film music from some of Stallones greatest films. The music alone is what always accompanied a great stallone film. For instance, what would 'Rocky' be without Bill conti's extradinary cult hit' Gonna fly now"? Or the heart - rendering and heart wrenching theme from 'lock - up', or the beauty and Majesty of the 'Cliffhanger' themes.
The best thing is that you don't have to be a serious soundtrack collector to admire the magic of these songs. They all exhibit their own unique characterstics; musical pieces designed to inspire, encourage, relax and awe. Many of these tracks from stallone's films are not widely avlaiable; some like 'Lock-up' are indeed a rare gem. I love this soundtrack for its unique varitey, its warm and emotive film scores.
Not only that - it's also great value for money -you get lots and lots of excellent tracks on the one cd. I really hope you have some time to sit back and enjoy this cd as much as I have.
