At long last, Lindsay Lohan and Meryl Streep sing on the same CD. Okay, so they don't actually duet, but both do perform on the soundtrack to Robert Altman's take on Garrison Keillor's popular radio show. (Keillor fans will know exactly what to expect, as the film is scrupulously faithful to his universe, and Keillor and his Shoe Band wrote a good deal of the songs.) As anybody who's seen Postcards from the Edge knows, Streep can really sing, and she sounds great in the rootsy, old-style country vein that makes up most of this soundtrack. Her rollicking duets with her screen sister Lily Tomlin, "My Minnesota Home" and "Goodbye to My Mama," are priceless. Woody Harrelson and John C. Reilly are beyond crusty on "Whoop-I-Ti-Yi-Yo," which sounds like both an outtake from and a parody of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, while "Bad Jokes" is, well, just that. As for Lohan, who plays Streep's daughter, her version of "Frankie & Johnny" is a little shaky but heartfelt and kinda adorable. Purists, you can start hollering now. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Garrison Keillor's long running public radio show, "A Prairie Home Companion" is now the center of a Robert Altman film of the same name starring Keillor, Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Woody Harrelson, John C. Reilly, Kevin Kline, Lindsay Lohan, Virginia Madsen, Maya Rudolph, and Tommy Lee Jones. The story is a fictional one of what happens on and off stage during the last broadcast of the beloved radio show. The soundtrack showcases the spectacular onstage performances by the cast. Offered here is a regular audio-only version and a CD + DVD deluxe version packed with performance footage and film outtakes.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Country Music.......2007-05-22

I love the music to this movie. The band is superb and the instrumentals are great!! The words are upbeat and heartfelt. It brought back wonderful memories of growing up and thinking of all my family and relatives. I only wish I could find more CD's that the band plays together on.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent music!.......2007-05-12

If you like Bluegrass music, the soundtrack of the Prairie Home Companion is a must-have. I recommend watching the movie first and then getting the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2007-03-22

Nice to listen to. The DVD has a few, but not all, of the most entertaining songs from the movie.

4 out of 5 stars A PRAIRE HOME COMPANION REVIEW.......2007-03-12

I bought the soundtrack since I enjoyed the music when I watched the movie. You can listen to the excellent deliveries of country music songs from Garrison Keillor,Woody Harrelson,Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin. In my opinion the best reason to buy the CD is to hear Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin singing the "My Minnesota Home".They are just fantastic!Pleasant suprise is the well prepared DVD that complements the CD and contains some songs that you don't find in the CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Marvelous Meryl Streep.......2007-03-09

This is a wonderful collection of songs, sung with warmth and heart - a true treasury of music.
The highlight has to be, though, the beautiful voice of Meryl Streep. Not only is she the world's greatest living actress, but she is a profoundly talented and gifted vocalist. Her grace, warmth, depth, and beauty give a gorgeous elegance - and eloquence - to the songs she performs. I challenge anyone to listen to "Goodbye to My Mama" without becoming teary-eyed. Streep is, in every way, quite simply...extraordinary.
A highly recommended collection of entertaining and touching songs.
Great album!

5 out of 5 stars ChiCago, the best movie, the best soundtrack.......2003-11-10

The movie was sensational, it seems almost impossible to capture all of it in a soundtrack, but they did a wonderful job of it. Every sngle song captured the spirit of the movie, it was almost like going to a broadway musical because of the quality of this music. Catherine Zeta- Jones did a amaizing job of singing the songs "All That Jazz", "Cell Block Tango", "I cant Do it Alone",and so many more. This music is almost magical, I would recammend this soundtrack for anyone!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Chicago.......2003-10-08

If you loved the movie Chicago I'll garenty that you'll fall in love with the soundtrack. You can never get to bored of "all that jazz" with Catherine Zelta Jones singing it, you can tell that she's the real star of the soundtrack. Don't be surprised if you run across "The cell block tango remix" and all that junk, it just didn't blend in with all the other songs, I always avoid it.

    5 out of 5 stars great.......2003-08-28

the movie had great songs and great music and this soundtrack captures all of it.

3 out of 5 stars I'm sorry, but this is overrated; get the 97 Broadway record.......2003-08-09

I'm surprised by the enormous volume of glowing, 5-star reviews here. This soundtrack isn't THAT great. Maybe I'm biased. I was fortunate enough to see "Chicago" on Broadway in early 1997 (the matinee right before the cast walked over to Radio City for the Tonys, of which it won 3 or 4). That was a few months after it opened, with the original revival cast: Bebe Neuwirth as Velma, Ann Reinking as Roxie, James Naughton as Billy, Joel Grey as Amos, Marcia Lewis as Mama Morton, and D. Sabella as Mary Sunshine. Right afterwards I bought the CD and have listened to it many times since. So I can't help but be stuck on it. (I even have the 1975 Broadway recording, which I like though not as much as 1997.)

This soundtrack simply does not feature the vocal chops to be found on the Broadway recordings. The music itself is comparable, but certainly not an improvement. And the rap version of "Cell Block Tango" is a too-obvious attempt to take modern pop "stylings" (if you can call it that) into consideration when they are NOT at all relevant here. (Okay, more bias, since I despise rap.) Plus that last track with Anastacia, or whatever her name is, is awful. She tries so hard to sound like a modern R&B singer, but she can't do it. (And, again, I hate modern R&B, so yet another pre-disposed strike for me).

I liked the movie, but it (and the soundtrack) don't hold a candle to the Broadway "original revival" cast. I highly suggest getting that recording instead. You'll hear Bebe Neuwirth wail even better than Chita Rivera did, and James Naughton blows away Jerry Orbach (and certainly Richard Gere, by FAR).

And the DVD version isn't worth it. It really only has a 10-minute featurette that I'm willing to bet is on the DVD that's about to come out. And I can see that some people here have taken Richard Gere too seriously when he mentioned that Renee Z has a Billie Holiday quality to her voice. I laughed when I heard it then, and I laughed again when I see people repeat it here (as if it's their own words--yet they spell her name Billy). Not that Renee is bad (nor is Catherine ZJ), but by no means is she anywhere near the ballpark Billie Holiday is still in 45 years after her death. (And before anyone else takes Richard Gere too seriously: no, Catherine Zeta-Jones isn't really like Dusty Springfield, either).

5 out of 5 stars Razzle Dazzle Me!.......2003-06-15

Wonderful sound track! Anyone, who enjoyed the movie, will certainly relive the experience listening to the CD. I cannot wait for the DVD to be released in August.

4 out of 5 stars The music fits Pal's world!.......2007-01-10

I liked this CD very much. Especially the music from the 1964 film- THE SEVEN FACES OF DR. LAO. The music created for the movies of the late George Pal, dove-tailed so much with the story line. My only complaint would be, that I wish they could find the sheet music from some of the mono presented recordings on this disc and re-do them in glorious stereo.

'When I was 17, I drank some very good beer. I drank some very good beer I purchased with a fake ID. My name was Brian McGee. I stayed up listening to Queen. When I was 17.'

I've had this CD for 6 years and it's just as great now as it always has been. Nothing on this CD gets old as there are loads of different songs and tunes to keep you happy. My faves would have to be The Amendment Song, Senor Burns, See My Vest, Flaming Moes and the Eye on Springfield music.

I would have appreciated if either this or the Go Simpsonic CD contained the musical cues from the Homer 3 episode, rather than just the Philip Glass take on the end credits, as they were a huge departure from typical Simpsons scoring. But there will probably be another CD in the future and if it's as jam-packed with fun as the first two then we sure have something to look forward to.

    5 out of 5 stars Simpsonic Songs!.......2001-07-28

Ok, i Highly recomend this CD to any Simpsons fan! It has everything from opening and closing themes to Flaming Moes and In the Garden of Eden! It is so awesome! Anyway I really would buy it from Amazon.com and for a great price to!

    Sincerely, #1 Simpsons fan!

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Simpsons....Suprisingly Disappointing?.......2000-10-06

I must admit...I was a mite disappointed when I listened to it. It didn't have any of my most beloved songs like Canyonero, We Put the Spring in Springfield, The Ballad of Jebediah Springfield and more. I still thoroughly enjoyed it, don't get me wrong. I just expected more of it than I should have. It has fewer songs than I thought after reading the back. I was a bit irritated with all of the end themes, seeing as how they are all virtually identical. I just over reacted with frustration because I wanted to hear my favorites. If anyone gets the impression that I liked this disc... they're crazy. I loved it with a capital "L." It was and is classic Simpson's Music. If anyone reading this has read my review of "Simpsonic," they may have the wrong impression as I was a little too harsh on this great disc. I was just having a hangover from the orgiastic experience I had after finally hearing "Simpsonic!" Lock this one in your rooms, your banks, your safety deposit boxes...it's a keeper!

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Simpsons.......2000-03-07

The CD covers tunes from the most beloved Simpsons episodes and with dozens of tracks, you're sure to get your money's worth. Buy it today!

5 out of 5 stars Simptastic! (i'm sorry about the stupid title).......2000-01-31

Great songs from the show. Being a fan i am a bit biased but it really is good. Alf Clausen does a good job a turning the Simpson theme into another without changing the tune. It's amazing how he does it especially the Hill Street Blues interpretation. Buy it now.

    2 out of 5 stars a big disappointment.......2002-12-30

tv guides 50 greatest themes is a nice package, what with its 50 card set included(i'm referring to the limited box edition) but to me fails in its failure to deliver what it advertises. alot of the early and mid period themes are NOT the original themes used on the tv shows and that is annoying to me. anyone over 35 who has ever seen the particular show the theme is for knows in 2 notes it is a modern rerecording. i don't care if the original themes sound quality isn't perfect, that original is what brings the memory back to the show. i'd like to know the reason these rerecorded "fake " themes are included here and secondly, why is this not stated anywhere here that many of these are not the original songs. i remember buying tvt's(the producer)tv theme albums in 1985 and having had the same letdown then as i do now. seventeen years later, steve gottlieb, the cd's producer, still can't find the original theme songs. if they can't get the rights, don't put them in here. how ridiculous is it to have someone other than batman & robin begin that theme. in my opinion , a full third to a half of the first 25 themes are not original , including i love lucy, dragnet, the andy griffith show, gilligan's island, batman, bewitched, hawaii five-o, mash, mission impossible and the honeymooners. i think tv guide should have monitored this a little better and only let tvt put in original themes. NOT RECOMMENDED.

Austin Powers may be a remnant of the '60s, but the soundtrack for his second film spans generations. Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello light into the former's "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," with trumpet and piano creating a plush aura. Quincy Jones and His Orchestra provide the perfectly campy "Soul Bossa Nova (Dim's Space-A-Nova)." Mike Myers himself gets into the fray as Dr. Evil for a humorous take on Bill Withers's "Just the Two of Us" and R.E.M. successfully updates Tommy James's "Draggin' the Line." Madonna teams up with William Orbit for "Beautiful Stranger." Green Day turns in "Espionage," an instrumental that harkens back to cheesy action movies and the Batman theme. Big Blue Missile with Scott Weiland attempts to modernize the Zombies' "Time of the Season" with extra drum beats. But it's pure imitation. The real thing can be found in the Flaming Lips track, the pure-liquid LSD psychedelic pop of "Buggin'." --Rob O'Connor

3 out of 5 stars Just bought it because of "Beautiful Stranger".......2000-03-27

I confess, I bought this because of "Beautiful Stranger". I have listened to a little bit of this CD(like the "Word Up" remix)but don't really want to listen to the whole thing just yet. I haven't found the right time to listen to it, like when I'm on the computer when I have the time to listen to the CD from beginning to end. And I also have to confess that I have seen "The Spy Who Shagged Me" yet.

2 out of 5 stars Soundtrack of some of the film.......2000-02-15

Many ofthe songs from the film do not appear on the soundtrack leaving it void of some of the rocking tunes that featured. The absence of these songs is noticable on the CD as it leaves it with less memorable songs.

2 out of 5 stars Not like the actual movie's soundtrack..........1999-12-28

When I first saw the movie I was psyched to get the soundtrack; I mean, so many great songs... Magic Carpet Ride, Time for All Seasons, Let's Get It On... Unfortunately none of them turned out to be on this CD. There are a few good songs, but it's really not the same feel as you get from the music when actually watching the film. It seems that Vol 2 of this CD would be pretty good from the track listings, but I don't actually have a copy. My advice: if you are going to buy one CD this year: make it vol 2. But if you are going to buy two, vol 1 is decent too.

    5 out of 5 stars Kravitz rocks...........1999-09-25

Lenny Kravitz has definitely come up with a winner...his remake of American Woman is an outrageous interpretation of the original by the Guess Who...The funky drum track, the wah-wah guitar and the fuzz vocals are what hit me...The recent debut of the video really put the audio in perspective...it should be nominated for video of the year, the ladies are perfect...Of all the ripoffs and samples of the originals by rap, it is refreshing to finally see someone do justice to the original song...Man I am back in the 70's again...Thanks Lenny

4 out of 5 stars Limited Edition means that its FURRY!!.......1999-09-03

OK, I noticed that no-where on this page does it actually tell you that the CD case is Pink crushed velvet on the outside with the Spy who sh@#ged me logo and the inside has a black velvet bit where the CD goes and a realy cool silver shiney pocket with austin on it for the sleve. I didn't find this out until it fell through the door into my waiting hands. The songs are good too :-)
