Given rampant show business cross-pollenization, it's easy to see that some singers fancy themselves actors, while many a thespian harbors latent musical fantasies. The examples of artistically rewarding crossovers are few and far between, but actor Guy Pearce stakes his claim here via the spare, heart-on-his-sleeve vocal turns in service of director Toni Kalem's tale of a young woman obsessed by a journeyman North Carolina club star (the Australian actor plays Drumstrings Casey, would-be rock star with a chronic case of philosophical pretensions). While it's difficult to ascertain how much of Pearce's starkly soulful performances here are colored by character demands, he fully invests himself in the film's well-chosen slate of songs (dominated by Canadian Ron Sexsmith and former Jayhawk Joe Henry, but also featuring tunes by cult heroes Vic Chestnutt and Robyn Hitchcock). The actor gamely tackles tunes as varied as Hitchcock's slyly sexual "You've Got a Pretty Mouth
" and Sexsmith's lilting lament "Dirty Windows" with a bluesy emotional resonance that teeters between earnest cluelessness and endearing vulnerability -- a trick that would challenge many a full-time musician. --Jerry McCulley
