Amazon.com essential recording

While it didn't do for Louisiana music what the film The Harder They Come did for reggae, the soundtrack to director Jim McBride's steamy and stylized cops-and-corruption movie is a pretty good introduction to the region's extensive musical delights (even if gospel's great Swan Silvertones are from West Virginia). The late Dewey Balfa (who appears in the film's sweet porch-party scene) is to Cajun music's rural past what Terrance Simien and Zachary Richard are to its rocking present. Buckwheat Zydeco is to zydeco what Beausoleil is to Cajun: an intelligent synthesis of the old and new that you can dance to. It's a shame the St. Augustine's Marching Hundred's raw and jumping version of "Li'l Liza Jane" didn't make the cut from film to album. And it's an even bigger shame that star Dennis Quaid's awful ballad did. --Richard Gehr

5 out of 5 stars Louisiana.......2006-11-06

Great soundtrack, if you liked the movie and New Orleans! I love both!

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best.......2006-05-11

We loved the movie and discovered the sound track. As a New Orleans regular this CD just adds to the mood when we are back home. I predict you'all will jus' love it.

5 out of 5 stars the best single disc intro to the music of new orleans.......2005-08-12

the keyword here is single disc. the whole album clocks in just under 47 minutes. don't know why, but back then the standard running time for a cd is about 45 minutes, so that's at least 20 some odd minutes worth of music they could have put into this cd. of course, at additional right fee. perhaps that was why we couldn't tap into the music of new orleans a little deeper.

that being said, this is a great compilation for beginners. the music of new orleans is an acquired taste that you may never get used to. no matter how much japanese people likes toro, the fatty belly section of tuna, if you don't like sushi, then you will never know. once you get a hang of sushi, you will get to love toro. once you start to liking the new orleans music, you will never get enough.

although new orleans is heavily influenced by the french, but they don't have this type of music over in france, so we can almost say that this is one of the most under recognized original american music. few people knows any new orleans songs outside of tell it like it is and iko iko, and frankly speaking tell it like it is really doesn't sound new orleans to me. it is about as new orleans as toto's africa is to africa. if nothing else, getting this disc to hear the music from the big easy is both fun and educational .

one single disc cannot do new orleans justice, so there is a 4 disc boxset: doctors, professors, kings & queens - the big ol' box of new orleans, also available here at amazon. that set, as comprehensive as it is, does not sound as good as this disc in terms of fidelity. there are only four songs from this cd that appeared on the boxset, but none of them are the same version as the ones appeared in the other title. if you get both you won't feel cheated.

1 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2005-07-08

I have seen this movie several times over the years and it never fails to delight me.

4 out of 5 stars Forgettable Movie, Unforgettable Sound Track.......2005-05-17

Some say, all music came from New Orleans. Jazz and blues, from which so much American music descended, got their start in the clubs of New Orleans and fields around the Mississippi delta. New Orleans, and Louisiana generally, remains a major center of musical vitality, if somewhat apart from the American mainstream.

In the mid-80s, I began to develop an interest in "New Orleans" music, and the many varied styles it encompassed including traditional "Dixieland", brass-band and more modern Jazz, as well as second-line, blues, rock'n'roll, cajun, gospel, zydeco and funk. About that time, the Big-Easy, a midling, formulaic picture, put out its sound track, and I was hooked. A sampler of the various styles, with the infectious, polyrhythmic beat so characterisctic of the The Big Easy.

There is so much they could have put on the album, and a one or two that could have been omitted. But since then, I have developed a life-long love of all the various music that represents NOLA.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars LOVE ULTRA-LOUNGE.......2007-05-13

Love this kind of music - can't get enough - have most all of the CDs. Excellent New Jersey-based company with excellent foresight and retro-understanding for the best party and jazz combos. Excellent choice for any kind of day or evening, party or relaxation time.

    5 out of 5 stars I love the Ultra-Lounge series........2006-12-10

The sound quality of the Ultra-Lounge series is excellent, even though the songs were recorded mostly in the 50's and 60's. Capitol Records packs each CD with carefully chosen tracks consistent with the theme of the particular volume in the series. Many of the selections that appear here aren't available elsewhere, either because the original album on which the song appeared is out of print, or because the song was issued as a single and never collected in an album. A few 'previously unreleased' tracks also appear here. This series is a wonderful introduction to the music of a by-gone era, and each album includes detailed notes on each track (artist, writers, date recorded, how released, etc.). I heartily recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this type of music.

4 out of 5 stars The Right Way to Approach These ..........2006-02-21

All too often, no-name artists or musicians try and re-do TV themes that we all know by heart - and they sound weak and cheap especially when they're missing the audio track that goes with it (such as the ODD COUPLE THEME) but NOT here. These are all first class musician and singers who put their own spin on each of these ... for instance, the Odd Couple theme becomes a fun little mambo - every theme gets its own arrangement and intrepretation - now, it's not all 100% successful but it's still intriguing to hear the results. So, if you're putting together a fun lounge compilation for a party or a CD, your friends will love it if you drop in some oh-so-familiar tracks with a slightly twisted spin. Nicely done.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good addition in the never-ending Ultra-Lounge series..........2005-06-29

The Ultra-Lounge series is of course limited to album tracks and singles on the Capitol label, and cobbling together so many different styles of lounge music is bound to create both excitement and dissension, but "TV Town" plays very smoothly, with hardly any ringers, and features some rare, collectible sides besides! Peggy Lee's "Bewitched" is quite a find(for the record, "I Dream of Jeannie"'s theme had lyrics too, but it wasn't on Capitol). Nelson Riddle's "Naked City" is a corker, as are Dave Pell's "Thanks for the Memory" and Jack Marshall's "The Munsters"(a jazzier, yet more toned down version than the theme you hear on TV). Liberty Orch.'s "Burke's Law Suite" is too long but has its moments, and John Barry's "Human Jungle" is very intriguing. A nice addition to the series, with another booklet full of great colorful photos.

4 out of 5 stars You've got me in your spell........2005-06-14

This CD features recordings of television themes, dating from 1953 to 1970. It was released under the "Ultra-Lounge" banner, although a few or the performers aren't really "lounge" (The Ventures, for example). But it is still a fun CD with a lot of nostalgia value for fans of old TV shows. It should be pointed out that these are not the versions of the themes heard on the TV shows, but rather cover versions made for records. All of the themes are instrumentals, with the exception of Peggy Lee's rarely heard vocal version of the "Bewitched" theme song (which is a real treat). Fans of old TV shows should enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorite Mancini albums.......2000-06-18

I've owned the LP of this album since the early 1970s. It contains some of my favorite Mancini-composed tv themes like "Mystery Movie Theme", and something I had not heard before I owned the album, called "Life is What You Make It" that features a great arrangement of Henry's wonderful choral harmony. Even non-Mancini themes like "Ironside" and "Shaft" sound good once they get the Mancini treatment! If you are a collector of Mancini tv or movie themes, you should have this album in your collection and play it often!

5 out of 5 stars Another strong Broadway by the Year.......2006-08-20

Scott Seigel's concerts, Broadway by the Year gather a group of the current crop of Broadway performers and turn them loose on songs from Musicals that opened during 1 year on Broadway. It helps that 1953 was a strong year musically, with Bernstein's Wonderful Town, Porter's Can Can, Kismet and Me and Juliet from Rogers and Hammerstein. Jule Styne also chimed in with Hazel Flagg which contains one almost standard "Every Street's a Boulevard in Old New York. Some great stuff on this album, wonderfully sung as almost always. I love this series and hope to acquire each and every one at some point.

MERLINA Mercouri stars in the movie 'A Man Could Get Killed' where James Garner plays a man who gets mistaken for an Officer of The Company. Danger, intrigue and passion fill this tongue in cheek movie with thrills, good humour and fun. Merlina later became the Greek Minister of Tourism and James Garner went on to play Rockford in The Rockford Files as well as Colonel Darby in 'Darby's Rangers' about the exploits of the US Army Rangers in World War 2. In the movie Merlina is an expert pickpocket, among other things. Great music from a gorgeous movie which is so rare I can't find it anywhere. Frank Sinatra made 'Strangers in the Night' from this movie his signature song together with 'Mack the Knife' from Kurt Weil's Die Dreigroschen Oper, or The Three Penny Opera. ENJOY!

"Strangers In The Night" is probably the best-known and best-loved composition by Bert Kaempfert and it makes several appearances on this great two-fer from Taragon. Kaempfert scored the comedic spy thriller "A Man Could Get Killed" and the original soundtrack from the film comprises the first half of this CD. It's a marvelous score filled with beauty, tension and intrigue. The two prevailing themes throughout the score are "Strangers In The Night" and "But Not Today". "Strangers" was a modest hit for Kaempfert and a blockbuster hit for Frank Sinatra, and it naturally became the title song of the next Kaempfert LP. "Strangers" is featured here in it's full length hit version. Also included is "But Not Today" in a full length version that was featured as the b-side of the "Strangers" single. There are many other standout cuts on the "Strangers" album as well, including Kaempfert's hit single version of "I Can't Give You Anything But Love". Three other cuts worth mentioning are Kaempfert-Herbert Rehbein originals: "Milica" (better known as "Sweet Maria"), "Forgive Me" and "Two Can Live On Love Alone". Track for track, this is an excellent CD.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the $5 that I paid for it.......2003-11-21

This album is absolutely horrible...honestly, this degrades the name of all things Star Wars. The MIDI that they're using for it isn't that great except for their version of "Cantina Band", and "The March of the Jedi Knights" makes me wish I hadn't seen this album in the first place.

Warning: Stay away from this album. Do yourself a favor and pick up "Cocktails in the Cantina" or "Sketches on Star Wars" if you want real music. You can thank me later.

5 out of 5 stars Star Wars Saga.......2000-04-01

When I first saw this CD in the store I thought that it sounded good, so I bought it. When I first listened to it, I must admit that I was not quite sure what to make of it. But since then I have listened to it several more times and it has become one of my favorite Star Wars soundtracks to listen to. It is interesting to hear familiar tracks played with a different style, but at the same time these varieties do not stray to far from the originial. I highly recommend this CD to others, especially my fellow Star Wars fans.

1 out of 5 stars Not the real thing.......1999-06-24

This is only an interpretation of John Williams' epic soundtrack. The music sounds similar, but its terrible when you think of how good the original is. Why waste your money on this, go buy the real John Williams' CD's, This CD is an utter disappointment. It sounds like one whole MIDI file on CD.. just TERRIBLE

        5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......1999-05-24

Star Wars! Everyone know what it is. It`s been around for many years. It`s one of the best Science Fiction movies it ever made since the movies of Star Wars was released in 1977 and the other two, a couple years later. It`s still remember by people through the years till now and into the future. I`ve heard the three Star Wars themes and it is so good. Great sounds! Everyone should bye this cd? It`s the best! "May the Force be with you!" P.S. Star Wars will always be remember forever!
