Great eclectic album with plenty to offer for fans of goth or metal.......2006-10-04

Spanish quartet Moonspell has had a long, solid career in the metal scene, playing alongside genre giants such as Opeth, Cradle of Filth, and Katatonia. They have also consistently released material that evolves in different directions with each new album which, depending on your point of view, either makes them sell outs or musical geniuses. "Butterfly Effect" is a very eclectic album, having tracks consumed by rage and laced with black metal growls next to more laid back and melancholy tracks containing mostly clean vocals, so even those who aren't so enamored with extreme metal will probably find something here they like.

Butterfly Effect starts off strong with Soulsick, the best track on the album. The sound effects and drum work combine seamlessly with the gothic style clean singing to invoke an almost palpable, eerie sense of rising dread. Before long the screams and growls begin, enhancing the mood of the song, which seems to invoke imagery of burning monuments from the past and rising anew from the ashes. The growling vocals on Butterfly Effect are done very tastefully, as they never actually overshadow or suppress the other elements of the music. For the most part, this is a good thing, but occasionally the listeners might find themselves thinking that perhaps the vocalist Fernando Ribeiro should go a little more crazy and make things more intense. The title track, "Butterfly FX", is almost as good as Soulsick, and follows the same basic pattern. Strange sound effects blend into clean vocals which eventually give way to screams. From there on the songs all become much more calm, focusing more on clean singing and a melancholy mood, although every now and again things become just as heavy as in the opening tracks. The ending songs on the album don't pack as much punch as the earlier offerings, so they tend to blend together after repeat listenings.

Fans of gothic rock or black metal will probably enjoy Butterfly Effect, and the Spanish accent of the lead vocalist provides a nice change of pace from the more monotonous growls of other metal bands.

Dissapointing.......2005-09-13

I love Moonspell. Irreligious is on my list of top favorite albums ever, and Wolfheart completley made me swoon. I was given the opportunity to fully listen to Butterfly FX, and was hyped to hear another masterpiece. However, listening to Butterfly FX, I was nothing more than incredibly dissapointed. Moonspell seems to be taking a more Nine Inch Nails approach to this album (not that I have anything at all against NIN, I like them as well) but it just doesn't work for them. At all. The best songs on this album are mediocre, the rest are below it. All in all, if you are a first time listener of Moonspell, do not start here. Go with Wolfheart or Irreligious. Long time Moonspell fans.. go ahead and give a listen, but don't expect to fall in love again here.

Very Un-Moonspell like!.......2004-10-10

Moonspell are one of my favorite bands, but Sin/Pecado and this album are just not very good. Their first 2 albums really showed a band with their own style and character. It seems that the next 2 releases would have them trying something different. If you have a great thing going, why change? I feel like Moonspell are very uncomfortable on this release. The music is truly not the real Moonspell. They have always had Gothic influences, but this sounds more Progressive and Industrial. They obviously wanted to change their sound for some reason only to go back to more of their original sound after this album. Fernando sounds great as usual, but the music sounds more electronic and generic. I saw these guys live and they kick a**. The drums were so heavy that my feet were numb after their set. If you want Moonspell's best, get their first 2 albums and last 2 albums.

Heavy & Good.......2003-06-02

Unlike the American metal, the European bands have a peculiarly atmosperic style. Which is why I love Moonspell. While you cant really compare both styles, I like the European more. Its more versatile. It hurts me to give this brilliant/talented/versatile/intense band just 4 stars. Besides owning almost all of their works, I am also an avid reader of the A - Diaries from the bands website. Butterfly Effets (BFX) is loud, thrashing and best serves full volume. This is an intese workout for the band after releasing the more approachable Sin/Picado. As if wanting to purge themselves from the guilt of rumours that they are slowing down, Moonspell release BFX. It surely will calm the doubting thomases down. The onslaught begins with the brilliant SOULSIK, a masterpeice headbanger. Butterfly Fx song is the defination of its tittle, i.e., Chaos and stands true to the name. Cant Be is one of the best songs of the band ever. LustMord and Selfabuse are very heavy. They are at twice the pace of Pantera, yet they sound very melodic. How this band does that is baffling. This is true talent. While playing heavy is relatively easy, playing like this is surely not. Solitary Vice and Adaptables are the rest of the brilliant songs. Listen to them full volume and watch the blood fill your veins. Track, 6,8,10,11 & 12 are the weaklings. The almost sound like fillers and are the reason why this otherwise superb album gets 4 stars. But this truly a brilliant effort and Fernando never lets you down...Just get this one quickly.

Interesting to a point.......2003-05-25

Anyone who knows anything at all about Goth music knows that it's not mainstream and it's not all about whining and moping. And it's FAR from MTV related. Heck, they don't even play Marilyn Manson on MTV anymore. Goth has ALWAYS been an underground phenomenon, with only a couple bands that have (temporarily) made it to the mainstream. It's irritating when people speak out in ignorance.

This album was something of an experiment for Moonspell. This time they blended a militant aggro Industrial Metal element to their trademark heavy GOTH sound. Moonspell has never put out a bad album, but to me the albums that have captured what I consider to be the true Moonspell spirit are Wolfheart, Ireligeous, and Darkness and Hope. Yes I missed the corny Vampire lyrics on this album. I also really missed the "Transylvania Rock" atmosphere of those classic albums. I was so glad when they brought those dynamics back in Darkness and Hope. With this album they've presented an interesting Goth Metal release with an "Industrial" Metal edge. Still It didn't grab me the way their other releases have.

No, no no, I'm not amazed in a good way. I am amazed at how this falls so steeply short of expectations and actually that's why I'm writing. I see by other reviews I am not the only one disappointed.

Well, here's one example: We have on the CD, "Evan Kills Tommy" which in my opinion sounds like any other thing on any movie anywhere, but there's no hint of the one captivating piece which is the reason I bothered to look up the score to this movie in the first place.

Thankfully a previous reviewer knew. I didn't buy this because that song was not on it. That song, in case anyone cares, is Alone Again and, by Departure Lounge. Thank you thank you thank you to the previous reviewer for solving the mystery for me!

One of the Best EP's ever made.......2003-10-04

Coming from Australia, it's hard to find anything decent in terms of rock and metal that isn't some crappy high school band. Coming from Brisbane this four piece have constructed an absolute masterpiece in their first recording. The sound is great. Produced to perfection but not overdone in terms of being manufactured (*coughs Avril Lavigne).

The sound has obviously been influenced by many metal/alternative bands, and if you like them your sure to be 'Effected' as the moto goes. Sevendust, Deftones and Tool can all be heard in their music. ('Consequence' being the Tool influenced song and appears on their album not this recording). Clint is a stand out on vocals because unlike most newer metal bands he can actually sing and hold a note, Kurt churns out the riffage and no one can help but mosh in your own house to "Sweet & Low". The Butterfly Effect top it off with stop start riffs that actually work well with their sound on "The Cell", The Drumming is solid and you can hear Mike doing back up singing duties (i think) as well as Bass.

I guess there are only two negatives to this EP and that is it tends to sound a little like the dreaded "nu-metal", although on the brighter side it only seems to have taken the better qualities and made them their own. The other downside to this EP is there are only 6 tracks....

Pure Brilliance.......2003-03-20

The Butterfly Effect are an amazing 4-piece band from Brisbane, Australia.

Thier debut EP was released in 2001, and due to such amazing sucesss, it was later re-released.

They have a very unique, and truly amazing sound. Something that just has to be heard.

The Butterfly Effect have put together, in my opinion THE best EP ever released anywhere.

Extremelty Highly recommended if you're into anything heavy, or just great aussie music.

highly impressive debut album from a band that's bound for big success.......2006-06-22

Can't say too much that hasn't already been said by other reviewers, but I bought this album after reading a good review of it in a local music magazine in Australia and I'm so glad I did.

For a debut album this is amazingly impressive, as the song writing is of very high caliber. It's had to label TBE simply as hard rock or metal, because there's a lot going on on this album, from almost operatic-like vocals to strings and ambience on certain songs. Sure there's the obvious Tool, Deftones and Perfect Circle comparisons, but to say they just sound like a melding of those bands would be far too limiting for them.

If you like modern rock with intelligence, and radio-friendly hooks without comprimising heaviness, then check this album out. You won't be disappointed.

Oh and if you like this album, check out their recently released follow up IMAGO, which from my first impressions is also on par with Begins Here.

Superb.......2006-01-04

I wonder what it was that inspired me to pick up this album. I had hear nothing of the band previously, I can't imagine that the cover art appealed to me and I knew nothing of the chaos theory so I didn't know what The Butterfly Effect was exactly. So, here I was, in Sanity with 50 bucks to spend and for some reason I spent 20 of that on this album.

The first time I heard it, what can I say, I was conflicted. I had no idea what to think about it. I like the familiar metal/rock hooks but their sound was so... gloomy and the the lead singer's voice was a little creepy. I didn't know what to think. I kept it off for a little while, but I listened to it again later and it started to grow on me. The music was haunting and beautiful, while at the same time angry and heavy. Their sound is so original and brilliant that there is no point in me even attempting to explain it.

I'm super-mega-happy-deluxe that i bought this cd.......2004-12-05

Okay. Here's my little story of how I stumbled onto this incredible cd. I was walking around a little co-op in Boston Spa (that's a tiny country village in England and no one knows it exists) when I came across a metal magazine called metal hammer. It offered a free cd and since I'm rather skint I decided to buy it. Well it was a great compilation of tracks by bands like 36 crazyfists, in flames, H.I.M etc. Anyway so I'm on the bus enjoying the music when all of a sudden this song comes on that totally stands out from every other track. It was a holy moment, my friend. I was determined to find out who this band was, having found out that this brilliant little ditty was called perception twin. I searched maniacally on the net and found out that the people responsible were a little unknown Australian band called a Butterfly Effect. So I had the name and off I went round every cd shop in Leeds. No dice. `Who', the shop clerk would spout, eyeing the line of impatient costumers behind me. So I looked on amazon.co.uk, nope still no luck (its on now though, sods law). I finally logged on the amazon.com as my last resort and low and behold there it was for 27 dollars (which is lot for me). I didn't even hesitate. When it finally made its way from Australia to America to England I was totally siked. I popped it into my cd player and... loved every track. Normally have certain favourites but I can tell you that I love absolutely every track. No skipping. Someone stated that they weren't impressed with the instrumental tracks (1, 7 & 13). Well if you put the cd on repeat the tracks 13 and 1 meld together, so it's like a never-ending cycle. Anyway I got this cd over a year ago and have nearly worn it to death. I still adore it and I can't say that with many other cds I have bought. This cd is special to me. The lyrics are deep but not ridiculously so, just really good and introspective. Have a look on the net and you'll find them. To me, lyrics are an integral part of my enjoyment and in this case the lyrics definitely do not disappoint. I have heard some comparisons to tool and deftones. Well firstly I think Clint Boge sings much better then Maynard period (I'm going to get it now, he he). They sound much better then tool (don't hurt me tool fans) and deftones (ditto to deftones fans). Okay lets just say that deftones and tool pale in comparison, but hey I might be biased. They sound a bit like a perfect circle (Mer de Noms, not their latest excrement) in the way that they are epic and the masters of mood. Hey my little story seems to have exploded. Lets cut it short here. Buy this cd, marvel at it and spread the word!!!

You must buy this album.......2004-09-23

The Butterfly Effect TBE as they are effecttionately known are absolutely superb I bought this album on a whim when I heard they are supporting Breed77 on the UK leg of their tour and I was truly converted what a fantastic diverse sounding band you can here every word that's sung and the whole package is incredible if you like Tool, Perfect Circle then you will love this I can't say anymore than that but you must buy this CD you will not be disappointed as they are so talented and up there.

Great rock album...........2004-08-01

TBE are a truly original band. They DO NOT sound like Tool as many people have suggested since the release of Begins Here. I hate Tool, to me their sound is toneless and bland and they wander forever in aimless circles. Not so TBE. Every song on the album is different from every other song. Clint Boge has an amazing voice, he puts every other vocalist in the rock world to shame with his ability, and his lyrics are strong and deep. Other than that it really is hard to describe this album. It starts with the deceptively slow-starting Perception Twin, a song that builds nicely, and runs through all kinds of styles, finishing with the whispering A.D (my personal favourite along with Crave). The singles One Second of Insanity, Beautiful Mine and Always showcase a good sample of TBE's styles...One Second is a raw, heavy edged metal song, Beautiful Mine is a supercharged balled, while Always is a nice mix of the two. A great album

Very nice........2007-06-09

An Australian band that sounds quite different than anything else in this country - I would even say Un-Australian and that is a good thing. Here you have a band that can definately deliver the goods without too much hype. They are playing an intricate dark rock in the vein of American art / alt band Dredg . The musicianship, production and vocals are top-notch. Songs like Aisles of white, slow descent, in a memory are all strong and direct. The mood is somber / introspective throughout the album and the lyrics are well thought out. The other tracks are little slower and the pace could have used a little variation - but that is really a minor issue as they are all quality songs.

Imago is one of the better things to come out of Australia in many years, but at the same time its not for pop fans and those with short attention spans. But if you are into the likes of Dredg, APC, Tool etc then this is a nice addition to your collection.

World Class - Melodic and Powerful.......2006-08-29

'Imago' is a moment of artistic clarity for The Butterfly Effect. Every great band has that moment at least once in their career yet somehow I feel that these guys are just getting warmed up.

A fine balance of rhythmically heavy tracks verses more ambient and spacious songs, 'Imago' reminds me very much of A Perfect Circle's 'Thirteenth Step' in texture however the comparison between the two bands should end there.

Although 'Imago' is clearly a more commercial and radio friendly release than their debut album of 2003 - 'Begins Here'- it is through a solid performance, complex yet clever arrangements and a faultless production that makes it more assessable without losing any of their heavy and potent edge. With a display of world class musicianship, each member of The Butterfly Effect has their moment to stand up and be counted as the glorious mix allows each to be clearly audable and display the proficency of their craft. 'Imago' is devoid of repetition and formula which has tainted the creativity of most rock album in recent years.

The most outstanding aspect of 'Imago' is the presence of one of the greatest vocalists to come out of Australia. Clint Boge instantly impresses with his vocal control, emotion, range and tone. Totally original, his choice of vocal melodies and phrasing is just stunning. Particularly his more gentle moments, it is the subtle vibrato at the end of vocal lines and his perfect pitch that never fails to inspire. It is this performance which should immortalise him as a vocal champion, however he may have to settle for a more underground and less mainstream appreciation depending the success of this album. The rest of the band also rise to the occasion, with melody dripping off every progression. Guitarist Kurt Goledhart switches effertlessly between crunching dropped tuned distortion to rich chords in clean tones which allows the weight of Glenn Esmond's bass to carve his low end grooves magnificently. It has to be said that the bass tone on this album is one of the biggest, most powerful, lowest yet clearly defined I have heard on probably any album. Hats off to the engineer for achieving what so few seem to never get: a huge bass tone that sits perfectly in the mix.

The intro track which is the album title, is a melodic, gentle ditty which build up dynamics with a sweeping string arrangement as it's backbone. Just as you would expect the song to explode into riffs and mayhem it drops into almost nothing and then the second track begins. 'Aisles Of White' starts so delecately and beautifully spacious, just vocals and a few reverbed notes on guitar, that you wonder if this really is a rock album. However the weight of this song slowly builds and the main hook "Waiting for something, waiting for someone" draws you into the mood of the album. As if woken from a pleasant dream, "Gone" hammers and pounds out brutal, heavy chords that you'd come to expect from The Butterfly Effect. Yet somehow in the the churning sea of low end guitars and bass, Clint delivers a most melodic and, dare I say, sweet vocal melody for the verse and chorus rather than the harsh bark you'd expect from any other metal band playing such a heavy riff. Track 4, 'A Slow Decent, the first single off this album, is an instant catch with a perfect mix of rock and groove. Surprisingly, it is probably the heaviest vocal song on the album. Choosing it as a first single is a no brainer as it just appeals right of the bat.

In short 'Imago' is a well crafted album in a similar vain of style such as bands like 'A Perfect Circle' and 'Tool' with a polished progressive metal feel. Definitely my favourite release this year so far. I will be very surprised if The Butterfly Effect do not make headway in the US and Europe based on the strength of this album.

Simply stunning..........2006-06-28

That is what thes album is, stunning. Begins Here was a very good album but it pales in comparison to Imago. Putting it simply, Imago is a rock masterpiece. Every track has melodies and vocals that just soar out of this world. Clint Boge has to be the best vocalist I have ever heard, and his lyrics are incredible as well. This album will rightly catapult TBE into international stardom, and I would fully recommend it to any rock fans out there.

A follow up that lives up to their stunning debut.......2006-06-22

I thought The Butterfly Effect's debut album Begins Here was amazing, especially for a debut, so it was gonna be a tough feat to try and top it. And while I'm not sure if this is better just yet, it's certainly on par with it. How could they top songs like Perception Twin, Consequence and Always I thought to myself? But songs like Aisles Of White, Gone, A Slow Descent and Reach are all killer tracks and that's only the first half of the album.

At first listen I was a little unsure because this album is much more melodic, not as heavy as their debut. But after repeated listens the album slowly reveals itself for how great it truly is. I can't stop listening to the first 6 tracks to get to the second half, it's that good!

Basically, if you liked the first album, I urge you to check this out because it's just as good, possibly even better (still undecided about that). And if you haven't heard this band, start with Begins Here, because I think it'll give you a greater appreciation of where this band is going with their music on IMAGO.

I can't wait to see them on tour to hear these new songs live.

Wow. This album is amazing. I have been a fan of TBE since 2002 and I think their progression as a band has been nothing but amazing. This album is different to Begins Here. Some would say it is more mature, but I always thought Begins Here was extremely mature. The band has worked with Joe Barresi on this release who has produced such bands as The Melvins and L7 and more recently Tool (eww) and the sound is quite polished, but not fantastic. I personally feel the boys could have used a less 'known' producer and achieved a sound just as crisp. The songs are beautiful, every last one. They music is very soundscape-ish (is that a word) and image evoking. The lyrics seem to be very personal and sometimes painful, but a lot less angsty than those on Begins Here. As a whole, Imago is softer and more delicate than anything TBE has done before, but also more beautiful and more fluid. I am proud of any band that has the balls to make the music they really want to, and not necessarily what their fans want them to. That is true musicianship and it's more than I can say more a lot of well known, well established bands out there who will do anything to please their fans, which in a way is selling out. Imago is a masterpiece; I can see the band being propelled even further in their already amazing career. Stand out tracks for me are: gone; reach; and in a memory

I'll tell you, I downloaded "Black Lung" with a skeptical mind. When I listened to it I was amazed to hear something that actually sounded good. This CD may not have much on it, but it makes you hope for a full LP - really soon!
