This Ron Howard film parlays the troubled story of Nobel laureate John Forbes Nash Jr., a gifted Princeton mathematics professor tormented for decades by paranoid schizophrenia, into something considerably richer than typical Hollywood triumph-against-all-odds fare. Howard has teamed here again with frequent collaborator James Horner, and it's the composer who deftly shades the film's difficult emotional landscape and helps impart a compelling humanity. Horner's first task is not inconsiderable: musically portraying the arcane realm of mathematical theorems that are the story's backdrop. In doing so, the composer leans heavily on modern minimalist technique, bright flourishes that recur briefly throughout an orchestral score that increasingly reflects Nash's bleak inner landscape in its quietly somber and brooding tones. And while Horner has frequently been accused of excessively repeating himself in his scores, the neo-minimalist gambit employed on this reflectively pastoral, postmodernist soundscape neatly nips such criticism in the bud. Nash's triumph is ultimately an intensely personal one, well reflected in Welsh soprano Charlotte Church's lilting performance of the Horner/Will Jennings ballad "All Love Can Be." This enhanced CD also features notes by the director and composer, as well as exclusive photos and the film's trailer. --Jerry McCulley

As other reviewers will tell you yes this is another Horner machine made soundtrack. But it still sounds good! If you are a Horner fan by all means buy it otherwise "at your own risk"!

And another thing that gets me is no one even bothered to mention "Alicia Discovers Nash's Dark World" I happened to like this one this is the song that plays when he is in the hospital.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful score.......2007-02-09

James Horner's soundtrack for A BEAUTIFUL MIND is as psychologically intense as the film it so effectively embellishes.

Charlotte Church provides an appropriately eerie and largely non-verbal soprano to this remarkable motion picture score, yet one that would seem only quirky were it not so beautifully embedded in a musical stream that draws one inexorably and almost vicariously into the emotional turbulence of the Princeton mathematician John Nash.

There is an angelic nature to the shape and texture of this music, one that is able to turn demonic as the story line requires. Both by brilliance and by dementia, Nash seems the object of external forces, rising with supreme heroism (at least in the film's version of events) to conquer. The music is there at each score, coaxing the viewer into empathic solidarity with this deeply troubled man and his long-suffering and preternaturally beautiful wife.

This is mood music of the deeply engaging variety. Its lush tonal landscape is achieved under the baton of the composer himself. The score's vast range of volume and expression would certainly have made it a joy to watch in performance.

Alas, we don't have that.

But we have this.

An ethereal, compelling, even gripping tone poem. Buy it.

Absolutely gorgeous - my husband keeps it in his car and listens to it whenever he's driving.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, lovely, majestic.......2006-04-04

The sound track for "A Beautiful Mind" stayed with me long after the movie. The CD has all the themes that made the movie so emotionally powerfull. James Horner, composer and conductor, perfectly matches the excitement of genius and the terror of mental disability. Charlotte Church's clear and gentle voice compliments the music and used instrumentally creates a haunting refrain. I loved the movie and this music is wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Over all great score........2006-10-23

I've been a fan of Harry Gregson-Williams for quite some time (and to a lesser extent, John Powell). Gregson-Williams is known for working with Hans Zimmer (they worked together on the soundtrack for The Rock) and he is also known in the video gaming community for his work on the Metal Gear Solid franchise (his take on the theme, not originally composed by him, is absolutely breathtaking in both the second and third games).

So it was no shock to me that I absolutely adore his work on the Shrek franchise. I can't say much here that hasn't been said by other reviewers, but I will say that the strongest work on the soundtrack involves the more serious, epic pieces (of which there are far too few).

Stand out tracks, for me, are "Fairytale", "Escape the Dragon", "Ride the Dragon", "I Object", and "Transformation/End".

The action theme of the film is used perfectly throughout the film, but it shows up far too rarely on the disc. I'm not sure if it's actually present less, or if it was a less-is-more kind of thing when it did play in the film. Regardless, it's a beautiful composition (though it does remind me of the "hero" theme from Deep Blue Sea).

You can feel Gregson-Williams' influence on "Escape the Dragon", as there are similar pulsing electric beats that are reminiscent, to me, of his arrangement of the Metal Gear Solid 2 main theme (which to this day remains one of my favorite pieces of soundtrack music ever - it's exciting, it's patriotic, it's epic. What more does one need?)

There's also some beautiful solo guitar work on this score that's a bit reminiscent of Trevor Rabin, but excellent regardless. My only gripe is that the disc feels a bit short in running length, but I think that's because a portion of the soundtrack was dedicated to pop and rock tracks, which show up on the second album.

If you're a fan of Gregson-Williams, Powell, or just film music in general, I strongly recommend picking this disc up. It'll make you sad and it'll get your blood racing.

5 out of 5 stars Completely surprising.......2006-05-24

Harry Gregson-Williams is a fairly new composer, but despite that, he is beyond comparison. (Except for John Williams and Howard Shore and Hans Zimmer). This is supposed to be an animated film, where music doesn't matter AS much. But this composer goes beyond all expectations, putting forth all his best efforts, bringing out the best in Shrek. You can hear some links from this CD to the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Harry's later work. Even by listening to the samples you can tell this music is hard to beat. I don't think Shrek would have won Best Animated Film if Gregson-Williams had not composed the music. BUY THIS CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best animated film music ever!.......2004-03-19

Although the other reviewers are right in that there isnt a lot of music on this disc, a little over 40 minutes, it's worth the price just for the first and 25th tracks. There are so many awe inspiring tracks on this cd it's impossible to pass up. The disc opens up with a very serious and magical theme on the strings and oboe. This theme is the same one that the princess sings in her fatal duet with the bird, that track is on here too. Also, there's the memorable Welcome to Duloc theme with the child choir. Also, the fight with Robin Hood theme with some riverdance in it is on this disc. The best theme on the disc is first introduced in the escape from the dragon track, with a funky beat behind it. It's presented in it's full orchestra and choral glory in the Ride the Dragon track which is guaranteed to give you goose bumps. All in all this is a very wide ranging score with some of the most light-hearted/goofy music ever along with some of the most inspired and passionate heroic music. I can't recommend this soundtrack enough. The music of Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell added so much to Shrek, making it the best animated film I've ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars I'm so glad to have it!.......2003-01-12

I'm so glad I got this score. Such a humorous film like Shrek doesn't sound like it would have so much beautiful music, but this score proves it does. The music is absolutely stunning, sometimes powerful, sometimes scary, sometimes sad and sometimes just beautiful. There are a few recurring themes, but they are great themes and sound nice in every song. Although most of the soundtrack is pretty serious, there are a few funny songs placed in, which only add to it's greatness. If, while watching Shrek, you happened to notice some of the nice themes like I did, then I suggest getting this score. It really is a great CD and I'm happy to have this part of my collection.

3 out of 5 stars didn't get enough time???.......2002-12-21

This is the third score that Harry Gregson Williams and John Powell composed together and after buying "Antz" and "Chicken Run" I had high expectations. Unfortunately this score is by far not as good as their previous ones. Still good though, but especially less comfortable to listen to. Most songs are just too short. By the time the theme had captured you the song is over. Strongest part of this album is the humor Powell and Williams have used. Some endings of songs are quite "unusual", like "farquaad's speech" and "merry men", which can crack me up if I'm in a funny mood. Strongest tracks on the album are "escape from the dragon" and "fairytale". The rest of the album kinda sounds as if the composers didn't get enough time to compose the music, so they just put the pieces they already had behind each other. Too bad, because this is a duo that has a lot to offer and hopefully they will soon again, with less, but much longer tracks.

5 out of 5 stars "I Will Be The One".......2003-08-11

Trevor scores another winner with this one, all the stuff you come to expect from him, synth, rock, and a decent size orchestra all in one kick{in} score. IF you liked any of Rabin's other work(manly Con Air) you'll love this soundtrack. Rabin uses three themes, Jet Li's Theme, Jet Li and his Wife's Theme, and The Future Theme. Each theme is used a good bit, making the cd even better. Rabin makes good use of the orchestra, but it can't be heard sometimes becuase of the synth and rock music but thats not always a bad thing! Even for someone who does not like scores and just rock music may even enjoy this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Score means score, Soundtrack means Album, duh.......2002-09-09

To all those people who are "disappointed" by the score, go find the soundtrack, and quit whining. The score IS the background music, plain and simple, don't buy it if you're looking for the album. Sometimes, they put one or two songs with lyrics on the score, because the composer had a hand in its creation, but that's about it. Don't wail on the score because you messed up your purchase. I saw the movie, and said, 'hey, an action movie's score is quite good. I think I'll buy it.' Rabin is a heavy electronic rock artist, (see Armageddon or Con Air), and once again does a great job of properly accenting the combat sequences, not to mention the slower, emotional parts. I'll tell you what they were thinking when they made the soundtrack: "Trevor Rabin's an excellent composer, let's sell the album later, and satisify those people looking for the score for a change." that's far from nothing. After hearing nothing but rap in Romeo Must Die, this score was a pleasant surprise. Even better, though, was Kiss of the Dragon, but that's another review.

3 out of 5 stars Yeah I know this is the musical score...........2002-07-13

But I didn't want the score. I think it was poor planning to not have both the muscial score and another CD with songs used in the movie as well. I've been looking for that CD ever since I've seen the movie last year. I'm disappointed that it wasn't produced.

5 out of 5 stars Why is this so confusing???.......2002-07-01

Don't people undersand that when it says SCORE in bold letters and who the composer is that it isn't an artist album??
also, why dont they look on the back to see what songs are on it???
It blows my mind how ignorant people are!!!
This is the score by the best composer, Trevor Rabin-so unless you aren't going to review the score, don't send in reviews complaining how you got confused!!
This is a good score, so dont be expecting the artist songs heard in the [...] movie, OK??
The same thing is happening with the Score soundtrack from the Robert de Nero film.
Anyways, I thought this needed to said!!

5 out of 5 stars this is the best beautiful SCORE music.......2002-06-28

The music from this movie is absolutely beautiful in every way. Just listening to this music moves me in ways i never thought possible. Trevor Rabin is amazing. This is the score music not the rock music. If you want to the rock music go buy the bands albums but this is the SCORE music. If you like music that moves you energetically and at times makes you want to cry BUY THIS CD IT IS AWESOME!!!

3 out of 5 stars Do we need to complain about the length of this one?.......2006-09-29

So Varese only put 30 minutes of music on this album--I personally don't want more. This is one of Goldsmith's more over-rated scores. I remember really enjoying the theme from the film and wanting to get the soundtrack after I saw it on TV a few times. The main theme is very inspiring, for sure, but that's really all it has. Every time the theme kicks in, I'm glad I have the album, but there is nothing else recommendable on this album, in my opinion. The action music is simple, VERY repetitive, and after 7 solid minutes of it on one track, I'm just sick of it. The theme is great, but I'm glad we don't have more of this score--the theme is all we need. Maybe Varese saw that was the case and only make us suffer through 25 minutes of the rest of the score so that they could give us the theme. Whatever the reason, I only really enjoy the last track completely.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for the complete score........2003-05-03

Varese Sarabande badly misrepresents Jerry Goldsmith's wonderful score on this strangely brief CD. Only one third of the full score is available here. Varese are a bit unreliable this way. They either do huge releases or tiddlers like this one.

The complete score is 95 minutes long. This one is just over 30. Not very fair considering how great it is. And what is even cooler is the fact that Goldsmith composed this score within two weeks. The first score was done by Randy Newman but was rejected by Wolfgang Peterson for sounding too tongue-in-cheek and light-hearted. Having heard this score I am inclined to agree.

Goldsmith's take on the action is FAR more appropriate. Most people say that the score sounds triumphantly 'American'. It may be patriotic and triumphant but to say only Americans will feel empowered by the main theme is ridiculous. Anyone who appreciates good music will love it.

Track 4 'Hijacking' is seriously 7 minutes of pure action. It will totally get your pulse racing. Of that there is no doubt. But it's the only part of this particular CD that has any great action in it.

If you dig this music but only want a sampler of it on CD or if you are a big fan of Goldsmith then go ahead and buy it. If the slight running time bugs you then I suggests hunting down the complete score. Otherwise 2.5/5 for this release and 5/5 for the real thing.

4 out of 5 stars Longer music would have been nice..........2003-01-15

I wish record companies allow more freedom to record music at greater length than 30 min, especially when a disc can be filled to 80 min. The flim Air Force One was an excellent movie and the music could have been much more than it was.
still it was an good work.

4 out of 5 stars A militaristic action score.......2002-12-12

Jerry Goldsmith, along with Joel McNeely, whose music did not make it to the score release, were brought in at the last minute to replace Randy Newman, who had written a full score for the film, but was rejected by director Wolfgang Petersen. I would of liked to hear what Newman came up with and I understand that there is a bootleg score release out there somewhere. As for the music that Goldsmith wrote, it is very militaristic and patriotic, built around a solid main theme that is heard whenever the president does something heroic. It first appears in "The Parachutes", which works like somewhat like a concert suite from the film with a prominent brass section, heavy percussion, and exciting string crescendos. The end of the track contains some Russian inspired music for brass and strings that finishes it off. Some other themes occur throughout, such as a Soviet motif for the hijackers and a lovely woodwind and string love theme for the president's family in "No Security". The rest of the music is standard action music that really stands out in the breathtaking 7 and 1/2 minute cue, "The Hijackers". This track contains nonstop pounding percussion, driving brass, and thrilling string lines. The last cue "Welcome Aboard, Sir" ends the score on a positive note with the main theme exploding onto the scene one last time. I wish that there was more than 35 minutes of music for this score that got released, but it is very expensive to release a score that was recorded in L.A., so I am happy with what was released. An all out thrilling action score by the king of action music, Jerry Goldsmith.

5 out of 5 stars Music To Bless America By.......2002-07-04

How Jerry Goldsmith can work under so much pressure is beyond me. He only had a few weeks to compose this score and it was still able to create a genuine tone to the film. It not only sounds like genuine presidential/martial-type music, but it stays true to the film's scenes and the emotions of the characters. He even managed to use specifically the movie's themes and motifs in every second of his music, like with all of his scores. At the same time, his score is listenable alone on CD, like always.

A note to the angry customers, this thing is not short just to tick you off. A.F.O. was recorded in Los Angeles with a union orchestra. To be put on CD, something called "re-use fees" had to be paid, and increased with each additional second of music put on the album. We're lucky there was 35 minutes and not just 30. Jerry Goldsmith wanted more music so much, Varese was willing to pay for 5 more minutes, and that costs a lot more than you think. Good news though, Goldsmith has the score represented so well on here, it makes an expanded album seem almost unnecssary.

The score begins with the main theme, which basically tells the whole story, like a theme should. It sounds very heroic, which is to express Harrison Ford's character, the President! Then, it moves on to the first action scene (prologue), which is a combination of tense action, tragedy, and triumph.

"The Motorcade" continues on with the theme, but with a little more positive tone. Everything seems to be going fine until, "Empty Rooms". It actually comes after "The Hijacking", but was put before for better listening. "The Hijacking" is the best cue on there, and makes for one of the longest and best Goldsmith action cues. In that track, you can feel how pressured the U.S. is at getting the "situation" under control as well as the panic of being on a plane full of machine gun-wielding maniacs. Put yourself in that situation and I bet the music will pretty much sum up your feelings. That's how good Jerry is!

After so much chaos, the album settles with "No Security" which is a much softer, less patriotic version of the theme. This underscores the personal life of the First Family, and actually comes right after "The Motorcade", but is switched with "Empty Rooms" for better listening. Then, the album continues with "Free Flight", "Escape From Air Force One", and comes to a satisfying and breathtaking conclusion with "Welcome Aboard, Sir"

In short, get this if you are a fan of action music, especially Goldsmith's action music. It may not be "traditional" American music, but it is the next best thing! Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars 2 Great Goldsmith scores for the price of 1.......2000-01-27

I origonally bought this CD on the strength of the film Outland, its one of my favourite Sean Connery movies & I always liked the music, the CD also has the Capricorn 1 soundrtack which is a good bonus, both feature the usual touches of goldsmith, excellent action cues, nice moments of calm, moments of suspense etc, a good example of this being The Message on Outland, from a deleted scene from the film this cue was written for a scene where Connerys character reacts to his wife leaving him, its a slow & quite nice track which conveys nicely Connerys characters sadness. My favourite track on Outland is Hot Water, the music to the exiting chase scene in the film, while the main theme to Capricorm 1 is memorable in itself, the Cd also features a couple of unused tracks from both movies, this I feel is always a bonus. A good buy, especially for fans of the films.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful film and sountrack!.......2002-03-01

This was such an amazing movie. I've been searching for the soundtrack for a long time. While the musical score is beautiful, I too was disappointed to discover that Bette Midler's wonderful song was nowhere to be found on it.

1 out of 5 stars Where is Bette Midler's beautiful song?.......1999-12-08

I would have bought the cd if the song Bette Midler sang had been on it. "My One True Friend" is a beautiful song.

3 out of 5 stars A pleasing sound track album.......1999-08-07

I wanted to come to the defence of the Bette Midler song "My One True Friend". I think it is a beautiful song and it certainly brings out the chill bumps for me! The writers have a first class pedigree being Carole King, Carole Bayer Sager (who has written smashes with Burt Bacharach) and David Foster. This song definitely should have been on the soundtrack album.

5 out of 5 stars Emotional and touches the heart of the human soul........1999-07-26

No score can describe the heart of human loss and nature than the music to this film, which I've listened to more times than having seen the film. It truly evokes inner feelings too difficult to openly express in times of peril and heartache. It is soft and gentle, just like the tone of the film, as well as the atmosphere in a house when someone or something that means a lot is threatened to be mercilessly taken away. Truly the Academy doesn't know a genuine film score when they hear it.

5 out of 5 stars where's stevie?.......1999-03-10

IN THE TRAILER FOR THIS FILM, LANDSLIDE BY STEVIE NICKS WAS PLAYED. WHERE IS IT IN THE SOUNDTRACK?

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Score.......2006-06-18

Christopher Young wrote the score to this film..There is another "soundtrack"album available for this film, containing urban vocals, but this is the SCORE album, and it is among Young's best...It has a funky jazz groove to it while at the same time conforming to the dictum that a score must compliment the activity taking place on screen..Alas,like most score albums, this one went rather quickly out of print, and is now available only as a "collector's item"...even so,if you can afford the price of admission then by all means buy this disc...you won't be disappointed...

    5 out of 5 stars Love It.......2002-12-29

A heartfelt and telling score to fit a brilliant movie. I am in love with "Up Against The Wind" by Lori Perri. It is such a passionate song telling Cleo's demise.

    5 out of 5 stars Love It.......2002-12-29

I am totally in love with the song by Lori Perri, truly passionate and a heartfelt song even in the midst of Cleo's demise. A great score for a brilliant movie...
