The Princess and the Warrior [Soundtrack]

the princess and the warrior [soundtrack]

Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Pale 3 are Johnny Klimek, Reinhold Heil and the director of the film Tom Tykwer, the same trio behind the score for "Run Lola Run". Not only did Pale 3 compose the score, they then took portions of the music and developed them into songs much like they did with two of the tracks for "Run Lola Run". With the "Princess and the Warrior" they took their creative process a step further by developing the ambient pieces into songs, then giving the songs to the talent along with film footage inviting them to write their own lyrics to each of the songs. The end result is an amazing companion to the film providing an audio journey to the dark future of finding the wrong person at the right time.

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

5 out of 5 stars Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11

I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great music, for all ages!.......2005-11-09

I was introduced to this soundtrack in a college acting class. All of us in the class were obsessed with the music, but we were also artsy theatre kids, it's almost expected for us to enjoy music like this.

I am now a high school teacher and am using this soundtrack in one of my classes. My students upon hearing the first track wanted to know what it was and where they could get it. These are just "normal" high school kids.

For music to touch that many different types of people is truely an achievement.

3 out of 5 stars Haunting Ending Piano Solo Is Missing From This CD.......2005-10-30

It took me about an hour Googling around to find "Nothing Really Blue," by The Penguin Cafe Orchestra, the haunting solo piano piece that closes the film, "The Princess And The Warrior." It is NOT included on the soundtrack CD and it is NOT clearly referenced during the credit roll in the film. But this beautiful, stark and mysterious piano composition plays as the two main characters drive away from their troubles and towards their sanctuary on the desolate coast and as the camera slowly pulls back in a long helicopter shot. Check out The Penguin Cafe Orchestra CDs titled: "Preludes, Airs and Yodels," and "Union Cafe." They both include this solo piano piece.

5 out of 5 stars The Music is great...a little off beat.......2005-09-30

I purchase The Princess and the Warrior from Amazon.com on 08/26/2005. The soundtrack was suggested by a friend and is a little off beat. I love the music. I enjoyed it very much. It really makes the movie. The film is also very good. If you liked Run Lola Run, you'll like the movie.

5 out of 5 stars The Princess & the Warrior soundtrak.......2005-09-18

Beautiful soundtrak, very dream like & nostagic of the movie

5 out of 5 stars For Fans Of The Film Only!.......2002-11-20

Anyone who has seen Tom Tykwer's epic third film, "The Princess & The Warrior", knows that there must have been a lot of money floating around when it was being made. The same can be said of the soundtrack also, as the co-composing team of Tykwer, Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek, under the newfound moniker Pale 3, have struck gold after cooking up a storm with their rave-flavoured accompaniment to "Run Lola Run". And like the film, the follow-up could not be anymore different, as the thumping beats of "Lola" are exchanged for heartbreaking strings and slow-burning stunners that add to the film's emotional texture unlike most plop-pop soundtracks that are geared to make money.

One nice little subversion is that Pale 3 have taken various score sections from the film itself and have transformed them into stirring pop songs that interlink with various moments and characters within the film. On the whole, it works, but will leave curious listeners who either haven't seen the film or didn't like it cold, as you're not going to feel moved when Louise Rhodes trills to chilling effect "I knew I'd find you there / Now our story can really start" unless you adored the film, not to mention Sissi and Bodo. That said, the best songs are Skin's "You Can't Find Peace" (singing as though she's in unspeakable pain), Rhodes' "Escape (Afraid Of No One)" (amazing ending!) and Beth Hirsch's "The Tunnel" (sampling one of the best score pieces from the film). And Franka Potente continues to follow Marianne Faithful in the name of spoken word with "Fly With Me", which again soars or falls judging on how much you enjoyed the film.

The other half of the CD is score cues taken from the film itself, and again highlights the amazing versatility of Pale 3. Combining low-fi electronica with some stirring string arrangements (recorded in California - classy!), the talented troika masterfully crank up the tension (hear "The Roof") as well as absorb the listener with soothing melody (hear "Opening (Sissi Search)"). But the humdinger here is "The Escape", which sounds exactly the opposite of what the title suggests. My advice: watch the film, be amazed, then blast this as loud as you can from your CD players! Truly wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-02-02

I'm a bit different than most reviewers in that I'm not a hardcore Xena fan. I've only seen parts of the series and the only DVD I own so far is the 10th Anniversary collection, which I recently received as a gift. Because I haven't seen a significant number of episodes, Bitter Suite took me totally by surprise. I hadn't known they'd done musicals!

At first I sort of rebelled against the idea, and the first part of the show didn't really appeal to me. But as it went on I adjusted my expectations and it drew me in further and further. In the end, the lyrics, music, and especially Lucy's singing really blew me away. So much so that I watched the episode a second time within a few days of first viewing it, which is something I've never done before.

I still have a hard time believing that this quality of a rock opera style musical was done for a one hour television show, and not even an A-string, big budget show. Much of the music is haunting and full of emotional impact. The final songs can bring tears to my eyes, and I haven't even seen the shows leading up to this one to be able to feel the full effect. I couldn't seem to get the music out of my head, so I finally had to buy the soundtrack CD. Not something I would have ever previously envisioned myself doing as a more casual Xena fan. So that should hopefully attest to this amazing piece of television musical work. The only drawback is that I wish all the songs were split out individually, but I understand why it was done this way.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely not bitter.......2006-02-23

Any doubt of Lucy Lawless's ability to sing will be wiped away after listening to her heartfelt plea for forgiveness in "Love of Your Love." Kevin Smith's baritone voice is wickedly beautiful and sexy. Though the listening pleasure is short (only 9 songs) the fact that these songs came from this genre was incredible. I have to say though, the instrumentals on this CD was not as provocative and in depth as the other orchestration from Mr. LoDuca.

4 out of 5 stars Well, if you liked the episode..........2005-10-17

While not quite the entire episode ripped to an audio file, it almost feels like it is.

The tracks are more like parts of the episode between commercial breaks than broken out by individual song. That's why I didn't give it 4 stars. This sounds great so if you've seen the episode and want the music on CD, buy it.
If you haven't and are thinking you are buying a song collection, this is more of a concept album that tells a story, being that it is the majority of the sound from the episode.

Anyway, I think this was miles better than the Buffy musical, and it was done first. I am the master of geography.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Cd.......2005-08-02

Just like the episode, this cd is awesome. The only downside to this, is that it's the exact lenghth of the episode and no more longer. The music is great and can teach you a thing or two about friendship and how no matter what happens, you both hurt on the inside the same, and no one hurts more than the other. Xena and Gab realize this in the episode after blaming each other saying it's thier fault when it was both thier faults. This music really stands out with the message and you will listen to this over and over again. I loved this cd so much I listened to it so much in one week. If you like the show, you will love this cd.

4 out of 5 stars melt into you.......2004-10-19

It's almost worth buying just for the song Melt into Me. I can remember the scene with Ares.

5 out of 5 stars Love.......2006-11-04

This is one of the best cds I have ever heard. Lucy Lawless is extraordinary.

5 out of 5 stars IT'S NO LYRE. . . THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM.......2003-04-24

Fans of "Xena-Warrior Princess" will find every soundtrack album from the series enjoyable. This is not only exceptional. . . it will be enjoyed by people who might only be slightly familiar with the TV series. . . and even by people who never watched the TV series at all. It's just a great album of music and song. It's not "heavy" and depressing. . .but a lighthearted and talented collection of song performances by Lucy and the cast and singers from that one memorable "musical satire" they did.
You can't help but smile ear to ear and move when you hear Joxer lead the party with "Dancin' In The Moonlight". He just will tear it up. . . and you'll know why they named him "joxer".
"People Got To Be Free" to my ears sounds even better than the original version by "The Rascals". And one of my all time favorites is given The Warrior Princess treatment: WAR (what is it good for? . . . absolutely nothin'!
So, if you loved Xena you'll love this album. The TV series is history now. . .and this album is one of the best memories of that history. If you never saw Xena. . . this albu,m is your best introduction.-- Thanks Lucy Lawless. . .thanks for being "Xena" and thanks for the music and song. We're awaiting you solo efforts now as well.

5 out of 5 stars all about lyre lyre.......2002-01-07

i have this cd and i think the music is cheerful, you can certainly sing along with it.Lucy proves once again that she is more then just a great actress but a fantastic singer as well. i would urge anyone to buy it.it is that good.

3 out of 5 stars Not as Good as the Other Xena Soundtracks.......2001-12-30

This CD is a must for Xena fans, but not as enjoyable as the other Xena soundtracks. Joseph Lo Duca is an excellent composer and the show would not have been nearly as good without his muscial genius to create mood in every single episode. The Lyre Lyre musical just isn't as good as a Lo Duca original musical would have been. Lyre Lyre is fun, especially "Sisters are Doin' It for Themselves" featuring the lovely voice of Lucy Lawless. "Dancin' in the Moonlight" is refreshing. "We Can Work it Out" didn't make it to the television episode, and it's a crying shame. It's quite possibly the best track on the CD, once again featuring Lucy's voice. If you're a Xena fan or a Lucy Lawless fan, definitely buy this one, but not before you buy the other Xena soundtracks.

5 out of 5 stars On par with Broadway Musical Compilations.......2001-11-02

This CD has become one of the most played CDs in my collection. The range of musical styles / songs presented on this CD makes it a great mixed CD. I once threw it into a pile of CD's that were played at a graduation party and the non-Xenites LOVED IT. Lucy Lawless shows the versatility of her voice and Ted Raimi's rendition of Dancing in the Moonlight brings a smile to my face every time I hear it. This is a must have CD for every Xena fan that enjoys fun spirited music. Joseph LoDuca produced a classic!

5 out of 5 stars Just Fantastic!.......2007-05-09

Xena is a fantastic TV series that really deserves more respect. The music is incredible. I am a studio musician, and this is just top-notch work.

5 out of 5 stars Edgy, earthy and primal!.......2006-10-02

While the "warrior" part was self-evident, I was never quite able to figure out through the entire run of the show what made Xena a "princess" (not mention why characters in Renaissance, Medieval and Hell's Angels garb would be mingling with Greek Gods and Julius Caesar ...). Nonetheless, two things near and dear to my heart--the music and the martial arts--drew me in as a viewer and helped me overlook the historical discrepancies. And in the process, Joseph LoDuca became one of my favorite soundtrack composers! He does a wonderful job of combining esoteric world-music influences with standard soundtrack fare to produce a rich tapestry sound, culture and emotion--something that really stands out from "same old." His striking main title for the Xena series is like a cross between Basil Poledouris' intricately percussive soundtrack for "Conan the Barbarian" and the dissonant music sung by female choirs in Bulgaria, both of which are majorly cool to begin with. Blended together, such styles are truly stunning. The other, widely-varied tracks on this album are everything you'd expect from a saga about a kickass warrior woman - intense, distinctive and often exotic. They're also as eclectic and anachronistic as the show itself, but all in good fun. Any soundtrack music, particularly the short snippets required for TV scenes, can result in a choppy, disjointed listening experience. But that's the fault of the medium, not the music. And despite the varied musical styles within LoDuca's score, his instrumentation and theme repetition makes for a definite sense of continuity through these thirty tracks. This CD is the first of at least six albums which feature LoDuca's efforts to bring the many moods of Xena to life, and is a great sampling of his work. If you like this album, you may enjoy his other soundtracks too, such as those for the companion "Hercules" series, and the movie "Brotherhood of the Wolf." If you're intrigued by that dissonant female singing, check out the real thing in CDs such as "Voices of Life" by the Bulgarian Women's Choir and Angelite, "The Magical Voices of Bulgaria" by the Bulgarian National Folk Ensemble, "Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares" by the Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female Vocal Choir, and "The Great Voices of Bulgaria" by the Women's Choir of Sofia. And of course, don't miss Basil Poledouris' sountrack to the movie "Conan the Barbarian," the granddaddy of all fantasy soundtracks!

4 out of 5 stars The original is usually the best.......2006-02-23

It is well worth the money. The songs from this CD reaches out to the primal senses. Glede Ma Glede is riveting when heard in its entirety. Lucy's composition of Burial shows another dynamic aspect of Lucy's talent for singing. Gabby's Dance" is a feel good diddy that just makes you want to get up and dance no matter where or what you are doing. Unless you read the titles, it is difficult to determine which episodes these songs first aired. The final song, the extended version of the XWP's theme song is inspiring and speaks to the Xena in all of us. It's a must have CD for any Xena fan or any music fan.

5 out of 5 stars XENA - Original Soundtrck.......2005-10-06

I have been lisiting to the sound track on line and had been trying to figure away to down load. found the easest way was to purchase and load into PC. Which leads into the reason I enjoy it so very much. I am going to add the Original title and burial into the sound system and use them for opening and closing. That way I go on and off line with XENA. Later I will slowly add the rest as required for certain sounds. I am sure thefollowing is an unusual request, but is it possible to see a photo of Joseph LoDuca. Thank you Gunner

5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2002-03-19

This is really the best of the Xena soundtracks--it has all the classical themes (The Gauntlet, Glede Ma Glede, The Wrath of Callisto, just to name a few), as well as showcasing the voices of the Bulgarian Women's Choir. If you like Xena, you will LOVE this CD...

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!.......2007-01-03

I LOVE THIS CD! I WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE WHO LIKES DIFFERENT MUSIC WHICH WOULD INCLUDE DRUMS AND CHANTING, ORCHESTRA PEICES, WOODEN FLUTE PEICES AND EERY YET WONDERFUL MUSIC. A GREAT MUSICAL JOURNEY.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!!!.......2001-11-19

Mr. LoDuca has done an excellent job with this CD for Xena fans alike to enjoy. I have Xena Volume 6 and that is all I ever listen to now, but now I can listen to a different variety. Every single song from Main Title to Imposter is just great and done exquisetly. It has a fantastic variety from Season 2 and I especially like Caipoera Fight because it reminds me of the episode Destiny and when Xena and Velasca fight on the ropes for the Ambrosia. I would recommend this to anybody even if they don't like the television show they would definetly like this CD. I would also recommend this to any die hard Xena fan as well.

4 out of 5 stars A cool soundtrack.......2001-06-29

I'm a fan of good TV / Movie scores. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Trevor Rabin's work. In between that, the Xena soundtracks by Joseph LoDuca has been keeping me entertained. He has a style / sound all his own. The success of Xena Warrior Princess not only comes from the talented people who were in front and behind the camera, but also to Joseph LoDuca whose music was as important to the show as anything else. And now that the show ended it's run, what a better way to relive one of the most original programs to come to TV in a while, than to play this, and the other CD's in the Xena Warrior Princess collection.

In closing I would like to say that I believe that composers who work in film like Joseph LoDuca, Trevor Rabin, and John Williams, just to name a few, are really the Beethoven's of modern times.

5 out of 5 stars A superb expansion of Xena's musical world.......2001-02-05

"Xena: Warrior Princess--Volume 2" is an excellent follow up to the first CD of music from the popular television series. Composer Joseph LoDuca has produced music which maintains the distinctive style he established for the series: exotic, tribal, female-powered music with a Middle Eastern/Mediterranean flavor. But on this CD LoDuca widens his musical range, even including some delightful comic material.

The CD begins with the familiar (but still thrilling!) main title music, and moves on to a marvelous selection of new pieces. Highlights include the haunting, melancholy "At Mother's Tomb"; "Sword Play," with its excellent percussion effects; and "Homeland," which makes great use of female vocals (both solo and group).

Some of the more colorful tracks include "Stowaway," which incorporates Celtic-sounding elements; "Solstice Night," a lullaby-like song which employs a children's chorus to impressive effect; and "More Fun and Games/Feather Fight," which includes musical parodies of both Italian western movie music and a popular Christmas carol. And of course, there is the delightful "Ballad of Joxer the Mighty," a parodic gem with a Monty Pythonesque flavor. Sample lyrics to "Joxer": "Joxer the mighty, he's very tidy / Everyone admires him; he's so handsome it's a sin."

This CD demonstrates that Joseph LoDuca is one of television's most innovative and talented composers. Diverse and rewarding, "Xena--Volume 2" is an essential disc for those interested in the art of fantasy/adventure music.

4 out of 5 stars LoDuca...keep 'em comin........2000-06-27

Though not as wall to wall brilliant as the first compilation, this one has some music not to be missed!

For one, track #2. Such sadness and beauty, melancholy and comfort. I can't hear this track enough!

Then on to track 3! LoDuca storms the heavens with his choral comps and arrangements with the orchestra!

Track 4! This man reminds me so much of Williams. This track evokes memories of the second Indy movie (Temple of Doom). Relentless, serious horns and the insistent ride cymabal.

There really is so much genius in this edition as well. Oddly, the only one I didn't really care for is the most popular cut: Joxer's song. Don't get me wrong, it's enjoyable, but it doesn't have the power and beauty of many of the other cuts on the album that I like to listen to. As a composer, Joxer's ballad isn't his magnum opus obviously, but it's a fun one. Xenites should enjoy it.

But, my God, man! Some one in Hollywood start using this man in movies! With so many potential heir apparents to Williams, this man is not even mentioned? Travesty.

Okay, one more track I have to mention. #7. The man can use percussion like I've only heard Williams and McNeely. Probably better. And track 11. A rousing use of meter change and bagpipes and -- of course -- percussion.

For the love of God: GET THE CD!

4 out of 5 stars Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

5 out of 5 stars Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2001-12-25

Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2001-11-30

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!

4 out of 5 stars A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

5 out of 5 stars Total Xena fan!!.......2003-03-27

I just got this soundtrack today!! As soon as I put it in, I was so happy!! This is the soundtrack that Ive been wanting forever but havent gotten around to buying!! The first song that I listened to was Everybody Dance now! It sent shivers up my spin and I was dancing all around my house!! This is the song that they play in A tale of Two Muses at the end when they all do that big number!! Its Awesome!! And at the end of the song Xena vs. Alti, it has the music that they play during Xena and Gabs crucification! This is truly one of the best Xena soundtracks I've ever heard!! Definatley worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music on this Soundtrack.......2002-02-09

This CD has a number of tracks with Asian and Indian influence. It's a really great mix of tracks for those of you who know and love Xena, and for those non-Xena people who enjoy "World Music" sounds.

This is the first Xena soundtrack I've bought, and because of it's beautiful music, it won't be the last!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Season 4.......2000-09-15

That's just what this CD is all about - the best music you could have from the 4th season. If you haven't wantch the episodes, and you listen to the music, the story is there, in the notes, in the segmants, in the different India, Chin, Turangi places, and then some. The one track that really got me, just like in the episode of Adventures In The Sin Trade, Part 2, was the Xena vs. Alti, when in the end you hear the music of Xena's look into her future (in Ideas of March). You have to cry when you recall that. But let's not forget the fun parts - the last two tracks: Everybody Dance Now from Tale of Two Muses. Great to listen to, easy and fun, and our funny song in the end, with Ted Raimi there in I'm in Heaven... Just brings a smile to my face everytime I listen to this. This is the BEST of Season 4!

5 out of 5 stars absolutely spectacular.......2000-04-18

In the fourth installment of the XWP soundtrack, Joe LoDoca has really done it. Having a taste for world music, he has taken it here to the max. We get to travel from Chin, to Sibiria to India, all in one hour. This CD covers XWP's season four and a small portion of season three. The music which represents the setting for the episodes is influenced by various traditions, from east Asia to what I believe native American culture (in the northern Amazons' tracks). All arranged under the brriliance of this composer. When I first heard this CD, I was speechless, it just sounded perfect to me. This CD is recomended to anyone who is spiritualy oriented. Well done, Mr LoDuca!

4 out of 5 stars Xena cd volume 4.......1999-12-29

I'm a huge fan of this show. I have all 3 prior cd's. I enjoyed this cd more than the 1st because it doesn't have all the funeral durges of volume one. I like the Indian music. Definitely a cd of last season's (music) trip through India. If you're into it I suggest buying it here. I wish I did because I payed way too much elsewhere. It would've been even better if they would've added the theme song to this volume for the heck of it. In my opinion at Amazon's price it's a good buy.
