Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

It's ironic that Youssou N'Dour coproduced Specialist in All Styles. After all, it was the emergence of N'Dour's upbeat mbalax music in the early '80s that hurried the passing of Orchestra Baobab, which had been the most popular band in Senegal for 10 years. Baobab's Afro-Latin blend was unique, but it sounded like fond memory next to the in-your-face mbalax. Following up the reissue in 2002 of the legendary 1982 album Pirates Choice, Baobab has returned to active duty after a 15-year hiatus. Specialist features many of the original members and recaptures the classic sound. The band revives great older Baobab songs like "On Verra Ça" and "Ndongoy Daara," brings in a few folk tunes, and rounds out the album with strong new material. "Homage A Tonton Ferrer" is a rollicking vocal tour de force featuring Cuba's Ibrahim Ferrer and N'Dour. Moreover, the band is tight throughout, with fantastic solos coming from guitarist Barthelemy Attisso and saxophonist Issa Cissoko. --Tad Hendrickson
Album Description
The reissue of Dakar band's 1982 world music classic Pirates Choice (early 2002), was a breakout success in the UK, Europe and the US. So much so, in fact, that the response sparked a reunion, a tour and a return to the studio to record Specialist In All Styles, the group's first new album in 15 years. 9 tracks. Slipcase. World Circuit. 2002.
Customer Reviews:
Majestic music!!.......2006-07-20
I was only recently introduced to the music of Orchestra Baobab and what a fantastic discovery their music is!
Formed in Senegal in 1970, the group took its name from a nightclub they performed at, named after the Baobab tree found in the African savannah, and renowned for its majesty and endurance, qualities the band shares.
Their musical style sounds to me like a fusion of Cuban, and African Highlife music; loads of prominent melodic guitars, horns (especially explosive sax), and rich percussion. The lyrics (on this CD) are largely in Wolof and French, dealing with themes including anti corruption messages, a dying parent, and the importance of having integrity. However, music, especially this beautiful, is a universal language.
`Specialist In All Styles' is their first CD in 20 years, co produced by Youssou N'Dour, the album comprises 9 tracks - mostly reworked versions of their classics with a few new songs thrown in - with a rich, live (it was recorded live over 10 days) party feel to the sound. The CD comes in either a yellow cover (shown here) or blue.
Tunes range from the very rhythmic upbeat guitar driven opening cut `Bul Ma Miin', the downtempo `Sutukun' with lovely guitar licks, the very Latin sounding `Jiin Ma Jiin Ma', the gently shuffling `Hommage À Tonton Ferrer' features Ibrahim Ferrer & Youssou N'Dour, and the more upbeat Cuban sounding horn filled `El Son Te Llama'.
A beautiful CD, and a worthy addition to any music collection.
Cuban music with African vocal overtones .......2004-09-02
Orchestra Baobob is an old band - they've been around well over 20 years, and the Latin tinge is both unusual and powerful, here, setting their music apart from competitors and creating a niche all their own.
Slightly Overrated.......2003-12-02
Unless this is your only O.B. album, there's some filler here. Hommage A Tonton Ferrer is essentially a shorter version (with different lyrics) of Utrus Horas, the first track on Pirates Choice, and the longer version is better played and more hypnotic. El Son Te Llama is a faster, shorter cover of the better-played version from On Verra Ca. (The original version, by the way, is also available on Putumayo Presents Afro-Latino, an excellent compilation.) The remaining seven songs are quite good and offer plenty of variety. One only wishes O.B. could have re-entered the studio, after so many years, with totally original material.
A legendary (if unknown) Senagalese band.......2003-07-20
I was visiting Quebec City in mid-July and Orchestra Baobab happened to be playing live at the Quebec City Music Festival. It was an extraordinary electric guitar/saxophone sound with soaring vocals. Although the crowd was French, the music was universal. Orchestra Baobab absolutely blew the doors off the joint. A great live experience based on material from "Specialist In All Styles." You won't go wrong listening to this music.
You Need This.......2003-07-07
I was exposed to the Orchestra a few months back, and I was blown away by the funky rhythms of this group. I recently saw them at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, and they gae such an amazing show -the music was basically from this latest album, but hearing them live let me know just how great a group like this is. The audience was the widest cross-section of people I've ever seen at a concert. From young black kids to middle aged French people to Senegalese and Nigerian, to Columbian and German!
African music is the root of all musical styles, and the Orchestra Baobab demonstrate that music is truly universal.
Tracks like Om Verra Ca sport some of the funkiest bass-lines this side of George Clinton, and even though you won't necessarily be able to understand the lyrics (in French or Waloof) the magical voices of the various singers transcend the listener to a state of pure joy.
If you listen to this and don't like, then I don't know what to say.
I've been expanding my listening to West African music, mainly through Black President Fela Kuti, but this is a welcome difference that we'll get you groove at the house party, the car or the club.

Just Gorgeous.......2002-06-09
This is one of Gene Pitney's most beautiful compilations of classic love songs (along with another great album of standards, "Young and Warm and Wonderful").
If you know these songs and you know Gene Pitney's voice, and you think he has a way with a ballad, what more could you ask? It's more than beautiful, it redefines many of these songs. Try Gene's "Cara Mia"...superior to the original! Gene and the Platters' hits, "My Prayer" and "Only You" were meant for each other. And Gene's "Unchained Melody" is one of those recordings you can put on "repeat" and just let it play until your heart breaks. It is stunning in its understatement and a profoundly moving closer to this LP.
In short, this is pretty near perfect from one of the greatest voices of our lifetime. Buy this with confidence, you couldn't possibly be disappointed.

Great Score from a master........2006-11-30
John Barry's score to "The Specialist" is great. Too bad I can't say that about the movie. I don't understand how a score as good as this one can go to such a terrible movie. Barry uses wonderful themes in this score and great dramatic cues such as the tracks "The First Bomb" and "Explosive Trent" you can almost imagine what's happening just by listening to them. If you like John Barry scores, I highly recommend this one.
What a waste!.......2004-03-29
Please do not watch the film , it is terrible!,. But the score is , again, John Barry in his perfection.
The melody is beautiful. The orchestrations terrific. i am still wondering why , sometimes terrible film , have these beautiful scores. What a waste.
This score is a must have for all the fans of Barry and for those who like great music in general

STUNNING, MANCINI, HIS MUSIC.......2004-09-14
I always admire Mancini's talent in music. The reason I purchased this cd was because of "The Windmills of your Mind." The arrangment and the presentation is by far the best I've heard so far. As a matter of fact, I own couple CDs of Mancini, and I thought it could be redundant to purchase this cd on top of whatever I have bought.
Well, this entire CD proved me wrong! It is a must to add this cd to my music collection!
The whole album is sooooo refreshing! With the new arrangment of each piece and the stunning performance of the orchestra, each and every single track on the cd sounds very different, but yet familiar. The "savor" of each theme song matches perfectly with the theme of its related movie. What a nice job Mancini did together with the performance of the musicians. In this cd, you will get no typical Mancini's style (i.e. the light and relaxing lounge music); what you get is the classy and stunning orchestral sound instead. In another words, you'll get a different flavor of Mancini's talent on all these familiar sound!
If you love Mancini's music, you will not be disappointed with this one.
If you are not familar with Mancini's mucis, try this and I am sure you will love the album as well.
