An Improvement Over the First Score.......2007-03-01
While Michael Kamen provided a last minute replacement score when John Ottman was busy with other projects that was mainly electronic in nature with a minimal orchestra, John Ottman provides an orchestral score that is everything that the first X-Men score was not. However, Ottman managed to provide a sound that honored the original Kamen score, only with more thematic presence.
There are several themes in the score. The first is the main theme for the X-Men, which is an upbeat march for brass, which is largely featured in "Suite from X2" and "We're Here to Stay", while bits and pieces of the theme are interweaved throughout the score. The most prominent theme in the score is Jean Grey's theme, which is an awe-inspiring theme complete with chorus and full orchestra. It is my favorite theme in the score. As Ottman explains during the creation of the score on the DVD, there are also motifs for Nightcrawler, Pyro, Magneto, and Mystique, in which samples of them can be found in the first track. Nightcrawler's motif can also be found in "Finding Faith", Pyro's motif can be found in "Playing with Fire", Magneto's motif can be found in "Magneto's Old Tricks", and Mystique's motif can be found in "Sneaky Mystique". "Mansion Attack" is a 7-minute action cue which features dynamic brass writing, percussion hits, and piano strikes.
The only minor difficulty with some of the music is that it can take a while for it to get going in parts, as lots of it is "filler" music. But, once the thematic material and the action music are present, they really take off. With the additional work of editing the film, Ottman managed to multi-task, creating a great score for a great film. Ottman did not return to score the third X-Men film, due to his work on Superman Returns, so John Powell provided that score.
Great Soundtrack!.......2006-11-02
Great score to the second movie of the X-men film. Great themes and great music for a soundtrack. I do wish that they used the"White house attack,Alklali lake,Nightcrawler theme in the church, the end of the movie theme, and alot other themes. The score was better then the first first score. The first Score by Micheal Kamen sort of sucked. Only 5 good themes out of 12. And the score was so short. But the very good thing about X2 was it was atleast an 1 hour long instead of 38 minutes long. John Ottman did his very best with X2!
A MasterPiece.......2005-08-21
I am a fan of Xmen and this score fits the movie like a glove. I only listen to the Suite over and over and for the NightCrawler openeing scene music, its Mozart: Requiem and the title is Requiem in D Minor: III. I looked for it for about 3 days and finally found it. I reccomend 3 others soundtrack scores: Hulk, Red Dragon, and Beautiful Mind. All have about 2 tracks that can be listened to over and over again. Also Kill Bill 1. Can stop listening to White Lightning. Even my son Brahiem loves to listen to it. One extra tip, get Morpheus, and if you cant find the song you are looking for, get Limewire, but delete it as soon as you are done with it because it comes loaded with spyware.
Great Score!.......2004-10-12
I was, as others will state, dissapointed with the first X-men score by the late Michael Kamen. Not that it wasn't good, it just lacked thematic material and use of it. It worked it the film wonderfully which is what I guess, was meant to do. Aside from the film, however it didn't work as well. That aside, the X2 score was wonderful. It workes both ways and has a wonderful powerful theme to it. Allot of the music reminded me of the two Star Trek scores that James Horner scored, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. I guess that makes since because the ending of X2 is similar to the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Also on the DVD for X2 John Ottman talkes about how he was trying to make the score sound similar to that of Star Trak II, so there you go. I say if you love epic scores, and you love the X-Men movies, buy this now. It's truly great!
