Jessie Nelson's poignant tale of a mentally challenged man named Sam (Sean Penn) who recruits a lawyer to help him regain custody of his young daughter leans heavily on the lead character's obsession with Beatles songs, and his innocent trust in their wisdom and emotional truth. It's an artistic gambit that shrewdly lends itself to this mostly rewarding collection of Beatles covers by a wide range of contemporary artists, many of whom no doubt leapt at the chance to record a treasured song by their own musical heroes. The renditions are by and large faithful, and inform the elemental genius of the originals by the strength and variety of the artist's voices alone. The husband-wife team of Aimee Mann and Michael Penn (Sean's brother) can't help but find resonance in "Two of Us," just as Nick Cave's latter-day, heart-on-his-sleeve crooner infatuation makes "Let It Be" all his own. It's the reinterpretations that are riskier. While Paul Westerberg's stripped-down, nasal reading of "Nowhere Man" perceptively underscores Lennon's inherent Dylan fetish and Howie Day turns "Help!" from anxious plea to desperate dirge, Grandaddy smugly alt-rocks the energy right out of "Revolution." The Beatles hardly need anyone to burnish their reputation, but this album goes a long way toward underscoring their most undersung legacy as rock's most transcendent melting pot. -Jerry McCulley

Beatle's lyrics combined with today's musical talent. A great combination! If you love the Beatles, you'll love this CD. I keep ordering "one more", it's taking care of a lot of people on my holiday gift giving list!

I REALLY ENJOYED THE MUSIC WHEN I WATCHED THE VIDEO AND FELT INCLINED TO BUY THE SOUND TRACK. I AM GLAD I DID. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTD.

4 out of 5 stars Disc of Beatles Covers Offers Lots of Room for Reinterpretation, Some Quite Wonderful.......2006-07-21

I have to admit I have never seen the 2001 movie from which this soundtrack is based, nor do I know the significance of the Beatles music to the characters. However, once I heard Rufus Wainwright's acoustic cover of "Across the Universe", a touching performance that puts his yearning, mournful voice to good use, I was curious what other surprises could be in store on this disc. I later found out the reason these musicians were recruited for the recording was a matter of economics. Producer Andy Gershon wanted to use the original Beatles recordings, but apparently, Michael Jackson, who owned the rights to the Lennon-McCartney catalogue, was charging $300K for each song they recorded. As it turns out, the resulting disc is pretty solid, offering a great variety of reinterpretations of familiar songs - some quite wonderful, others less so but none too painfully.

Husband-and-wife folk rockers Aimee Mann and Michael Penn kick things off with a pleasing version of the optimistic "Two of Us". Pleasing also describes Sarah McLachlan's take on "Blackbird", which is greatly aided by Sean Ashby's delicate strumming. The pace picks up with the Wallflowers' jaunty "I'm Looking Through You" complete with Rami Jaffee's Austin Powers-sounding keyboards and Jackson Browne providing harmony vocals. Eddie Vedder's uniquely scratchy vocal delivery is well served by "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" where he accompanies himself ably on guitar and harmonica. Ben Harper gets into an appropriately psychedelic mood for "Strawberry Fields Forever" with particularly lush strings and fulsome horns, though he gets carried away with the bombastic ending.

Things start to fluctuate at this point in the disc. Sheryl Crow sounds somnambulant and rather constricted on a country-twanged "Mother Nature's Son", a sub-par choice for her slick performing style; and the plaintive Ben Folds barely registers on the too-brief "Golden Slumbers". In the one track that sounds like a Fab Four impersonation (or more accurately, a Beatlemania facsimile), the Vines cover "I'm Only Sleeping" in a comparatively generic manner. The Stereophonics make "Don't Let Me Down" sound like a mid-1970's Rod Stewart pop-rocker, while the Black Crowes put their familiar blues-oriented stamp on the most psychedelic of Beatles songs, "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds".

Chocolate Genius, led by Marc Anthony Thompson, refashions John Lennon's touching paean to his mother, "Julia", into a hazy dirge that actually brings a surprising resonance to the song. However, sounding a bit too much like MacLachlan, singer-songwriter Heather Nova lends little distinction to her version of "We Can Work It Out", granted one of the most lightweight songs in the Lennon-McCartney canon. Howie Day effectively slows down "Help!" into an atmospheric, almost halting plea of quiet desperation. Dylan sound-alike Paul Westerberg croaks through "Nowhere Man" with little flair; and in perhaps the biggest departure from the original, the now-defunct indie band Grandaddy turns "Revolution" into a chugging slow-poke rocker. On the final track, Aussie musician Nick Cave lends his recognizably barren style to a somewhat desultory "Let It Be". It's a mixed bag for sure, but what really comes across is the unbeatable craftsmanship and magical yin-and-yang perfection of Lennon and McCartney.

5 out of 5 stars Strawberry Fields Forever!...FIVE STARS PLUS for this music!.......2006-05-09

It will always be incredibly challenging to match the artistic talent that The Beatles possessed. Nevertheless, this set of songs by the artists on this CD is as good as it gets to achieving a proper, respectful tribute to The Beatles with thoughtful and passionate cover songs.

The CD has a whopping 17 tracks for almost an hour of music from the movie (or inspired by the movie) I Am Sam. The music was beautifully woven into the movie; but even with just this CD you'll be blown away! It's a must-have for fans of The Beatles, the artists here, and fans of great rock everywhere.

The CD starts off strong with a rendition of "Two Of Us" by Aimee Mann and Michael Penn. I think their personal relationship helped make them harmonize so well for this song. The Black Crowes do an excellent job with the musical arrangement for "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds;" the drums are first-class! Sheryl Crow injects a great country music accent to "Mother Nature's Son." Sarah McLachlan performs a very sensitive rendition of "Blackbird;" and the CD ends beautifully with one of my very favorite Beatles songs, "Let It Be" performed by Nick Cave with Chaz Jankel on piano. Awesome!

Amazon writes that some of the "reinterpretations (on this album)...are riskier." I don't agree. While risks were taken, you won't know it! For example, Grandaddy does a great job of adding their own spice to "Revolution" and Paul Westerberg's voice was rather pleasing to my ear on "Nowhere Man."

The quality of the sound is excellent; and all of the musical arrangements are very thoughtfully produced. The liner notes come with a few color pictures from the motion picture I Am Sam; and you also get the song credits.

Overall, this CD is the product of an exceptionally talented group of artists who perform a noticeably sensitive suite of covers of great Beatles songs. This album will touch a nerve in you and leave you wondering why they couldn't have recorded even more. The singers expressed even the finest of nuances in the meanings of every word in every song; and I treasure this album as one of my preferred CDs. If this were a vinyl album I would have worn the grooves off of it long ago.

5 out of 5 stars Touching Movie, Beautiful Soundtrack.......2006-04-15

The music on this soundtrack compliments the movie alot. They're deep songs that fall into a deep story of a mentally ill man fighting for his right to care for his daughter. The songs on this CD are all meaningfull. They are all based off of Beatles songs. This album is 100% worth buying along with the movie.

The much anticipated follow-up to Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, Magnolia features a specially orchestrated soundtrack, largely written and performed by Aimee Mann ('Til Tuesday member and sadly overlooked solo artist). Mann's voice has always been a suitable vehicle for conveying emotional turmoil and indelible sadness, and several tracks here ("Build That Wall," "You Do," "Driving Sideways") do so with the rich melodicism that informs her best work. Producer Jon Brion's sprightly horn arrangements for "Momentum" are an unexpected (though not completely unwelcome) splash of cold water. Only Mann's cover of the Harry Nilsson-penned Three Dog Night hit "One" backfires, as it simply doesn't deliver the same effective climax as the original. The two Supertramp tracks from their Breakfast in America LP tacked on at album's end are incongruous (though they cut down the degrees of separation between them and Mann to an incredible one!). However, for anyone with an interest in Mann's melodic songwriting, there are eight worthy originals waiting for you. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Mann....Oh Mann..........2007-04-25

This review refers to the soundtrack of "Magnolia"(CD)
see below for link to the film score

"Magnolia" was a one of a kind film. Not only for it's amazing cast, unique story and great filming, but the soundtrack is one that will touch you to your very core. Aimee Mann's words and music are stirring, and tell a story of life that is so relateable, that P.T. Anderson wrote the screenplay based on her works, all the different character stories that converge stemming from the character of Claudia. Don't worry though, if you are fan of Mann, but have not seen this film, this is an album that stands on it's own. One that you will never seem to get enough of.

The CD has 13 tracks from the film, every one a winner. Most are written and performed(9 of the tracks) by Mann, and even the opening with "One" not written by Mann, she makes it her own with a fresh take and the mood is set. "Momentum", "Build That Wall" "Deathly", "Driving Sideways", and 'You Do" follow and the words and music have such feeling you cannot helped be touched by the story they tell. One of human emotions that you will either relate to or be touched by. "Nothing is Good Enough" is a fine instrumental, that needs no words. Mann's final two selections are 'Wise Up" and "Save Me". Supertramp adds their wonderful talents with "Goodbye Stranger", 'Logical Song" both excellent tunes that I find nice for drive time, as well as "Dreams" from Gabrielle" . The album closes with "Magnolia" from John Brion's superb score.

The CD sound is excellent. It comes with a booklet with some notes from P.T. Anderson, the songs and the words, and some film pix. Fans of the film can relive all the very human moments again and again, and if you weren't a fan of Aimee Mann before you will be now. Fans of Mann, will enjoy this album that is definitive of her muisc, her style and intuitiveness for saying what we may be feeling.

If you are looking for just the score(also marvelous on it's own), that is also available atMagnolia (Score to 1999 Film) (Score to 1999 Film). There are some excellent reviews there of the album. This soundtrack is also available here:Magnolia
so you can check both of these sites for best deals and availability.

I've written close to 1,000 reviews here and I don't think I've ever said this before..If I could go more then 5 stars I would, but it's true of this album.

I'll leave this with some words by Mann's "Save Me":

"You look like - A perfect fit -
For a girl in need - Of a tourniquet -
But can you save me -Come on and save me
if you could save me - from the ranks- Of the freaks
who suspect - they could never love anyone...."

Enjoy....Laurie

I love every song on this CD, Aimee Mann did a great job on the score. I would recomend this CD highly.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT.......2006-05-08

Aimmee Mann is an absolutely talented artist, and her contributions to Magnolia are of nothing less than what is to be expected of her. Each of her songs has its own taste, its own feel, and its own uniqueness to it. She definately doesn't try to overdo any of her songs on the popularity factor.
Don't get me wrong, the rest of the soundtrack is fantastic too. Hell, "Dreams" is now my top inspirational song of all time, yes, past the Rocky song "Eye of the Tiger."
If you're a fan of Aimee Mann, you have to have this album. If you liked the movie, you have to have this album. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars one of the GREATEST soundtracks ever in history!!.......2006-03-07

"SAVE ME", was the oscar nominated song off this soundtrack.
it lost, unfortunately, to a forgettable cartoon monkey love song by phil collins from disney.
"Magnolia" told the story of 9 lives intertwined in one night.
very depressing, raw, and devistatingly real.
3 other songs you can find also from aimee mann's, "bachelor no.2" cd. an excellent piece of masterful writing as well as lyrical depth and sharpness. you won't find a better cd than this for a film. aimee tells it like it is.....and then some!

Bachelor No. 2 is the product of a woman whose 40th birthday looms months ahead, and it illustrates how a little seasoning has paid off creatively for Aimee Mann. Always an incisive lyricist, the eloquent singer-songwriter further hones her wordplay to a razor-sharp edge. Her subjects are so adroitly sliced and diced that little blood is shed, though they're permanently cut down to size. "Calling It Quits" targets some cad who is "numbering himself among the masterminds 'cause he's hit upon the leverage of valentines." Not that Mann spares herself from a steely assessment: "I know I had it coming / From a Caesar who was only slumming" she admits in "The Fall of the World's Own Optimist." Though this 13-track collection borrows three songs from its immediate predecessor, Mann's soundtrack to Magnolia, its musical ingenuity and consistency (notable considering five different production teams are credited here) make the scattered redundancies irrelevant. Mann's artistic growth has been evident with each new release, and Bachelor marks her biggest leap forward to date. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 10 of the best ever.......2007-06-29

Aimee Mann will likely go down in history as one of the best songwriters of her generation. There is no question that she has a scholarly wit and a devilish sense of humor. We're all lucky that she shares her talent with the world. Bachelor No. 2 is the best example of Aimee's endless talent. Practically every line of every song is a poem, a story, a song if its own. When Aimee sings "Now that I've met you, would you object to never seeing each other again" to begin Deathly, you know she means business. "Just Like Anyone" is less than 2 minutes long, but Aimee's tender words and vocals are regretful, bitter, desperate, denying, and honest. "Red Vines" is yet another standout on an album of standouts, and quite possibly her best overall song ever. Thank you Aimee for such a wonderful catalog of music, particularly the last remains of the dodo.

5 out of 5 stars grows.......2007-06-11

this cd grows on you and is pleasant and complex at the same time. just really good music and an artist that you should own.

5 out of 5 stars Aimee's "Sgt. Pepper's" Album!.......2006-03-22

I'll try to be fair since she is my favorite artist but this is by far the best and most complete album Aimme Mann has made. A bit more mature from Whatvever and I'm With Stupid. Aimee finds her knack. And she has not dissappointed us with Lost In Space and The Forgotten Arm. These are her best albums by far. But Bachelor #2 is just awesome. It starts out strong and ends so pleasantly. Some disagree but You Do is a great and moving song. She played it in West Palm at her last show and I was blown away.
You also get a few tracks that appear on her Magnolia CD which is nice. The best songs on here are Red Vines, Deathly, you know I can't say there are best songs because it's great from beginning to end. If you have any interest in Aimee Mann or even remember 'Til Tuesday then you must get this disc. It's a must! You won't be dissapointed.

"driving sideways, if you roll down the window you'll see , you're where you don't belong "

Her lyrics will blow you away.

anyone needing to be introduced to her music?

BACHELOR NO.2 also was involved for the success
of the "MAGNOLIA" soundtrack-- about 3 or 4 songs
from the bachelor album.
favorite is "red vines" and "calling it

5 out of 5 stars Grudge against man(n)?.......2005-12-10

Stepping out a bit of my usual music comfort zone to review Aimee Mann is testamony that she is one mighty artist/performer indeed. I was introduced to Mann thru rave reviews in Rolling Stone's Album Guide (2004 ed.) as her solo career was already well into full throttle. And what a pleasant surprise this introduction to her unique musical world was. Summing up Aimee Mann is not an uncomplicated task. Like a child, she initially comes across as a bit cloying, later only to cut you to shreds through her acrobatically biting and literary verse and chorus.

The music on Bachelor No. 2 runs the spectrum from quiet yet scathing commentary (Nothing is Good Enough) to the defiantely rocking (Deathly). Almost everything on Bachelor No. 2 is a resounding success, thanks to the combo of Mann's smart and unusual wordplay, assured melodies, and solid musicianship all around. Even when Mann resorts to dropping the "F" bomb in stunning opener How Am I Different?, one gets the idea that she is simply displaying a flippance over her romantic situation rather than being blatantly disgusted by it. Another in a string of highs is The Fall of the World's Own Optimist, cowritten by Mann's esteemed male predecessor Elvis Costello. Though one doubts after listening to the prevailing themes throughout No. 2 that the optimist she speaks of was ever herself. Mann more likely sees the rest of the world as unwitting optimists, and her sharp, cunning eye and sweet lips are the device to lay plain these optimists naivety. However, Mann shows the vulnerability of falling victim to these traps herself through her secret yearning of the subjects in which she sings. Kudos!

For more rocking and possibly even more emotional renditions of several of these songs and others from her now 12-year solo career, pick up a copy of Live at St. Anne's Warehouse.

Marked by a distinctly more middle-aged melancholy than her previous releases, Aimee Mann's The Forgotten Arm is a successfully conceived story album, following a couple through the life of their relationship. There is much for old and new fans here, as Mann lifts vignettes from the love-and-hate affair of a boxer and his girlfriend like sepia-toned snapshots from a county fair. In fact, it is in just one of those sticky, hot fairground parking lots where the romance blossoms and progresses "in the back of a Cadillac, that's her asleep in the mirror in back." The syncopated, bluesy melodies and strong ensemble of musicians make for a polished effort, and Mann's gimlet eye doesn't miss much--from the seductive pain of addiction, bout-induced memory loss, and finally to the inevitable discussion about having (or not) a baby. If indigo is the mood for most of Mann's work, then The Forgotten Arm may be closer to lavender, given the seasoned humor and perspective evident in standout tracks such as "That's How I Knew This Story Would Break My Heart" and "She Really Wants You." This one's a keeper. --Megan Halverson

Album Description

The Forgotten Arm is the new studio album from the Grammy and Oscar nominated singer/songwriter Aimee Mann. Aimee's songs have a literary quality to them — sharp, spare short stories set to music — so it was probably inevitable that she would one day make a concept album, the musical equivalent of a novella. The Forgotten Arm , her fifth solo release, is exactly that: a dozen songs that tell, rather loosely, the story of John and Caroline as they meet, fall in love and road trip across America.

3 out of 5 stars Someone stop Joe Henry before he "produces" again!.......2007-02-08

I'm serious, get this guy out from behind the mixing console!!

Aimee says (on her web site) that Joe Henry only spent a few days recording this album, and that he went for minimalist arrangements. Boy, does it show! For the record, I own and enjoy most of Joe's CDs and all of Aimee's CDs (including Till Tuesday but not including the Magnolia soundtrack). But the production here is just strange, with lots of instruments in mono panned hard right or left, and every track has the trailing sound of some instrument dragging on for too long before the fadeout - gaaa!!

Joe H. also ruined the latest CD from Susan Tedeschi - she doesn't even play guitar on it for cripe's sake! I mean think of it: a CD by a blues guitarist upon which said guitarist doesn't play? What were they thinking?

Another gripe: seems like singers who do more studio work than live performing are prone to end up mumbling their words quietly into the mic. I'm sad to say that Aimee is now solidly in this camp, which is a shame. I prefer dynamic singers, the energy they lend to the song is part of what I really enjoy.

Lastly, I like sad depressing songs, but "I was thinking I could clean up for Christmas" isn't the good kind of sad - it's a huge soul-sucking downer that I could have done without.

OK, I give this 3 stars because it is better than most stuff out there, but not up to Aimee's usual excellent level.

5 out of 5 stars Aimee Mann is the Stuff!!.......2007-01-30

What can I say? Aimee Mann is brilliant and her music is, too! A big fan since Til Tuesday and she keeps getting better!

5 out of 5 stars Every bit as good as Magnolia... maybe better.......2006-11-03

I love this CD. I've been a fan of Aimee Mann since her Magnolia CD. Then I heard something from The Forgotten Arm on NPR and had to check it out. I was not disappointed. It was every bit as good... maybe better (maybe because this CD doesn't have Super Tramp!?!?).

5 out of 5 stars BUY IT and give it more than one listen..........2006-10-13

I thought Lost In Space was just brilliant. I got Forgotten Arm very soon after it was released and didn't like it at all at first.

Many months later I started to spin it again and looked at the drawings along with the story....I mean SONGS.

This isn't just a music album, this is an amazing expression from a truly amazing artist, Aimee Mann. Every song is a chapter to a larger story about a couple and sometimes a song is from the girls perspective and sometimes it's his. Sometimes it's both in the same song.

It's not a happy smiley story but it feels so REAL. This is about living life and trying to overcome the difficulties. The music is great, I love the older style recording, the piano is right on, lots of acoustic guitar on this one. Aimee's voice is as good as ever, raw and unable to mask her artist expression.

If she releases an album half this good in the future I will be a happy man. Thank you Aimee for defying the industry and writing what you want and creating a true classic. Please come play Nashville.

What we're getting here is what we've come to expect from this talented songstress: pop arrangements of literate songs that deal with knotty relationships involving lovers, critics, and corporations. Mann co-wrote a song with Elvis Costello for the final 'Til Tuesday album, and it was an apt pairing. Like Costello at his best, Aimee is equal parts adroit and direct. A couplet like "I came back twice, now I'm the Anti-Christ" or "A thousand compromises don't add up to a single win" may be accompanied by something a little more to the point--"Don't you know you're a fucking freak in this world?" Mann and producer/multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion keep the songs pithy and punchy, bringing on guests like Juliana Hatfield (on the particularly intoxicating "You Could Make a Killing"), Suede alumni Bernard Butler, Michael Penn, Chris Difford, and Glenn Tilbrook for occasional adornment, but mostly maintain a hands-on approach. The result frequently recalls Abby Road-period Beatles, which isn't a bad source. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars best aimee album.......2007-01-10

I consider this the best album of Aimee, each song is a story by itself, it is a masterwork; Long shot, Ray, That's just what you are and Amateur are my favorite..... I love this album...!!!

5 out of 5 stars Worth buying........2007-01-04

With her strong emphasis on voice and unique lyrics, Aimee Mann's songs of depression and dysfunction are enough to brighten anyone's day. More upbeat and active than Mann's usual work-but with downers like Ray and Par for the Course mixed in-this album shows just how varied one singer can be. The long conclusions of a few songs can be a bit distracting, but it doesn't take away from her strong voice. An overall treat for any Aimee fan.

5 out of 5 stars Irresistible.......2006-11-25

I was lucky enough to have worked on this record and it remains one of my favorites to date. The earnestness with which Aimee approaches her songwriting coupled with the nuanced and colorful touches by Jon Brion combined to give us a fantastic record full of tender sarcasm and pithy cynicism....it expresses a part of Aimee's quirky and intelligent self beautifully. I love this record and if you like music that makes you feel and think then yhou might too...'Amateur' is one of the most elegant and touching pop balladds ever.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite album of all time.......2006-06-13

4. Could Make A Killing - 10/10 - this is the song that made me go out and buy the album in the first place
5. Superball - 11/10 - All I can say is 'WOW'
6. Amateur- 10/10 - I cried so many times over this song
7. All Over Now -10/10- Yet another one dedicated to my ex and I liked the superball reference at the end
8. Par For The Course - 8/10 - An okay favourite song

another mann masterpiece also delayed from the idiots that be behind the record labels.
they didn't hear that "hit single for the radio", and shelved
this cd. however, it saw the light of day 2 yes. later.
the whole album is mann's horrible experience with producing
and making a record with dumbasses behind the hit factory.
excellent songs, great songwriting style. the song
"amateur" is in the gwyneth paltrow film,"sliding doors"

Mann has retired the 'Til Tuesday moniker, but the elements that made Everything's Different Now (1988) so superb--heartrending songs, baroque pop arrangements and lovely melodies--remains intact. Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars A timeless work of "audio art".......2007-02-20

During the extended avalanche of grunge and rap in the 90's, this CD offered a refuge for those who craved great pop music with melody, harmony, and lyrics with substance. Aimee Mann's "Whatever" is a truly remarkable CD featuring 13 tracks of sonic GOLD!

In my opinion, Amiee Mann spent the 80's climbing to this very high point. Her work with "'til tuesday" managed to improve with each release. The 80's were an outstanding decade for pop and rock, but the "new wave" formula often used (and exploited by early 'til tuesday) had to be tossed aside for Aimee to truly shine. The 90's may have been a huge train wreck for the music industry, but Aimee Mann was shining brighter than ever!

One cannot review this CD without mentioning the production by Jon Brion (Aimee's 'til tuesday band mate). Nothing short of amazing!

I purchased this CD on the very day it was released back in the early 90's. It has since become a timeless work of "audio art", one of the few truly GREAT albums of the era.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-01-10

a strong and great album, good melodies, good production; a well written and well sung album.
aimee is a wonderful artist.

5 out of 5 stars excellent solo debut for aimee..........2006-03-05

aimee wrote this album right after disbanding 'til tuesday.
her songs on this cd were supposed to be for a 4th 'til
tuesday album, but the way things went, mann decided to
go solo, and the result is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars One of Aimee Mann's best!.......2005-08-15

Like all Aimee Mann albums, every single song that this one has is a good listen!

3 out of 5 stars Fine debut........2005-05-05

Aimee Mann's debut album, "Whatever", is a quirky collection of off-kilter guitar driven pop-- many of the trademarks in Mann's music are already in place, the sarcastic lyrics, male harmony vocals, and fantastic songwriting are there, but the music is a bit different than we'd see-- there's some pieces that point to the future, but largely, this is an album of jangly indie pop music.

The music excels at its best when Mann manages to coax her saracastic lyric and deadpan vocal into a sort of aggressive, ecstatic delivery ("I Should've Been Known", "Put Me On Top"), or when it clearly points to the feax-folky direction that would be coming in years to come (the brilliantly melancholy "4th of July", "Stupid Thing"). There's a couple misfires on this one as a result (sacchriney pop song "Could've Been Anyone", the conceptually brilliant but lifelessly executed "Jacob Marley's Chain"), although this is all going to be pretty subjective, the music is pleasant enough, some of it just lacks bite.

Its a beginning, and better things are to come-- if you're interested in Mann, don't start here, check one of the more recent albums, but if you've got those, this makes for an interesting listen.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Gigli.......2007-03-09

After Caruso's death, Beniamino Gigli became one of the most renowned tenors in the world. His rich voice well justified his reputation. While some of his mannerisms (the little "cries" and "catches" in his voice) can be a bit overdone, they were not atypical of the time. A few reactions to specific cuts.

"Celeste Aida" from Verdi's opera is smoothly sung; his rich voice serves to good effect. As already noted, the little "cries" are unfortunate, but hardly an issue. His higher notes flow smoothly from lower ones, in a seamless fashion. It would have been nice to hear him try for the piano at the end, but he did not choose to do so. Any way you slice it, a nice version of a glorious aria.

"La donna e mobile" is taken at a rather slow pace. It is smoothly sung but does not really catch the spirit of the wretched Duke. He shows wonderful breath control. This is more a workmanlike than scintillating version. On the other hand, "Che gelida manina" is wonderful. Smooth, elegant singing. A very well done high note. An iconic version.

The twin arias from "Tosca," "Recondita armonia" and "E lucevan le stelle" are very well executed. His rendering of the final "la vita" in the latter aria is, again, noteworthy.

And now for something completely different. . . . "Funiculi funicula" is spritely sung, in good spirits, and it is a lot of fun! Most enjoyable. "O Sole mio," likewise, is well rendered. As previously noted, some "off putting" cries, but the warm, full voice more than makes up for such mannerisms. He does not overpower this song with operatic technique. The end result is most satisfying.

"La danza" befuddled the great Caruso (in his version, his breathing fell apart at one point). But not Gigli. Well sung, good breath control. Bravo Gigli!

Back to opera. . . . "Nessun dorma" is well sung. The vocalization is smooth. Gigli's voice soars over orchestra and other voices. The final "Vincero" rings out.

While this CD is not without some questions, as noted above, it is worth 5 stars for its full portrayal of the work of Gigli. As such, it can be recommended for anyone who wants a comprehensive introduction to this singer.

5 out of 5 stars Gigli Is A Wonderful Singer!.......2006-07-31

It's an honor for me to be "the first" to review this recording for Amazon. As "opera lovers" know, Gigli was "the greatest tenor in the world" for many years after the death of Caruso. If you haven't heard Gigli, a great treat is in store for you! He had "penache" and drama in the way he sang. Plus he had a beautiful tonal quality! I could go on and on but if you "pass this guy up" you'll be missing some beautiful and dramatic singing from a "world class" singing actor.

Besides listening to Gigli on Cd, you'd be doing yourself a favor to buy a movie in which Gigli appears and sings. The movie is called "Non Ti Scordar di Me". I'll try to find it on amazon or from "The Bel Canto Society" and give it a "review" also. It's an "old movie" but it has a VERY touching story, is well acted, and you get to see and hear Gigli which is a great treat since he has been gone for at least 50 years. He "comes alive" in this CD and in the movie. You will "thrill" to the sound of his voice. Enjoy! Email:boland7214@aol.

One More Drifter in the Snow offers a bittersweet--but not downbeat--look at a holiday that represents the height of happiness for some, the depths of sadness for others. Following in the classy footsteps of Miss Peggy Lee, Aimee Mann takes an intimate approach to an increasingly hectic time of year. In other words, the set is a throwback to a slower-paced era. (In cinematic terms, that means more Meet Me in St. Louis, less Jingle All the Way.) There are two fitting originals, "Calling on Mary" (Mann) and "Christmastime" (Jon Brion and Michael Penn). The rest are seasonal favorites, with the exception of Jimmy Webb's "Whatever Happened to Christmas," which may be new to some. On all tracks, the focus is on the tasteful strings--credit Patrick Warren for the chamberlin, celeste, and pump organ--and Mann's delicate delivery. Overall, the artist is more interested in providing comfort than radical reinvention, although a dreamier-than-usual "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" enjoys a slight edge over the other selections. Grant Lee Phillips, taking over from Boris Karloff, provides the theatrical narration on "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Album Description

Grammy winner and Oscar nominee Aimee's first Christmas album is a collection of holiday classics and two original, beautiful, and bittersweet songs written by Mann and Michael Penn. Reminiscent of classic albums of the 40's and 50's, but without any retro kitsch. Like Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, and Peggy Lee, Aimee Mann captures the emotional beauty of Christmas.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars good addition to Christmas music.......2007-01-16

This is an excellent, not so typical, Christmas CD that I think anyone can enjoy. I especially enjoyed the Mr. Grinch cover.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-01-11

This is a must for your music collection. Aimee Mann never sounded better.

3 out of 5 stars If you love Aimee Mann.......2007-01-09

This is a must for any Aimee Mann fan! It didn't blow my socks off as far as a Christmas cd goes, but Aimee's versions were nice. I especially liked her "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch", and the original song "Calling on Mary". I just found out her producer and writing partner is her husband, and she is smiling in the pictures inside the cd, so maybe her melancholy is ebbing just a bit!

5 out of 5 stars Mellow Christmas tunes.......2007-01-04

As a hugh fan of the soulful Aimee Mann I had to purchase this Christmas collection and the lady again delivers in spades. Smooth, mellow, and fresh (Calling on Mary), Aimee's CD is just the ticket for a relaxing evening around the glowing Christmas tree with a spiked egg nog in hand.

This is sure to become a classic Christmas must-have just as Vanessa Williams' Star Bright has. And check out the new Hall and Oates Home for Christmas CD as well. Together, these three CD's make for a great evening of Christmas song listening.

2 out of 5 stars One great song and . . ........2006-12-22

Sorry to be negative, I really like Aimee Mann's music. "Calling on Mary" show's her creativity, talent, and brillance. Unfortunately, the other nine songs are safe interpretations of Christmas classics. I was hoping for something more daring and fresh.

5 out of 5 stars A great album augmented with great extras........2005-05-06

Aimee Mann's "Lost in Space" had the unfortunate problem of being released after the fantastic "Bachelor No. 2" and "I'm With Stupid", and suffers in comparison. Its not that its not a superb album, on the contrary, there's quite a bit of great material here, its just that it had a lot to live up to.

What's most immediately noticable is a feeling of relaxation and confidence in these pieces, be it the magnificent throbbing "Humpty Dumpty" (with completely magical vocal harmonies), the subtlety of the playing on "This is How It Goes", the incredible guitars, strings and vocals of "Pavlov's Bell" or the unnervingly brilliant countryish "The Moth", it sounds as though Mann has finally found the sound she wants.

There is some experimentation that goes awry on this one ("High on Sunday 51" is Aimee does blues and doesn't quite work, and "Real Bad News"'s pacing makes it lethargic), and there's enough unmemorable material to impact opinion of the album, but again, this may be a side effect of coming after two great albums, and there's certainly enough good material here to make it worth the investment.

On this edition, there's an additional CD of live material, b-sides and unreleased tracks. The live take of "Real Bad News" alone makes the extra disc worth having, delicately performed with what sounds like a ukelele anchoring it and while "The Moth" doesn't quite translate live as well as the studio take, the remainder of the live tracks are consistently high quality. The b-sides ("Nightmare Girl" and "Backfire") are both pretty much throwaway "Fighting the Stall" and "Observatory" are significantly better-- the former has some great vocal arrangements, the latter is just a superb pop song. The album closes with a live on the BBC version of "It's Not" that, while superior to the studio version, still does little for me.

This package is a great value-- I gave the album four stars, but this set gets five. Highly recommended, even if you have the album.

5 out of 5 stars Special Edition: Perfect pairing of Aimee and Seth.......2005-03-03

I've just (re)-discovered Aimee Mann, after finally managing to procure the Magnolia soundtrack and cluing in to the fact that she was the lead singer from Til Tuesday, a favorite band of mine while I was in high school. When I bought Magnolia, I also bought the LIS special edition, and I'm extrememly glad I did.

Often I find that musicians kind of run out of steam after a while and end up repeating themselves, producing watered-down versions of the hits that made them famous, but Mann just seems to get better. Pavlov's Bell and the Moth are personal favorites of mine, but truthfully, every track is extremely strong. It was also great to hear the unreleased tracks on the second CD.

I actually had to sit and listen to this album a couple of times for me to really get a grasp on how great it was. That's kind of how Lost In Space is, it takes time to sink in completely.

But what I also loved about this special edition release was the inclusion of more of Seth's art, in the form of a mini-comic and illustrations for each song. I used to enjoy reading his comic Palookaville and I have to say that the style and content of his work jibes perfectly with Aimee's sound. He's done stuff for her website too, which looks great. I'm normally not much of a packaging whore, but I really enjoyed the way this special edition was put together.

If you haven't gotten Lost In Space yet, fork over the extra few bucks and get the special edition release, it's worth it.

I can't wait until her new album, The Forgotten Arm, comes out in May!

5 out of 5 stars Unique.......2004-11-16

This artist cannot be put in any one catagory, but rather she stands alone and shines like a burning sun.
An amazing album! Everyone needs to hear it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Bonus disc is fantastic.......2004-11-10

This is worth it even if you own 'Lost in Space' because we get so many new songs. There are some great live versions of songs and a FANTASTIC version of Coldplay's 'The Scientist'. This feels like a continuation of 'Lost in Space' for Aimee is still drawing on the metaphors of space and how it feels to be lost in this world; 'Observatory' in particular. 'Nightmare Girl' is one of the best songs Aimee Mann has ever written. I've noticed that a lot of her songs deal with the need to 'save others' or be there for them. This really is an amzing 'special edition' CD and it's worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Glorious but unnecessary repackage.......2004-05-14

Fans already know that Aimee Mann is a rare bird as a songwriter and that Lost In Space is a terrific record running a bare step behind her superb Bachelor #2. Therefore, I'll limit my comments to the repackage itself. If you don't already own the album, this is the way to get it, but if you bought the earlier limited release, you have the right to be a mite annoyed. The book-style package of this "new" Lost In Space is attractively sturdy but simpy upgrades the original comic/lyric booklet into a heavy cardboard format and includes no new pictures or information. The second disc is a fine live set with 2 new studio tracks plus the 2 rare cuts that filled out the bonus single from the first version. Therefore, the new disc released by itself would have made a perfect website offering for fans who didn't want to buy the whole thing again.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superlative collection.......2006-10-11

A collection of 100 individual arias and ensembles from the EMI catalogue of complete works recorded between 1955 and 2003. It includes selections from operas by Italian, Austrian, German, Russian and French composers. The French composers are especially well represented unlike most such anthologies. And there are several more obscure contributions, such as an aria from Catalani's La Wally. A well-judged balance of musical periods and styles, and the very best singers of the last half of the last century. And remarkably, the whole collection of 6 CDS, over 7 hours of music, is being sold for the cost of only 1 CD !

5 out of 5 stars Great value for the money.......2006-04-23

This is simply the best collection of opera arias that I have seen. It's not 100% in that there are a few well-known arias that are not here, but what is here is simply a treasure. The organization is a bit strange, but there's some logic. For example, Disk 6 is mostly from French operas. A seemingly endless amount of glorious music. Just fabulous. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the money and a good starter on opera...........2006-01-07

This cd is a splendid collection of songs, and the price is unbeatable; I have but a few minor complaints about the overall product. The cd would have been much more enjoyable if they had put the music in some sort of order, rather than jumping around from artist to artist sporatically. My only other complaint would be that they could have chosen some better vocalists to play some of the songs. For example, in CD 6, track 3: Romeo et Juliette, the singer was not nearly as strong and definative as she should have been and I've definately heard in various other versions that were way better than this. This disappointed me greatly. But even with these few small complaints, this collection is still great and the price is amazing. It includes MOST of the famous opera pieces, as well some great songs that are often overlooked such as the beautiful song from Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (CD 6, track 16) along with others.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Value.......2005-08-23

I am so impressed by this collection that I must share my joy at getting so many beautiful arias, duets, et al in one collection. It captures many of the great operatic voices in stellar performances spanning the last 50 years. If you are enchanted by beautiful operatic highlights, removed from their operatic storylines, this set is for you. Hours of gorgeous music for practically pennies!
