Superior to the original release.......2007-06-17
This album is "expanded" insofar as it includes "The Bank Robbery" (a rather funky track composed for a mediocre outtake), "Snake Shake" (a byproduct of the score that's worth dancing to in one's pajamas) and extracted dialogue from the film that consists of some of the script's more memorable quotes. What's important is that this disc includes the complete musical score as it's featured in the film, especially considering that the original LP and its' 1989 CD reissue were abridgments of the score that excluded a few significant tracks. This wasn't uncommon for any score of a low-budget film that was released on LP (due to the limitations of the format and the score's lack of widespread commercial appeal), but film scores are one of many genres of music for which LPs just didn't suffice.
If you're familiar with John Carpenter's early, spare analog synth scores, you have a basic idea of what this score is like. The music for "Escape From New York" is undoubtedly one of his best scores for one of his best films; it's an infectious blend of simple, ingenious melodies and rhythms that can induce even the heaviest, most reluctant toes to tap along! While some of the themes are almost overused in their repetition, the score is never boring. It's a cold, exciting and sometimes creepy supplement to a film that's as violent and desperate as this music implies.
One of the score's highlights is a condensed, synth-rendered version of the "Engulfed Cathedral" from Debussy's first book of Préludes. In the film, this track accompanies a sequence wherein Snake Plissken (Kurt Russel) navigates a glider through the penal colony of 1997 New York, ultimately landing atop one of two decaying World Trade Towers. Both the production of this track and the composition itself perfectly complement the theme and character of this scene.
Carpenter's influence as both a film director and a composer of his own film scores has been fairly widespread. One of the most notable instances of this is Robert Rodriguez's recent score for his "Planet Terror" contribution to "Grindhouse," which implements quite a bit of analog kitsch in the vein of Carpenter's scores. In fact, a scene in the film utilizes an extract from this disc's "Back To The Pod Version No. 2 / The Crazies Come Out." What an homage!
EFNY.......2006-01-11
VERY cool soundtrack from a very cool flick. John carpenter did this music (like He does for all His movies) and it's just as cool as His other soundtracks. A word of warning though, it's got actual cues (movie dialogue) before and after most of the music, some people seem to get upset by that.
"re-issue has more impact and driving force ~ Escape from New York".......2005-10-26
Silva Screen Records brings forth their latest release in cult-sci-fi score for you the listener and fan of John Carpenter's - "Escape From New York" [New Expanded Edtion], original film soundtrack music composed and performed by John Carpenter in association with Alan Howarth...Carpenter has composed most of the music for his films and this one is no exception. The majority of the score is electronic, which serves very well for the film content.
The film was brilliant starring Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence, Isaac Hayes, Season Hubley, Harry Dean Stanton as "Brain" and Adrienne Barbeau as "Maggie"...the score follows the lead with originality and vision. Those of you who enjoyed the film, will certainly want to have this in your vast collection of film music.

Customer Reviews:
These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21
I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.
An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25
This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.
The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18
While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!
"many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

TOP CARPENTER SCORE.......2004-01-21
This new release features some new tracks, previously unreleased on CD with additional dialogue samples from the film, great collection! RECOMMENDED FOR OWNERS OF THE ORIGINAL VERSION!
The tracks sound different to the original release and I wouldn't trade them against each other, but own both of them!
This release is dedicated to the memory of Lee Van Cleef.
the missing tracks have escaped to this special edition cd.......2003-12-31
Truth be told, ESCAPE FROM NY was one of the breakthough flicks of not only the '80s but sci-fi cinema.
for various reasons; it turned an disney actor into a mainstream action star, the sets and fx was impressive considering the fact that this movie was made for less than 8 million, and more impressive was the soundtrack by carpenter and howarth.
now with this edition courtesy of silva records we get to listen to all the tracks including the deleted bank robbery scene which is my favorite next to "above the wall" and the main title.
there's even the melodic "across the roof" and the awesome police action theme (when the choppers landed near the airforce one in search of the president only to find the vicious ROMERO.
I am in awe of this soundtrack, not only is it cool to listen to on a long train ride to work, but it also is perfect for storing in the x-box console for soundtrack options.
silva has done this CD justice just as MGM has given ESFNY the special edition treatment. a must for carpenter fans.
The name's Plissken.......2003-10-15
This expanded soundtrack is a real treat for fans of the 1981 cult film from writer/director/composer John Carpenter. In many ways, this is his first full-on score. Before Escape, much of Carpenter's soundtrack work was theme-heavy and repetitive, rearranging the themes at different lengths and tempos (Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, etc.) Escape is a fuller, richer score with a memorable theme but a wider scope of sounds. The music reflects the bleak, cynical tone of the film. The piercing snyths capture the menace of the Manhattan island prison, and the action scenes are given power by sequencers and drum machines that have actually dated pretty well, considering.
Long-time Carpenter collaborator Alan Howarth went back and put together the actual cues from the film; he also put the music in sequence and included snippets of dialogue (always fun on a soundtrack disc). The result is a disc that you can listen to beginning to end, repeatedly. There is a lot less repetition than even the expanded Halloween and The Fog discs.
Considerably longer than the original CD release, there's a chunk of previously unreleased material (very typical of old Varese releases to reappear with more music). Many of the sounds predate electronic music that appeared on the popular front years later. Some of the tracks sound like they've been sampled (or at least considered) by Photek, for instance. Some of the tracks are dancey and fun. The Bank Robbery music (from a deleted scene that set up Snake's capture) is a highlight.
However, if you have the original Varese Sarabande release, I would hold on to both versions, as there are differences. First off, this disc sounds newer, clearer, shinier, as if some of the instrumentation has been remixed or different takes were used. A previous reviewer noted many of the differences in detail. They don't take away from the disc, but Carpenter addicts may want to hunt down the original release to hear the differences.
Highly recommended for Carpenter fans and fans of the film.
The Best Carpenter Score Ever!.......2002-05-13
Escape From New York is one of my all-time favorite films, and I remember seeing it when I was nine and having the opening theme running through my head for days. The rest of the score is exactly the same: Great mucical passages that fit the film perfectly.
The remastered score sounds great, and includes a lot of music which had never been made available before, including a track from a scene which was cut from the final version of the film, and "Snake Shake", the movie's unused end-credit music. There are also some dialogue tracks, which include some of the film's most memorable lines. (Too bad they didn't include my favorite- When The Duke's crony busts into the arena yelling "Listen up! The President's GONE......BRAIN TOOK HIM!!!" Oh well...) You also get that classic show-tune "Everyone's coming to New York". A great score all around.
MY FAVORITE SOUNDTRACK!!!.......2001-10-16
In the world of soundtracks, there's lots of good, but IMHO this is THE best ever done. State of the art electronics create a brooding malevolence all through the work that's hard to shake. The sequencing was hugely influential (compare Brad Fidel's 'Terminator' chase sequences). Also included is a great version of Debussy's 'Engulfed Cathedral,' and one goofy 'show tune.' Even if you've never seen the film (shame!) you should not miss out on this piece of music. And it hadn't dated one bit! I haven't heard the remaster, so Caveat Emptor on that one.

NOT CARPENTER'S ORIGINAL SCORE...IT'S A HACK JOB..........2005-12-04
What a piece of ****. Do not buy this worthless CD. If you are a fan of John Carpenter's scores, you will not like this. Don't waste your money like I did...And the only reason it got one star is because you can't give it any less!
not for fans of carpenter's scores.......2004-12-03
like other reviewers said, this is someone else playing those classic carpenter tunes. sometimes it sounds like elevator music. unfortunately, the cover doesn't say anything about this piece of work...
Essential what?.......2003-07-08
As the previous reviewer noted, nowhere on this CD does it indicate that the 'Essential John Carpenter' is someone re-recording all of the famous cues. Naturally all the info is on the inside.
And the disc? I don't see the point in bothering. They might as well make Assault on Precinct 13, Dark Star, and They Live (which pretty much don't have scores in print anymore) available again, even if they have to combine a couple to make one disc.
Carpenter does not use orchestras or elaborate bands for his scores. He does most of it himself and that makes another Carpenter collection simple. It's not difficult to play the notes, but everything is just slightly off and after a while you wonder what's the point.
This is NOT the music from the Carpenter films you love. This is someone playing that music. Assault on Precinct 13, which provides most of the attraction of this pretty worthless disc, sounds lousy and has none of the life of the throbbing synth of the original. Not only that, but they have the nerve to throw in two (2) cues from Starman, a Carpenter film that he didn't do his own music for(!) Instead the disc is broken by the Jerry Goldsmith pieces that sound NOTHING like anything Carpenter has done. It's bad--it belongs elsewhere, namely the Starman soundtrack which is still in print.
Stay away from this thing. It's a ripoff, another attempt to cash in on a name without providing any real product.
AVOID THIS IMITATION GARBAGE!!!!! FAKE CARPENTER.......2003-06-25
These jerks did a great job hiding the fact that these tracks are re-recorded by some schlep. Avoid this lame piece of garbage at all costs. The tones are totally wrong, it sounds very little like the genius originals. I bought this to get some of the Assault on Precinct 13 stuff, and was horrified to find that everything had been re-recorded. THIS IS NOT MENTIONED ON THE OUTER PACKAGING IN ANY WAY!!! You would never know until you open it and read the liners. Shame on these bastards for trying to dupe and rip people off. AVOID THIS [STUFF]!!!
"absolute in capturing the original scores".......2002-12-03
Hats off to Gareth Williams, James Fitzpatrick and Silva Screen Records for this venture into the world of John Carpenter. Silva has done a masterful job of recreating the feel of the original Carpenter film scores. This awesome compilation of "great thriller music" sends chills up our spines from composers Ennio Morricone, Jack Nitzsche, Dave Davies, Alan Howarth and of course John Carpenter. Each selection is arranged and performed with plenty of suspense dating back to 1974, which gave the audience a supernatural and imaginative fright. Each score paints the mood for every cue, which writer, producer and director Carpenter required...and then some.
Each score takes on a life of its own away from the film. If you've never seen any of the films, your imagination plays a key role interpreting what our legendary director/composer has up his sleeve when writing and directing the music. Entire album is a stand out ~ this one's for Carpenter and Silva fans alike, a collection for the first time with tremendours power and immediacy of each cue can now be heard. With Dolby Digital Surround Sound Recordings...this is a must have for your collection. All "film-score-buffs" beware, this is guranteed to give your goosebumps on the very first track, gotta love it!

This score is a Carpenter classic........2002-01-09
After his famous Halloween theme, this score for his cult classic sci-fi actioner is probably Carpenter's best work. The now famous main title theme is terrific in and of itself, but The Duke Arrives and Police State/Romero and the President are just as strong. Carpenter fans, or just those who like quality synth tunes, will need no encouraging to buy this. Few composers know how to use the synthizer to its full effect, John Carpenter is at the very top of that short list. An essential for any Carpenter addict.
escape from new york one of carpenter's finest.......2001-09-16
I really love this reissue, I have the Dagored vinyl reissue released in 2000. First this is a must for musicians that collect vintage synths and drum machines, I recognize some of the sounds from early 80's synths I have. Carpenter has taken soundtrack music to a new level and the fruits are represented on this record better than any other I feel. If you can find this issue of the vinyl it comes highly recommended. I think the record sounds much better than the reissue CD. Not to mention it comes with a full color movie poster of the Italian cut of the film "1997:Fuga Da New York". I think that in the near future people like John Carpenter and the Italian band Goblin will get their due as trailblazers of electronic music and soundtracks. "You Are The Duke!" Donald Pleasence
Typical of Its Genre.......1999-07-20
If you're a fan of soundtracks driven by haunting tunes from electronic synthesizers, this one belongs in your CD collection. Very reminiscent of early Tangerine Dream soundtrack cuts (like the sexy train sequence in "Risky Business") that were typical from 1980 to 1986. Afficiados refer to this period as the "Virgin Years" and it is a by-gone era. You rarely hear this kind of music anymore -- although bits and pieces have been picked up and integrated into a newer musical form called "Trance." Composed by John Carpenter, my favorite on this CD is the Main Theme, followed by the entrance by the Duke.

This is a really fantastic soundtrack. I bought it when the movie first came out. Especially the main title theme. It's my special song like Ally McBeal has her special song. "Duke Arrives" is pure edge of the seventies funk. It all blends in with the classical tracks.
