Editorial Reviews

If twin-brother filmmakers Allen and Albert Hughes wanted to deliberately mess with their reputation as masters of the contemporary black urban milieu, they couldn't have chosen a better vehicle than a faithful adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel and its ominous exploits of notorious serial killer Jack the Ripper on the shadowy streets of Victorian London. This soundtrack album opens with the "Wormwood Remix" of Marilyn Manson's Holy Wood single "The Nobodies," an obvious bow to contemporary marketing that nevertheless sets the proper tone with its bleak ethos and jagged rhythms.
But it's the dark, brooding score of largely unsung South African composer Trevor Jones that's the real focus here. Jones's masterful use of orchestral color and pacing, punctuated by slight percussive, choral, and electronic flourishes, paints a musical landscape as bleak as it is suspenseful. The composer's use of melody is spare, deliberate, and minor key, helping to infuse the score with a very human sense of melancholy even as it tightens the screws of dramatic tension. The concluding track, "Bow Belle (Absinthium)," offers up the strangest treat: a swirling, psychedelic cocktail of twisted, 19th-century ballroom gentility and contemporary digital sorcery that seems to crackle through a gramophone player. --Jerry McCulley

Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31
The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.
Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09
I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.
Great Collection.......2001-12-25
Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!
Exceptional.......2001-11-30
I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!
A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29
To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

Customer Reviews:
Trevor Jones' solid soundtrack for "From Hell".......2004-05-28
Trevor Jones provides a solid if not spectacular soundtrack for "From Hell," which is actually a good thing. I have seen too many horror films where the chills are supposed to come from the loud and omnipresent musical score instead of the action on screen. The Hughes Brothers had the story of Jack the Ripper to work with and while they actually did not get as explicit as the historical record allowed them with regards to the Ripper's victims, there is enough that the music is required to add to the scenes and not carry them.
Obvious Jones is trying to come up with a gothic score with Victorian overtones (or visa versa; either way, both elements are equally strong). Because it is a horror film the use of strings is important, but Jones does this without falling into the "Psycho" psychotic slashing mode, which explains why the Academy of St. Martins in the Field was the orchestra of choice. They are going to give Jones the period feel that he wants for this score. There are even some Chinese touches, reflecting the opium den frequented once too often by the film's hero. Yes, opening the album with the "Wormwood Mix" of Marilyn Manson's single "The Nobodies" is a marketing ploy, but then it is the rare soundtrack that does not have some recognizable voice pop up in the closing credits and starting singing a song. But even with that track leading off the album there is still over an hour's worth of music from Trevor's score (most of the tracks are 5-8 minutes in length).
"In Memoriam" establishes the main theme of the film through a nice mixture of strings and choir that belies for the moment the horrors ahead. Only "Portrait of a Prince" and "Pennies for the Ferryman" allow moments of beauty and light comes back into the score. Most of the tracks focus, such as "Sprig of Red Grapes" and "Death Coach," on the horrors of the Ripper and his murders. Throughout Jones develops the requisite sense of unease and tension through the use of cellos and basses. The soundtrack ends with "Bow Belle (Absinthium)," written by Trevor Jones and Victoria Seale, performed by Amanda Floyd and Heather Cairncroft, and done so that it sounds like you are listening to it over a old fashioned gramaphone, which makes for an interesting bookend to the opening Manson track. "From Hell" does not qualify as a classic horror film score, but Jones still provides something worth listening to on its own.
If you want a song from the trailer, go back to school.......2003-10-10
For anyone saying that they bought this cd or went to go see this movie for the song "Reflect Trees" by Billy Corgan I have only one piece of advice. Stop wasting space and air. A score for a work of art such as this does not need to be sullied by the rantings of some inane twit looking for just one song. The trailer to a movie will have severely different music then the film itself for many different reasons. To say that one would want to go see a movie based on that one song is preposterous and overly dense.
For the music itself, it is wonderful. It portrays the mood and feeling of the movie it represents and keeps the themes straight. 4 out of 5 stars is not bad but there is a reason. The music is representative of it's source material and not entirely enjoyable unless one has seen the movie. In other words, it doesn't stand entirely on it's own two feet. But it is wonderful and definitely worth your money if you enjoyed the movie, it's mood and it's music.
TRAILER MUSIC FROM HELL.......2003-06-01
informations about the trailer music for you people. The real title is "REFLECT TREE WHISPERS" and it is from BILLY CORGAN, last song on stigmata's soundtrack. This trailer song is excellent.
A beautiful score...Perfect!.......2002-07-25
The horror/suspense genre has continually turned out some of the best film scores ever (think THE OMEN, ALIEN, INTERVIEW with the VAMPIRE, PSYCHO, JACOB'S LADDER, HELLRAISER II, etc.) yet its composers' work (Hermann, Goldenthal, Jarre, Young) goes largely overlooked and underappreciated. One of the masters of the genre (Howard Shore of David Cronenberg fame) got his due this past year (rightfully so) w/ his masterful score for LORD OF THE RINGS. However, 2001 also saw another masterful score from Trevor Jones, a man who hits a career high with his take on themes such as love, death, disease, desire, addiction, remorse, melancholy, and rememberence. To be sure, this is a "dark" score, as "high gothic" as any Requiem or cathedral in France. The score here expands past the limits of the film's narrative (that of Jack the Ripper) and soars into a larger territory, probing ultimately the dark & foggy territory of the lusciously unknown. Of course, we could do w/o the Manson song at the beginning (there to make some extra money for the studio no doubt) but the start of the score (track 2) more than makes up for this mistake, offering the listener a suite of sorts encompassing most of the themes and motifs to be elaborated on over the course of the entire score. Not only is this track worth the price of this cd but it also showcases why Trevor Jones now joins the ranks of the contemporary masters.
(Also give a listen to Han Zimmer's score for HANNIBAL if you like this one.)
Good, but I just wanted the trailer song..........2002-07-17
The song are cool, somewhere interesting. But the reason that I wanted this soundtrack, from the not too good movie FROM HELL, was the inspiring and really cool trailer song.
That song was just great, I went to see the film 'cause of that song. But i never herad it in the movie, or in this CD.
I know that this song was also used in STIGMATA's soundtrack.
It's called `Reflect trees'.But I checked it out, and it's not here to listen.
A real shame, the only great thing was not here.
A specially liked the WhiteChapel murders and Marilyn Manson's n songs.
Those were my favourites. The others are still good, suspense and chilling music, for a horror film.

Incredibly Bad Album and a Real Misnomer .......2006-10-16
What happened here? I was expecting some really moving themes from war movies. This CD is a dud. Some of the selections don't seem to qualify. THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER and A FEW GOOD MEN should not be on here because they are not War movies. They are military movies, but not War movies. The recordings per say are rather flat and uninspiring. Perhaps the themes from THE GUNS OF NAVARONE or WHERE EAGLES DARE could have helped.
Very Bad Selections.......2006-10-16
"War is Hell: Battle Music from the Movies" is far below average. The selections are poor. For a major orchestra the performances are very weak. And what is A FEW GOOD MEN doing on a CD of motion picture WAR music? I thought A FEW GOOD MEN took place during peace time.
Surprisingly Poor CD from Bill Broughton.......2006-10-16
This is a very poor entry from Bill Broughton's "Magic of the Movies" series. The "Wild, Wild Westerns" album was outstanding. This album is a huge disappointment for two reasons. Primarily the selections themselves are just mundane and seem to be all over the lot. For instance APOCALYPSE NOW contained a very good original score. Instead Bill Broughton gives us "The Ride of the Valkyries" a classical piece and he does so again with "Adagio for Strings" used in Platoon. Secondly the orchestrations and performances are substandard. "Hymn to Red October" is very poor and does an injustice to that great composition. The GETTYSBERG Main Theme is equally inferior. Bill Broughton should have left the finale to A FEW GOOD MEN off this album altogether. "Song of the High Seas" and "Guadalcanal March" from VICTORY AT SEA are acceptable but are still marginal at best. The only standout on this CD is Elmer Bernstein's THE GREAT ESCAPE. The march is played exceptionally well and true to the film.
Curious War Music.......2005-10-19
This is a curious collection of music from war films. It is somewhat a disappointment. The selections contain several offerings of music that were not composed directly for film such as PLATOON: ADAGIO FOR STRINGS and RIDE OF THE VALKYRIES used in APOCALYPSE NOW. I thought the VICTORY AT SEA selections were the best. Bill Broughton does an adequate job here.
Very Nice Album .......2005-06-29
Very nice arrangement, definitely one for your collection if you like movie music.

The first half of Film Works VIII is devoted to the soundtrack for The Port of Last Resort, a documentary about Jewish refugees escaping Germany in the '30s and emigrating to Shanghai. Much of the music in this section reflects the work on Zorn's Masada discs, except that pipa virtuoso Min Xiao-Fen injects a Chinese undercurrent into the klezmer-tinged jazz. The second half reverberates with an introspective, noncarnivalesque, all-percussion score for the movie Latin Boys Go to Hell. While this might seem like an odd cinematic combination, the cross-pollination on Film Works VIII ultimately produces a successful hybrid collection of world and film music. --Michael Woodring
Customer Reviews:
Asia meets Masada and sensual percussion........2005-09-08
"Filmworks VIII" is the soundtrack for two films-- "Port of Last Resort", a documentary about Jews fleeing Nazi Germany for Shanghai and "Latin Boys Go To Hell", which I confess I have no idea what it is.
For "Port of Last Resort", Zorn hit on the brilliant idea of exploring his Masada songbook with the inclusion of the pipa-- a traditional Asian stringed instrument ably performed by Min Xiao-Fen set against the chamber ensemble setting he'd worked with previously-- in opposition to the pipa is the Masada String Trio (Mark Feldman- violin, Erik Friedlander- cello, and Greg Cohen- bass), guitarist Marc Ribot, and pianist Anthony Coleman in various formations. The music itself borders on absolutely breathtaking at times, although I found the pieces performed exclusively by the trio were a bit lacking in something ("Emunim"), the lovely "Shanghai" (with the Masada String Trio offsetting the pipa) and the pained guitar version of "Ruan" (where its really Feldman who shines) are certainly intriguing.
Zorn sounds a bit bitter in his liner notes concerning "Latin Boys Go To Hell"-- evidentally, the music was largely rejected in favor of rock and disco pieces, which prompted Zorn to ask for his name in the credits to be altered. The music itself ranges from delicate vibes ("Locura") to driving kit drum workouts ("Sangre") and tribal beats ("Mentiras"). All in all, its a fairly interesting and engaging listen.
Together, "Filmworks VIII" is a decent piece-- Zorn has much better soundtrack work, but this is a respectable entry into his catalog.
One of, if not the, best Filmworks CD's out there..........2003-10-08
Marc Ribot's playing on this album is some of his best playing layed down on the Compact Disc medium. Highly recommended... The 2nd half of the CD featuring Wollesen is great too! Mostly percussion yet interesting and articulate. This is a great album that gets better with each listen!
Lovely..........2000-10-29
THE PORT OF LAST RESORT material on this disc is really quite moving; in addition to players from the Masada String Quartet / Bar Kochba project, a Chinese musician playing the traditional pipa is added. The film, I gather, was about Jewish refugees in Shanghai, and the music blends together Jewish and Asian traditions. It's among the most listenable and beautiful material Zorn has released; while I enjoy his quirky and perverse aspects as much as the next Zorn fan, it's nice to have music by him around that is this mature and reflective. The percussive stuff is less interesting, though there are a couple of nice cuts. One of my favorite filmworks discs (along with 1 and 5). Worthwhile.

Zorn adds another Filmworks!.......1998-10-16
On the Filmworks discs, you can never be sure what you'll find: surf guitar, covers of Ennio Morricone, freejazz, waltzes of death, punk rock, pipe organ stuff... This one is no surprise. There are two halves to this cd. The first accompanies a Jewish documentary and is based on the feel of Masada/Bar Kokhba, with such players as Erik Friedlander on cello, Anthony Coleman on piano and Marc Ribot on guitar. The second half is the soundtrack to Latin Boys Go To Hell, about discovering sexuality. It is all percussion, with Kenny Wollesen and Cyro Baptista. This made more sense after seeing the film, and is evidently a great soundtrack. Check it out!

Album Description
This is dark instrumental surf music. Reminiscent of classic surf artists, Dick Dale & the Del-Tones and The Ventures but with a darker modern twist. Murder On Beaver Street shifts between different styles within the surf genre. For example, the fast picking style of Dick Dale, the spaghetti western feel of Ennio Morricone, and the primitive rock and roll style of Link Wray.
Customer Reviews:
Pay No Attention To The Song Titles!.......2005-09-03
Overall this is well-played instrumental surf music of a gentle nature. I have no idea where the group came up with song titles like "The Mummy's Curse," "Shallow Grave," or "Death, Death, Death." There is nothing eerie or ominous about any of it. In fact this CD could be played in the background of a quiet get-together with friends and set a very nice ambience. It is worth owning but don't buy it expecting music in the "horror surf" genre.
AWESOME!!!.......2004-06-08
This CD is great. If you are looking for a different type of music other than the same old pop music out these days, pick up this CD!!! You can feel the soul in the instruments these guys play and you WILL be caught dancing or jumping around!!! This is the best surf I have heard!!!
