Jimmy Buffett was already three well-received albums towards becoming a populist phenomenon when he undertook his only film score (to date), director Frank Perry's 1975 "modern" Western, Rancho Deluxe. The fact that the film's screenwriter, the highly regarded Thomas McGuane, is Buffett's brother-in-law certainly had something to do with his hiring. In this instance, however, the results are decidedly pro-nepotism.

Buffett's songs and incidental music for this underappreciated antecedent to the likes of Clint Eastwood's Bronco Billy (including an early version of the hit "Livingston Saturday Night") have a raw honky-tonk swagger that would've done Waylon or Willie proud. More than merely a welcome addition to the Parrothead canon, Rancho Deluxe proves to be an anti-Nashville country classic. --Jerry McCulley

From the Label
Music By Jimmy Buffett (1975) Starring Jeff Bridges, Sam Waterston, Harry Dean Stanton, Slim Pickens, and Patti D'Arbanville, RANCHO DELUXE is described by film critic Vincent Canby as "a most engaging, deliberately cool comedy about coping in the contemporary American West." With music written and performed by pop superstar Jimmy Buffett in 1975, ust as his rabid "parrothead" fanbase was developing, the soundtrack runs the gamut from twangy vocal cowboy tunes to vibey instrumental near-lounge pieces. The title track and an early version of "Livingston Saturday Night" featuring different lyrics from other recorded versions, are standouts.

3 out of 5 stars +3/4 -- Long-lost country-styled soundtrack.......2002-08-13

Having failed to find commercial success in Nashville, Buffett relocated to Florida and began forging his emblematic sound on 1973's "A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean" and a pair of albums in 1974. The following year he temporarily dropped the beachcomber persona to return to the folkier sound of his earliest works (e.g., 1970's "Down to Earth"), with an even twangier steel-and-fiddle country bent.

No matter the musical direction, though, Buffett's trademark wit and storytelling abilities are always in play. "Livingston Saturday Night" (which he'd remake, with softened lyrics, a few years later), "Countin' the Cows Ev'ry Day" and the title track are all infused with Buffett's slice-of-life observations. "Cattle' Truckin'" is a light country-swing tune and "The Wrangler" features some eight-bar piano, harmonica and guitar blues. The shorter instrumental tracks harken back to his earlier folk-country sounds, rather than the Caribbean-influenced music that was becoming his forte.

The entire CD is a brief twenty-seven minutes, and includes snippets of dialog from the film. Even at that short length, there's three audiences for this disc: fans of the film, Buffett completists, and those who prefer Buffett's earlier country-oriented material to his later style.

3-3/4 stars, if Amazon allowed fractional ratings.

4 out of 5 stars Deluxe Soundtrack.......2001-01-12

Rancho Deluxe is a forgotten movie. Released in 1975, it starred a young Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterson and was dubbed as a modern western. The film flopped, as did the soundtrack by Jimmy Buffett. It is the only movie score that Mr. Buffett has done (although he has subsequently written songs for movies like Fast Times At Ridgemont High) and the subject was perfect for his persona at the time. The soundtrack is nicely repackaged and remastered by MGM and contains snippets of dialogue along side Mr. Buffett's mix of country & folk. Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Roots.......2000-12-29

Thank God this was released on CD. I've nearly worn a hole in my old LP that I bought 20+ years ago as a "cut-out" (remember those) at a basement lp bargain shop. What great music this is!

4 out of 5 stars Buffett plays the honky-tonker.......1999-10-12

I was ecstatic to see this get rereleased on CD. I spent about five years trying to find it, and I think it was worth the wait. There is a lot of instrumental stuff here, butit happens to be some of the best music Buffett has ever made (excluding the mysterious "Some Gothic Ranch Action"...what was that about?) "Ridin' in Style" will get your toe-a-tappin, and you'll wish the song weren't so damn short. The theme songs are fantastic, and the definitive version of "Livingston Saturday Night" is here, dirty lyrics and all. The CD is a bit short, though, but it's a must for a Buffett completist and, musically, is just a fantastic album.

4 out of 5 stars Raw Buffett In All Its Glory.......1999-04-07

This is an album to complete your Buffett library. All tracks are raw and old school Buffett. If you like Before the Beach (High Cumberland Jubilee, Down to Earth) then this is a good one to have. This album, however, is not for the "Fins," "Cheeseburger" lovin' fan. If you've never been to "Dixies Diner" then you might want to avoid the "Rancho."
