While director Jeannot Szwarc's 1980 time-travel romance nearly drowned in a sea of its own bathos, the score of the Christopher Reeve/Jane Seymour vehicle has become something of a word-of-mouth classic. Chalk that status up to the great English composer John Barry, whose lushly romantic score has largely overshadowed the film it was written for. Note to Titanic fans: if you liked the score for that film, you may fall in love with (or to) this one as well. Ironically, much of the action of Somewhere in Time takes place in 1912, the year the Titanic sank. --Jerry McCulley

Good soundtrack..........2007-06-10

Lo compre para mi vieja que ya me habia estado presionando, pero en mexico no lo encontre, esta chido.
Best to see movie before buying the soundtrack.......2007-03-19
Some very nice compositions but will only probably grab you if you have seen the movie. Otherwise might seem disjointed. Probably will not have wide appeal, but, as I said, if the movie touched you, you will want the soundtrack.
Movie soundtrack CD.......2007-03-10
Beautiful music just as you would expect from John Barry. Very enjoyable to listen to.
Somewhere In Time.......2007-01-09

Customer Reviews:
Please, Mr. Barry, I Want Some More!.......2007-02-22
There is no doubt that the soundtrack of Somewhere in Time contains some of the most beautiful music on Earth - thanks in great part to Rachmaninoff. I was so excited to see this re-recording with its promise of more music. I was less excited when I listened to it, simply because I wanted - and expected - more. While some of the gaps have been filled in from the original recording, the new pieces - some a mere 1:30 in length - left me wanting still more. That said, however, I would still opt for this recording over the original simply because you do get to hear more of Mr. Barry's - and Rachmaninoff's - exquisite music.
A Big Fan.......2006-11-07
I have enjoyed the music from this movie since it came out. After not hearing the CD for years I came across it again and have been so pleased with the music. The selections are great. If you are a fan of the movie or Rachmaninoff - this is sure to please!
AN UPDATED JOURNEY TO THE PAST........2006-11-03
John Barry contributed magnificently to the atmosphere and artistic quality of SOMEWHERE IN TIME, the film based on a Richard Matheson novel about a man travelling to the past to meet again with the love of his life/lives. Haunting music, sometimes romantic others misterious, are basic to this tragic tale starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. This re-recording captures every musical moment of the original partiture on digital sound. A must for the film fans, which are legion!
Beautiful Music, Blooper In Text On Jewel Case.......2006-09-05
I bought a 20th anniversary DVD copy of this movie last weekend, and just bought this CD today. It plays the soundtrack as beautiful as it was played in the film. One litte blooper on the box list of tracks. Track 7 is called "Room 417". In the film, Richard (played by the late Christopher Reeve) stays in Room 416 at the Grand Hotel. Except for that, this is a music set for a beautiful dream. I only wonder if I fall asleep listening to it, will I wake up 1912? Time will tell I guess. ;-)
Somewhere in Time.......2006-08-04
Hauntingly beautiful music. If you loved the movie, the CD brings it all back without the picture. So, you can listen at work, or in the car, and visually transport yourself back in time.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18
Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....
The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!
The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!
The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!
This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.
One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07
What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!
Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16
Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Should be titled Great End Credits Themes.......2007-04-05
Okay, so I thought I was buying "Great Movie Love Themes." I was familiar with the list, so I thought I would be getting the perfect compilation of melodies. Wrong. This CD should be titled, "Great Movie End Credits Themes," because four of the 12 selections are End Credits music, the stuff no one wants to listen to as all the technical information rolls at the end ot a movie (you know, exit music). The trouble with End Credits is that few carry the actual love theme music or they carry only a small snippet. Most End Credits music is boring. "The English Patient," "Shakespeare in Love," "Sabrina," and "Braveheart," are all End Credits music. Don't expect to hear predominant love themes in these particular selections for which the movies are known.
On the plus side, "Unchained Melody," "Somewhere in Time," and "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini," are beautiful renditions. And the End Credits music for "Sabrina," is better than expected. I'd give "Unchained Melody," "Somewhere in Time," and "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini" five stars, "Sabrina" four stars and the other eight selections two stars.
Just be aware when you buy this album that you are not getting exactly what is described. You have to read the fine print on the back of the CD cover.
Great Mood Music! .......2006-02-27
I love any movie themes, especially the unsung tracks such as the music for opening or closing credits. This is a terrific CD and keeps me happy at work!
movie themes.......2006-02-18
This CD is one of my new favorites. The music is just beautiful. Very relaxing soundtracks for in the car or at home.
Wonderfully romantic.......2004-02-10
I really enjoy listening to CD for everything it has. The mixture of cinema movies makes it more likeable for they're films that most movie-goers will be able to relate to, in one way or another. Just say "Romeo and Juliet" and I'll think Nino Rota.
A personal favourite would have to be "The Heart Asks Pleasure First" (The Piano) but "Rose" (Titianic) follows close behind. The suite, "A Time For Us" (Romeo and Juliet) brings tears to my eyes and "Somewhere In Time" is a lovely ballad. For any other lovers of romance, whether it be in movies or in music, this is one cd that you are sure to like.
A Good Listen.......2003-01-28
Some familiar favorites from great movies. A good cd to have for entertaining because everyone recognizes the tunes.

A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09
This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".
A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06
Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).
"the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06
The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.
For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.
This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.
A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

Musical emotion.......2001-07-24
Somewhere in Time is one of my favorite movies...and not necessarily because I think the acting is all that great, either.
The setting (Mackinac Island, Michigan) is one of the most romantic and fun places on earth. And the story (by the legendary sci-fi fantasy author Richard Matheson) is clever and creative.
I think the music makes the movie unforgettable to me.
I have never heard such a marriage of music and story. This soundtrack transcends the movie and stands on its own as being some of the most heart-wrenching, emotional sounds I've ever heard.
Since there's no way to adequately describe the personal impact music makes on onself to another person (I liken it to describing the color green to somehow who's been blind from birth), I won't go into great detail in this review.
All I can tell you is that this music tugs at my heartstrings, soothes my soul and brings out my melancholy side like nothing I've ever heard. John Barry created a masterpiece with this soundtrack and I'll be forever grateful.
For romantic evenings, this soundtrack can't be beat. For getting misty-eyed over lost loves, you won't find better accompaniment. For sheer creative brilliance, this CDs takes the blue ribbon.
I highly recommend this soundtrack, especially in the gold disc, remastered version. Of course, if you've seen the movie you probably already own this disc. But, as I wrote, this CD stands on its own as beautiful music worthy to be heard. Buy it, play it and let it wash over you in waves of emotion.
Music to set your soul sailing ..........1998-11-26
Beautiful arrangement of music that will move you from the very cor eof your being. The clear and crisps sounds are haunting and truly unique. The variation on a theme by Paginin is inspiring.
You must own this cd in the Gold format.
