Patrick McGoohan's enigmatic 1967 TV miniseries about a spy who resigns his duties, only to be kidnapped and imprisoned in a seemingly idyllic seaside resort of undetermined national affiliation remains one of the medium's most compelling parables about individuality and the dangers of creeping conformity. Longtime fans of the cult show should welcome this first volume of the show's quirky, distinctive musical scores. Anchored by Ron Grainer's propulsive main and end titles, this volume features musical highlights of three Prisoner episodes ("Arrival," "Chimes of Big Ben," "A, B and C") as well as key snippets of dialogue. The cues here span library stock cues and the work of a number of British TV composers, ranging from tortuously treacly Muzak and jolly marching band music (Strauss's "Radetzky Waltz" in particular) to '60s jazz exotica, orchestral music, and spooky lullabies. As utilized by music editor Eric Mival in the show's unsettling context, it's the stuff of authoritarian-inspired nightmares--and some of the most consistently successful uses of musical irony in TV history. Also includes an unused main theme and informative illustrated booklet. --Jerry McCulley

Following the travails of a resigned secret agent held captive in a strange resort/penal colony, The Prisoner was one of '60s TV's most enigmatic masterpieces. Powered by strong metaphorical currents about the nature of man and freedom, the cult show's irony-fueled musical scores are finally available in a series of three CD's. This third volume is bookended by complete, sound effects free renditions of the Ron Grainer's bracing main title themes and covers the episodes "Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling", "The Girl Who Was Death," and the show's exceptionally bizarre denouements, "Once Upon a Time" and "Fall Out." Split roughly evenly between existing library music and emblematic original pieces by Albert Elms and other composers, the cues gathered here are some of the show's most adventurously strange, spanning a truly dizzy melange of spacey exotica, Austin Powers-inspiring jazz-pop excursions, surreal carnival music, Indian ragas, classical toccata, electro-pop, and twisted martial tunes. Also included are key dialog snippets from the four covered episodes. --Jerry McCulley

Fantastic!.......2003-09-07
This is such an amazing, fun CD. The music is very different from song to song, but it manages to retain its strange, and therefore Prisoner like, quality. Anyone who is a fan of the show will automatically enjoy songs such as "European Drive," which are more relaxed, or more upbeat songs like "Big Dipper" that were featured in the TV show. I must not forget the song "Record Store!" This song was way ahead of its time with a beat resemblant of trip-hop and blaring brass instruments accompanied by low, pounding piano. It truly rocks! The interesting quotes add a nice dynamic to the whole album. I highly recommend this CD. It covers so many genres through the amazing orchestrated pieces composed by Wilfred Josephs, a musically innovative man. I would like to stress that even people completely unfamiliar with The Prisoner will enjoy this CD and will probably want to watch the TV series because of the awesome music, which captures the essence of The Prisoner so well.
"Ron Grainer & Albert Elms scores are absolute".......2003-03-13
Silva America presents the final album in the ongoing "The Prisoner", musical score series. This third CD features episodes that will take you back to 1968 and "The Village". Opening track is "DO NOT FORSAKE ME OH MY DARLING", Number 6 is in the market for a mind transfer ~ "THE GIRL WHO WAS DEATH", females can be dangerous even to Number 6 ~ "ONCE UPON A TIME", many would like to go back to our childhood, but is it such a good idea for our hero ~ "FALL OUT", freedom awaits Number 6, but will he ever be free. Ron Grainer's pulsating theme fashions our character within "The Village", just as we remembered the bizarre cues from the show. Blending jazz mixed with pop composer Albert Elms spins some strange almost intergalactic themes within music from India. The music can actually stand on its own, taking the listener completely under the spell of Grainer and Elms compositions.

In 1967, Patrick McGoohan followed up his successful run in TV's Secret Agent (titled Action Man in the UK) with a bizarre, pioneering miniseries that seemed to pick up where the previous show left off. An angry secret agent resigns, only to be kidnapped by political entities unknown and imprisoned in an otherwise idyllic storybook resort called The Village. The show has endured as a cult favorite to this day. Its metaphorical undercurrents were supported by deeply ironic musical scores, which are finally available in a three-volume series. This second title begins with a faithful, full-length 1996 performance of Ron Grainer's main title theme by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. The volume covers the episodes "Free for All," "The General," "Many Happy Returns," and four others. Focused largely on the uneasy, emblematic jazz-exotica and strange martial music of show staff composer Albert Elms, it's a prime showcase for much of the show's unsettling musical tack (which would see recycling in future episodes). The remaining music is split between a handful of other composers and stock library tracks, chosen with an ear for the show's angular ethos by music editors Eric Mival and Robert Dearberg. Key dialog excerpts from each show are included as well. --Jerry McCulley

Number 2 has succeeded.......2005-07-22
This CD is awesome if you want the mood music, the music which plays in the background and often set the mood. Not the Village Radio music (although there's some of that, too), and the dialouge is just first-rate! Well, to me, anyway. Feel free to form your own opinion, though!
Now If Only Silva Would Release "The Persuaders!".......2005-01-29
I'm thrilled at both the sound quality and artistic quality of this release! If you liked the Prisoner show and for some bizarre reason only wanted one volume of the music, then "The Prisoner File #2" should be your pick! It has more of the thrilling suspense and escape and chase music heard on the show. It doesn't contain so much of the source music (like the "Oom-Pa-Pa" band music) featured on the other volumes. The Main Title is a re-record, which is a decent version, but the End Title included here is the best arrangement of the theme I've heard! Now if only Silva would release the scores from the 1971-72 TV series "The Persuaders!" my life would be complete!

"the score covers seven exciting episodes ~ The Prisoner".......2003-03-13
This album covers seven classic episodes of "The Prisoner", featuring some of the best story lines complimented by a intriguing score. Patrick McGoohan who as you know by now is referred to as Number 6 takes his characterinto several directions, trying to escape "The Village". We open with "FREE FOR ALL", Number 6 runs for election to become Number 2 ~ "THE GENERAL",now we have [mind-controlled] citizens as a result of speed learning ~ "MANY HAPPY RETURNS", where did everybody go? The Village is deserted and a raft must be built to escape, but does escape? ~ "DANCE OF THE DEAD", finding bodies on the beach is breaking The Village rules, a trial is in the making ~ "CHECKMATE", chess anyone? The Rook and Number 6 are ready to leave and board a rescue ship ~ "HAMMER INTO ANVIL", Number 2 is about to be unhinged ~ "A CHANGE OF MIND", Number 6 climbs on the operating table for surgery and turns the tables.
The Prisoner is simply the greatest television series ever made, with outstanding cues at every turn. Through this score we are able to relive all the characters that grew so dear in our hearts. The composer Albert Elms synchronizes the score to fit the mood of each cue. Elms music is interwoven into the original theme that was written by Ron Grainer featuring the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, and it works perfectly. Highly recommend this collection as we relive those magical years when television was creative and entertaining. The music should be considered as one of the primary characters of the series.

Great music from tv's first masterpiece.......2005-07-30
You have to watch the Prisoner to fully appriciate the musical manipulation that happens on the psychological level. The marches are sinister and the jazz pieces are exciting and uplifting.
The New Prisoner Sound track.......2002-11-16
Very much improved sound. A huge improvement over previous releases. Put together in episode order (ie all the music from Arrival, then Chimes,AB&C etc, interspersed with atmospheric sound bites from each episode. A must for all Prisoner Fans. There are 3 volumes in total.
For the avid Prisoner series fan.......2002-11-15
Wonderful collection; looks like the first of a three-part CD collection. Includes excerpts of classic dialogue from episodes in the series--"...I will not be pushed, indexed...." The liner notes include minor but interesting trivia on the soundtrack creators such as Ron Grainer--paid 48 English pounds for the license to use the Beatles' "All you need is love" in the final episode. The sound quality in this collection could use further enhancements, but you get full versions of the background music used in various scenes of the series, which is really nifty.
"Silva & Ron Grainer set the standards for THE PRISONER".......2002-11-13
Can you imagine waking up in a strange place, walking over to a window, looking out seeing this beautiful but strange village. It's not a dream, but the suspenseful truth as you contemplate your next move. Your stand in this matter is you will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, or numbered ~ my life is my own. Thus we have "THE PRISONER", the cast for this Patrick McGoohan's classic of seventeen episodes from British television was a series to end all series. It had everything as it debuted in the summer of 1968, making this the most unusual and intriguing series ever brought to the small tube.
As you listen to one of the most recognizable themes composed by Ron Grainer, we hear in the foreground ~ "I am not a number, I am a free man!" ~ Every week this was the tune on this hit show featured on CBS, taking each of us into the realm of Number Six (The Prisoner), as he struggled to find the identity of Number One and escape the grasp of his captors. Where am I? Why was I brought here? Moreover, how do I get away and not be recaptured?
Silva Screen has taken the time and patience to bring three separate segments to this outstanding CD ~ "ARRIVAL", The Prisoner (McGoohan-Number Six) gets his first encounter at The Village, Who runs this place, why am I here and can I escape? The dialogue is important with each cue, setting the tone and mood with Grainer's score ~ "THE CHIMES OF BIG BEN", watch the new resident who may offer a plan to leave The Village, can she be trusted, does she bring hope where there was none before, only one clue will tell, what is it? ~ "A, B, AND C", can Number Six keep his sanity or will he crack, when he is drugged a dreamy party emerges, listen to the Lullaby and see if you can predict the final outcome.
Stand outs come to mind ~ "MAIN TITLE", grabs you immediately ~ "Engadine's Party", mood creative ~ "Number 6 Dances With 'B'", gets under your skin ~ "Number 6 Is Drugged", captures the tone of the scenes ~ "Dreamy Party", takes you on a journey you've been before yourself ~ "End Title", tops off the whole series and album with flare. Ron Grainer's score is supreme, completely takes you into the realm of McGoohan's character ~ THE PRISONER!
The gang at Silva Screen ~ Reynold da Silva (executive producer), David Stone and James Fitzpatrick (re-release co-ordination) and Rick Clark (mastered by) has shown each "film-score-buff" the road beyond The Village, with this ultra-rare release just as we remembered it back in the glory days of the '60s ~ gotta love it!
