With typical verve, director Todd Haynes's film not only seeks to evoke Douglas Sirk's social-themed Hollywood melodramas of the '50s, but to bring an entirely new one to life with a distinct lack of modern irony. In telling the story of a Connecticut couple whose "perfect" relationship masks taboo undercurrents of homosexuality and interracial love, Haynes has found the perfect musical collaborator in 50-plus-year film scoring veteran Elmer Bernstein. The composer manages a deft tightrope act here, managing to inform Haynes's film-out-of-time with the same delicate, emotionally compelling sensibility he brought to his classic score for To Kill a Mockingbird, while steering clear of emotional treacle and obvious musical anachronisms. Anchored by a spare, ethereal piano theme (performed with sympathetic grace by Cynthia Millar) and colored with melancholy woodwind figures and restrained string flourishes, Bernstein's music still manages a back-to-the-future pastoralism that firmly underscores the film's timeless subtexts. These CDs don't meet the standards I would have expected from Elmer Bernstein's wonderful film music.
*Boring*
It just didn't have the energy one would expect from "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Man with the Golden Arm". I think the City of Prague and National Youth Jazz Orchestras were bargain orchestras used to make an inexpensive CD set of one of my favorite film composers. The conducting and arrangements were what made this an obviously bad album.

Played the The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by his one time assistant James Fitzpatrick

it's unfortunate that more tracks weren't able to be recorded as theree was a good 15-20 minutes of space remaining on both discs. Regardless, this is an excellent sampler, especially in conjunction with Varese's Bernstein sampler including rare stuff like the Black Cualdron.


With regards to this silva set, these recordings range back to 1994, with Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit being recorded for a John Wayne CD and Bridge At Remagen for a CD of classic War themes. The Great Escape was also recorded for that CD, but producer James Fitzpatrick opted to record a new arrangement (same with Magnificent Seven). In '97, The Buccaneer for included on a Swashbucklers disc, while Heavy Metal was on the popular 'Space and Beyond' compilation. In '98, the world premiere recording of Airplane first appeared on a DISASTERS film disc. So while it may technically be the world premiere RECORDING it certainly is not the world premiere CD RELEASE of that recording. Ghostbusters was included on Space 3: Beyond the Final Frontier, the second followup to the popular 'Space and Beyond'. Fast forward to 2002 and 4 recordings first appeared on WAY OUT WEST: ESSENTIAL WESTERN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION VOLUME TWO, those being The Comancheros, The Hallelujah Trail, The Scalphunters and The Shootist. Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild are from Silva's JAZZ IN FILM cd.


The remaining tracks were all newly recorded for this release. They are of course the strongest tracks, seeing as the City of Prague Philharmonic has improved over time. I do wonder though why they did not include the older arrangements of Great Escape and Mag. Seven as bonus tracks.

I also recommend the simultaneously released '40 years of Film Music: Jerry Goldsmith' for another great set honoring a late great film composer.

This is a great recording of some of the best film music ever. From the
great westerns to the Theme from Airplane to music he did for television,
Bernstein was one of the greatest.

It's great! It brings back memories of my dad. He loved John Wayne and the old cowboys of the Magnificent Seven. But it's nice just to listen and relax (it's not all cowboy music).

'The HYMN-a word derived from the Greek 'hymnos'-has been defined as 'a term of unknown origin applied from ancient times to a wide variety of songs in honor of gods, heroes or notable men.'
The founder of English hymnody is Isaac Watts (1674-1748), whose work in reforming congregational song texts culminated in the publication of his 'Hymns and Spiritual Songs' in 1707. Watts' collection was as complete and comprehensive a set of hymns as had ever been proposed for English worship and it raised the profile of the hymn sufficiently to overcome the prevailing psalmody. The great flowering period of English hymnody began with the work of the Methodist hymn-writers John Wesley (1703-1791) and his brother Charles (1707-1788). The Wesleys gave great prominence to hymns within their Methodist worship and published many books.
The modern hymn book is a collection of hymns drawn from various times and places. This most accomplished recording by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir presents 16 well-loved hymns from 'The New English Hymnal'. A great number of the hymns, which originate from many different eras and traditions, are given an extra musical dimension by John Scott's original descants and thrilling brass arrangements.
Over the years, I have found myself purchasing mostly the recordings of English choirs. They seem to have incredible vocal skills, perfectly executed phrases, flawless diction and some unidentifiable ingredient that makes them very appealing to hear. Of course, I personally enjoy the all male choirs sound; boy sopranos and male altos make the difference. This is a very appealing group of hymns!!!!!

As I have said already..I am from espiscopal church..these my songs are well know by me...these songs give encouragement when it seems that all hope is lost..these are tunes that are well received....they are also very simple for the every day person to gain strength from day to day..they will become your daily prayer.....

Praise The Lord offers the listener traditional hymns in the English/British tradition. the clarity of the voices make it possible for the listener to follow the words distinctly. The organ soars as accompaniment. the CD provides organ and choral quality for the novice and the experienced musician.

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

With typical verve, director Todd Haynes's film not only seeks to evoke Douglas Sirk's social-themed Hollywood melodramas of the '50s, but to bring an entirely new one to life with a distinct lack of modern irony. In telling the story of a Connecticut couple whose "perfect" relationship masks taboo undercurrents of homosexuality and interracial love, Haynes has found the perfect musical collaborator in 50-plus-year film scoring veteran Elmer Bernstein. The composer manages a deft tightrope act here, managing to inform Haynes's film-out-of-time with the same delicate, emotionally compelling sensibility he brought to his classic score for To Kill a Mockingbird, while steering clear of emotional treacle and obvious musical anachronisms. Anchored by a spare, ethereal piano theme (performed with sympathetic grace by Cynthia Millar) and colored with melancholy woodwind figures and restrained string flourishes, Bernstein's music still manages a back-to-the-future pastoralism that firmly underscores the film's timeless subtexts. I was really sad to hear earlier this year that Elmer Bernstein died. He was amazing and this soundtrack is very good proof. This music is some of the most beautiful I have ever heard and it MADE this movie. It may sound at first a little cheesy, but once it grows on you and you understand the context of the film, you will love it.

I heard the music before I saw the film, because I knew Elmer Bernstein a lot by now, and I very much admired him. For this film, Elmer went back to his early years of film scoring, and wrote a very much 50s-ish score. Full of longing, sadness, a sense of companionship, and other things that I'm unable to write down. Performed with luscious beauty by the Hollywood Studio Symphony, and with wonderful piano solos by Cythina Miller, it is no doubt vintage Elmer Bernstein. I was even more interested to notice that the orchestra was made up of only 53 players, a number that is not always used with movie orchestras today, which would explain why you could hear the sound so clearly, and notice every single instrument in the studio. I was very disappointed during the Oscars to see Elmer lose, because he very much deserved a second Academy Award. Now, he's dead. I was completely upset when I found out, especially when I realized that this was his last film (unless he did another since this film was made two years ago, please point out if I'm wrong). This soundtrack will take you back to the days when Elmer was young and just beginning.

After watching the movie, I had to get the score. I really enjoy the grand and lush feel of this incredible CD. You don't have to like the movie to appreciate the music. I listen to it at the office because it is quite appealing without being distracting. It gives me a good feeling inside. I'd buy it again. I don't know the composer's other works but after this, I'll be on the lookout.

The Oscar-nominated score by Elmer Bernstein, is so compelling, I now want to see the movie, too. The music evokes the long-lost melodramas of the 1950s and earlier, when scores were like a good paradox: Both sweeping and understated at the same time.

Bernstein's work here, with frequent collaborator Cynthia Millar, is evocative of some of his best work and other composers from the 50s without being overly hokey or anachronistic. It holds up fine as a score in 2003, too.

Good stuff for any fan of film or period music.

I started listening to this CD about a week before seeing the film and I felt then that it stood very firmly on it's own. Having seen the film, I now have this playing in an endless loop on my Walkman and it is absolutely gorgeous. It's one of those rare film soundtracks that actually plays as the soundtrack to one's life while you listen to--I lose myself in it constantly. Bernstein and Haynes are working toward the same end, with slightly different means--where Haynes uses style to create distance so that the emotion of the story is controlled, Bernstein rears back from the big emotional moments and takes us on unfamiliar, unexpected detours that locate the uncertainty of the central character. When the big themes do arrive, it's a stunner. What I love are the character motifs throughout, in particular Cathy's theme, that survives and endures and emerges under the final piece, small, fragile but still heroic. In contrast to something like The Hours, this is subtle and, at times, ambiguous. As Haynes said recently, "I like films that make me think." This score doesn't tell you what to feel; it deposits you in a place that is uncertain, transitory and constantly shifting. Just...y'know, a classic.

        What we have here is some great, great power metal. I only wish they were more well known than what they are now. Seriously though if your looking for a great power metal band get this cd.
