Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age is the sequel to Itzhak Perlman's popular album of movie themes performed with soundtrack composer John Williams. Unlike its predecessor, this disc focuses on classic cinema themes and features the Boston Pops Orchestra, not the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The Laura theme, as well as Max Steiner's Now Voyager and Miklós Rózsa's Lost Weekend themes, sound lush and romantic in Perlman's lyrical hands. The traditional Irish jig "The Quiet Man" is the disc's most upbeat moment, while the unforgettable Gone with the Wind theme is its most memorable. These are timeless, dreamy compositions, though not necessarily the most uplifting. If you're looking for something cinematic to get your heart racing, check out Ricardo Chailly's recording of Shostakovich's film scores or even Leopold Stokowski's classic work on Fantasia. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Perlman, Williams reunite in wonderful Serenade sequel.......2003-12-04

With the success of Cinema Serenade, conductor John Williams and violinist Itzhak Perlman reunited to record another collection of classic movie themes. Performed this time by the Boston Pops Orchestra, the music of Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age harkens back to the days of stars such as Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Ray Milland and Clark Gable.

The 12 selections include themes by Hollywood legends Max Steiner, Miklos Rozsa and Erich Wolfgang Korngold (whose son George would later produce several of composer/conductor Williams' scores for Varese Sarabande Records). Cinema Serenade 2 presents beautiful arrangements of Steiner's themes for Now, Voyager and Gone With The Wind, Korngold's love theme from The Adventures of Robin Hood, Charlie Chaplin's lovely Modern Times and "St Patrick's Day," a traditional Irish song from the John Wayne classic The Quiet Man.

Since I consider myself to be a charter member of The Rick Blaine Society of Rank Sentimentalists, I'd have to say my favorite tracks on this album are Herman Hupfeld's timeless "As Time Goes By" from 1942's Casablanca and Victor Young's "My Foolish Heart" (from the 1949 film of the same title). It was while I was listening to the radio (on the late WTMI 93.1 FM classical station) that the DJ played "As Time Goes By" and I discovered this recording of mostly lyrical themes; I listened to Perlman's haunting violin solos and the Boston Pops' bravura performance and nearly wept. I, of course, bought this CD the next day and it's now one of my favorites.

For fans of Itzhak Perlman, John Williams or film music in general, both of the Cinema Serenade CDs are a treasure trove of beautiful and memory-stirring themes.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the most beautiful music you'll ever hear.......2001-06-15

This is one of the most beautiful CDs I've ever heard. The selections are musically much richer than Cinema Serenade I. In particular, Sir William Walton's music from Henry V, Korngold's music from Robin Hood, and Newman's music from Wuthering Heights are standouts. The Korngold is my favorite, with several themes from the picture packed into a short love scene lifted straight from the movie. The arrangements on this album are stunningly lush, especially those by Williams. His opening chords from The Uninvited are terrific harmonically.

4 out of 5 stars Don't compare it to Cinema Serenade 1.......2000-01-24

Itzhak Perlman is still considered by me the best violinist alive today. His techiniques are so impressable and heartouching and nobody can contest that. The idea of this CD was wonderful, although the selections of the musics aren't so good than in Cinema Serenade 1. But anyway, if you want to listen musics that worldwide the people emotioned with, buy this CD, but don't fall in the temptation to compare it to the first one.

5 out of 5 stars I can't stop listening to this CD...........1999-10-03

All of those lush movie themes are greatly compiled on this CD. I especially liked Laura and Stella by Starlight. After listening to this, you will want to go out and buy/rent these great old movies!

Michel Legrand is one the biggest artists of music entertainment, a sensitive composer and arranger.

Here you'll find a correct selection of Legrand's material with unnecessarily new arrangements though with an impeccable performance.

Many of the songs in the repertoire are still available in CDs you can find here @Amazon and the best Legrand is the original Legrand.

This album stands only for those who doesn't care about original takes and wishes just for a selection of the best Legrand.

5 out of 5 stars "one of the greatest film composers of the 20th Century ~ Michel Legrand".......2005-10-26

Silva Screen has released a collection that will set you on your ear "The Essential Michel Legrand Film Music Collection"...Legrand's score sets the tone and mood you experience a sense of power and freedom, so exhilarating...Legrand's genius in composition and orchestration, puts the listener smack dab in the middle of each film he scores as it serves up a generous helping of heaven for all "film-score-buff" collectors

Michel Legrand was born in Paris on February 24th, 1932...attended the Paris Conservatory Progressing...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s with "THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG" (1964)..."THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR" (1968)..."THE GO-BETWEEN" (1970)..."SUMMER OF '42" (1971)..."THE THREE MUSKETEERS" (1973)...and three Oscars from the Academy Awards for "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" for best music and original song in 1969 , "SUMMER OF '42" for best original song and original dramatic score in 1972... "YENTL for best music and original song score in 1984...then in 2003 nominated for Broadway's Tony Awards for Best Original Music Score for the Musical "Amour", there's no letting up for this hard working composer.

The Flemish Radio Orchestra featuring conductor composer Michel Legrand on piano and harpsichord, Philippe Chayeb on bass, Thierry Chauvet on drums and Bruno Caviglia on guitar...all in all did a magnificent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for a multitude of films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which is long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand.

This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Legrand's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is Reynold da Silva [executive producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

This Jennifer Garner-starring film version Marvel Comics' martial arts expert/assassin-as-superhero never quite found its focus as successful big-screen adaptation. But its modern-rock song-score "Album" (Christophe Beck's more traditional orchestral score is also available) has no such obstacle, gathering together new recordings that punctuate the film's milieu with often forceful effectiveness. Jet keeps things lively with "Hey Kids," another rollicking dose of snotty retro-pop from the Aussie newcomers, while "Breathe No More" by Evanescence (previously only available as a live cut) is essentially a solo showcase for the emotive moodiness of singer Amy Lee's dusky voice, yet one that finds ample resonance with the film's title character. A shadowy remix of Finger Eleven's "Thousand Mile Wish," Taking Back Sunday's new "Your Own Disaster" and Strata's "Never There" mine a similarly introspective vein, contrasting well with more lively cuts like The Donnas' "Everything Is Wrong" and NYC's Twenty-Twos giving Veruca Salt's "5 Years" a nervy kick. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Great cd.......2007-02-25

This cd is really good. It has a lot of good rock songs. Even if you don't like ELEKTRA you will like this cd if you like rock music.

4 out of 5 stars eh..........2006-10-08

I'm not really sure what to say about this compilation. For starters, I really did enjoy the addition of new songs by SpiderMan II-famous Jet, Evanescence with their previously live-only track Breathe No More, Strata, and a few more artists. Then we have Megan McCauley, who I think so deserves at least an MTV Music Award for this song. Yet, despite these praises, it really wasn't as good as I thought it was. It might be me just comparing it to the Daredevil soundtrack (as Elektra is the cohort to Daredevil)... or maybe I'm comparing one Evanescence song on this CD to two on Daredevil ("Bring Me to Life" and "My Immortal"). Not sure. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not the worst CD out there... not by far. In fact, I really liked it. I just didn't like it enough to give it a full 5 stars. Maybe if they put stuff like "Before I Forget" or "Duality" by Slipknot or "Numb" or even "Frgt:10" by Linkin Park (the latter from Reanimation), I could have given it a higher rating. Don't let this scare you away from getting this, though. It's an awesome CD; it's also not the best in the world... but then again, what is?

3 out of 5 stars It's decent.......2006-06-11

The songs on the soundtrack are either really good or really bad. The ones I think that are really good (and the reasons why I bought the soundtrack) are Tracks 6, 9, 12, and 15.
The rest of the songs aren't that good.
So basically the movie is better than the album. (Elektra receives 4 stars from me.)
If you like this soundtrack you will like the Daredevil Soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Newman..........2005-03-29

Nothing else on this disc will surpass the the bold hauntingly beautiful Cathy's theme from the "Wuthering Heights"suite.
We are then given lesser known selections from the 1930s, 40s era
of Alfred Newmans extraordinary film score output. "Prince of Foxes" the Italian renaissance historical novel wasn't even shot in technicolor, but we are given a marvelous panoramic Newman score, complimenting the period costumes and sets. The seductive theme from "David and Bathsheba" is a bit reminicent of R Straus's "Dance of the Seven Vails" but not as beefy in orchestration nor development. "Dragonwyck" is another gothic piece of dark romanticism, with music focusing on eleagant melody with a touch of saddness. In "Prisoner of Zelda" the regal music grandly depicts the the fictional Kingdom of Ruritania. This score was used in 1937 and again in the 1952 remake. Lastly the march from "Brigham Young" ends this disc with the bold determination in music of the Mormon's trek from Illinois to Utah in 1840, and the setting of their domain.
The New Zealand forces are to be commended for their committed playing along with the cinema sonics captured by the engineers. The liner notes list every score Alfred Newman has written from 1930 to "Airport" in 1970.

4 out of 5 stars Must for Wuthering Heights Fans.......2004-10-04

Wonderful tribute to Alfred Newman, the Wuthering Heights suite alone is enough to buy this CD! Beautiful and moving music indeed!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful recording of Newman's early music.......2003-08-07

It has been a long time since a film music recording has captured my imagination and become virtually unforgettable, working its way into my thoughts through the days following my first hearing it. Seldom do I agree with others about the merits of albums released with the usual repeats of themes available on a dozen other recordings. Because of this, I have been accused of being a world-class curmudgeon (among other things) when it comes to preferring faithfulness to a composer+s work, rather than embracing the uninspired and pedantic interpretations we all-too-often get.

It is, therefore, with trepidation -- and with joy -- that I highly recommend to you Koch International+s "Wuthering Heights: A Tribute to Alfred Newman," Richard Kaufman conducting the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. The program features Wuthering Heights (12:40), Prince of Foxes (13:19), David and Bathsheba (love theme -- 3:44), Dragonwyck (8:43), The Prisoner of Zenda (7:01), and Brigham Young (5:18).

This album was lovingly produced by the late Tony Thomas, and Edward B. Powell's original orchestrations were preserved throughout. The ambient sound on this disc is wonderful and could serve as a standard for other re-recording projects. Not only are the selections representative of Newman's genius as a film composer, they are performed with impassioned fervor -- and with fidelity to tempo and nuance rarely achieved by other interpreters of Newman's work.

The CD begins with a generous suite arranged by Fred Steiner for "Wuthering Heights," encompassing all the major motifs of Newman's score -- Despair - Twin Motives; Cathy's Theme; Wuthering Heights Motive - The Moors; The Children (Wuthering Heights the early days); The Playcastle; Cathy the Fine Young Lady; Isabella; and Edgar Linton - The Grange. Steiner missed nothing in this arrangement -- it is replete with Newman's trademark sounds, all beautifully performed, including ethereal strings evoking the moors and some hauntingly wonderful instrumental solos. (That haunting, almost eerie string effect made equally impressive appearances in such scores as "Song of Bernadette" and "Twelve O'Clock High"). There are passages within this suite that achieve a purity of sound I've rarely heard. As the Cathy theme is restated in the closing moments, a youth choir is used to near-stunning effect. The suite fully realizes the poignancy and staggering intensity of Newman's score and sound. The New Zealand Symphony is a magnificent body of musicians and it is expertly conducted throughout this disc's program.

The wonderful opening selection is a listening experience that, for Newman lovers, should be nearly cathartic. Because of this, it's probably best to take a breather before continuing on to the magnificent presentation of "Prince of Foxes.". This suite was edited by Tony Thomas and Kaufman leads his orchestra from the explosive opening of percussion of the Prelude through the major motifs of Newman's score for this renaissance film. Borgia's Triumphal March will be more familiar to many as the 'Rescue of Demetrius' from "The Robe" (and it was originally
written for "Hunchback of Notre Dame"), but as is true of all Newman's cross-referenced works, the piece takes on new life with gorgeously different and striking orchestrations. The sequence beginning with Theme Development and continuing through to the end is a stunning orchestral conversation, starting in the flutes, then taken up by cello and violin, interrupted by fanfare, then taken back over by the string section which engages in a wonderful counterpoint exercise. The suite ends majestically with an organ leading into a restatement of the main theme and concluding with full orchestra fortissimo.

The shortest selection in this program is a mesmerizing reading of Newman's love theme from "David and Bathsheba." There are more than 3 minutes of Newman's music here and each second is a gem. It begins with the strings shimmering through the sensual seductive phrases of both the film's main title and Bathsheba's bath scene and segues into a gorgeous reading of the love motif (known in some quarters as 'Rapture of Love') in which the NZO is so beautifully in control that it seems to caress the notes as it weaves a spell. It is contemplative, soulful and searingly heartfelt.

The "Dragonwyck" suite, edited by Tony Thomas, begins with Main Title and Opening, in which the orchestra explodes into a foreboding, gothic maelstrom of sound and then segues into a jaunty, lilting tune. The Dragonwyck theme follows and has a plaintive, yearning quality that evolves into a beautiful light waltz (The Wells Family). The music turns sinister in Miranda, with high strings in a mysterioso passage. Dr. Turner closes the suite (and possibly the film?) with a somber, plaintive restatement of the Dragonwyck theme in the strings and then a full orchestral conclusion.

"The Prisoner of Zenda" is one of the best movies ever made and Newman's score to this film is one of the finest ever written. Arranged by Christopher Palmer -- and titled "A Ruritanian Rhapsody for Orchestra" -- Kaufman and the NZO give this music a robust, rapturous reading, complete with fanfares and ariations -- from tender to majestic -- of the regal main theme which serves double duty as a theme of dynastic tradition and as a love theme. There is also swashbuckling bravado representing the rescue of the Prince, the sword fight and the escape of Rupert of Hentzau. This score, in fact, served notice that Alfred Newman not only greatly admired Erich Wolfang Korngold, but could hold his own writing in the Korngoldian style. "Zenda" is a Newman score that deserves to be recorded in its entirety, but this suite beautifully captures many of its highlights. I wanted much more, but this will do.

The final selection is the rousing "Brigham Young: A Symphonic March,." adapted and arranged by Fred Steiner "from The March, 'The Trek,' and the hymn tune by William W. Phelps 'the Spirit of Gold like a fire is burning.'" (from the booklet notes). There is a wonderful "pioneer" flavor to this robust march, and it is a rhythmic crowd-pleaser.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars An Almost Brilliant Mix Tape.......2007-06-06

The songs here range from smart, if overly familiar, electro-pop to a few Latin rockers; however, the flow comes to a grinding halt whenever the bits of soundtrack score are played. I'm sure they were perfectly evocative and moody for the images they were meant to accompany, but standing alone they are crushingly boring. My recommendation is to buy the CD (or borrow if you can) and just rip the songs by the contributing artists - making the near brilliant mix tape to chill out to.

4 out of 5 stars Subtle and Delicate.......2006-08-06

Intricacy (Master Class) evolves into a mystery as electronica pulsates from your headphones in a sexy melancholy (Honey) and then dissipates into a haunting acoustic mystery (Super-Dooper). Until Angels, this becomes very relaxing. Norah Jones is hardly recognizable. The music then turns very moody and slowly slips away into a subtle soundtrack background ambience. The mood setting elements are very apparent throughout the selections.

4 out of 5 stars Not grand, but good none the less.......2006-12-16

I'll start by saying that this did not follow Bronte's classic extremely well, having cut out the latter part of the book, but it does suffice for what is there. Though with just the CD, and none of the dialogue that would have come between songs, it is a bit difficult to follow the story. The vocal talents, however, I feel were very exceptional. Dave Willetts made a dark and brooding Heathcliff, and Lesley Garrett captured the essence of Cathy quite well. Not all of the songs were grand, but it had some gems none the less, and did tell a descent story for what was there. If you're seeking a musical CD that tells the full story I would not suggest this one, for it seems parts are missing without the dialogue, but if you just enjoy theatre music, or even the classic novel, I would suggest giving this one a chance.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting musical for a literary classic.......2006-06-16

Conventional from a musical viewpoint, but interesting for being the adaptation of a popular literary classic. It has some attractive tunes and the voices are fine. However, as a whole, it never gets too high. For the ones interested in musicals AND literature as well, it becomes a must.

3 out of 5 stars Flawed, but appealing.......2006-05-07

The strength of this album lies with Bernard Taylor's melodies, rather than in the featured vocal talents. The lyrics are sometimes distractingly weak, as well. There is nothing innovative here--but if you enjoy musical melodrama and memorable tunes, this recording is worthwhile. Despite its flaws, I've played it many, many times.

4 out of 5 stars Good treatment of a complex book.......2004-12-20

I am a fan of Wuthering Heights (the book) and wasn't sure that a musical could capture it, for one thing, it is so long (the end, with Catherine Linton and Hareton is not included). I think that Bernard Taylor does a wonderful job of sticking to the emotion of the book. It 'feels' right. That said, I do not really like Dave Willetts as Heathcliff. He sounds too soft and too refined. The music, in my opinion, is quite good. I must admit, the first time I listened to the musical, I wasn't fond of it. I put it away for almost a year before I listened to it again, but once I did, I fell in love with it. Wuthering Heights deals with a lot of complex relationships. I think that Bernard Taylor does a pretty good job conveying that. Hindley, Isabella, and Edgar are all scarce, but I think that focusing on Heathcliff and Cathy is the best way to tell the story in the end. I really enjoy this musical. It is 'heavier' than a lot of them, very much Operatic in parts (being an Opera singer, I like that, but not everyone would). The music is good, and the emotions are well conveyed but the storytelling aspect is somewhat lacking. This is, of course, largely (at least I think, I have not seen it performed) because a considerable amount of dialogue and character interaction is missing. Still, very worth listening to. If you like musicals like Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and Jekyll and Hyde, you will probably like Wuthering Heights.

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely astonishing soundtrack.......2002-05-26

Whilest no-one really saw "Human Nature", it was a good movie (in my opinion, I thought it was better than "Being John Malkovich"). Yet, whilest hardly anyone seeing it being a tragedy in itself, what's even more of a tragedy is how no-one will buy the soundtrack, despite the fact that it could possibly be one of the best albums of the year.

The most amazing thing is how the soundtrack jumps from genre to genre logically and with ease. Whilest there are many short orchestral tracks sprinkled throughout, many selections stand out. One of which is "You", which is a wonderful jazz melody. Then, there's the small "Waltzes" that adhere to the title very well. Also, the piano/violin movement "Allegrato in B Flat Major" is just an astonishing piece of work.

Yet, there are still some moments for craziness. Patrica Arquette sings "Hair Everywhere", which comes in both it's version as presented in the film and a danceable remix as well. One additional bonus is quite possibly one of the funniest songs since the Avalanches "Frontier Psychiatrist": "My Name Is Puff", which is a wonderous mish-mash of lines from the movie placed over a funky beat (and don't forget the teen-pop-ish vocals on the chorus ["It's an animal urge, Puff / Nothing to be ashamed of"]). The remix is jiggy as well.

So, whether you have or haven't seen the movie, it's no matter. Just know that the soundtrack is something not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Don't underestimate: this may be the best LP all year!.......2002-05-26

This soundtrack is absolutely breathtaking. All soundtracks are made to enhance the film itself; it's a known fact. Yet, there are so many things going on in "Human Nature" (which is an excellent movie by itself), it's hard to believe that one could ignore as much music was placed on this disc.

There are too many pieces to cover. The album masterfully goes over several genres without any sign of exhaustion. From the Patrica Arquette solo "Hair Everywhere" (and it's dance-oriented remix) to the the tender "Here With You", the album is absolutely sprawling. It covers jazz ("You"), politicts ("The Heights of Culture"), and even creepy French interludes ("Fais Do Do"). Other highlights include the nice "Waltzes No.'s 3, 4, 6, 12", the hilarious "My Name Is Puff" (and it's remix), and the breathtaking "Allegretto In B Flat Major".

From funk-pop to classical to jazz to comedy, this is one of the most pleasent surprises I've heard all year. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Music at its best!.......2000-02-01

I saw the Liberty Heights movie 3 times, and that inspired me to buy the Two soundtracks! "Baby Eyes" sang by Brenda Russell is simply breathtaking, it's jazzy and classy. I love the smooth sounds of that song. "Putting on the dog" is amazing, it really fit with the scene in the movie when it was playing. "Putting on the dog" is quite sexy and brilliant and risky! "Rock island line" is the funniest song that I've ever heard! "Rock island line" is a mix of country and Alaskan sounds, I loved it! "Shake. Rattle & Roll" done by Big Joe Turner is really good, has a lot more beat than Billy Haley and his Comets' version. "Shake. Rattle & Roll" had me tapping my feet and snapping my fingers all day after hearing it! "Blue moon" done by Elvis Presley is lovely, has a pretty jingle beat to it. "Please. Please. Please." done by James Brown, is TOO cool! You can't help but to chant "PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE!" Along with James, the song is very soulful! I am only 20, but I know good old time music when I here it, but this soundtrack and watch the movie! Adrien Brody "Ten Benny" and Ben Foster "Flash Forward" put on an excellent and convincing show!

4 out of 5 stars Something For Everyone.......2000-01-24

Tom Waits, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presly and James Brown on one single compilation? That's right. And that should say it all.

This album is the true test of people who like to answer "everything" to those who ask "what kind of music do you listen to?" Besides Elvis's stunning performance of the oldies radio staple, "Blue Moon," Carl Perkins and Big Joe Turner add to the 50's flavor with "Honey Don't" and "Shake, Rattle & Roll."

But there is a second and even a third genre of music fighting for attention on this album. Louis armstrong's "If" is one of the most outstanding jazz performances of his early period. If you want more contemporary-sounding jazz, try Brenda Russel's "Baby Eyes" or "When Love Walked In." Perhaps one step above any of those selections is the legendary Nat King Cole's "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup."

Then, of course, there is Tom Waits, who has apparently devoted his career to busting the screws out of any category in which critics try to place him. Simply put, there is every kind of music, and there is Tom Waits. His "Putting on the Dog" sounds like a step in a new direction for him, while using the musical sounds of his acclaimed 80's and 90's output. It is another fantastic Tom Waits song, featuring the bleak soundscape expected of his music, but there is a fuller sound on this one. A Piano shrills through the rhythmic mess of congas, bongos, sax, electric guitar, bass, shaker and, yes, even a train whistle, played by none other than the man himself. "It's Over" is a blander track, quite similar to "Strange weather" from 1988's "Big Time," which is also heavy with accordian and accoustic guitar.

Surprisingly, the James Brown pieces feature a very young James Brown, one who I had never heard before. His "Please, Please, Please" and "Chonnie-On-Chon" are both thumping 50's Rock 'N Roll blasts remeniscent of Little Richard or Ricky Nelson. Both songs are fantastic and destined to get even the stiffest among us moving aorund. After discovering these selections from Brown's early days, I am going to look for some more.

It is doubtful that many people will love EVERY song on here, but that does not mean that there are any bad tracks. Every song is listenable. However, the styles are so varied that the inconsistency may have some skipping listeners around a little. Generally, the "Liberty Heights" soundtrack is a gem, and it definitely offers something for everyone. That is why it is likely to leave most people smiling. For those who were there, the 50's rock and older jazz classics will induce a nostalgic grin, for others, the new Tom Waits songs will win him some new fans and leave veterans thirsting for his follow up to the grammy nominated "Mule variations," released in 1999. I would say this album is as close to a must buy as could be.

5 out of 5 stars Liberty Heights.......2000-01-09

Okay, I'm cheating a little. I've only seen the movie, I haven't, strictly speaking, heard the soundtrack in isolation yet. The Tom Waits songs seem jarringly anacronistic in the movie but are so great that out of the context of the rich visuals of the mid-50's period, will make for great listening. The music and the movie capture the yearnings of a young man in '55, as well as the spirit of his times with gentle nostalgia.

2 out of 5 stars Nah.......2005-10-11

If this score had the suspense music shown in the final battle bewteen Griffith and Keaton in the movie, I would have kept it since that is why I wanted it in the first place. Empty score without it, nothing great here, some moments but not enough for me.

3 out of 5 stars Nice score, CD way to short!.......2002-11-02

I was in Wal-Mart and I saw Pacific Heights DVD for 5 bucks so I bought it, enjoyed the movie, enjoyed the score(love Zimmers work, The Rock, Broken Arrow,). Soon after seeing the movie I bought the soundtrack, First Track: begins with a Broken Arrow type theme then goes in to Micheal Keaton's sax theme, good track. Second Track: the piano is played for about 2 minutes and then this is where it gets good, the Broken Arrow type theme is played again in all its glory, and Keatons theme plays with a few beats and vocals. The other tracks aren't as good lack themes, lack every thing that made the other track great. Now heres the draw back, the CD is 36 minutes long!. If your a Hans Zimmer get it anyway. Nice score, CD way to short.

5 out of 5 stars This is CLASSIC Hans Zimmer!!!.......2002-07-26

This is one of Hans Zimmer's most classic soundtracks. It usually isn't mentioned in some of the biographies of Zimmer on other web sites and I DON'T KNOW WHY. This soundtrack features uniqe: percussion, sound effects, orchestration, jazzy music, classical music, blues music, ethnic music(Bluegrass, Japanese)
and of course... Suspense music. Here is a little overview of it.
1. Part I- This starts the movieout with the percussion and leads into the dessert theme(banjo theme)which is extremely clever theme, then the rythym comes into play a little clearer. Then starts Carter Hayes' spooky, seductive, gloomy theme played by a saxaphone, then repeated with some spooky orchestrations and a disturbing voice by Carmen Twille. It continues with the beggining scenes with Hayes and Ann. Then it completely skips(and I don't know why they do this)to the hotel scene where Patty is finding out who Hayes really is.
2.Part II- Is the End Credits where Hans reprises the main piano theme for Patty and Drake and makes it sound very fresh, then he reprises the dessert(banjo) theme again with a climatic build up that turns it from a simple banjo and whistle theme to a orchestrated blast, followed by reprising Carter Hayes' spooky (sax/voice) theme again also lifting this one to a huge new arrangement, and dying back down with an ending voice.
Part III- This is the start of the suspence. It starts the main theme, and the leads into the very ethhnic Japanese theme with a beautiful arrangement. Then it starts the scene where the demented Hayes stares delinquently stareing at Patty from within the base-ment. Then it goes into the scene where Drake spies on Hayes and gets a loadfull of cochroaches in his face!
Part IV- This combines 3 big suspense sequences that sound really nasty, creepy and... just plain weird. In both 3&4, Hans uses very unique sound effects that sound creepy and add very atmospheric feel to it. He used the screeching, slasher technique that sounds like a screeching violin that he uses on other action thriller soundtracks. Hardcore Zimmer fans would know what I'm talking about. He used it 6 times in Part III and twice at the elevator scene in Part I. It originated on this soundtrack. Part IV concludes with the big percussive, piano part and leads into the final reprise of the main(piano)theme.
Zimmer, himself said on a interview that this was still one of his favorite soundtracks, because you can never tell what instrument are used. I don't think that that's the best reason to like it, but he sure as heck is right, for at least the sound effects. This Soundtrack is out of print, though I'm not surprised. It's been out for 12 years, but if you can happen to stumble across one, GET IT! This is a prominent addition to any Zimmer or score fan's collection.

learned the hard way! if I had scrolled down far enough, I would have read that this is not the songs in the movie which were great! this is the score and holds no magic for me whatsoever, I wanted the great blues and jazz in the movie. glad I did not pay an arm and a leg for this. another item for a yard sale.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2001-01-31

Perhaps I was naive in thinking this CD would include the songs played IN Liberty Heights, not those written especially FOR the movie. Not that the music itself is bad, it just wasn't what I was expecting or looking for.

5 out of 5 stars A very soulful CD!.......2000-02-01

This CD is amazing, BUY IT! This soundtrack original score left me swaying in the dark. The opening song has such moving melodies! This music went perfectly with the moving film! I love all of the songs, if you've seen the film, you'll really feel the deep emotions buried into each song on the CD. If you have not seen the film, you'll want to, after hearing this grand score that belongs to a movie that should have had much more publicity!
