3 out of 5 stars And that's the Gospel of Truth!.......2006-04-16

This was the start of something a bit new. Daivd Zippel & Alan Menken. Once more, Disney goes for bringing adult stories to Disney light. Not many people like this movie because it's untruthful to actual myth. I mean, it'd been nice to see a movie of Hercules doing the ten labors, saving women, but... that's not really what kids want in a disney movie.

But what they DID do is give some greek feel to the music and score. After all, the Muses were the goddesses of art and song, so it makes it fit for them to be telling the story.

Long Ago...--Charleton Heston (famous from Planet of the Apes) does a nice little prologue to the story.

The Gospel of Truth I/Main Titles--David Zippel has catchy lyrics but a more different way of arranging them than Schwartz does. It's complexed, but it rules.

Gospel of Truth--People would think Hades is a bad guy, 'cause he's the greek form of the devil. But if you understand what is right or wrong about this song, it's not that bad.

Go The Distance--I was told by one of my friends that this song was used a lot in the olympics. I never knew that, but pushing that aside, I like it. Also Roger Bart has an amazing singing voice, soon to be a star of The Producers around this time, and possibly starring in You're a Good Man Charlie Brown as Snoopy, I love his singing voice.

Go The Distance (Reprise)--This is nothing new, but it's great to hear Roger's voice again.

One Last Hope--I love Danny DeVito's voice as Phil. This role was tailored for him. He talk sings this song more of than belting it out. Which works, because it's more of a training song. All in all, I think it's witty.

Zero to Hero--The most famous song from Hercules, it's full of rhyme after rhyme lyrics. They give a nice homage to broadway and gospel music, it's awesome. It's so catchy.

I Wont Say (I'm In Love)-- Susan Egan (previously Belle on Broadway for Beauty and the Beast) is an amazing Meg. She's smart, sassy, and she owns this song. This is such a doo-whop song that it's a toe-tapper.

A Star is Born--A nice summary to a nice vareity of music. Gospel, catchy...

Go the Distance (Single)--Michael Bolton was drilled in my head as a child, 'cause my mother liked him. But I find him a pretty good of a singer for this song. I like the added words, and I think it sounds amazing. Though it sounds more like a song for "going the distance for a woman", not "going the distance for your dreams". And so people can kind of get touchy about that.

Now, sad to say, I like Alan Menken, but the music just doesn't do it for me in this soundtrack. It was his last time doing Disney musicals. To others he may have given it his best, but I really don't seem to appreciate it. I also don't like the fact that this was the start of smaller amounts of song in the movies. But out of the composition pieces, I like "Cutting the Thread" & "A True Hero/A Star is Born". Those are beautiful tracks. Perhaps this was because of the pixar take over?

All in all, people like the movie and the soundtrack. I seem to appreciate the movie, but this is not a soundtrack that makes its way into my record player much. Though if you are a disney collector, buy it. I am sure it'll be discontinued sometime soon.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music From An Underrated Film.......2006-01-19

"Hercules" is one of my favorite Disney films. It was just a fun tale that was loose and free for the viewing. There was a little morality in it, what with Herc learning that it isn't the size of a hero's muscles or his popularity that makes him a hero, but what's in his heart. However, the best thing about this flick is that it's just great to watch. The music isn't half bad either. In fact, I loved this film and its music so much that I purchased both when they first became available.

This disc is full of wonderful, gospel-tinged Disney music that bleeds Alan Menken. He did a great job with this album. Also, Michael Bolton finally made me notice him with "Go The Distance."

Pick this up to hear the music from a film that never really did get the respect it deserved. It's wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Love that Herc.......2005-06-15

I myself am a Greek mythology lover-so when I had my kids- I had to get them this movie(well also for myself too) It is very well done-characters are so funny and cute-Danny DeVito is fabulous as Philoctetes (Phil) and Tate Donovan is a perfect fit as the naive, sweet, innocent yet strong Hercules. Rip Torn (with his strong voice) plays Zeus superbly. James Woods (who mostly plays bad guys and does it well)plays the evil Hades-Lord of the Underworld.
I recommend it highly for your movie library.

4 out of 5 stars Fun for the whole family!.......2005-06-02

Great singers, great songs! A light-hearted soundtrack with real talent. The Muses carry the cd with their amazing voices and excited delivery, church choir style with alot of heart. Danny DeVito sings the likable One Last Hope and Susan Egan provides the raspy vocals for the catchy I Won't Say(I'm In Love). Good clean fun but warning!!!! the songs get stuck in your head!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2005-01-23

as usual disneys soundtracks are a work of art. alan menken is a genius and while you're listening you're just replaying the movie in your mind. it is a treat.

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

5 out of 5 stars Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11

I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

5 out of 5 stars Distinctive, fun, and suitably heroic!.......2006-10-02

This sampling of fully-orchestrated soundtrack selections by Joseph LoDuca from the "Hercules" TV series of the 1990s sound more traditional, perhaps, than his work for "Xena" and "Brotherhood of the Wolf." But it is equally engaging, with great variety of mood and texture. Trademark brass carries the heroic theme, while bassoon is liberally used to express mystery, menace and comic relief. I love it when a soundtrack composer really gets into the material, tying together diverse scenes and techniques by finding ways to parse, reinvent and work that recognizable theme into all sorts of unexpected places. LoDuca does a great job of that--this album really holds together. Listening to it is like reading a story or watching one unfold on the screen. I also love it when composers using a standard full orchestra aren't afraid to incorporate funky world percussion, and LoDuca excels at this as well, to great effect. "A world without music is no world at all," series creators Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are quoted as saying in the CD insert. "Joe's music, like the great god Prometheus, breathed life into our men and women of dust and celluloid." It does that, and more. It stands on its own, as a distinctive work of art in its own right! Try also LoDuca's music for the "Xena: Warrior Princess" TV series, a spinoff of "Hercules," and also for the movies "Brotherhood of the Wolf" and "Army of Darkness." For more cool soundtracks, check out the work of another imaginative composer, James Newton Howard, for such films as "The Village," "Hidalgo," and "Waterworld."

5 out of 5 stars Hercules Rox.......2005-09-14

I really think this is the best Hercules Soundtrack as well as The best Hercules Season!I hope all the Hercules and Xena fans out there will agree with me.

3 out of 5 stars A Curious Choice Of Styles In Here.......2001-08-26

For me it's very difficult to review something like this soundtrack since Joseph LoDuca uses so many different styles from different composers in the field of film music. The real treat here is the Hercules main title, which is one of the best ever written for T.V. However, there are so many influences from composes like James Horner ("Krull"), Peter Gabriel ("Passion-The Last Temptation Of Christ"), and specially, Basil Poledouris ("Conan The Barbarian", "Robocop", "The Hunt For Red October"), which makes me very difficult to find out LoDuca's own style.

4 out of 5 stars Hereclues.......1999-10-29

I have herd this music there and abouts, but am not as mych a fon of Herecules as I am of Xena. I think the Xena cd is better theough . To get there all you half to do is just click back three times, then go to popler music and type in Xena Warrior princess and go to oringel televishion sound trak and you'll be there ~

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......1999-06-21

I am niether a fan of HERCULES or XENA but have listened to many Volumes of their soundtracks because a friend asked me for an honest opinon about them ... How can Mr. LoDuca do so well with the HERCULES soundtracks, which are just lovely, and do so badly with the XENA soundtracks, which are irritating? I suppose it does not matter. If you are fans of these two shows you will buy the music no matter what but - as an impartial listener - I would choose this HERCULES soundtrack straight away, over the XENA music.

3 out of 5 stars Okay CD.......2001-04-02

I didn't like most of this CD as too many of the musical scores seemed overly laden with Hercules' main theme. Because of this few of the pieces had the originality & the strength to really capture my interest. The only ones I really liked were Cute Harpies and Festival of Ghouls. These two songs were the reason I gave it 3 stars.

5 out of 5 stars The God of War recommends it!.......1999-04-17

The Legendary Journeys continue if you listen to this CD. Done by Joseph Deluca this album contains instrumental music from the show. Including the music when Iyolaus's cousin is kidnapped and Brainwashed which is track #26. So buy it and enjoy it, from yours truly the God of WAR!

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT! BUY IT!.......1999-07-11

Hercules and Iolaus are both just SOOOO hot! The music from this CD is as hot as they are! Wonderful sounds and fun stuff too! Loved "Air Herc". Give us MORE from H.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect but ...........1999-07-11

Now that Hercules: The Legendary Journeys is gearing down to it's final few episodes in the sixth season i fear we will not be getting a Vol. 4 of LoDuca's inspiring HERCULES music! And there is sooo much more to hear. Where is Widow Twanky's song from "And Fancy Free ..." Where is the muscial number from "Just Passing Through" just after Herc's guitar solo?? Yet, in saying this, I LOVE this Vol. 3 -- It's the best I've heard so far from either HERCULES or XENA.

4 out of 5 stars Overall a good CD however certain things where lacking.......1999-07-06

I enjoyed this CD. From the isle of Eire to the climatic finale with Dayhak this music catches the soul and makes you feel weak at the knees. Joesph LaDuca has truly done it again. My only complaint was that there is still more music that has yet to be released. Even though we got to hear the Widow Twanky's solo we still have not heard the dance piece that made it famous in the last season. Also other things that were missed, like the death of Alchmene, and the funeral of Sarina right after Lucy Lawless's solo. these are just some to name a few. The lack of pieces reminds me of what John Williams does on his Star Wars soundtracks. Just leaves those little things out. Other than that a excellent CD

5 out of 5 stars A Hercules fan from the good U.S.A.......1999-06-23

Lo Duca does it again with this multi-pleaseing harmounous disc. With a rock tune "Air Herc." from the episode "Just passing through." An explosive soundtrack for an explosive 5th season with the death and return of Iolaus and personal struggle witht the demon Dahak. Plus all new geographical locations from Eire to the frosty norse lands, each with a set of tracks of its own. Including the unbelivably mellow flute songs of the Eire episodes. Which will blow you away with amazement. And will make you smile and laugh at the more journeys section of the CD with the infamous Widow Twanky's solo. A great soundtrack truly some of the greatest music.

5 out of 5 stars Joseph LoDuca Does It Again!.......1999-06-10

Received this CD only a few days ago and haven't been able to put it away. I'm listening even as I write this review! Mr. LoDuca is a master and while his XENA CDs are unique and interesting he's really out done himself this year on H:TLJ. In a season (5th) fraught with problems (including the death of a major and much beloved character who is later brought back to life) the music has been superb. Be it the errie "Sumeria: Faith/Descent" tracks or the mysterious and lilting (and rather Irish) "Eire" tracks or even the misc. fun stuff like Hercules "Air Herc" guitar solo (f/ "Just Passing Through")and The Widow Twanky (doesn't she look a little like Iolaus?)singing "One Dinar a Dance", there is something for everyone! The CD art is rather interesting too. The cover with Hercules (in Eire-Norse clothes)to the front, Iolaus a bit to the back with a blade is interesting, especially when you note the red hues surrounding the characters and a pair of rather evil eyes (Dahak?)peering at us over the two men's heads. Inside are some good black and white photos as well as a stunner on back with Hercules and a white horse. A GREAT CD package ... Now, if only they would spell Iolaus' name correctly. It's NOT Iolus.

2 out of 5 stars dissapointed!.......2001-11-30

I bought this cd just because i had bought the 3 previous! And i must admitt, though i don't want it,that i was dissapointed.Vol.4 hasn't got that...heroic music of Vol.1&2,or the mystic and dark music of Vol.3.I recognised Mr.LoDuca's style, but i was dissapointed.I think that a cd like X:WP Vol.6 must be created for Hercules too.A cd that will contain cues that weren't included in the other cd's.
I will keep the cd as a treasure, just like i always do with Xena and Hercules cd's,but i won't listen to it that often.Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars "LoDuca scores for Hercules IV - Outstanding!".......2000-11-03

Varese Sarabande presents the latest from "Hercules-The Legendary Journeys Volume Four", again composer Joseph LoDuca gives this score his magic touch, with some of the best from the series last eight episodes. LoDuca scored - "The Evil Dead" (1983), "Thou Shalt Not Kill" (1985), "Evil Dead II" (1987), "Army Of Darkness:Evil Of Dead III", "Hercules and the Amazon Women" (1994) and "Xena:Warrior Princess" (1995), each score bears the signature of this gifted composer.

This long running "cult-series" features..."FULL CIRCLE", "REBEL WITH A CAUSE", "HERCULES, TRAMPS & THIEVES", "A WICKED GOOD TIME", blends several genres of rock, new age and classical symphonic arranging counterpart passages, with staggering epic proportions, completely engulfs the listener.

LoDuca just keeps cranking out melodic themes, the scores are fresh and entertaining...how could you ever imagine this popular series without our "movie-music" composer - Joseph LoDuca!

Total Time: 58:48 on 28 Tracks...Varese Sarabande 066183...(2000)

5 out of 5 stars Hercules and the lost music.......2000-10-01

Well I must say this CD was outstanding. Mr. LoDuca has done it again. With tracks from all eight of the final eight episodes of Hercules The Legendary Journeys. From the tracks Bedeviled to Full Circle this CD packs it all in for one final blow out of the great Legendary hero Hercules. However with the shows ending I fear that there will be no more Hercules music. There is still so much more that has yet to be released. Now I fear with the shows ending we may never hear those lost tracks from the earlier seasons that never made it to CD.

Amazon.com

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20

this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.

Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.

Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.

5 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2005-02-24

Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.

3 out of 5 stars Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10

I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.

4 out of 5 stars The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28

Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.

3 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08

This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.
